VW T5 Camper Conversion Project Part 18: DIY Bed Build & Installation

  • In this video I show how I build a camper van sofa bed build in a VW T5 camper van. The camper van bed build takes the form of a U shape sofa bed with the bed measuring 200cmx110cm (with extra side space too). The DIY camper van bed frame build was mainly completed in a day with carpeting of the panels & framework taking another day. I then use some old caravan cushions and cut them down the cushions to the size of the camper van bed frame and fully reupholster them myself. Once the DIY campervan bed build is completed it transformed the look of the van and makes it in to a proper camper van. By carrying out my campervan bed install I have saved myself over a thousand pound compared to having it build and upholstered by a company. The camper van bed has ample storage underneath all of the frame and also houses my diesel night heater. All of the panels on the campervan bed build either flip down or up to allow easy access to all of the storage the campervan bed provides. I didn't have any campervan bed plans or designs to go off but rather just worked it all out as I went along and I think it looks lovely.

    Thin plywood, glue and stainless steel staples work great for cushions. Stick foam on ply with spray glue, fold material ( wrap like a parcel ) around foam to back of plywood, glue and staple.
    My mate did his sail boat this way, it was quick and actually looked professionally done. The cushions had Velcro stapled to them ( plywood side ) so they always stayed put. The cushions were removed before racing.
    Anyway good job 👍

      Thanks, not sure on colour yet, probably keep it white for ease but maybe either 2 tone it or get it part wrapped, we'll see soon enough as it's almost that time

    Great video, shows every step of the way. We were going for R&R bed, but have read so much in Forums about extra space etc, we've decided to go for the U Shape lay out with pull out bed. Do you have any knowledge on seat belts in this type of lay out ? Im guessing it wouldnnt be legal

    • @TheCampervanBuilder
      @TheCampervanBuilder  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks, you can't really get sealbelts in this layout easily, belts need to be bolted to the floor in some shape or form and to the side panels securely to be legal and I do not think seatbelts on a sideways seat are legal either. Thats why if people need belts, they usually go the R&R route but as I never carry more than 1 passenger, its never bothered me

    Great job does part of the bed hang over step. I'm building one. My van is all lined. And insulated. But when i run frame down the side with step. It over hangs over the step by around two inches. Its a SWB van.. I'm confused that the van project 77 doesnt hang over the step. Even the cousins flush to wall. Very strange

    • @TheCampervanBuilder
      @TheCampervanBuilder  4 роки тому +1

      Yes this hangs over the step slightly as I made it to make sure I could fit it at the time and being over 6'2 tall, it ended up being 2m in length. I presume the others are only built to 180cm if that

    • @Hitmeup-e7m
      @Hitmeup-e7m 4 роки тому

      @@TheCampervanBuilder cheers yeah it will hang over by around 2 inches. It looks like van project 77 stuff is on a slight angle ie the frame. So maybe thats how they get it so flush to egde of step. Ive no choice then but to have it over step a little. Cheers fella

      I mention in the video I use old caravan cushions from a scrapped caravan and as they are caravan cushions, they are 6" deep rather than 4" as most available foam seems to be. Check used marketplaces for caravan cushions, there are plenty out there
