I think it's worth mentioning that the initial inspiration for the novel was that King lived in near exact circumstances as the family in the book and movie, in which he and his wife and their kids moved to a new house next to a busy road that would regularly claim the lives of the neighborhood pets, including his daughter's pet cat, and the neighborhood children built a "sematary" to bury them in. Later on, his youngest son wandered near the road and was almost hit by a passing truck before tripping over near the edge, giving King time to catch him. The book, like The Shining, became very personal because it was him more-or-less processing what could have happened if circumstances hadn't been as fortunate, which was why it was in storage for a while, not just because of the bleak themes.

@@dylanmonstrum1538 Stephen King was infamous for being a raging alcoholic and drug addict during the 80s (pills, coke, crack, LSD, the whole shebang). IT came out in 1986, so that checks out. He said when writing Cujo, he was tripping out so badly he had no memory of making it.

Fun fact about Cujo: king barely remembers writing it. He admitted he was ridiculously drunk most of the writing process. It was a crazy obstacle to overcome and I am proud of him for getting sober. But if I knew King at the time, I def would've high five'd him while yelling "TUBULAR!"

Zelda seems to be considered the most nightmarish aspect by most who've seen this movie, which is understandable as she's stomach-turning. I did however also find her to be a genuinely pitiful creature who never did anything to deserve such a cruel fate, which was sort of reflected in the miserable downfall of the main characters.

As far as I can remember, Zelda was pictured 'evil' because she wanted her sister Rachel and her family to suffer for no appearent reason. She was described as wetting her bed on purpose just to trouble her family. Rachel also mentions that if changing places would be possible, Zelda would definitely take Rachel's body and leave Rachel suffering throughout the horrible fate Zelda was destined to have.

I think part of what makes the story so horrifying is the ever present adult fear. The thought of losing a child is unbearably tragic enough, and seeing someone deal with the trauma and guilt is enough to make this story disturbing, even without the possessed zombies. I'm also bummed that the 1989 film left out the wendigo, as it adds a nice bit of Lovecraftian lore to the titular Pet Sematary, and excited for the remake because it may actually acknowledge said established backstory and add a bit more lore of it's own. The horror that King presents in his stories tends to hit close to home, or have a basis in reality, due to the terror and grief experienced by the characters, which does help bring things down to earth. A cemetery where dead pets come back to life is straight out of fiction, but the sheer emotion and psychological suffering caused by the death of a child gives it a realistic edge.

Personally, I think PET SEMATARY is King's scariest novel, probably because it's the most cynical and the most tragic. Nobody truly deserves their bad fates in this story; these are basically good people who end up dying because they don't know how to process their grief. People who bring about their own downfall are classic tragic characters, and the story is made even darker by the insinuation that this is a cycle. Since we all experienced loss and grief, this has all happened before, and it will all happen again.

I absolutely love your channel. You’re introspective view of horror thoroughly legitimizes my love for the genre. Finding so many fascinating undertones and philosophical suggestions helps me truly appreciate many of the more deep and sometimes more unconscious ideals in these films. It’s very engaging to have your channel to watch, discus and explore so many great aspects that lay just beneath all the gore. Thank you for all you do. It’s truly a pleasure.

The Wendigo makes only a brief appearance in the book, and then it's only the briefest of glimpses, basically the eyes moving through the trees.
It's very effective, though, right there with the terrible Zelda parts for the dread factor.

Absolutely my all time favourite horror movie, just ahead of Candyman, A Nightmare on Elm Street and the Fly..
As a kid I thought the movie was stupid, Why did he bring back his wife when he knew what was going to happen?
Now as a man and a husband, the story makes so much sense. As he walks with her body, he has to, it's not about reason, it's not about thinking it through. He loves her and he's bringing her back. Best ending of any movie ever.
Also, now that I am a father, watching him take on the reponsibility of killing his own child, and then watching that child die in front of him.
I don't think anyone can understand or imagine what that kind of horror is without being a parent.
Once I drove over our kitten while coming home early from work. In our family, we love our pets like our own children, people say that, but it's no truer than in our house, and I drove over the head of my favourite little kitten in front of my two year old daughter. It splattered and twitched violently around on the driveway with what was left of it's brain. My wife screamed and wailed insanely for 20 minutes when she found it, clutching it to her chest, covered in it's blood as the life ebbed away.
I had come home early to surprise my family. Only two years old, and in an instant I have taught my little girl about the sudden ruthless cold truth of death.

I saw the movie when I was younger and I thought I understood the horror of it, but I didn't really get it until after I had a child and then read the book. I'd almost discourage any parent, especially of a young child, to read this book. It really hurt me mentally because all I could think of was my daughter and what would I do (she's almost 2 now). Unless you have a child, you really can't get the full "horror" of the book

First off, I love your channel! I just discovered it, and really appreciate the time and effort, as well as the immense research you put into your videos!
I have always loved Stephen Kings work, and think that really good horror writers touch on REAL horror(grief, loss, death, illness, mortality). The inability to accept loss and death, and wanting to ‘turn back time’ would be a temptation too strong to say no to. I know in the first 8 months after my brother was killed, I would have brought him back regardless of the consequences.

Great analysis Ryan. I really hope the remake lives up to the prerelease hype. I already made the mistake of watching the all too revealing trailer, and suffice it say, I already know of one crucial change to the original. A change that would’ve been considerably more impactful if I had skipped the trailer, and just waited for the films release. I’ll still go and see it, but I’ll stick to my tradition of shunning trailers for the most part.

I grew up on the original movie and I'll always love it but honestly the remake got to me the most. I couldn't stop crying. The fact that the little girl knew she was dead when the dad was bathing her. Geez. That movie was hard to get through. As someone who has lost more loved ones than anyone my age should have....this story really gets to me. The question of , how strong is your grief. Would you bury a loved one in pet sematary to bring them back, knowing that they will be evil? Are you so grief stricken that you don't care about the consequences. I'd give anything to see my mom and dad again. I can't imagine how a parent would feel after losing a child. It really makes me wonder what I would do when I'm in that dark hole, consumed with grief.

I was watching this movie not even two days ago! it's one of my all time favorites.
to me the truly sad and terrifying thing about the movie is how insane and desperate death can make us. and we'll do insane a desperate things.
even after watching many times it's still hard for me to watch Gages death. because as a mom I'd probably be driven insane with grief as well.
as you can tell by my screen name I'm a nihilist but if someone were to tell me about a way to bring back my baby I most likely would. I have no shame in admitting that.
also, just finished watching the re-animator again and I love how that movie compliments pet sematary. both excellent movies!

I have to say, I love your analysis of horror movies. Getting deeper into the subcontext is really fascinating. I was 4 when the original movie was released and I remember that this and Poltergeist are the only two movies as a child that really horrified me. As I grew into my teens, that fear was replaced with appreciation. That is until I read the damn book in college. No book has ever terrified me as much as Pet Sematary. There is just so much more depth in the book that the movie doesn't do justice, ESPECIALLY where the Wendigo is concerned. Also, Gage is ten times more frightening in the book. In the end, It's Dr. Creed's inability to control his grief that finally send him down the path to bring back his son. However, there is an argument that Gage's death was a price the father had to pay for meddling with the forces of life and death? Either way, there is something horrific about taking something once seen as innocent, the child, and twisting it to something totally inhuman. Sorry for the long comment, but I'm a huge fan of this. Anyway, love the channel and keep up the fantastic work!
