Filmed on the GoPro HERO3+
On November 2, 2013, my friends, Billy, Josh and Dave, ventured on what is said to be one of the most difficult hikes in North America. With close to 10,500 feet of elevation gain over the course of 15.5 miles from Palm Springs to the top of Mt. San Jacinto, this hike is not for the faint of heart or weak of legs. It's brutal. Not to mention the danger of heat exhaustion and dehydration along the way.
You have to dress for hot temps (upwards of 110+ in the summer) for the lower elevations when the sun rises, but be prepared for sub-freezing temps at the summit. It really is a tough hike that no rookie should attempt.
We travelled from Palm Springs to the summit of Mt. San Jacinto, then back down to the tram. Round trip was just shy of 20 miles according to Strava, but over 20 according to watches and Garmin Connect. Next on the list is to do the Cactus to Clouds to Cactus!
Our total moving time was under 7 hours, but we took a few breaks for video, pics and food. Good luck and be safe!

Train Hard. Race Harder. Party Hardest.

Ethan, your videos are *soooo good* !
At times I think "oh, 10 minutes... that's long for a UA-cam video", but then I just sit back and realy enjoy the awesome view, the fun and tips - and the 10 minutes pass super quickly... too quickly. I really dig your editing and music. My favorite running-related UA-cam channel !
Thank you very much, man. Appreciate the kind words and constant support!!
Dang son. Your comments section done blowed up something fierce, in a good way obviously. No one's a bigger fan of storytelling via the video medium more than me and you do some excellent work my friend. Glad to have shared this adventure with you and our other badass friends. 2014 is gonna be more epic-er!
Thanks doood. And thanks for the rad footage!! Can't wait to see what we come up with from TNF50!!
Your best video yet. It's easy to see in your video recaps (and in the amazing frequency in which you release them) that you avoid stagnation at all costs. No more important an example can be set than that of a man striving to make every day remarkable. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely dude. In the last handfull of years I've found myself in the constant need for movement and being outdoors. It's always been a part of me, but damn if I don't want to try and capture these adventures and share them with the world!
Your production values are ramping up so fast, soon we'll be seeing your work in theaters like Seb Montaz
I love this trail, hadn't hiked it since summer 2010 but if I ever move back to California this will be first on the list!
Great video Ethan, I ran Cactus to Clouds C2C a couple weeks ago, it was a good one with diverse terrain, vegetation and temps from high 70''s at the trailhead to low 30's at the San Jacinto Peak.
Awesome view dude. Kinda envious of the folks working at the ranger station since they get to enjoy that beauty all the time.
God damn it do I appreciate your videos. I have just recently really gotten into running, and its great to know there are some awesome people in the community! Thank you very much for the entertainment, reviews, and the great advice!
I love watching all your adventures! By far one of the best channels I've stumbled across!
Thank you! Spread the word!
Prepare yourself because I am about to throw down a little BROmance here. Ethan I have been watching your videos for a while now (since the first Newton shoe review) and you have helped me get back into running. First you helped by finding a shoe that worked for me I spent over $1000 dollars on shoes trying to find some that didn't hurt my feet and you Newton vid made me buy a pair, now I only run in Newtons! Second you are a big inspiration, Because of you I am trying to get into ultras. I am running my 4th trail half marathon tomorrow and I am also training for my first 50K. I just want to say thanks and keep up the great videos man!!! P.S. I think you do have a soul :P
I agree with Robert Jones on the subject of music, truly an enhancement. Really great work!
...and of course great job on the climb!
Your cast of "characters" crack me up too.
Awesome...totally awesome climb, video capture & the God-given beauty of it all! Thank you so much for sharing, GR!!!
Thanks Mike!!
I loved this hike. The lack of water was intitialy a concern but I got plenty of super cold rain on the way back (they shut the trolley down the day I started). I ran into some very bad weather on the summit & return, like flash flood material, so I didn't see anything from the peak, but the journey up was totally stunning. I was the only one on the mountain during my trek due to the rain risk (slept at round valley). I will definitely re visit San jacinto next year under better conditions. The trek was tough both ways but the rain made it nearly miserable until I got back to the dry zone. Highly recommend as test course for amateur backpackers/hikers like myself.
your story reminded me of when i climbed the East Face of Mt Whitney in a snow storm along time ago in 1984 :) gotta love a good epic climb. camped in the snow at Iceberg Lake... hiked out the next day....
Awesome. How bad was the traverse section near the tram?
Great video! I've thought about trying that...we just did the regular San J. hike yesterday and it kicked us around. Gonna have to work up to this. Thanks for posting!
Just saw this for the first time. Totally makes me want to do this hike!
Fun to watch and find out about new mountains to tackle. Awesome.
Where do you live that you are nearby all of these beautiful trials!
I did San Jacinto from the Marion mt trail and that was just a incredible trail but fing strenuous as well, going down back to the campground was the worst, toe stubbing heaven. Elevation gain was about 4500 in 6 miles but felt like 8. , i can only imagine how cactus to clouds would be.
It's hell! But you sleep good after wards
This is such a good video, it is very inspiring!
Great video. You guys made the hike look easy.
Dude this was so motivational!! Your the best!
Great episode this week , pls do more documentary work!
AWESOME video bro.. Made me make plans to check this one off the list in October.. Did you guys take the tram back down or does it not go to the museum?
Very motivational! I plan on doing an out and back to the peak via Marion Mountain Trail ~12 miles with ~4,800 ft. elevation gain. I can only imagine 10,000 ft. elevation gain and you guys killed it! Good work gents. P.S. what is the name of the song in the first half of the video?
After watching more of your videos I now realize you make your own music. Awesome tunes man! Throw them up on SoundCloud or even iTunes. You could probably make some money from an album. I know I would buy it.
Freaking Awesome...you are living the dream...the worth while one.
One of my goals for 2015, brother!
I'm sooooo glad you made this vid! c2c is on my bucket list, but now i feel more confident, having seen the route, which sounded hard to follow based on article people have written. this is the first time to see it. thanks. I've been to the mt san jacinto peak before but from the Idyllwild side where i live - the "relatively" easy way to get up there -- more like 16 mi. round trip and you start at around 6k ft, so not nearly as strenuous as what you guys did.
C2C is definitely doable for a good hiker. We did it pretty quickly (the guys I was with are monsters!), so take that into consideration depending on your fitness. While I was concerned with following the dots, it really was about just moving forward and upwards until you found the trail again. Sounds iffy, but it was that easy. Once you get to mile 4-ish, the trail is solid all the way up - steeeeeep - but easy to navigate. Keep me posted when you do it!
I've scheduled it for mother's day, doing it with a few fellow trail runners. :)
hell yeah!
Inspirational, Epic !! . I am looking for some comfortable sunglasses to wear on my long runs, Yours looks good. can I know how they are , what they are called , thanks
These are oakleys. They make great sunglasses
Great video. BTW: you guys are REALLY fast on this trail!
Awesome shots. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Damn it ***** I wish I had your musical scoring abilities, they make this video so much more epic. I've done some trail hiking videos in the past but never quite had the impact that this does (and all of your ***** videos for that matter). I'm also jealous of the fact that this is what you get to do now for a living.
Thanks bro!! I wouldn't say I'm making a 'living' doing this, but that's ok cause I'm having a fucking BLAST. Taking advantage of as much life as possible!
***** Maybe not a living, but it's probably enough that you get to spend TIME on it and not lose your shirt.
Anyway, yeah, having a blast is more important than anything else anyway so keep doing it and I'll keep watching and waiting for you at the bottom of the mountain with a beer!
Wonderful documentation of this great area...will share with friends..THANKS to Robert Jones for review....
So inspiring! Your videos make me want to live in California, the weather makes it even better. Guess I should emigrate to Cali :D
Haha, yeah, can't complain!
I love this video and I love how you are using music to create a nice atmosphere to make this an even more enjoyable (well for me at least).
This brings me to introduce you to the music I listen to to "shut my brain off" while running - I think you might find this band's (icelandic) inspirational music a great atmosphere creator - Sigurrós
viðrar vel til loftárása
if this song was forever I could run forever..
Sigur Ros - Svefn-g-englar - HD
Ægir Sævarsson very familiar with Sigur Ros. Love them!
That tough thing! I was doing the Hermon hike which is 5900 elev. gain and 12 miles. I would compare my feelings on top as just after marathon race I done a year after.
Kudos guys! I'd like to try that climb :)
I swear I could smell the pine...
Epic.
haha, awesome! Wonder if UA-cam will add that feature soon...
Very inspiring.. great job bro..
Thanks ginger you my friend have earned a subscriber thanks for the video and the reply... one more question is the trail is easy to navigate
Meh, we were worried about the same thing after reading a bunch of things online. The first few miles are marked w/ white dots painted on rocks. You will lose them at some point, but just keep going UP and you will find a trail. Seriously, it's worrisome, but when you're hiking it, it's not bad at all, just have your bearings.
***** I did the hike, run 2 weeks ago-there are so many trails going every which way. I found it hard to know which way when I got back on the main trail. I found going right worked till the last pass, it goes to the left. I didn't really mean to get off the trail but sometimes it happens.
You deserve so many more views!
Thank you. Hopefully they'll come!
Mr Ginger, do you have a video etc on your setup for filming on the go please
I am a good endurance runner, can I run this route? I'm not fast, but I can carry heavy weights and run for miles.
An awesome video! Inspiring!
I about lost it with the Go Lakers. lolololol
It was called Palms to Pines when I was there....
It'd be cool if you could review the Brooks Pure Cadence 2. :p
Badass, that's all there is to it.
Thanks Tom!
Hey man what was the total time from bottom palm springs to the peak and how many miles? please reply thanks ginger runner
Mileage was around 20 miles and our total time was 6.5 hrs moving, around 8 hours including lunch/food breaks at tram and summit. Takes average hikers 12 hours.
THE BEGINNING LOOKS LIKE AN EPISODE OF LOST LOL
How is your Go Pro set up? Do you carry it the whole time?
Yeah. I didn't put it down or anything, haha. It works as long as I carry a pack
I really wish there were mountains where I live...
Plan an adventure-cation!!!
You're a beast man!
Thanks dude!
Beautiful...
Thanks ORM!
Thank you for sharing GR!
Ultra runner here. Unless you're experienced and have traveled at least 20 miles by foot before, don't try this. If you do, don't expect to be at work on Monday.
what kind watch was that at 2:32? thanks!
Garmin Fenix
***** woah, sick watch but it's pricey. What watch would you recommend in the $200 price range?
Alex Chau got a TON of life out of my garmin forerunner 110 before the strap broke. if you're into tracking your runs, I recommend a GPS tracking watch. Garmin, Polar, Timex, Suunto all make great ones.
Music plus floating title totally reminds me of Heros (the TV show) just sayin'
Congrats on going a third of the way to cruising altitude of planes.
hahaha! Thanks!
Listen Ethan, c'mon man, get a couple of Ultimate Direction water bottles dude! Those two bottles look like you have breast implants!...lmao! Just teasing man, great video!!! as usual.
good stuff. I have mountain biked up and down this trail, its a wild ride. i made it to 500 vertical feet from the top of the tram, too steep after that.
doing this in 3 days with no prior hiking experience/specific training. Should be good. :]
Best advice I could give a rookie is to not die. Seriously.
I've been there
sweeeeeeeeetneeeeeessssssssssss
Thanks for sharing but not very interesting. Other sources much better. Happy trails.
why did u comment this
