I have a couple of bicycle style thrones. A large number of masters I look up to say that having throne that sits underneath your thighs and supports your hamstrings is important for proper bass pedal technique.
By using a bicycle seat forces all your weight forward where you have to put your feet on the ground or pedals prevent yourself from falling forward.
(At least with my bicycle seats if I lift both my feet off the ground I will immediately fall forward off the seat)
From what I was taught, the back of your thigh should be supported by the seat and your feet should be able to freely dangle. I noticed a huge difference in the amount of effort it takes to play double and triple strokes with a foot when I'm able to balance easily on a regular rectangle or round throne.
But most of the smaller tractor or bicycle style seats I always find myself falling forward especially when leaning into a fill.
Thomas Lang covered this at length a couple weekends ago on his drum channel live video.
One thing that proved the difference to me was flipping my bicycle seat around backwards and how much easier it was to balance and have the ability to lift both legs off the ground without falling forward.
I appreciate you taking the time and sharing your perspective! 🤘

I'm a beginner drummer. I'm having a blast yet sometimes I feel very overwhelmed. I suppose that normal tho. I knew drums would be hard but I underestimated how hard. I've been practicing for a couple months now. I'm currently trying to get a kick drum hit in on the off beat (if that makes sense). Radiohead-Creep for example. I've only been practicing that for a couple hours and I'm getting close. Is this actually something that takes a long time to get your body to do or do I just suck? I subbed also 👍

Stay strong my friend. Do all your practice at this point slowly at first. Only speed up tempos when the slow pace feels good. As you improve the feel then speed up the tempo. Don’t jump around tempo wise because it makes for sloppy playing. Slow and easy is the best way and don’t give up!! Thanks for your comment 😎🥁

My round SONOR, solid as anything, but ouch! I like your Gilbralter style bud!

I’m not familiar with the Sonor stool. But yeah you can go wrong with the Gibraltar

@@drumteacher43 The Sonor will outlive you grandchildren! It's made so well, but if you have to play a 2 hour set ya might as well say goodbye to your butt blood! It's hard on the tush.

Lol true. Actually if I’m not mistaken the first time I actually saw a drum stool with a backrest was at Mohawk in your drum room!!

The pneumatic lifts are expensive and pointless garbage. They all wobble both ends of the pneumatic spindle, and almost all of them have a slow drop in them, meaning you sink while playing. Avoid them at all costs. The threaded spindles are almost as bad from a wobble POV. You only need constant seat height adjustment if many people use the same kit, like in an educational setting. Get a manual adjustment throne w memory lock, it always is the right height . As far as seats, all the saddle & bike seats seem pointless, but I am a skinny old dude and can see where maybe a big guy might want that type seat. Mapex T670 is perfect for me, 4x14 round throne, height up to 27" and under $100. And stable AH.

I'm a beginner drummer. I gald I read this. At some point I'll probably be looking to pick up a better throne. Mines a very budget throne. Sure, it works but it's not very comfortable. All I need is a little more padding.
