Hey Mike, being an early adopter of QUAD 8 Tracks in 1973, I am always up for any improvment in the wonderful hobby of immersive music so I will be pre-ordering the Animals Atmos along with the an unexpected but greatly welcomed 5.1 and ATMOS box set of BRIDGE OF SIGHS. It's one I never thought I'd see and can't wait to get my HANDS ON this great classic! With all of the great QUAD discs being released lately, I had put my 1975 Marantz QUAD receiver back into service with the use of an older, pre HDMI , SACD player with Analog outputs. It's a player I had shelved after HDMI came to be. It plays everything without a hitch. LOVE LIVING LIFE IN SURROUND!!!
My scarves, marbles and coasters are still in the original packaging. Those came with coasters, right? Unfortunately for Pink Floyd, Burning Shed has sent me more coasters than I ever use.
Since I do not yet have a Dolby Atmos setup, I will remain content with the 2022 Remix version I currently own. That release was available in a local record store, so I did not need to purchase online. Maybe this one will be as well.
Now this is getting ridiculous! How many times do we have to buy 'the latest" versions of these albums? I think Pink Floyd and the record companies are just getting greedy. Higher resolution= less content (no Snowy White solos?). I am a lifelong Floyd fan (over 50 years) but no way am I going to swallow this!!
I saw something in my email the other day about this release of Animals and thought they had reissued it again rather than it having a new Atmos mix so I did not really look into it. Just checked out the price on Amazon UK and it's a bit pricy at £29.99 especially has I got the one that was released in 2022 for around half that price. So I am a bit dubious about getting this one, especially as the 5.1 mix of this album is by far the best job Guthrie has ever done with a surround mix in my opinion. I noted in this review Mike that like myself you are not that keen on Guthrie's mixes. I also did notice a slight error you made by saying that he had never done an Atmos mix before but he did do it with TDSOTM which (unlike yourself) I was extremely disappointed with and felt that it was not as good as the 5.1 mix he did back in 2003. So that might be another reason to give this one a miss.
Thank you again for all your work that you do to bring us great reviews of our favorite surround albums. I do have Atmos and will be looking forward to a review. I do own the 2018 mixes so this would mostly be redundant as you point out, but damn, if they do a really good job with it... the Atmos experience really is surreal. Hopefully they do an amazing mix and it becomes a must have. I agree that more demand for physical media is important to keep those doors open for those of us who'd rather not stream lesser quality files. Excellent video! As one who bought both SACD and BluRay versions of the 2018 mix, of course I wish that BluRay included ATMOS. However, I’m thankful for the upcoming release. I’ll somewhat grudgingly pony up the $25 (US). Can’t miss that Atmos! On a side note I’ve seen a distinct uptick in eBay listings for the 2018 mix…what I really want are ATMOS versions of WYWH and The Wall 😊.
Not going to get it. Not only I don't have an Atmos setup, but also Animals is not my favorite Pink Floyd album. I did however get the DSOTM Blu-ray with Atmos to hear the Atmos mix folded down to 5.1 since it's much more recent than the 2003 mix (unlike the Animals mix that were done close one to the other).
I do have an Atmos setup and not buying this release doesn't make sense after investing time and money in this hobby. If we knew there was an Atmos mix out there and they didn't release it we'd be moaning and now they are releasing it, guess what 😂. I'd prefer "The final cut" or "The wall " at some point like everyone else but "Animals" will do in the meantime and it can sit on the sleeve next to the 5.1 mix.
I'm with you, this is a skip for me. I don't see the value of a second ,,5.1 mix I'll save my money for the rather expensive 50th anniversary of Robin Trower's Bridge of Sighs, that I believe is coming out about the same time.
How likely do you guys out there think the atmos mix downmixed to 5.1 will sound exactly the same as the 2018 5.1? I'm asking because i only have a 5.1 system and already own the 2018 Blu-ray. On the Dark Side Blu-ray the 5.1 is the old 2003 mix and the atmos when downmixed to 5.1 is a whole new mix. So I'm wondering, with the Animals 5.1 being 6 years old (and probably finished even earlier), is this atmos one a whole new mix? Any thoughts?
I'm a little confused over your concerns about Guthrie's atmos mixing abilities. Didn't he do the Dark Side atmos mix which you reviewed very favourably if i recall?
Would get it if I had a bunch of disposable income, sure, but gonna pass on this, I'm pretty sure. Don't have Atmos set up yet, for one thing. It's still the difference between a $2,000 receiver, and one for $70 that's 15 years old but still handles 5.1 and quad perfectly.
I made the jump to an Atmos/Auro-3D AVR when my last one died. Looked for an end-of-model-year deal. Yeah, $2K is probably a good estimate. Not trivial. It can be nice to have some titles stacked up for when you make the jump, but we don't know how good the Atmos is here, yet.
I bought the 2022 release more as a “vote my dollar” for physical media than anything else. (That’s not a dig against the album… it’s just too inextricably tied to a rough period in my life). By that token, it’s hard to vote my dollar for this suspect double dip. As an Apple Music subscriber who is finally adding ceiling speakers this week, I’ll sample it on streaming. If it blows me away then maybe. Yeah, the price point is reasonable… but in essence that’s $50+ for the same album twice in two years. I just bought Who’s Next for $117 (a whopping discount, I know) and even at its MSRP it has so much more value in terms of what it includes. Yes, that’s treating the albums as equals, which is subjective. Point is, I’d never pay $50 for an album without value add… and taking into consideration the timeline, the lack of any bonus material, (the oof new artwork!), I can’t really justify it. That being said, I did the Amazon pre-order in case there’s one of their legendary one hour price drops. I’ve also set a reminder to cancel the order if that doesn’t happen.
I don't have Atmos, just 5.1, but this seems a little much so soon after recent release. At least offer a discount for those that bought the '22 release.
I'm torn with this relaese, Animals is fantastic album and the 5.1 in 22 was a great upgrade, I don't think It needs this if they included live material then I would be tempted, but this I give this some thought and if I find it at a bargin price then I will buy it, I have a good atmos set up and the other Atmos mix coming out is Machine head by Deep Purple, but that comes in at 89 pounds but you do get live stuff, but I don't know if Machine Head needs Atmos, I already have a 5.1 version which is already great.
It does look like it could be a cash grab. It would have been nice to have offered the blueray release with a offer to pre order a atmos mix even if it would be a year away. The wall is one that everyone is waiting on. What would be nice is if they would tell us how it will be avabile. Like box set or stand alone . Record compaines neef to undetstand that we all have a budget. We pick and choose by how bad do we want that itemvia box set or stand alone. If the only way we can get it is in a box set then tell us so we can save ip for it. Thats my thought . I just ordered the atmos version because its pink floyd,they sre the only band thst i will pay those high prices for box sets and of course Rush. Just means that i wont be buying much else.
Don't have an Atmos system. But do have a 5.1 system. Already have 5.1 SACDs of Animals, DSOTM, WYWH, and the 5.1 DVD of Momentary Lapse of Reason. Would rather see The Division Bell 5.1 released as a stand alone. (Not locked in the box.) Or the long awaited 5.1 of The Wall! Probably won't be buying the Atmos version of Animals.
The Division Bell 5.1 was actually offered as a standalone DVD for a short time from the Pink Floyd store, although it’s now out of print and no longer available from the site. The DVD had lossy DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 mixes on it.
In fact, that is the question. We don't know if the extra Dolby Atmos is enough to make it worth spending money on. Over time, we'll probably be able to get it at a lower price, or even have someone give it to us as a gift 😉 I could compare, for instance, Van Morrison "Moondance" (5.1 vs Dolby Atmos). I had my doubts, but once I listen it (Atmos), I can say that on this case, it worth. I have always "hated" record companies that rip us off. Then they spit on us the speech of piracy and that people buy less and less, when in fact it are record companies themselves that push people to do so. Cynicism

They were releasing an artist's new album. We went quickly to buy it and few weeks later they released the special edition with extras. Was it or wasn't it a scam? And they continue with scam strategies against buyers. In this specific case, Pink Floyd's Animals, did they approach it as a blatant scam or did they just organize it very poorly? I'm betting on the first. If we are in the era of streaming, and there are fewer and fewer physical buyers, why are they punishing us? Why are they scamming us? We could also add the scam of super deluxe box sets, which include vinyl, CD, blu-ray and DVD at the same time. Of course all for an exaggerated price. And on rare occasions they offer us all these formats separately. And they usually do, but not Blu-ray, for example. Is it a scam or not that if you really want just the surround BR you have to buy the super deluxe box set? Well that's what I say, that everything is very good, but the scams and the mockery are not. And the few of us who buy always pay for it. Instead of thanking us, they punish us.
After DVD-Audio and SACD, I'm not investing in an another audio format-period. I disassembled my 5.1 home theater for 2-channel stereo for living space reasons. I can only hope the audio on this disc is better than I heard on the compact disc.
This double dipping is a joke. Howard Jones is releasing his back catalogue in 5.1 even though the full Albums had an Atmos mix only selected Atmos tracks are included.
Wait for the 50 Anniversary release of Animals . There will be a brand new atmos mix where you can actually smell the Pigs 🐽😮!!

Too expensive where I normally buy, like nearly 30 dollars more than DSOTM which I did buy.
