    In today’s episode, I’ll be building a brand new Game Boy DMG with a brand new motherboard, audio board and power board thanks to the Super DMG Kit! We can now save old damaged gameboys with this kit! And instead of using a standard DMG CPU, I’ll be using a CPU from a Super DMG. What a time to be alive!
    Where to purchase assembled boards (WARNING: It has been brought to my attention that this kit has an issues with the link port. If you do not plan to use the link port than it will be okay. However, if you do plan to use the link port it can cause damage when connected to another Game Boy. Refer to the pinned comment below for more info): jt-studios.com/product/super-...

    ATTENTION: it has been brought to my attention that the super DMG motherboard has an issue with the link port. The design on the board I used in the video has a couple traces that are incorrect and could cause damage if connected to another Game Boy via a link cable. Since my video was released it has been corrected by kamicane and the updated design has been uploaded to his GitHub. Unfortunately the kits sold by J&T Studios most likely have the issue with the link port. I recommend that you do not purchase the kit unless you do not plan to use the link port. Huge thank you to consolesandcasks for bringing this to my attention 👍 Cheers!

    Just like with the Game Gear, I'm really stoked that people are making new boards for these projects. Fingers crossed that someone out there is working on a motherboard that will integrate the Sega Genesis and 32X into one to make a Sega Neptune. If it hasn't already been done.

    • @MachoNachoProductions

    • @blackishjustin
      @blackishjustin 6 місяців тому +6

      @@Ness_and_Sonic I've definitely seen people do a Frankenstein's monster version of it. But my hope is for some smart and handsome engineer people figure out how to make a board that you can use the chipset from both onto one with a modern power adaptor solution and work it all together. If something like that exists, that'd be sweet. Although I guess you'd also need to make sure it has a connector slot for the Sega CD as well. No idea if any of that's even possible, but these awesome people are doing incredible things all the time.

      The Sega GameGear was such a cool device but not being able to play it without cable made it terrible, well you could but as a young kid I couldn't spend my little money on expensive batteries, and the games I had were trash as well :( I even didn't like Sonic because I never could make it past the third level or so, neither could my sister and a friend, Sonic was trash as well compared to Super Mario.

    Hmm. I do have a Super GB I don’t plan on using. It’s very nice that we have a new motherboard, kinda like how FunnyPlaying made their own GBA motherboards & as well their new FPGA based GBC console (I hope you end up reviewing that!) which is insane to think about. And apparently, GameBox is planning on consolizing the 3DS, NDS, & PSP? It is insane how much love these handhelds have been getting from the modding & retro community as a whole, it’s beautiful.

    Instead of soldering in each pin individually you can just apply a lot of solder to the pins at once (with a lot of flux pre-applied) and just scrape it back and forth (lightly) across all the pins in a sweeping motion

    Hey Tito - just a small warning with this - there is an error in Kamicane's routing of the DMG link port that is present in the board that's available for purchase in your link (as well as Kamicane's main branch v1.8 and earlier, new update today should fix it). This issue will blow fuses if you link it with another game boy.
    Additionally, I would only recommend using a power board that's specifically been recommended by Kamicane without running/seeing full scope analysis of this board - so either an OEM board or Bucket Mouse's DMGC power board. IPS kits don't need the -18v rail, so there really shouldn't be one on the power board unless you're planning on using an original front board and screen.

    • @ConsolesAndCasks
      @ConsolesAndCasks 6 місяців тому +2

      @@MachoNachoProductions unfortunately the only place it's documented is a small note in my Github for my fork that uses a Game Boy Pocket CPU - and in a conversation a few of us had in the Game Boy discord. Someone blew a fuse on their board trying to test it, and then we investigated the issue. I inadvertently fixed it in my MGB rerouted board already, so I made a tweak for my personal Super DMG (and posted gerbers for that)

      Btw. why do we need the 'power board'? or what is is? it converts electricity from 4*1.5V to like 5V?

    • @ConsolesAndCasks
      @ConsolesAndCasks 6 місяців тому

      @@barnahalo6916 Yes - the DMG has 4 circuit boards that are wired together: the front board which has the controls and screen, the audio board which has the headphone jack, the power board which takes battery input and converts it to a steady 5v (and -18v for the original screen) the CPU board which has the CPU and most of the other components. The Super DMG just consists of the Audio and CPU boards, you need either and original or IPS replacement for the front board, and an original or replacement for the power board as well (I'd recommend the power board that is used for Bucket Mouse's DMG Color - which Tito showcased the entire build for around this time last year)

      @@ConsolesAndCasks Thank you for the clarification. Im not really into the original Gameboy, but my friend had a GBC back when we were kids, I loved that one. Last year I've bought a PSP2000, and I think, that this handheld console is the best in every aspect. I want a PSP go now, because the Bluetooth, so I can use my Galaxy Buds to play. 😁 Retro gaming is quite a rabbit hole. I still have my old Pentium 3-4 Computers, sadly the older ones from my childhood were thrown away, and got lost. :(

    honestly while hats off to the guys that made a modern repo PCB for the DMG, its been done many times before, and to use the superDMG cpu one would expect some of the added features of that CPU be be in use, like the expanded snes color pallet. but again defs hats of the the devs for doing the work on the pcb. most of the older repo boards unfortunately havent been release as open source. mine certainly wasnt lol

    I want to have stereo modded all of my handhelds. This DMG as well. 2 speakers. perhaps even let the speakers blast out from either sides to get better stereo separation!
    Can you imagine Castlevania II ost blasting in stereo from a DMG or even a gameboy Color
    And how about a DMG with the absolute biggest screen possible, stereo speakers. And GBC internals (or GBA internals) and a color screen, biggest possible.
    A pimped out DMG
    Basically, all handhelds should get way bigger screens and stereo speakers
    After that is done, we can have option for sound sepration and even a little sound effects processing unit to give a little bit of reverb, to make it sound a little bit nicer/richer! While not really changing the sound. Just sounds sweeter!
    So much modding work to do in the future. It will never end!

    I feel like the obvious con is that you still need an original CPU. This project will reach its true potential when we can make 100% accurate aftermarket GB CPUs as well. I don't say this to undermine the incredible work done here btw just making a note.

    Have you seen the VIS_Game_Boy_DMG? I'm debating between this mod and the VIS. The VIS has a lot of mods integrated such as a li-ion charger, leds and clicky buttons. For me it would make more sense to also include upgrades when making a new board. But on the other hand the Super DMG is simpler to make and stays true to the original DMG.
