You are the composer? It rather seems like a coop effort, Johann Strauss Jr being the main contributer with ~3,5 tracks opposed to your single one. How was the choice made to adapt classical music, was time short? Or did somebody say the music in the older Asterix game was inappropriate, and classical music was a safer bet?
You are right schtolteheim. I think all of the tracks are reprogrammed versions of classical pieces by famous composers except one which I composed myself. However all the pieces were reprogrammed by myself. A process which requires an amount of discipline as the pieces had to be squashed down into 5 note polyphony. So, if you like a more accurate credit would be arranged by me for the megadrive. The choice of music was made by Stefan Walker, the lead programmer / designer. It was not a time issue, nor was it any reflection on past games. It was a purely creative decision, and something which we agreed could be done.
I found a prototype-rom which is better in some ways. Coins from chests simply get strewn to the ground, which is nice. Who needs to see them run in circles in the air for two seconds like in the finished version? There is also a cute animation for when Asterix bumps his head on a ceiling, which must have been removed subsequently. The finished product is sub-optimal in many ways. What with those gigantic bonus pearls which spell out "200", that is extremely distasteful! When I saw that at merely eleven-years-old I found it dubious. Wild boars kill you instantly in this game, that is so fucked up that it can only be a malignant prank. Noone can misunderstand the source material that badly. This game is the kind of middling Euro-trash that would have been a perfect fit for the Amiga.
ah, one of the most memorable games of my childhood that also introduced me to the classical music... i still remember writing walkthroughs for the imaginary sequels :D
I remember when the only video of the full game on UA-cam was mine! I only played the full game though, and had no idea about the hidden items (there weren't even walkthroughs at the time my video was released). It really is nice to see someone blow my video out of the water AND get all the items! Great job!
I remember having this as a kid. It was soooo f'ing hard! Even watching this it looks like it would be awfully tough but you've made it look easy! Love the music in it.
Yea I had that game too and it was very hard used to get soo frustrated lol but i liked the asterix and obelics movies and cartoons brings me back to childhood
Thank you for the upload. I remember playing and beating this game as an 8 year old on my sega genesis and finishing it after hours and hours of trial and error! This was before the internet so the amount of joy when i beat this game by myself is indescribable. Almost 20 years later i find this video on youtube.... brings back memories!
I loved this soundtrack as a kid and it introduced me to some beautiful classical music particularly J.S Bach Air on the g string what a beautiful track perfect game over music.
I was always puzzled with those weird rocks that were supposed to make you get to higher places. The secret was in the Germanic forest all along! Thanks for helping solve a childhood mystery. Now I can reach 100% completion.
A big thank to all developers of this game! :,) (in case one of them is looking at this 🤭). This game, Dynamite Headdy and Parodius were my three big videogame influences of classic music when I was a kid, which makes the nostalgia way bigger ✨
One of my favorites Megadrive games as a kid. I could never complete it though, I reached the "Road To Rome" level, I couldn't believe I made it that far, it was a extremely hard game. Lots of fun and great memories anyway. Absolutely love the soundtrack, all the classical music, I had no idea when I was a kid. Probably the only game I remember that had text on screen in 5 different languages. Since I didn't knew a single word of english as a kid, back then, that was a huge feature. You make it look like a piece of cake like all gameplays, but this game was very hard. Also an extremely underrated game, look how little views this gameplay has compared to others. Anyway, thanks for the upload.
I do agree! Being a kid, not having internet, no one to ask....it was quite difficult. X Men And Spiderman, The Tick were also very, very difficult to beat. Games like this you have to die a lot, memorize every level, boss and so on and maybe you'll beat them. There are games that i just wasn't able to beat, but were a ton of fun.
i don't understand why we collect other items in each level like cheese, silver cross and gold ring. Are they just like a trophy and can't be used anywhere?
I remember when my grandmother spend all her monthly income in this game for me in my birthday it costed 60€ in that time . I used to play a A lot and I still got the original game kept .
Ah yes, good times. The Germanic Forest and also the jumping from boat to boat at the beach were the hardest parts for me back then. Though I always felt the ending was too abrupt.
oh,my god...i can't thank you enough for this.i've been wandering for years about those items(i thought they unlock the fireworks at the end, guess i was almost right).super skills also, you got yourself a subscriber!one question:this is not tool-assisted,right?
It would be amazing if we could get a modern remake (maybe with few new twists) of this classic gem!!! Hopefully one day this will happen! For me this is the best Asterix & Obelix game!
Nice walk through... I have seen you collected all hidden item that covered by lighting. What are the function of them? I cant find it in this video? Would they makes different the ending? Thank you...
I remember playing this game a long time ago, but sadly I never got past the road to Rome stage. How did you unlock or get that ability to break through walls? That is something I always wondered. Or how do you make the boulders float?
I'm not sure exactly what you are talking about but I found using Obelix much easier in that level by just using his uppercut. However I never thought to use that kicking ability with Asterix. Regardless I still beat it with Asterix but it takes 30 hits as apose to 3 without using obelix or that kicking ability.
Hi! I play the game again and what drives me crazy is the following...at level 1 the Gaulish Village there are 3 entrance to the back of the map...If you go into the second entrance, behind the second campfire into the area... there are wooden struts in the air when you jump. But I've never figured out how to get up there or what's there. Does anyone have an idea?
i will always remember this game just cuz of the music when u enter the village lol :D btw i couldnt beat this game on easy and he goes straight to hard and no damage lol :D and is this a walkthrough or speedrun cuz he playing it like its speedrun lol :D
Wonderful game, ruined by its soundtrack IMO. Why poor remixes of classic musics instead of specific ones ? I don't get it. EDIT - Still, it's really great to hear all of those Great Rescue SFX in Power of The Gods !
Great walk through! I'm the original composer and sound designer. Can't thank you enough for posting and keeping these classic games alive!
Yup, it's true. I'm glad you like it!
i would like to thank you for the game that brought the comics i love to life so well and a sound track i whistle almost 2 decades after playing
Jamie Watt No problem Jamie, Glad you like it, and are still whistling the tunes. Good man!

I just love how the people that worked on this game casually comments here!
Thanks. And our pleasure. It's great to still see so much support for our work so long ago. Thank you for that! :-)
@@NathanMcCree It's just so rare to see such a thing. Really shows the dedication of the people involved :)
Very good work. I'm the original programmer, and even I couldn't play it that well!
Thanks)
One question bothers me for years. What is the real purpose of those secret items in spheres? Only for different ending?
Yep. Just a different ending. Sorry it wasn't more. I had a very tight schedule to get that game done!
I found a prototype-rom which is better in some ways. Coins from chests simply get strewn to the ground, which is nice. +berserkerclaw I was the programmer, i worked with the Artist/Designer Richard Morton who designed the levels.

Love the music in it.
Thanks David! It was a challenge compressing down a full orchestra to just 5 notes polyphony! (1 was reserved for sound effects).
Yea I had that game too and it was very hard used to get soo frustrated lol but i liked the asterix and obelics movies and cartoons brings me back to childhood
Wouldn't that be the much worse Great Rescue that you're talking about?

the only Asterix game with Classical music.
Asterix and the magic cauldron: I’m I a joke to you?
I loved this soundtrack as a kid and it introduced me to some beautiful classical music particularly J.S Bach Air on the g string what a beautiful track perfect game over music.
I remember playing this when i was a kid, until my dad smash my console for too much playing. Fun times
В детстве очень цепляли аранжировки классической музыки в этой игре.)
I remember dying a lot. Great fun though.
Thanks for this walkthrough! Remind me a lot of memories...
Through this game i have discovered that the nice music i was hearing on the background when i was a kid - was classic masterpieces.
Road to Rome made 10 years old me rage quit the game. I can't believe I was this close to the end :o
Never found about those potions
HOLY SHIT!! you have the true power of the gods at this game. 90% of the moves you pull off, I had no idea of.
I was always puzzled with those weird rocks that were supposed to make you get to higher places. The secret was in the Germanic forest all along! Thanks for helping solve a childhood mystery. Now I can reach 100% completion.
When I played it in my childhood, for me this game was Asterix and the Great Rescue 2.
A big thank to all developers of this game! :,) (in case one of them is looking at this 🤭). This game, Dynamite Headdy and Parodius were my three big videogame influences of classic music when I was a kid, which makes the nostalgia way bigger ✨

В детстве проходил эту игру, но так и не понял для чего нужно было собирать предметы в сферах
This is like the first version of dark souls ever.Love that game so much!
Can somebody explain to me what are those items that you collect in the transparent circles that are on every level? Never figured out their purpose.
One of my first games, I never got through the second level.
It was so hard
Ah yes, good times.

Wonderful game, ruined by its soundtrack IMO. Why poor remixes of classic musics instead of specific ones ? I don't get it.
