I played through this game right after watching this video and it's awesome. Not quite A Link to the Past, but almost as fun. The animals really add something unique that you don't see in many other games. Instead of the typical bow, candle, magic whatever item, they give you a bunch of animals that either improve your abilities or let you do things you couldn't do without them. It would've been cool if there were more combinations that did something, but the things you could do by combining some were a really great touch. Every Zelda fan needs to play this game.
Underrated but the price doesn't allow a regular player to buy it... In my case, I don't like playing in emulators... But I think there is no other option
Landstalker was definitely the system’s “answer” to Zelda in 1993 but it is far from a clone. For starters the isomeric perspective was something very different especially given the focus on platforming. Some found that aspect frustrating but the perspective also gave the game world a solidity that comparable games lacked.

I spent all my remaining money on it, bummed meals for the rest of the trip, and played it late into the night when I got back home (already late at night). Totally worth it! Later I did the same thing on another school trip, finding a copy of Shining Force CD at a Microplay in a mall. I never saw another copy in the wild... we're totally spoiled today with online commerce!

do you know how many extremely blatant clones of their games exist and nintendo is allowing to exist even on their own, modern consoles like the nintendo switch?
You can't copyright mechanics, and the game really had nothing to do with Zelda, it is an adventure game, but, please check it, it has really awesome things like combining animal powers and time travel
@Michael Persico, nah, Nintendo has an official version of Giana Sisters nowadays. So that is not a problem. I bet it rather is not on the Sega folks radar, they simply forgot it exists.
LAY THE SMACKDOWN ON YOUR CANDY ASS FOR THAT UNEDUCATED BULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLSHIT. Alundra is the spiritual successor to Landstalker- the best game ever made.
@brendan wright Weird. 30 hour average playtime for an RPG is "too long"? Bad story when it's vastly superior to pretty much all Zelda games? Infuriating dungeons when the increased difficulty was welcomed from how easy the Zelda series is? I view Alundra as a Zelda game for older gamers. More mature narrative and increased difficulty, along with platforming.
it's worth it. the different animals give you a lot to play with. some combinations lead to special effects - for example lion (fire magic) + penguin (ice magic) gives strongest ice magic (don't ask :) ) only "problem" - it's a bit to easy ^^
This is one of the best games on the Megadrive, I played it relentlessly when I was a kid. In fact I'd even say it was better than Zelda. The music was great to, you should have given it a mention. It has quite a sad ending as well which when it happens makes you stop and think about what you've been doing the entire game!
It always confused me how the word "clone" is used in the video game industry. How can this be a Zelda clone with dozends of animal companions giving you unique attacks and a jumping character just to name two very different aspects that are not just "small details", that's like the opposite of what "clone" means per definition, it doesn't even have open world like wtf. There were famous "clones" in the industry with the correct meaning of the word, using a game or even copying the code at several points and just putting other sprites, colours, names, etc. on it but this is to me much more than a clone and I absolutely love what I see, maybe will try to find it for an emulator or something, thanks for showing me a new seemingly great game.
would "rip off" be a better description? The fact that they took Link to the Past and reverse engineered it doesn't make this a game not worth playing. I'd just look at it as a second quest to Zelda and still enjoy it. much of what they added makes for an interesting playthrough.
Sega consoles hosted more closer/accurate Zelda clones before. Golden Axe Warrior and Golvellius: Valley of Doom are 2 such games that came out on the Master System.
When I discovered emulation, back in mid '00s, I was ready to give a try to this game that I previously saw in an European gaming magazine. I had a blast! It was a real neat game.
It's actually the spanish word for "Crown". Like one of the most well known beers in the world, "Corona". It's more of a shocker to see how people are flipping out about the word since the pandemic. It's cool Norman didn't make a big deal out of it in the video.
Great video Norm! I've never played this one and missed out on it back in the day. I think I was too busy playing Beyond Oasis! I will definitely emulate.
Played on Emulator; it is good, and better than I expected, though because of the ease it was not a long game (5-6 hours max) also love the ice area theme. The story is also better than Zelda's as it slowly reveled that the monsters are not in fact bad; but are district 9ed there. less mythic, and thus harder to continue.
"... first game was Ranger-X" That was their FIRST GAME? And they did this, too? Sorry, I love your channel but I have to play this for myself before seeing the rest. I'm sold on it now.
Dang i cant believe i never heard of this game back then during my Genesis days. I loved RPG and Zelda games and was bummed all the good RPGs were on SNES. But this looks tight and I definitely would have have swiped this up instantly!
I never heard of "Crusader" except maybe once or twice, but I used to hear good things about Shin Souseki all the time growing up in Illinois. Now I see why.
I loved Landstalker. Except that the view was confusing sometimes and some of those puzzles were just unfare. I’d say Landstalker is more Zelda than Centy is.
The problem with Landstalker was that it was full of 3D platforming sequences that were incredibly hard due to the confusing viewpoint of isometric 3D. The game was incredibly long and difficult and is one of the few 16-bits RPGs released in Europe nobody in my family ever finished, and not for lack of trying.
Great game. Played it as "Soleil". It was zalda-esque, yes. I remember thinking that at the time. Amazing game though, great music too. Highly recommend.

fawfulmark2 Cubivore is expensive? WTF, Just for collectors?
Thìs game still is one of my favourites, after all these years. The message it conveys is a lot different than zelda and a lot better than in most rpgs at the time.

@@DanielAyy i got the original sega genesis 16 bit so if you want to save your progress you got the pause the game and leave it on till you play again and pray it doesnt freeze in the meantime lol. I would totally invest in a repro for that sole reason .lol it would be worth it.
Corona
This game honestly looks phenomenal, I cannot believe this is the first time I’m hearing of this….
I just went on eBay and bought a reproduction cartridge for my Genesis, but I will probably get the rom and put it in my Genesis Mini to have it in higher quality. This game looks seriously good! I love the 2D Zelda games! I haven’t played a Link to the Past yet (I am planning on it though), but I have played Link Between Worlds and Link’s Awakening and I had a great time with those. This looks right up my alley! I’ll come back here after I play through it and give my thoughts!
I remember finding this game on an out-of-state class trip back in junior high school. I had read about it in Electronic Gaming Monthly but had never seen a copy anywhere else, and I knew I had to have it.
Wait. "Corona"? That's the character's name?
I also remembered a while back that the last area in mario sunshine was Corona Mountains. Coincidence?
Topical!
Don't even start buddy😂
That rings a bell..
You know "Corona" translates to "Crown" in Spanish, right? Not really hard to believe a fantasy character would be named that.
Sega had already done this years earlier on the Master System with the "Golden Axe Warrior" clone of the NES Zelda
There was also Golvellius: Valley of Doom on the Master System.
The OST on this game, man!!
You should ABSOLUTELY review Monster World 6 (The one with Asha, the green-haired girl as the playable character) another GREAT RPG from the Genesis that is suuuper fun and underrated

STOLEN COMMENT
While Beyond Oasis is also a good game, it's weird to me Sega never puts Centy on any of their re-release collections alongside it. And the part about Atlus publishing it in the West shouldn't be a problem since Sega owns them now so there's no publishing rights issue.
do you know how many extremely blatant clones of their games exist and nintendo is allowing to exist even on their own, modern consoles like the nintendo switch?
You can't copyright mechanics, and the game really had nothing to do with Zelda, it is an adventure game, but, please check it, it has really awesome things like combining animal powers and time travel
@Michael Persico It has nothing to do with Nintendo. Streets of Rage is a Final Fight clone, and it's on every new Sega compilation.
Sega? You reading this?
@Michael Persico, nah, Nintendo has an official version of Giana Sisters nowadays. So that is not a problem. I bet it rather is not on the Sega folks radar, they simply forgot it exists.
Now do one on Sony's Zelda clone, Alundra.
Oh, that game was VERY good.
Better yet, do Brave Fencer Musashi!
@brendan wright Alundra has a great story, what are you talking about?
“Definitely give Crusader of Centy a try, even if it is only Zelda on the Genesis”
That’s all I need to convince me
it's worth it. the different animals give you a lot to play with.
some combinations lead to special effects - for example lion (fire magic) + penguin (ice magic) gives strongest ice magic (don't ask :) )
only "problem" - it's a bit to easy ^^
u hav come so far, ur videos get higher quality every year!
Watched my brother play through this a couple years back. This game is incredible!
"Come back when you have some hard cash, son."
AHEAD OF ITS TIME
Come back when you're a little, mmmm... RICHERR!
This is one of the best games on the Megadrive, I played it relentlessly when I was a kid. In fact I'd even say it was better than Zelda. The music was great to, you should have given it a mention. It has quite a sad ending as well which when it happens makes you stop and think about what you've been doing the entire game!
Wait, the ending was sad? I dont remember
Those are bad words! We don't say such vulgar words, somebody might hear you..!!! So don't say those 3 words again please! " better than Zelda"
This game was just released for NSO. First time playing and I'm really enjoying it.
Thankfully this game has been added to the Genesis games available on the NSO Expansion Pak.
It just how many players felt, it felt similar. Such as Okami, many say it a ' Zelda Clone ' , I think not. It has the Bushes. Well depends on you.
Thank you sir. From my point of view its a complete different and original game. with a way deeper plot that somehow explains and exposes racism.
would "rip off" be a better description? The fact that they took Link to the Past and reverse engineered it doesn't make this a game not worth playing. I'd just look at it as a second quest to Zelda and still enjoy it. much of what they added makes for an interesting playthrough.
Sega consoles hosted more closer/accurate Zelda clones before. Golden Axe Warrior and Golvellius: Valley of Doom are 2 such games that came out on the Master System.
@@jordicartes2297 Whoa Whoa Whoa.... What game are we talking about here?

It's actually the spanish word for "Crown". Like one of the most well known beers in the world, "Corona". It's more of a shocker to see how people are flipping out about the word since the pandemic. It's cool Norman didn't make a big deal out of it in the video.

Great video Norm! I've never played this one and missed out on it back in the day. I think I was too busy playing Beyond Oasis! I will definitely emulate.
Sega should make The Crusader of Centy: Respiration of the Natural World
Played on Emulator; it is good, and better than I expected, though because of the ease it was not a long game (5-6 hours max) also love the ice area theme. The story is also better than Zelda's as it slowly reveled that the monsters are not in fact bad; but are district 9ed there. less mythic, and thus harder to continue.

Genesis action-RPGs....I was always partial to Landstalker myself.

light crusader was even better.
I loved Landstalker. Except that the view was confusing sometimes and some of those puzzles were just unfare. I’d say Landstalker is more Zelda than Centy is.
Landstalker and its sequels are my favourite rpgs ever.
No intro!???....I love your intros....the bring an excitement build up effect.
Glad to see this coming to Switch!

Yes. Also the whole "Zelda clone" label possibly damaged the game's popularity more than it helped.
Because calling it just a "clone" makes it sound like something cheap, lazy, unoriginal and inferior.
