The one you tried is a sandalwood scent. The almond scent is for the smaller shaving soap cup, that is fantastic. The splash doesn't have a almond scent but it's fantastic for winter. You must try the balm... is super. Just to know, the price range is really different in Italy between proraso and cella. Cella soap costs 3 times a proraso soap.
Cella Almond is one of my favourites. The scent is strong and fantastic: it’s like plunging one’s face into a bowl of marzipan! 😂 I’m also a fan of the Cella pre-shave. It doesn’t have a scent as such, but it is very slick and (IMHO) more effective than most other pre-shaves.
Cella is a classic. Many shavers (myself among them) claim they would be happy if they only had Cella to shave. You did not mention that you are not using the original cream (with the almond aroma) but the Riserva Fresco version (a bit harder than the original cream... more like a soap), with notes of citrus fruits, elemi, basel, jasmin and a touch of tonka. By the way, the dude's name is Felice (Fe-lee-che).
Fantastic review, Matt! Your breakdown of the Cella Milano Shaving Soap and Rex Premium Razor was spot on. I could almost smell that almond scent through the screen! Love how you demonstrated the lathering process and showed the razor’s precision in action-it really helped me visualize the experience. This duo definitely seems like a must-have for any wet shaving enthusiast. Thanks for the detailed insights!
Ordering the Cella now, great review Matt! I love those old school soaps. Thanks again and cudo’s to you for bring awareness to an important men’s health issue!
As the comment below, Cella was the first soap I ever tried when I went down this rabbit hole, and I loved it. There have been so many soaps since then, I've forgotten how much I liked it. Looks like it might be next on my list...thanks for the reminder
I'm dying to see what you think of the Mühle Rocca. It's the perfect Goldilocks razor between the too mild and too much blade feel Mühles you've recently used. It's excellent with the Rex blades. They really nailed that head geometry.
Great shave Matt. I absolutely love cella red. I found the soap to be super dense almost like a triple milled one. You hardly need much for a rich creamy slick lather. The small sample I was sent to try lasted me really long.
Beauty video, Matt!! Cella always gave me a slick-as-snot lather without the huge volume. Seeing as I would rather have the slickness that was a huge plus for me. Never tried a Muhle - going to get one to give it a whirl. A mild razor is my preference for times I need to shave every day. Happy holidays to you and the entire RE crew!!
I've managed to avoid getting weepers on the chin by applying a good amount of coconut oil before the shave. It doesn't stick to your hands like some pre shave oils, rinses off nice and easy.
Great shave video Matt. I have used Cella and it really produces a slick lather. I have never j had a bad shave with it. In fact, it's one of my go to soaps for my headshaves. I also have the Mühle R102 which is an R41 with a white resin handle. I use it for my headshaves as well and really does an awesome job.
Hey Matt! Cella always reminds me of those Christmas almond cresent cookies😂. It's actually a great scent for this time of year! It has very good performance too! I hope the Muhle line does good for you. Big difference in the R89 and R41! The R41 isn't for the faint of heart that's for sure. But, if you take your time, it provides an excellent shave! The R89, in my opinion, is great for one day's growth. All their razors are well constructed. Thanks as always for your reviews! JimG
I have and I use cella soap, it smells really good, but I have an urge to drink a glass of Amoretta after shaving with it! I have used the Muhle, but you have spoiled me with the Gold trim Gillette adjustable! That is a great razor, not sure what year it was from, but you all did a great job of restoring and putting that gold trim on it! Keep up the god work, my friend!
Nice review once again Matt. I'd love to see you do a video with your take on the Muhle Rocca razor- especially the R95 with that gorgeous birch bark handle. This razor is designed to sit between the R89 and R41 in aggression. For me it lives in that magic goldilocks territory and makes for a great daily driver....cheers.
Hi guys, I recently purchased Muhle r89, if you’re looking for a great very mild razor, this is it. Completely different from the Edwin Jagger. Both great razors having said that.
I really appreciate the authentic way you make these videos. Having a weeper, having to do a two pass shave. I like it versus the everything works perfect all of the time. Also now knowing how mild the razor is, would you pick a different blade to dial it in for what you prefer?
P.S. For shaving your chin? Your Rex Konsul dialed all the way down. Gillette Nacet blade. That Permasharp you like so much is a bit too rough/sharp and it's probably the main cause of your nicks/weeper issue on your chin.
Tobin Fetters did a side by side comparison with feeler gauges with the Muhle and the EJ. He found the EJ was slightly more efficient than the Muhle. There is a slight difference in the head geometry. And yes, after several years I'm still using the 1K brick of Cella I bought :)
@@RazorEmporium Now understand I have ALOT of soaps now so I don't use it as much. But I've had mine for about 15-16 years. I have a picture of what's left next to a tub of soap. You could see how much is left :) I also highly recommed the Cella aftershave as well as PAA Chella Cool!

When researching babershop fougere scents, I read that in the US, the smell is clubman, but in Italy, the traditional barbershop is "Almondy." Now, I know why! Kinda think the mustache goes well with the old school Italian product.
Good stuff Matt and shave done well💈💈 Cella is really great soap, I'm not into Almond too much but the Aloe formula is super. REX Premium Razor?..last minute mix-up. Nice results with the Muhle R-89, mild but efficient. Thanks for the review and video.
Hello, and thank you for the review. The one in your hand is the SANDALWOOD version (its price on the Italian website 'RasoiGoodfellas' is €35,95), but they have another one under the name 'RISERVA FRESCO'. The gentleman's name (the Cella brand's iconic face) is 'Mr Felice (Mr Happy)' which the Italians pronounce 'Feliche' with emphasis on the 'Ch'. (You mentioned his name in one of your old videos.) I hope you have a pleasant day. Cheers. . . . . . . . . . . . . PS: You wrote 'Edwin Jagger' in the video title.
My first safety razor was a King C Gillette, which has fallen out of my rotation. My second was an R89 that I regularly use to this day. Mild yes, but fantastic when you want a cleanup shave for minimal stubble and want to avoid irritation. Comfortable, smooth shave. Great introductory razor.
Do you think the razor heads are the same or very similar between your King C Gillette and Muhle R89? Just from looking at the head of the R89 from the video and Razor Emporium site, it looks similar to the King C Gillette that I own.
Hello, you are using so much time with your first pass on your goatee area. I can recommend that; just finish the first pass quickly and do an across the grain second pass (ear to chin) on your goatee area.
the old mans name is felicis. usually there is a card in the box with a story about Cella and felicis the maker I think. Great soap one of my favorite soaps during the holiday season
The Gentleman's name is 'Mr FELICE (Mr Happy)' which the Italians pronounce 'FELICHE' with emphasis on the 'CH'. (Matt mentioned his name in one of his old videos.)
Hi Matt, enjoy the opening musical theme of these vids. I see your shaving brush when dry, is much thicker than mine, and it lathers so quickly. Which one are you using for these vids? Thank you, Dave
I have the same issue as you just did with the Merkur 23C long handle, meaning it takes me several passes in different directions to get a close shave. I thought that was because the blade gap is too small and thus, I am looking for an adjustable razor. When you say "mild", "aggressive", etc, is that a function of the blade gap?
@@RazorEmporium Don't get me wrong, I'm not using a ruler while shaving either. But maybe you've used a steeper angle because you are used to get i.e. a certain sound, that 'feels' better to you as you are used to other types of razors. But imho the R89 cuts more efficient at a more moderate angle. I've been using it for a long time now and did many tests. But ofc ymmv and that's fine. Just my 2 cents.
I wish Muhle would make a razor head with no overhang. Call me a baby but I sliced my finger really bad last year and ever since I will not use a razor that does have end tabs exposed. Great video I need to try Cella. You're awesome Matt. One day I want to come out to a meet up, but it's a long way from the Midwest.
One of my first razors was r89 used a couple blades & shalved it(no reason) Q: could you do a shot out w/Voscod-teflon coated verses Rex blade? Thnx Mat
Cella soap is very expensive and difficult to obtain here in Mexico, unfortunately the only soap that does arrive, and that is not excessively expensive is Proraso.
Matt, I think this version of Cella is a little different than the Cella in the smaller tub. Personality, having used both, I prefer the version in the smaller tub rather than this one (I believe it's called "Fresco."
But was the difference between the razors or the blades? You should have taken the Rex blade out of the Muhle and put it into the Jagger to be sure. I have the Muhle Hexagon, which uses the same head and I really like it. I also have the Muhle Companion, which is a very different geometry. It's a bit more aggressive to me. I recommend you try it. I really like the Cella soap. If I didn't have so many other soaps I could buy the block and be very happy shaving with nothing else for however many years it would take me to go through it. That aluminum bowl looks new to me. Is it a larger size that the 150 gram plastic jar?
So of course I had to look it up. It's 300 grams and it's Extra Extra Professional. Does that "Extra Extra" apply to just the quantity or is the formulation different than the classic Cella? Regarding the man's name, sweet almond translates to "mandorla dolce". If he was a gangster in one of the five families his nickname would probably be Tony Sweet Nuts.
The Twins are the newest members of the CELLA Family. Those are 300ml or 10.2oz tubs and one of them is SANDALWOOD and the other is RISERVA FRESCO. They write 'Extra Extra' on their BIO soap (the green one) as well, but these are 'Extra Extra Professionale'. The Gentleman's name is 'Mr FELICE (Mr Happy)' which the Italians pronounce 'FELICHE' with emphasis on the 'CH'.
I wonder if your experiencing a different efficiency with the R89 (Muhle) compared to the DE89 (Edwin Jagger) comes from using different blades. I went back and one of the last videos during which you used the DE89, you loaded it with a Permasharp. Did you check what blade was sitting in your Edwin Jagger ? I was under the impression that the head was jointly developed by Edwin Jagger and Muhle and that the geometry was the same but I could be wrong of course. You should try them side by side with a Permasharp in both just to confirm for science. Cella performs amazing for its price point.
Is it the razor or the blade? I have used the new Rex Blades a few times. I have found that blade appears to have one good edge. When in the razor one side edge of the blade will shave nice, when I rotate the razor 180 to the other side it is terrible. It is impossible to use. I have tried the blade in the Rex Konsul, a Rockwell adjustable, and a RazoRock Wonderbar. Same result in all of the razors.
His name is 'Mr FELICE (Mr Happy)' which the Italians pronounce 'FELICHE' with emphasis on the 'CH'. (Matt himself mentioned his name in one of his old videos.)
His name is "Felice", which means "Happy"! He became the mascot of the brand post-WW2, when Cella was reforming their image to appeal to all the men coming home with their government-issued safety razors!
His name is 'Mr FELICE (Mr Happy)'. . . . . . . . . . . . . PS: The word 'CUMPÀ' is an Italian term of address which means Friend, Brother, Comrade, and Cousin or Godfather.
Matt can you make video with top 5 or top 10 most expensive Safety DE razors?! It will be nice to know❤. Thks P.S. and mean not exact price but rich of material. The quality.
The Cella shave he used in this video is a different line, the classic line ranges from $10-$15 for a tub versus the extra professional line is say $35-$40 per tub. The classic line is a 4 ounce (around) container/tub and the extra professional line a much larger size of 10 ounces. He used the fresco scent for this video.
@@danaochmanski Mat used the SANDALWOOD one in this video. You can see the writing 'BUONGIORNO AL SANDALO' on the tub. You did explain the differences very well, just one other difference: the 300ml (10.2oz) tubs are made of metal (Aluminium) and the 150ml (5.2oz) tubs are made of plastic.
Matt u getting weeper on chin n unable to get clean shaven in chin area make me feel happy n normal 😁 so u aren't some magician at getting easy shave at chin area
I have a Muhle R95 and an R108, and for me they are rather mediocre shavers. The old guy logo for Cella is Mr.Felice. For me I have better results making the lather in a bowl rather than straight out of the container. Scoop some out and add water as needed to make a good lather. Although I prefer the Proraso tube creams I would like to get one of those big Cella kilo bricks. Okay now that the goatee is gone let's give a straight razor or shavette a go again.
This new formula you are using is not the classic almond scented tallow based soap. the new "Professionale" formula is not tallow based, is not almond scented and is completely different. Please re-shoot this video and make it accurate.
@@RazorEmporium So, are you going to withdraw it and re-shoot it? If not, you are going to mislead a lot of people. I have both the original and Professionale soaps and they are very, very different.
If I have ever seen this, I now know why I haven’t used it. I won’t use anything but tallow based if I can at all help it. My stubble is too coarse and I need the slickness and buffering of tallow.

He became the mascot of the brand post-WW2, when Cella was reforming their image to appeal to all the men coming home with their government-issued safety razors!
Muhle R41 next?
Already did it. Coming soon
Looks like the Cella comes in a metal bowl now? I thought the very small plastic bowl was hard to get soap on my brush
Different varieties
Hope you do Review on the Rocca Razor, if sell.
Goomba is the Old Guy.
Believe that is Italian for Grandpa.
Thks
P.S. and mean not exact price but rich of material. The quality.
Love that big Cella bowl but don't like almond in general 😦
Did u mention that the red one is a tallow soap? Maybe that’s why it’s so thick to you?
Where are you from
Matt, you've got to get rid of that quacking stool 😂
last time i clean shaved Dec 2003 or Jan 2004 dont remember
Magnum PI ain't got nothing on Matt P with that stache!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I apologize if its a dumm question, why is this Cella more expensive than before
The Cella shave he used in this video is a different line, the classic line ranges from $10-$15 for a tub versus the extra professional line is say $35-$40 per tub. The classic line is a 4 ounce (around) container/tub and the extra professional line a much larger size of 10 ounces. He used the fresco scent for this video.
Correct 💯 we literally got this in the day before the shoot and didn't brush up on it (pun intended) beforehand lol
@naochmanski thank you, I was not aware. I love Cella so it's a must try
I like mild razors but Muhle barely cuts.
I thought it was Babbo Natale when I first looked at the package
As my wife would say, “it’s growing on me, like a fungus”
I got a kilogram of Cella. Nothing like having enough.
Matt u getting weeper on chin n unable to get clean shaven in chin area make me feel happy n normal 😁 so u aren't some magician at getting easy shave at chin area
Felice is the name
this isnt the og cella formula maybe thats why its behaving differently
You're a beautiful human being.
4 passes is some serial killer stuff😂
I have a Muhle R95 and an R108, and for me they are rather mediocre shavers. The old guy logo for Cella is Mr.Felice. For me I have better results making the lather in a bowl rather than straight out of the container. Scoop some out and add water as needed to make a good lather. Although I prefer the Proraso tube creams I would like to get one of those big Cella kilo bricks.
Okay now that the goatee is gone let's give a straight razor or shavette a go again.
Milan… an old guy… Leonardo Da Vinci! 😅
We can name him Giovanni, which might get me cancelled
Lol
The chin really does need special attention. 👨🔬
His name is VITO !!!!
His name is Mr FELICE (FELICHE) which means Mr HAPPY.
This new formula you are using is not the classic almond scented tallow based soap. the new "Professionale" formula is not tallow based, is not almond scented and is completely different. Please re-shoot this video and make it accurate.
You're right.
@@RazorEmporium So, are you going to withdraw it and re-shoot it? If not, you are going to mislead a lot of people. I have both the original and Professionale soaps and they are very, very different.
Yet another soap ruined by the manufacturer, replacing doing-well tallow with glycerin for no reason...
I agree, why they doing it, is it cheaper to make
If I have ever seen this, I now know why I haven’t used it. I won’t use anything but tallow based if I can at all help it. My stubble is too coarse and I need the slickness and buffering of tallow.
The is from The Razor Company, for the Red that Matt used here. They have a vegan green which does not have tallow.

I have two Muhle razors, the R89 and the R41. I really like the REX blades. In my top 2 ranking for blades. I have used the cherry almond Cella a number of times and I really like it.
You can get cella red, not reserve one used here, with tallow.
One of my first razors was r89 used a couple blades & shalved it(no reason) Q: could you do a shot out w/Voscod-teflon coated verses Rex blade? Thnx Matt
Maybe soon
