The announcer was played by Bob Uecker. He was a player in the '60s and then became more well known as the announcer for the Milwaukee Brewers for decades. He's known as Mr. Baseball.
I wasn't into sports much as a kid, but I vividly remember Bob Uecker from the ABC sitcom, Mr. Belvedere. For a baseball legend, he is a surprisingly good, funny actor.

He was also in a bunch of commercials, especially a series of popular beer ads featuring lots of athletes and sports celebrities during the 80s.
@@joeconcepts5552 There is a fantastic mini documentary here on YT about him that covers his absolutely terrible playing career all the way up to basically present. The thing that surprised me was his Tonight Show appearances and how much Carson loved him

The guy who plays Pedro Cerrano (Dennis Haysbert) was actually hitting those balls. He played only Little League Ball but had the gift to keep those things that he learned and actually was knocking those out of the ballpark during all Major League movies.
And Charlie Sheen was a pitcher in school. He couldn't throw anywhere close to as fast as portrayed, but could actually pitch so they didn't have to use much trickery to shoot him throwing the ball.
TBF they weren't _trying_ to strike him out or get him to pop out. The script called for him to connect so they threw him cookies and meatballs.
One of the many memorable quotes from Bob Uecker. “The highlight of my baseball career came in Philadelphia’s Connie Mack Stadium when I saw a fan fall out of the upper deck. When he got up and walked away, the crowd booed.”

The drummers are a riff on John Adams, who came to nearly every Indians home game with his bass drum for 47 years until COVID and health problems ended his streak. He still roots for the Indians from home and was probably the most famous baseball fan in the country.

I know it's for UA-cam reasons so you couldn't show it, but when Vaughn relieves Harris and walks in as the entire stadium sings Wild Thing, always gave me goosebumps 🔥
Every major character was well-defined and memorable. The action was action really good. The actors knew how to swing a bat, unlike so many baseball movies. The stadium felt alive. A comedy with heart. A sporting classic!
As a European, this is my favorite sports movie of all time. I kid you not. Watched it first when I was in elementary school.

This is my dad’s favorite movie, when we talk we recite lines from the movie.
Fun fact, one of the trainers in the movie was Steve Yeager, cousin of U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Chuck Yeager. Steve used to play for the Dodgers during the 1970’s and ‘80’s. He actually trained the actors on set to learn some of the basics of baseball, so his role was more of a cameo. He was the guy who said “okay that’s enough fast balls, throw him some breaker balls”.
Fun fact: the big dude who Vaughn strikes out at the end (and was the Yankees most feared hitter) was played by Pete Vuckovich who was actually a pitcher in the majors for 12yrs, and actually won the Cy Young Award in '82.
And the Yankee reliever, "The Duke," was played by former Dodgers catcher Steve Yeager.
I saw Pete at a local bar recently.
He's from Johnstown Pa/ East Conemaugh and he moved back here.

@@rencro123 OK I figured it out. Duke Temple is the third base coach like you wrote. The Yankee reliever known as The Duke is played by a Willie Mueller. How about David S. Ward stop with all the "Dukes" in his scripts.

The 80's is arguably the best decade for comedies. Major League is an all time classic.
So many moments I love in this film. Nothing beats the “Gimme Vaughn!” scene. Gets me going!

Ken Burns documentary Baseball would bring you up to speed. Baseball has some rather fascinating history.
Brit's invented Baseball, just the same game as the kids game Rounders but with a bigger bat lol. Rounders was only game I was good at, at school.

Uecker appeared on the Tonight Show many times in the 80s and early 90s. His deadpan humor even had Johnny cracking up.
Him and Yogi Berra are probably the two funniest people in baseball history.
I remember watching this in the cinema not knowing anything about it other than it was a baseball comedy and being blown away on how good it was...the scene where charlie sheen walks out of the pen in the final game to wild thing is one of the best moments ever in a movie for me,loved it.
Dennis Haysbert, who played Cerrano, is also very well known for playing the President in the TV series 24.
he was also in a military show called the unit it was really good too just like 24
The play Jake called for at the end is the "suicide squeeze". One of the best sports movies of all time, imo
Bob Uecker is such a legend. He's almost 90 years old and still announces Milwaukee Brewers games. And, he's one of the funniest people ever. He used to appear many times on the Johnny Carson show as "Mr. Baseball". Hilarious interviews.
This and Platoon were huge movies for me growing up in the 80s, child of Vietnam vet, and huge baseball fan. Watching Charlie Sheen and Tom Berenger in both was surreal. Love this movie bigly - thanks for review!

I'm always impressed when actors can act together in 2 different movies and create a completely different dynamic between the 2 movies. For Berenger and Sheen to go from mortal enemies in Platoon to basically best buddies in Major League and for both relationships to feel completely realistic is impressive from both a writing and acting standpoint.
Excellent analysis of Dorn going over to Vaughn on the mound in order to calm his nerves so that they could win the game. Very insightful.
I was about 9 years old when this movie was filming. It actually takes place at Milwaukee County Stadium (which was torn down and eventually Miller Park was built on the site). I remember being super disappointed that I couldn't be an extra in the stands because our family was going on vacation at that time.
Great movie, and I love watching it because I get my nostalgia fix for County Stadium, which I spent a ton of time at when I was little and fell in love with baseball.
The use of that Randy Newman song at the beginning is absolutely perfect.

They filmed this in the old Milwaukee Brewers stadium and the whole city was buzzed when they came. A few of my freinds went to the end game when this was filmed and were in the stands singing "WILD THING!". They were so excited the next day! Bob Ueker's voice is synonomous with summer. If you were outside playing, washing your car or gardening.... You heard his pleasant voice on some radio outside in the neighborhood wherever you went. Hearing him speak sends you instantly back to the 1980's. Love that man and this film!

*Most realistic baseball action in any movie. Charlie Sheen was throwing in the upper 80's and the home runs WERE home runs. Unlike movies like The Babe where pop-ups were going 600 feet* 🤣🤣🤣
Realistic to the era in baseball at the time too, Charlie admitted to using steroids to increase his velocity.
charlie sheen actually planned on pursuing baseball and was going to go to kansas state on a baseball scholarship but had legal issues that resulted in him not graduating highschool

You guys were spot on when you said it was a feel-good movie- a perfect Friday night movie to watch with friends, a couple of beers and pizza.
The announcer was Bob Uecker- a baseball player, comedian, sportscaster and even sitcom comedian! His Wikipedia page is worth reading.
It's a completely different kind of movie, but I'll throw in my recommendation for Hot Shots.

I stomped at the movie 20 years ago, casually seeing it in TV and immediately fell in love with it. Such a fun movie! And the characters are so lovable. Also, this and To Wong Foo are two movies, Wesley Snipes is really killing it in comedic terms. After, he became this big action star, but besides Blade I like to enjoy his comedy more.
The sequel is not bad, but it's missing Snipes. But the announcer is the highlight of the sequel, so if you liked him here, check the sequel out :D
I guess Snipes decided comedies were beneath him, or something. They cast Omar Epps instead. While Epps is a fine actor, he wasn't Snipes. Major disappointment for me. That, and Corbin Bernsen's character was portrayed as a buffon in #2. Huge character change.
@@Caseytify Snipes started doing action movies, like Blade. He didn't want to risk being hurt f ou r a comedy. Thus, the character of Hayes did action movies in the off-season and spends all his time trying to get out of playing any. A direct roast of Snipes.
Another great movie which I'd totally forgot about. Another really good baseball movie you two should check out is A League of Their Own with Tom Hanks and Geena Davis.

This movie was actually a lot deeper it showed people from different backgrounds can get along with each other for one cause and in this case supporting their baseball team
You gotta watch Bull Durham now, with Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, and Tim Robbins.
This was an excellent film, still one of my favorite sports movies of all time. The Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Uecker as Harry Doyle just elevates the comedy, can't imagine the movie without him. Credit to him for being in every single movie in the series too, he's fantastic!
Rene Russo who played Lynn has been in a lot of great movies including Outbreak, Ransom, and Tin Cup. I’d love to see you react to some of these.
The Thomas Crown Affair, and she is Thor's and Loki's Mother in the Avenger and Thor movies.
Bob Uecker played professional baseball for 3 separate teams during his 6 year career (1962-1967) and is in The Baseball Hall Of Fame, but not as a player but as an announcer. He won the Ford C. Frick award that is only given out to legendary announcers, mostly for their knowledge but also for their personalities. His acceptance speech is extremely hilarious and had the entire audience laughing hysterically, including President George H. Bush.
Another classic sports comedy, in a similar vein, 'Slapshot,' with Paul Newman.

Charlie Sheen loved doing baseball films - this was also the time he was in Eight Men Out which is about the White Sox and the 1919 World Series.

he called the 97 world series on NBC w the Indians v Marlins. it just felt right.
Legendary film…I’m actually in the second movie….they filmed it here in Baltimore and my brother and I were extras in the stands…we are in several shots…we were like 13, 14 yrs old and huge baseball fans/players. I played at Maryland in college then Bowie triple A minor leagues, that’s as far as I got unfortunately…still was awesome
Very cool! My parents and I were in Baltimore to go to the aquarium one time and the stadium lights were on out of season- it was when they were filming it.

Fun fact, Dennis Haysbert (Cerano/State Farm guy) actually was a ballplayer in his youth. He was in another baseball movie, Mr. Baseball with Tom Selleck about baseball in Japan. He didn't have to fake his scenes. It's worth a watch too!

I was born and raised in CLEVELAND, OHIO and still live here now and THIS MOVIE is EVERY CLEVELAND INDIANS (well, NOW the "Guardians" but to ME they will ALWAYS BE THE INDIANS with the nickname of the TRIBE) HOPE TO SEE THIS HAPPEN FOR REAL!! (WHY didn't you at LEAST let the song "WILD THING" play for a LITTLE bit, because that was a BIG DEAL in the movie and became a "THING" for us Indian's fans. BEST PART OF THE MOVIE SINGING IT, and you DIDN"T show at least a LITTLE bit of them singing it) LAST time our team won a WORLD SERIES was in 1948 when I was ONE YEAR OLD. I am 75 NOW and STILL waiting! I HOPE I live LONG ENOUGH to see them WIN the WORLD SERIES. ( We WERE IN the SERIES in '95 and lost to the Braves, it was HEARTBREAKING. When "MAJOR LEAGUE" was first in the theaters, everyone in the theater was wearing their Indians gear, it was like being at a game . At the end we were all going crazy in the theater as if we had really won! I CRIED because I WANT THAT TO HAPPEN SO BAD while I am still alive, so I can EXPERIENCE IT. For some other baseball movies (that aren't as popular as others and are better than their reviews suggest), you should watch *Mr. Baseball* with Tom Selleck and more Dennis Haysbert, and *Mr. 3000* with Bernie Mac. Pretty good movies with some humor and good lessons and meaning.
Bob Uecker is an absolute legend in baseball (although, he fully admits he sucked as a player) for his commentating, and in TV and movies for this, his appearances on the Johnny Carson Show, and for his role as the father in the show Mr. Belvedere.
Saying this in all caps because it's true... YOU HAVE TO REACT TO HIS HALL OF FAME SPEECH!!! So good! His comedic timing is on-par with some of the greats. His story about the series with Phil and Joe Niekro (two players, one a teammate of Uecker and the other on the opposing team) had me in tears laughing the first time I heard it!
This is the most legit sports ending that I've ever seen. The fact that the Indians don't win this on any of the stereotypical endings, like a home run or a strikeout. This ending is awesome, when they talk about manufacturing a run in baseball, that is an example of that. I'm HAF now and rambling.This is one my favorite sports movies of all time.
I can watch the spring training sequences of this movie every day.
Uncle Buck, Spinal Tap, Raising Arizona and Dazed And Confused are pretty funny too, you should watch them.
I literally popped in my Uncle Buck DVD after reading this. Hadn't seen it in probably 20 years. I was dying laughing all over again.

Bob Uecker killed it as the voice of the Indians…hilarious
Baseball fan my whole life and a Braves fan through the 70's and 80's, so when this movie came out, I watched it over and over again to finally have something to cheer about when it came to baseball. Halfway through the '91 Braves season, I got to see this play out in real life so I didn't watch this movie again until last year when I discovered YT reactors LOL. I had forgotten how good it was, and how many lines I had stolen from the movie and use way too often.

Bob Uecker Is an absolute legend, and other than him drinking during the dames in this movie that is exactly how he would commentate the games in real life.
I can quote every line from this movie and would do so to the point that my mom refused to let me watch it when she was home! 🤣😂

Saw this movie as a kid and I still enjoy it immensely to this day. Great casting fun movie.
In the "Wild Thing" Special Edition DVD there is a twist ending that they decided not to use. In the twist ending, Lou Brown goes to Rachel Phelps and is about to hand in his resignation, when Phelps admits that they had no money to get any known players to play for the team, and had to settle for unknowns, and over the hill ball payers. Also, because they had no money, that explains the plane, the bus, no hot water in the showers, and no new therapies. She also reveals that the Miami deal was made up by her in hopes that a move might get the team to play harder. Also, she had adopted the "hated owner" bit in an effort to get the team to play better. She also tells Lou that she loves the team, and what, at first, looks like a random bunch of guys, was in fact a team personally scouted by her, (except Willie Mayes Hayes he was a surprise). Brown, after hearing all of this, including that she scouted him too for the team, takes back his resignation. But she warns him not to tell anyone about her admitting any of this, or she would fire him. There were also scenes of her eagerly cheering the team on, that had to be reshot. The director and producer said, in the commentary, that test audiences liked hatting her, so in the end they scraped the twist ending, and just made her the "hated owner".
Glad they kept the original ending. That other ending sounds bad.
I actually prefer the twist ending. It would have made the movie stand out more. I understand why they decided to just make her the "villain". But it would have changed almost nothing if they kept the surprise ending.
@@Lazrael32 I like the idea of the twist ending, but from the clips that I’ve seen of it it just falls flat and doesn’t work. Besides, they needed a villain as motivation. If she truly were revealed to be a good guy, the victory would feel hollow.
Now you need to do "Bull Durham", another classic baseball movie. Starring Kevin Costner, Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon. It's more of a drama and is more about baseball. Tim and Susan met on the movie and stayed together for 23 years.

Fun fact Charlie Scheen was actually throwing 88-93 mph. He actually had several offers to play college baseball when he finished high school.
I still remember being a kid and going to see this in the theater. To this day it remains one of the greatest baseball films ever made.
I would love to see a reaction to Necessary Roughness (1991) its also a sports comedy with a good cast.
And much better than The Replacements, which copied Necessary Roughness.
2nd greatest sport and football comedy ever. For me only Wildcats with Goldie Hawn is better

Oh man thanks for reacting to this. It's a huge favorite of mine. Always loved the leadership portrayed by Jake and the coach. All sports movies are underdog stories, but I don't think any do it better than this, as gritty as it is.
Also- Cerano's "Fuck you Jobu, I do it myself" is a line that always stuck with me about being confident in yourself.
This movie has some of the best quotes ever if you are a baseball fan. It's so great.

I got to meet Berenger and asked him about that. My comment, you guys hated each other in Platoon and are best buds in Major League and his response was "That's why they call it acting."

Uecker is also known as "Mr. Baseball". Since 1971, Uecker has served as a play-by-play announcer for Milwaukee Brewers radio broadcasts.
The majority of this film was filmed in Tucson, AZ. The training camp was at aHi Corbett Field, at Reid Park. Same for the later MLB parks. (Clever edits helped sell it).

Uecker always joked about going into the hall of fame as a player, but actually made it as a sports announcer. He is the play by play for the Milwaukee Brewers. He is also a very very funny guy. He was one of Johnny Carson's favorite guests on the Tonight Show. Bob also starred in the sitcom Mr Belvedere. He also appeared in several Miller Lite beer commericials. where he always remarks "I must be in the front row!" but in reality he gets moved to the nosebleed sections. Those seats are now referred to as Uecker seats and are commonly the cheapest and worsts possible.
the movie spawned 2 sequels. most of the cast, with the execption of Wesley Snipes, reprised their roles. Willie was played by Omar Epps.
In Mahor League 3; Back to the Minor, Scott Bakula takes over the starring role. some of the cast from Major League 2 appear in the the third movie. Bob Uecker appears in all three movies as Harry Doyle.
The power hitter Clu Hayward was portrayed by former Major League pitcher, Pete Vuckovich. He quipped that he never hit a homerum until appearing in the movie.
The role of Yankees relief pitch Duke Simpson was also portrayed by a former MLB pitcher Willie Mueller for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Although set in Cleveland, the movie shot mostly in and around Milwaukee because it was cheaper.
Another sports movie but this time football is Necessasry Roughness starring Scott Bakula (who starred in Major League 3).
Having grown up during the 80's when the Indians really were that bad every year, this movie really hit the spot since we could at least have fictional wins! Although within a year or two of this film, the team actually massively improved and had a terrific 90s.
Indeed. They got great first, but then the Yankees emerged and the Indians kind of petered out a little after 2001.
Growing up an Indians fan was rough. Watching them on channel 43 and wishing they were good. I cried actual tears of joy the first time I watched this movie.
They were pretty good until they tore down the original Indians stadium, then finked out by becoming the "Guardians." Feh.
If you havent done A League of their own yet I think youll like it. Tom Hanks, Rosie Odonell, Madonna and more. About the year they tried publicizing Womans baseball due to most of the men going to war.

One of my top 3 baseball movies. Watch it every year in the spring. -Cleveland won the pennant in 1995, 6 years after this movie came out
-this was a major factor in closers (then everybody) coming out to music
-Charlie Sheen was recruited for baseball in hs and was pitching in the 80s in the film (which is pretty impressive for a non athlete)
-Vagasil Pitcher Harris was modeled after a Gaylord Perry a real hall of fame pitcher that admitted to regularly cheating during his career
-many pro ball players say this one of the most accurate baseball movies because of all the interpersonal club house stuff
-Miami got a team in 1993
This and Sandlot are my favorite Baseball films. While I do like MAJOR LEAGUE 2, just know that it is sillier and every character is like a "caricature" of themselves.
I was in the 2nd one as a fan in the stands…shot it at Camden Yards here in Baltimore . You can see me and my brother singing “wild thing”…lol

When I was a kid, my uncles both lived in New York and would send me swag from their teams (one Mets, one Yankees). When I saw this movie in the theater, I wore my Yankees gear - cap, jersey, jacket - not knowing how the Yanks would be in the movie. Thankfully I wasn't asked to leave...
i was in the USAF and stationed in South Korea a year after this came out. the internet hadnt yet arrived so there were just a few movies we could watch on VHS. we watched this one every2-3 days. it was/is still hilarious. i know just about every line in this movie. thanks for sharing. you guys are awesome!!!

My sister in law was Rene Russo's personal assistant for a while. My stepson stayed the summer at Rene's house during the filming of "Ransom" with Mel Gibson. Rene's son in the movie was kidnapped (the plot), his name was Sean Mullen. My stepson's name was Sean Mullen! Rene gave him a 8x5 framed portrait signed "To Sean, Love, Mom". P.S. my sister in law is currently Channing Tatum's PA.
The play-by-play announcer is Bob Uecker. He was a real-life Major Leaguer who in addition to becoming an actor and comedian, is most well-known for being the play-by-play announcer for the Milwaukee Brewers for many decades. His nickname is "Mr. Baseball". The worst, nosebleed seats in stadiums are often jokingly referred to as the "Uecker seats" based on a television ad campaign where he was often given the worst seats in the stadium, but would shout criticism at the umpires anyway.

Having Bob Uecker as the announcer in this was like putting a cherry on top of a perfect confection. That little extra touch that made it all the better.
Also, I highly recommend you guys reacting to "A League of Their Own" (1992), with Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, and Lori Petty are great in this movie about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League inaugural season in 1943.
Every single scene with Wesley Snipes running is in slow motion. And it wasn’t just standard 80’s cheese like I assumed. But he was actually such a slow runner and so unathletic that they had no other choice but to cover it up as much as possible
I've heard also that Woody Harrelson was a better basketball player than Snipes when they made White Man Can't Jump.

This is one of my favorite sports comedies of the '80s. I had such a crush on Charlie Sheen back then. To answer your question about the secret language you were joking about the hand signals each team have those actually originated back in the 1900s when they were created for the first death baseball player and it was taken on by all teams so they could have their own communication that nobody else could understand. There is a movie called The silent natural you guys should check out that is based on the first death baseball player
