'Juuuuust a bit outside' is one of the lines that makes Bob Uecker a legend. In an alternate ending, Lou Brown was going to resign, but then Phelps told him her late husband owed a ton of back taxes, so that was the only way she could build the team.
That original twist ending was so much better than what was in the film. Rachel Phelps loved the city and the team, and had scouted the players herself, trying to find value where other teams hadn’t, because her dead husband had financially destroyed them. She was playing Moneyball before Billy Beane made it famous. But test audiences preferred the trite, and frankly sexist trope of the gold-digging, ex-showgirl owner.
My dudes....so glad you did this flick! Baseball is my favorite sport and this is one of my all time favorite baseball movies..well done. So glad y'all enjoyed it
Also the most realistic baseball action out there. The home runs were home runs. Charlie was throwing mid/upper 80's. None of that crap where an obvious pop out to second magically goes 500 feet.
In the "Wild Thing" edition of the Major League DVD, the original TWIST ending involved the reveal that Rachel Phelps, the owner, had actually used the potential move to Miami as a ruse to get the team to play better. That she really wanted them to win and pretended to be the villain to motivate them. I'm glad they cut this...
A fun Charlie Sheen movie is one he did with his brother, Men at Work. Of course, there's always Young Guns (II) also with Emilio Estevez and a stacked cast.
I actually need to see it again. It has been a looooomg time. The one scene that sticks out that I still remember is when he is tiptoeing across the lawn and Emilio is like "what is he doing?" And Sheen "what am I doing?" That always makes me chuckle. Ok...I need to watch it again now.
Another great underdog story and one that actually happened is “Miracle,” about the US Olympic hockey team in 1980 vs. the undefeated (since 1960) Russian team, starring Kurt Russell. You’ll love it!
Yankee's first baseman Clu Heywood was played by former major league pitcher Pete Vuckovich who played most of his career with the Milwaukee Brewers and was 1982 Cy Young Award winner. During filming Charlie Sheen was hitting 86 mph with his pitches.
Two more great underdog sports movies: Miracle, 2004, and Hoosiers 1986 Miracle is about the 1980 US hockey team, and Hoosiers is about high school basketball.
I literally live 30 seconds from the Hoosier Gym in Knightstown IN, which served as the Hickory home gym in the movie. Everything is the same, right down to the big black and white picture of Gene Hackman and the team. Shot baskets there a thousand times. Even rented it multiple times for my son's birthday. Awesome place.
@@theshadowfax239Only if it goes 65 innings lol, but I get your point. It's one of those sports I LOVE to play but honestly bores me on TV unless it's my team. It's like NASCAR that way. It's probably a blast to go 200 mph, but that puts me to sleep instantly if I try to watch it.
I used to watch this movie all the time with my dad. Fun fact, the guy who played the third base coach who says “okay Eddie that’s enough fast balls, throw him some breaking balls” was Steve Yeager. He’s a former Dodger’s player who actually served as a trainer on the set to train the actors. He’s General Chuck Yeager’s nephew. Speaking of the Cleveland Indians, in 1974 they did an outrageous promotion when they hosted the Texas Rangers. 10-cent beer knight. And the game was called off due to drunk and unruly fans.
A couple of good dramas with Tom Berringer are “Platoon”, “Betrayed”, “Sniper”, and “The Substitute”. And I totally agree with the suggestion for “The Chase” with Charlie Sheen. Really cool movie.
Juuuust a bit outside! Before Bob Uecker became the iconic Baseball/Sports announcer, he had the distinction of playing Catcher for the Milwaukee Braves and Atlanta Braves (with stops at St. Louis Cards and Philadelphia Phillies between the Braves' move). He provided some of the funniest play-by-play and color commentary, like the best way to catch a Knuckleball was to wait until it stopped rolling and pick it up. He spent about 6 years in the minors and 6 in the majors. He's still around at 89. Check out Charlie Sheen and his little brother Emilio Estevez in MEN AT WORK (Triumph Releasing 1990). It was also written and directed by Emilio.
Back in the 80s, playing catcher was a very dangerous job. If there was a play at the plate it was legal and encouraged for the base runner to run over the catcher in the hopes that he drops the ball in the collision.
Movies used to teach us that if you stalk and harass someone enough, they will eventually fall for you. I kid you not. It is a major theme of tons of movies from the 80s and earlier.
True: if you look at a lot of old movies, they pretty much deny the woman what she wants for what everyone else *knows* she *actually* wants… typically the guy. Better writing is fixing that, these days.

The Indians (now the Guardians) did go to three World Series since this movie came out. But the lost to the Braves 4-2 in 1995, to the Marlins 4-3 in 1997, and the Cubs 4-3 in 2016. My favourite is still the group up in the stand... too high, too high... how can it be too high? That's how we watch sports. Charlie Sheen - my top picks - Red Dawn, Wall Street, Young Guns, The Rookie, The Three Musketeers, The Arrival. Some of his movies are like watching the beginning career or a lot of big players. I live in Ohio and I don't understand it but I do appreciate how Hollywood loves Ohio for sports movies. You've got Major League 1 and 2, Draft Day where Kevin Costner is the general manager of the Browns, Little Giants was set in Ohio, Keanu Reeves was a QB from Ohio State in both The Replacements AND Point Break.
One of my favorites. Used to watch this with my dad every time it came on TV.
Definitely Platoon. His best Acting by far. It is up there with his Father in Apocalypse Now. Both are exceptional.
Red Dawn and The Outsiders (Charlie Sheen and Emilio Esteves) are full the "not yet famous".
Yo bartender Jobu needs a refill!😂😂
Charlie Sheen played an undercover cop in a biker gang in "Beyond the Law" which was based on a true story.
My favourite sports movie, so many great lines.
MONEYBALL! MONEYBALL! MONEYBALL! There you have one of the greatest Underdog Movies!
You guys are a riot. Your reactions are great, and I don't want to be a loser...
This movie has given me cold shivers for thitry four years.
