For those contemplating: I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my AE modular, and I have already used it on a few recordings, as well as giving it a full test in a live performance. Yes..for older eyes, the pin outs are a bit fiddly. However, most every one of the modules have a very simple and fairly standardized methodology. I'm finding myself not being 'bored' with my Starter System 2...I'm finding myself intrigued while still looking for new ways in which to use/abuse its potential. As someone who prefers result to tinkering, the AE Modular has been phenomenal in use for me, and I'm looking forward to getting some new modules to add to the system. Don't count it out on its size, or the build. It's NOT A VOLCA. It is a very cost-effective full instrument that will not only play well with other devices, it can and will cut through a mix and stands up on its own to nearly anything I've used in the modular world with similar parts. I'm so glad that Bo has highlighted this unique device, and hopefully everyone has a great 2020!
I think the small pins have a downside, fiddly, but also upsides, in that it allows for modules to have a lot more in and out ports. Also if you like DIY i guess they are the same size as dupont wires, so they can plug into your arduino etc right?

I almost feel personally attacked at the Volca comment. Just kidding, but sincerely, there are some great Volcas. The Volca Modular itself has 50 patch points, which is quite decent for what it is. I get some amazingly unexpected sounds out of it every time I use it. Each time I think I've heard it all, I patch some playfully random stuff up and I'm surprised yet again. It's good when you accept the fact that the reverb and the sound itself are quite cold and metallic, and the carrier/modulator oscillators are limited. And the Volca FM is basically a way-downsized clone of the Yamaha DX7. Don't count Volcas out either. Have a great 2020 yourself. :)
@@mikeexits I agree. Volcas are an intrinsic part of the "knobby" ecosystem alongside Eurorack, Behringer, Moog, etc.

I carry mine in a backpack, had no problem with airport security, attached it to a cellphone battery and created some patch variation during my flight with headphones and my zoom to record. 🎶👍🏽

@G Nope, not this trip. I tour often with electronics. Sometimes security will ask if I am a DJ. When I tell them I am a composer, it usually shuts the convo down. I guess its not as compelling as being a DJ. My younger brother has an enviable euro rack set up in the confines of his "man cave". I like that I can get out into the world with AE.
I tried this with a Volca Drum and it's like being on a bus. There is too much movement and it's too cramped to really have fun with it. There was so much turbulence on that flight that I was getting nauseated with all of the twisting and turning and looking down at the Volca. I had to look straight ahead to keep from getting sick. I wouldn't recommend this.
I just picture a guy on a plane patching wires on the tray table, cursing & making unsettling beeps while everyone else looks on in horror
I love that they mentioned the mod-ability of these things. I can attest to this, not that I've made anything of note, but that I haven't blown mine up yet tinkering around. In that respect the AEM is fairly bulletproof (Obviously I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to modding electronics 😅).
I have however made a portable case + battery setup that powers both the AEM and my Beatstep Pro. I've used it every night for a week without having to re-charge, very impressed. I'll be doing a video on that soon for anyone interested.

It’s such a fun format for me and I after the standard modules had been released, we are now even getting more unusual ones, like the freshly released Algodrone, Ginkosynthese Grains and Solina String Synth. There’s also a thread on the AE Modular forums in which people can post their module wishes. A bright future indeed! :)

Because I'm already a few thousand dollars into a Eurorack modular project, I'd been thinking that I likely would go for more Eurorack modules rather than invest in the AE Modular format. But then along comes Technobear who shows us how we can interconnect these two systems. So now I'm tempted to test the AE waters. Not right away but perhaps somewhere further down the road.

for those wondering about durability...Ive had mine since May 2017, so 2.5 years
my AE is from the kickstarter, and had the old style patch headers and patch cables.
I supplemented the patch cables with others I got cheaply elsewhere (!) , and a few of these snapped after lots of use but caused no damage - and costs peanuts to replace the patch headers, some are a little loser now, not a problem for sound - but a come loose fall out, if case is vertical.
HOWEVER... the new (metal) patch headers and patch cables are MUCH better (I have a few of each), higher quality and fit snuggly.
much better than you will find on the Bastl , or volca modular - which are similar to the original AE.
this improvement is typical of what Ive seen from Tangible Waves, they have evolved and improved the product, the cases are better and I think almost all the modules featured in the KS have now been improved on...as well as introducing new modules - this is fantastic, since with the low cost of the modules, I happy to buy the new versions.
as mention in the video, I dont really see it as a Eurorack competitor, rather something different that is much cheaper, but still has functionality and quality of sound. bare in mind with eurorack, not only is it the cost of the case and the modules - but go look at how much patch cables cost... you might be surprised !
also.. not mentioned in this video... it small size, also makes it really portable... you can easily run this thing off usb battery pack and take it outside.

Thanks Bo, I especially enjoyed your reflections about modular and the trap of adding and adding modules. The price was certainly something that drew me to AE modular but it was really the use of 0v-5v for both power and signal that got me.
I had been messing with Raspberry Pi and Arduino-type things for sound and for control, and I love making things. So, it made sense to have this nice rack of stuff that works nicely and that I didn't have to re-invent the power supply, inputs and outputs etc. I also have a lot of LittleBits synth and other modules left over from teaching and prototyping. They all run on 5v too, so I can just plug them straight in, with a bit of creative cable-hacking.
When I perform, I know that, even if my shonky home-made modules stop working, I can count on Robert's ones to keep things going - at least I have a wagon to fall off. :) That lets me take risks and use rough prototypes on stage without fear of silence and frantic live-soldering if it doesn't work out as planned.
The thing that surprised me on unboxing was just how tiny and lightweight the system is, and I think this is a big deal for an apartment-dweller like myself (In the video, did you notice Felix's studio, all hidden away in a modified Ikea wardrobe?).
Definitely more fiddly than Eurorack and I can't patch without wearing my reading glasses. They are not rugged and need extra care in lugging them around. The latter is balanced by how light they are to handle.
I agree that the AE format is not for everybody, but if you are thinking to embark on a very DIY-oriented Eurorack modular system, this may offer a slightly less steep and less slippery slope for you. :)

The price is amazing for sure, but I'm still more into using 1/8" jacks for modular.
Just getting into the synth world, and that AE modular reminds me of “N” gauge model railways, versus “HO’ as Eurorack, and the various standalones being like various custom large scale models available...
Considering my modular system cost around $10k, this is a SUPER cheap way to get into it. I think my Eurorack case cost more than this.

Yeah, this is super interesting. I also got the chance to play with it a bit at Superbooth and it sounds huge. The thing that is really attractive is really the nice community built around it, which I have to say, reminds me a lot of the VCV community. And yes, it doesn't have to be this or Eurorack, and it's not here to replace Eurorack. It has its own voice, and it's awesome.

I've started and manage the AE Forum and I was very inspired by the VCV rack community and my vision was to initiate, nurture and help grow something similar for AE. I also had big help in this from Felix and Mark and many others and more and more new amazing people are signing up and becoming active every day. I'm really happy how it turned out.

I've been wondering about 5his system as I recently learned about it. A little concerned about the tiny wires, since my eyes aren't great anymore. But I like the volca modular concept so I also like this in concept too. Gonna have to look into it more. Thanks for the video.
I prefer more west-coast stiled soundshaping. Had Bastl Kastle + Volca Modular for some time now and this combo does miracles!
Kastle works extremely well with AE. Can even be built into a module, and powered from the system.

in this vid the patch points seem to be "turned pin" but in other places I see leaf spring type connectors.. wondering what they currently ship with. I think the turned pins might get loose over time

Glad to finally see the review, and the detailed overlook about various things for it. I originally was contemplating one, but have now decided to instead go with saving up for one of the Erica Synth's systems. I think me and those tiny patch points just wouldn't get along. But am I ever glad that the AE Modular dared to try things out that are different from conventional. Why Erica Synths? It seems to focus on ease of playability, and ticks a lot of the boxes that my old dotcom from Roger Arrick (aka Synthesizers.com) did, but it won't take up a huge amount of space - a 104HP wide case will take up less room than my old 14 MU Winkels-cabs did.
So, you've done AE Modular, arguably one of the smallest modular formats. What's next, dotcom and it's glorious 5U of height? Oh wait, you'd have to get a new overhead rig to be able to fit even a Box11 in the shot.... :P
Why not both? Haha. I 4I/O module for AE is super cheap, easily interfaces with my Eurorack gear
@@BeholdJesse While the idea of both does seem tempting, my biggest issue/worry/concern is that it's smaller size could very well be a disadvantage for me. That and if I buy something, I never intend to sell (I know, odd to have that kind of philosophy but am contemplating Eurorack). A Starter Rack 2 is about $680 CAD shipped, and rapidly becomes $955ish CAD by adding in a few more modules (wavefolder, nyle filter, springreverb, hpamp, and 4io).
Having repetitive strain injury in both wrists is probably another thing that has me wondering how well the rather small knobs on the AE Modular would work out for me - I like the Erica Synths stuff because it's black, has similar knobs (and knob dimensions) as dotcom gear (MU format), but doesn't take up a massive amount of space like the dotcom stuff does. I do miss that 2x14MU setup I had back in the day though, as it was a LOT of fun to patch.
White Wulfe I have a Pico system III and my AE system will be here Wednesday... when there is even a couple of patch cables plugged into the Erica, the small and narrow knobs can be quite hard to reach. I also have strain injuries in both wrists and it honestly has TERRIBLE ergonomics. The sound is amazing though and Erica products are excellent.
What I’m getting at though is that this unit is actually more ergo friendly than the Pico.
Is the concept the same for modular synthesis with the AE Modular versus Eurorack? Do VCA and VCO work the same for example? This looks like a great affordable entry point to modular for those without thousands of dollars for a Eurorack system.
What was the name of the controller you were using?

All you would have to do is solder a resister network to a female dip header.

It makes more sense than the modular from TE. They could have saved a few more cents by using cheaper screws and plastic panels instead of wood.
Bo.. Like your good self and Ricky Tines, I always find myself drawn to your passion of external/modular midi gear. I use my Mac with Ableton and Serum for a lot of my writing. I own a JDXi but because of full time work, husband, dog walker and a brazillion other things I have to do with my life. I can watch a 20 min video of you guys where I should be spending 20 mins playing with the dumb JDXi analog synth. What I'd like to know is if you could do a "crossover" video. You see, I have ideas and I need them down quickly hence my mac. Farting with a filter for an hour really doesnt tickle my ivories. This probably makes me a different kind of musician I guess but I kinda wondered if its possible to combine both ? lol. (including job, wife, dog etc)
And, how about the behringer modular/semi modular range, i think its the best way to start playing around in the modular universe, for the price the neutron its a monster.

king a should be no problem when you use the audio In and Outs (3.5 mm jack sockets) of the master module or the 4I/O module, since they have an overvoltage protection. ✌️
The BIG question is whether you want to self generate sequences or play them to a sequencer like the Pyramid Squarp. OR, maybe you just want to create a synth that can be played from a conventional piano keyboard. Self generation will always be the most expensive route because all the articulation that a musician would make on a keyboard has to be reproduced and programmed from a hardware module(s). So if NOT self generating a small system played with a keyboard, or playing into a sequencer, would be very inexpensive and produce a wide range of sounds. Adding modules would not be really necessary for years then.

I agree it is more of a Volca type instrument. My eyes are too old and my hands are too big and shaky for such a instruments.

Thanks for the review Bo. Looks interesting, but it is a real shame that they only provided it with these small wires. This way you have a hard time to connect it to other modules or a hybrid synth. Otherwise it probably would have been a great deal to start out with modular.
The creator sells a wire to minijack converter as a module. Not a perfect solution, but it works
It's actually quite easy to interconnect this with Eurorack or CV/Gate controllers. There is a special I/O module for that. Mark aka TheTechnoBear is showing this in this video.
@@The5thVolt Yep, I have seen it. But it only provides a couple of connections and it would be so much more elegant to have mini jacks on all of the modules, let alone that you don't require different types of patch cables.

The new patchwire are pertty good compared to the old ones. I have to say that I'm not very carful with them and they hold quiet well.

the patch point get a little loose after heavy use but nothing really falls out. You could probably replace the patch points easily and inexpensively if necessary if need be. The cables are fine. You could probably use arduino jumper cables for cheaper and make the cables as long as you want
Interesting video, although I kept having some nagging questions from the start and new ones kept adding. Before pointing them out, I think it matters whether you, as a viewer, are a seasoned module handler, or are a newbie on the modular hardware front, like me, who is wondering how to enter the field (and seeing this as an option). First, I immediately noticed the set you ordered is not one of the sets AE offers. I had to do some work and found out (= calculated) that your set costs 702 euros (and €835 VAT added in the EU)(that's over 60% more than the €435 set), and since you use the additional sequencer (€74), the sound demos are not indicative for the affordable sets. And this price point approaches for example the Pittsburgh entry set, which doubtlessly offers less sound options (no sequencer anyway, but adding one would not make is a lot more expensive), but is far more sturdy, and 'real' Euro-rack. So this was a little confusing, I had to solve this issue before I could continue watching. Then there were some small issues, like does it come with a power supply and does it have a headphones output (I imagine the real newby starting with just this set at the dinner table)?. I also was surprised, call me dumb, but that puts me in the target market, by the midi input. I only know usb-b and 5-point din-plugs. Do I need new cables to connect my midi-keyboard? Then, you call it 'another system', but I assume the knowledge and experience you gain using this system corresponds 1-on-1 to 'regular' modular? This may all sound very critical, but I just try to put things in perspective. I think this might be a very interesting, but mainly practical way to start with modular synthesis (apart from softsynths, like VCV, but gradually you want the tactile experience, beyond mouse-hoovering). I recognize the inspired, or maybe better impatient, impulsiveness that demands you to buy new hardware (instead of figuring out what exactly it is what you want), making you end up with dozens of modules, guitar pedals, devices, all with their own, indiscernable power supplies and cables, rendering your desk and room into a jungle. This system is before all neat and tidy, andby that it harbours some discipline. And I think working with this will prepare you for the 'real thing', making you better know what you want and need, earning itself back within one or two years. But that of course is my voice of reason, which knows no excitement and impulses. The battle goes on. (Edit: I saw you can buy a matching power supply and a MIDI-cable for about (together) 20 euros on their site).
Oh, and a rather technical question: when you need to amplify the outgoing signal (14:35) for it's too low, won't an incoming signal the other way not be too high ('hot'), maybe causing damage?

I think the AE sounds quite nice and I'd be willing to navigate the tiny cable but it definitely needs a face-lift aesthetically. I hope they add more color to future modules.
I dunno, I kinda dig the "1960's NASA mainframe" vibe it has going on. I can wear my thick black glasses and white short sleeve business shirt and twiddle some knobs.

Interesting! Very interesting! I wonder WHY this is so much cheaper than Europa. It seems to cost maybe 1/3. Yes, the cables are thinner, the connections are smaller, it's not metal plates and so on. However, this doesn't seem to justify the Eurorack prices, which seem 3 times higher (my quick estimate, and I could be wrong). So, is Eurorack simple overpriced? Or what explains this? Thanks! I echo this. I had a couple of questions before purchasing, and I contacted him and despite being in the midst of the coronavirus and with his backlog of orders, he responded quickly, offered good advice . After I bought the system, I went on the forums and he was present over there offering encouragement and great answers.
I can't applaud the guy enough.
Lets say i’m not the biggest fan of those tiny knobs and wires. There are also tons of Eurorack modules that areafordable.
Search for Rebach, Equinox Synth and Ladik , best for quality sound super cheap modules for what they deliver.

If you're on the fence, don't be, it's fantastic. Not only that, but the DIY aspect is exponentially easier than Eurorack, if you're into that sort of thing ;) Fantastic sounds and the possibilities you can get if you invest 600-900 is astonishing. I can't stop messing with mine. For the price of 1-2 Eurorack modules, you get a pretty extensive entire modular system.
For 600-900 I can get a laptop that is much more powerful and flexible. What gives? Drop it to $200 and I'll try to save my recycling money for it.

I really hope that Robert, the creator of this, is doing this as a sort of side hobby and that he is financially well off. I know so so many artists and creative engineers who have a sort of ethic and attitude, that’s basically implying that since art can have no price, an artist cannot expect to earn much from their works, and so they adopt an attitude towards being ‘anti-profiting’ and though they’ll take what they need, they’re careful to not capitalize on anything. I have a respect for this and I am one of these folks, I think. And yet I am starving for more, and finding often that possibly it’s my tendencies towards being passive that has me feeling cheated. I am over the moon about this modular, and for 500$?! It’s definitely worth the investment. But i really wouldn’t go for it if it meant that Robert was going without shoes and riding on the bus, while he himself was wanting more. Business is difficult to do in a way that keeps one afloat, and it must be done that way consistently over time. I really hope this is gonna be around for a long time. THANKS!

Patch bat and knob looks very week and it seems that it is possible to bend patch connection just by turning knobs with some a bit to far fingers...
it doesn't look much, but the whole thing is pretty sturdy. it's been 6 months I have my system and everything hold together pretty well. And my system was a secondhand from the 2018 kickstarter.

Tuesday Night Machines did a one year review and had no issues with patch wire or connector breakage. I’ve had mine for a couple months, I using every day and no issues. This is a spot on review - you want to learn more about synthesis and get some serious experimental thing without breaking the bank this has it going on. Im having a lot of fun and it’s opened up a whole new world to my usual desktop set-up. I can’t afford to take the euro rack route but this more than satisfies. Continual development/new modules being released and personal email replies from Robert re delivery etc. All good .
Build quality and i/o format are big compromises for that modular system IMO. There are great affordable eurorack modules e.g. Chromatic series by Dreadbox, which will give you much better build quality and standard i/o. Also, it would be far better if it had a sound character that's comparable to the more expensive systems, but there is no actual discussion about it. It seems that people mostly buy it for the features/price ratio. In that regard I believe that it's a nice option instead of a vanilla sounding system (e.g. a Doepfer), but I don't think of it as an investment. It will not last long.
