I love the scene where she only sees them through the camcorder, lowers it, raises it and they're now looking straight at her, that was haunting.

I love William Castle. He was definitely more a showman than a director, and you can tell he absolutely relished giving his audience a thrill. Its sad that he ended up a victim of his reputation: He still dreamed of being a serious Hollywood filmmaker later in his career, and tried to make it happen by directing Rosemary's Baby. But the financier knew having Castle as director would send the wrong message and insisted on Roman Polanski. In the end, Castle settled for a producer credit, and also has a Hitchcock-esque cameo in the film. Just another way Castle helped influence the horror genre, even late in his career.

The '99 remake also smashed a couple of horror movie tropes: final girl lives, with no zinger/twist ending AND her new friend, the "token black guy" not only survived the "first to die" cliche', but made it to the end!

Could also throw in, that there are two survivors. That happens, sometimes, in thrillers or action movies. But, kinda rare in the horror genre. 👍🏻 It's a cheesey flick, but I like the ending and some of those images were genuinely creepy, especially for it's time.

I cannot think of an abundance of films where that cliche statement applied. It didn't apply to any of the cornerstone slasher films. It didn't apply to any of the universal monster flicks. It didn't apply to any of George Romero's Living dead films. Or a number of others. The statement itself is a cliche, but the content behind it is far from it.

  • @EmDub01
    @EmDub01 3 роки тому +2

Glad you finally talked about these because the remake traumatized me when I was younger, and your calm and often humorous demeanor really help. Specifically, the camcorder scene with the ghost standing still in the hallway and the following closeup jumpscare was burned into my brain as a kid when I was stuck at my grandparents’ house and this happened to be on tv while I was all alone, and even though you showed the jump scare 3 times in this video I felt more mentally prepared to visit the scene as an adult and really confront it. It still terrifies me tbh, but I don’t feel as helpless as I did in my youth, rather I’m fascinated with it. It’s like when you finally see the monster for what it is, and you become less afraid of it, especially now that I am older. This video has kinda helped put some of that childhood trauma to rest.

The only thing I remember from this movie is the extreme smash cutting that gave the horror scenes a strobe-lighting effect. I hadn't seen that before and it really stuck out to me. I think they did a much better job of that in Thirteen Ghosts, but didn't really improve the story much.

When I first saw the remake, I thought the switch from "it's all fake" to "it's supposed to be fake, but actually it's real" was very well done. When he turns that chair around and the guy's face is missing, it changed the whole movie for me. If I hadn't seen the original, I don't think it would have had the same impact. I went from mildly interested in seeing how they'd pull it off to downright invested in it. And the special effects weren't that bad. I've seen worse in better movies. The saturation chamber is the scene that disturbed me the most. Imagine being in that thing.

Hi Ryan, hope you have a great year. The 1999 version is one of the first horror movies I can remember watching. It really disturbed me, but I loved the Marilyn Manson + Silent Hill style it had (that now I see it comes from Jacob's Ladder), hell, I still really like this style, unfortunately it got sooo overused that no one can stand it any longer. The goofy Ghostviewer glasses of 13 Ghosts actually played a role in the movie - there is ONE apparition who is visible through either lens, which is a massive clue to what's going on. This is completely lost in newer versions without the ghostviewers (or just regular 3-D glasses, which also work since they have a red and blue lens to peek through by closing one eye).

I love House on Haunted Hill, adore Vincent Price, and love the Noir story hiding under the ghosts! I am most terrified of the Psychiatrist/Psychologist using his expertise trying to drive a young woman mad to hide a crime! When I was little, eight years old and younger, I took my tape recorder everywhere I went. I had a bag of tapes, music, people reading books, and storytellers. My favorite tape was Vincent Price Tells Stories of Ghosts, Ghouls, and Goblins. It might as well have been called Vincent Price's Tales of Terror! It had long stories like The Smoker, and short invocations like To Become a Werewolf, and it was the most creative, vivid, gorgeous acting and storytelling I'd ever heard. I wore that tape OUT! I haven't been able to find a recording of what was on the tape, a few bits and pieces are on records but I'm hoping to find it all one day. When Vincent Price died I was in sixth grade and I bawled my eyes out. Love that man.

Speaking of Vincent Price, have you ever seen The Abominable Dr. Phibes? (Forgive me if I've asked before.) It's got so much going on with the art style and set design, some strange anachronistic elements depending on when you interpret the movie is taking place, and some kills that straight up seem like they inspired Saw. It's perhaps not a great film, but it's definitely strange and it was fun revisiting it recently.

Following your suggestion of recommending remakes; maybe consider the Blob and its remake. I guess it might be a bit campy, but I remember really enjoying the absurd "splatstick" style of the remake. Was not that patient so as to finish the original, but maybe that's where you could make us the abridged version. As always, great video!

I once had a costume fitting at the same time as Geoffrey Rush. He was dancing on a table in his underwear when I walked in. Interesting guy.
I honestly enjoy House on Haunted Hill's remake. I liked the backstory, as you said it's pretty intriguing. Then again, I love Thirteen Ghosts so no surprise I like House on Haunted Hill. Really happy you covered it.

The only thing I remember on the 1999 version is the Beetlejuice head spin when Rush's character is trapped in the isolation room, and it scared the shit out of me.

House on Haunted Hill is more or less a guilty pleasure to me. I know it's not a good movie per se, but Vincent Price's performance is absolutely irresistible. Even if you've seen the movie before and know what happens, something about him just keeps you hooked. If that's not the mark of a Hollywood legend, I don't know what is.

I'm curious to see your evaluation of the 2008 Swedish vampire flick Let the Right One In and its 2010 American adaption Let Me In. It's one of my favorite horror movies of all time and the handful of localized horror remakes that were legitimately good.

Since we touched on Vincent Price here, what do you think of the Masque of the Red Death? I remember having found it to be a fairly dreadful and anxious experience when I saw it when I was young.

I love Hill and the Tingler so much, and the Hill remake has such a charm to it compared to the other remakes of the time.

Yeah people always talk about how bad the cgi is in the remake, unaware that it isn’t cgi. I can’t remember the technique used but it’s basically images of naked women which you cannot unsee once you notice. It was made to resemble a Rorschach painting since it was set in an abandoned asylum. I love how weird it looks. It adds to the creepiness of the asylum. This movie will always have a special place in my heart and it was one of the first movies I watched on a dvd (the other being thir13en ghosts funnily enough).

Cool video Ryan. Never knew 13 ghosts was a remake. And btw the ghosts from the black bible were TRULY horrifying! Also, Geoffrey Rush should play Vincent Price in a movie, his looks were great!

Please do a video on the original and remake of "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark". It was the movie that really scared me as a child. The one that still gives me the chills when I think of the phrase: "We have all the time in the world. All the time in the world."

My favorite flick of all time. I'm 67 years young so I have seen my fair share of flicks. Vincent price absolutely knocks it out of the park! The man is an absolute horror icon along with bela lugosi and long Chaney, jr. May he live thru the silver screen F O R E V E R.

I kinda want to argue that the CGI ghost at the end is not bad at all, and that its minimalist ethereal effects work very well.

Maybe it's because I first watched it when I was 7 or 8 years old, but the imagery in the original house on haunted hill, the old lady especially, was extremely creepy to me. As a kid that shot where the camera pans and she's lit up by the candle was about as scary as the most intense scenes from Hereditary's climax. I saw it the way that that scene would probably be re-shot today

Honestly the idea of the story behind the original House of Haunted Hill sounds really engaging, if a modern movie were to use the idea but build upon it and give it the time it needs to play out, I think it would make for a fun movie.

5:48 while i agree to the pose and face the old woman is making are campy, to this day the way she just glides out of the room still gives me chills. Maybe i've got some phobia from things moving unnaturally like that.
