oh boy gary you've gone and done it. You've managed to make everyone angry lol. All jokes aside - having the analogue pocket is great however it does get cramped over time and the added cores don't feel right on the small screen and button layout. Steam Deck - eh, i have a PC for that and I barely play my Switch in handheld mode. The only thing I will disagree is the rom issue - while I will try to snag physical copies for my collection and for play, it's not my responsibility to support businesses who rely on a volatile market of finite stock of aging hardware and software. Especially as their prices fluctuate along with the market. When prices are reasonable like $20-50 for a used retro game, cool. But $200- $1000? I need to feed my family too and while I won't go out and download roms on principle, it's unreasonable to ask people to continue to pay these absurd prices because some retro business didn't diversify their income to not be reliant on a market that could go belly up tomorrow especially as more and more people see these eye catching prices and demand more than what retro businesses are paying to procure the items.
@@Xanduur I would prefer to purchace from a private seller vs eBay or online store, and it if is worth $300 I'd buy it. Otherwise no, I won't download something I don't own to play, that's theft of copywritten materials IMO.
I mean I understand your points and the title is named appropriately because, it is indeed why you won’t buy these products. However so much of this just seems like you are stuck in your ways and don’t want to change or evolve.
That, and there is no need to ridiculise people in the way he is "Asking the questions" like the ones that ask are retards. I can't give any fucks about what this guy does or not, or what he thinks about the steam deck. In my case, I also own the original consoles and i love them and also like original hardware, but that doesn't prevent me to love my Steam Deck as well. Playing any retro console in a Plane for example is something you can't do with any original consoles (unless you heavily mod them and make them portable yeah) "This video should have been an email" saying he just doesn't like it or doesn't interest him and thats it. Not all this unnecessary talking.
Exactly, one of his points is that he's invested into the switch ecosystem and not steams, the switch doesn't have an ecosystem, once the new system comes out the games don't carry over
@@RoXolid if you get a chance I would recommend holding a steam deck. I get cramps with the switch or vita myself but the deck is very comfortable and made for bigger hands. Also as far as physical vs digital, you can backup your games with steam.
@@provis83 I actually did just this morning, one of my coworkers has one. It was bigger and heavier than I expected. It's ok, but I can't see myself playing games on it. I don't have time to play on a TV that often, and with those systems I already have with over 1000 games I can't get to, I don't need to be adding to the backlog more. So just 3 games I have had for some time I really wanted at launch and they're still in the shrinkwrap: Zelda: Link's Awakening Kirby and the Forgotten Land Metroid Dread
Legal digital sucks. There's been several instances of stores and games shutting down entirely. I'd rather pirate digital to be honest so it can never be taken from me.
I have a super nt, and I realize I prefer SNES to a CRT or an upscaler so I get ya, the further I get removed from the original experience, the less cool it is for me. The steam deck is amazing for emulation, it's very powerful for a handheld and way more comfortable than a switch. Systems die, especially CD based ones, even the CDs themselves, so emulation isn't all bad. I prefer original hardware, but it's nice having my collection on the go too.
I do prefer to dump my games cause aside from your points you made sometimes you don't know what else might be attached to the download on random websites that roms are on too, but I would love to have a full physical media option instead of just getting discs that are pretty much a download unlock feature I think they should give us that option! At the very least!
I’ve recently gone all in digital/physical. I love owning games physically for collecting but I want to ensure keeping disc clean and undamaged so I own them digitally to play conveniently without getting up.
GBxCart makes the best gameboy dumpers. All 3DS' have the ability to dump carts if you hack them first. The DS lite and OG DS can be used to dump GBA carts with the use on an R4.
Honestly you are missing out not playing any PC games. There are so many great indie titles that are only available on the pc platform as well as all the fantastic mods that allow you to customize and extend your enjoyment of most games, these are experiences that can only be had on pc. The non-archival nature of digital titles is not a huge concern since you can always download the game files onto your computer or digital storage, and If you don't like using one pc for games and work just get another pc for games, assuming you have the money to do so. Gotta disagree on the piracy aspect too. For your point to be accurate you would need to prove that digital piracy for these retro games causes people to not purchase physical copies. I could just as easily argue that it does the opposite because people who play roms will be more likely to want to start collecting physical copies, and due to the wide reach and ease of access to these roms it means that there is a bigger market for people to start collecting the physical copies of those games. Both perspectives without evidence are just a guess really, but even with the prevalence of pirated roms the market for physical carts has still been going strong which seems to suggest that pirated digital copies of games don't cannibalize the physical game market. Even if it did though i would still prefer more people play and appreciate retro games even if that means hurting the bottom lines of the people selling physical copies, and that is an opinion i can definitely see people disagreeing with. And in terms of the legality/morality of it i really don't care at all, Nintendo can hold that L for never releasing their retro game library on their modern platforms :)
Great points. Having physical copies is so important. Example I bought the whole series of scrubs. Watched it way to much as a noise filler. On prime they take out the scene where jd dreams that Barbie is in blackface as female Turk. It kinda made me angry it was a funny joke and they whiped it because some where offended. Went back to my dvd and there it was. If we don’t have physical copies who’s to say they don’t wipe GTA or Mario brothers because someone is now offended. As a kid I read books that are not allowed in school. Imagine a world where we are so afraid of words that we have to keep them out of schools. Anyway rant over great video and that alien game was a ripoff🤣 no chest busters no ripley. Jk
When you bought the Switch, you had zero games for it, and you still bought it and bought games for it. So I'm sorry, it's fine if you don't want to buy the system but "not being invested" is a nonsense reason You also don't have to worry about losing digital games on PC, it's not a closed system like a console. You have full access to and over your game files, so it's trivial to copy them to another medium such as a disk or external hard drive. And just like that, your digital game is now physical. You can even use Steam Emulators to preserve the online multiplayer for these games, albeit in LAN, but you can play LAN online using Hamachi or ZeroTier.
I was invested in Nintendo's infrastructure with the Wii and Wii U, they also have first party IPs I am interested and invested in. So there's a difference there. You have full access as long as the storefronts stay live. I don't play online multiplayer so that's a non-issue for me.
@@RoXolid There's no difference. The Switch was a completely different system from the Wii and Wii U, it may as well not have been made by Nintendo. Nothing was compatible. Not a single purchase crossed over and the controllers weren't compatible either, so you started at precisely zero investment. No, you have full access beyond the storefronts staying live. Offline mode exists, and like I said, Steam emulators are thing, too. When the game is DRM-free, it will even run without Steam or a Steam emulator being installed at all. Notably there are digital PC game stores that guarantee every single game to be DRM-free, like GOG and itch. Frankly, you'd almost have to be more worried that your cartridges and disks will die from deterioration, than losing your digital games. Even if you did zero preparation, I'm pretty sure if Steam died tomorrow then 99% of games on that platform can already just be downloaded from -ahem- other places on the internet.
@@Thornskade Sure there's a difference. First Party Nintendo IPs have me invested in their product catalog. If there's a new Mario, Zelda, Kirby, etc, I'll likely purchase it based on past experiences with those franchises. Same with Sony, I love the Ratchet and Clank games and those are day-1 purchases for me. On the flip side, I had not invested in Xbox at all, so when the new version of Halo, Forza, or Gears comes out it literally means nothing to me. I'll also admit that when I bought my first Switch I did so anticipating that the formula that Nintendo had followed with the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U with their virtual consoles would be carried over to the Switch. Nintendo didn't follow through on that, which is especially surprising when you look at how Microsoft has managed their store and, at least from the PS4 to PS5, Sony has handled theirs. Whether it would happen to Steam or not I have had games through other services removed or not re-downloadable. The perfect example would be something like Ducktales Remastered for the PS3 that got taken down, and then the Simpsons Arcade, also on the PS3 (I didn't have a 360 so I don't know if they were on there too and taken down). So whether or not that would happen with Steam has made me legit gunshy to A) pay for digital content and B) invest in other online stores. I still purchase physical Blu-Rays and back those up to my Plex server for that same reason. Beyond all of this, I just don't enjoy playing in handheld for the most part. So even if I were to dip my toes into Steam I would do so on my Gaming Laptop and connect it to my 75" TV, not play on a Steam Deck. It's a really beautiful and powerful piece of hardware, I'm just not in the demographic to use it.
@@RoXolid That's not an investment, you're interested in one or several titles available on the platform, that's not the point of discussion or what you said in the video. No games have ever had the ability to download removed on Steam in 19 years, and it doesn't really matter because I already noted that you can back up your digital games on PC and even play them later independent of the original service, unlike on consoles. Like you say, you purchase Blu-Rays and back them up digitally, and in that same spirit you can take your digital games from Steam and back them up on a physical disk or server. It's funny, I'm sure you realize actually backing up your console cartridges/disks to make them digital and play them on the original system later on is kinda difficult, so there's the risk of deterioration that you simply don't have with digital PC games As I said, I'm not trying to convince you that you need a Steam Deck, I'm merely addressing these two points since they didn't make a lot of sense.
An emotional investment is still an investment. If I still have to play the games through a pc, or a steam deck, I don't care if I can back them up, although it's good that you can. I don't want to play through that particular type of hardware. I don't want to play on handhelds.
5:45 thank you...I was watching a stream last night and people in the chat were harrassing the streamer bragging how they emulate Nintendo Switch and share downloads with their buddies and acting like they were so cool (they weren't) and kept bringing up a game that didn't even exist bugging the poor man constantly trolling him nonstop for over 2 hours...I used to be indifferent to emulation of old games but now I'm completely against it...there's NO reason to pirate NES and Super Nintendo games when NSO is $20 for a full freaking year and has easily 100+ NES and Super Nintendo games, all in beautiful 1080p, and work flawlessly...there's not any reason to pirate anything and if people want specific games they should asking for official re-releases on Nintendo Switch, not being a pirate.
Question for you about castlemania games. I've been a customer of there's for a little bit but I've never seen or gotten "castlecash" is there something I need to sign up for that with?
I am absolutely in love with my Steam Deck. I can totally respect someone not getting a device like that, but if someone has even a remote interest in a product like that, it is one I recommend to the highest caliber. I actually do most of my gaming on Pc using the Steam deck, right now I’m playing Final Fantasy VIII Remaster, Full Quiet which just came out and is awesome, and also play brand new games on it. I haven’t even delved into the multitude of possibilities like installing windows or emulators or etc, the most I’ve done in that regard is setting up Heroic Games Launcher so I can install GOG and Epic Game Store games on there. I plan on upgrading to 2tb SSD and setting up a dual boot with windows. I also agree with switch in handheld not being the most comfortable, I don’t have that problem with the Steam deck at all. Also digital games on pc are way cheaper than other platforms and unless it’s via gamepass no worries about stuff disappearing when the rights end for them. I really stocked up during the recent summer sale as well as via humble bundle and fanatical, got dozens of games for about $100.
I finally got an upscaler that works on all my retro consoles and it's amazing playing all my retro consoles especially the Nintendo 64 on my big screen TV
Have you seen some of the mods NR 2003 guys make?! I personally don't play the game have no way to play it but people have made alternate universes out of that game! It's insane the tracks and cars the community makes for it!
I never bought a game on steam before I had my deck. Now all of my consoles are collecting dust. The deck is the only device I play now. Think about it, it’s basically a portable ps4 that can also play all the Xbox titles. And most of these games are heavily discounted after a while. I have 30 AAA titles on my deck, spent less than 200 for them.
I'm thinking of getting a Steam Deck and dock for my birthday in April if I don't spend too much money between now and then. We'll see . . . I've got a ton of games on Epic that they give out for free, and I saw a demo on how to install Epic's launcher on the deck, so I've got an instant library. I've also been thinking of getting a Sinden light gun at some point, so I could probably buy some games that are compatible with that, and run it on my TV.
I see where it comes to roms. I myself don't see anything wrong downloading roms as long as you own the game or had the game at one point of your life. Collecting retro games now is extremely expensive compared to 10-20 years ago. Games are overpriced and that's why people just get roms to play the games.
@@RoXolid they only pay because everyone else does. It's a lose lose situation. You have people asking ebay prices even at yard sales. Can't tell me a game like panzer dragoon saga is really worth over 1k can ya?! The Japanese version is only 40 complete. There's no real short supply on any game really.
I respect this video. I bought a steam deck many months ago and sold it last week. Neat piece of tech for sure, however I just wasn’t playing it after 2 weeks and it was essentially sitting there collecting dust. I love video games. However I found I just didn’t enjoy gaming in bed or sitting away from my gaming pc lol Anyways, I hope the new owner is getting far better use out of it than I did :)
I appreciate that. It's interesting, even though I go out of my way to say what a neat piece of tech it is, Uber fans of the steam deck have come from everywhere to attack me for not loving it. I love it conceptually, I'm just not the target audience for it. I also find it interesting that I also mentioned two other devices that I did not intend to purchase, and those fans have not attacked me once.
@@RoXolid sorry to hear you are getting all that abuse, that’s not right at all! You’ve got a great collection by the way. Nothing better for me than sitting at my couch and playing N64 and SNES though, brings me back to when I was a kid :)
I personally like the original Gameboy Advance with an ips screen and my consolized GBA. I have been using the Epilogue GB Operator more though. I just picked up Deja Vu I&II and D-Fuzed should show up sometime this month I hope.
1:33 Then how is the Steam Deck not a console? It is a device dedicated to playing Steam Games in a console like interface. That you are not invested in Steam games does not change this, the fact that it has a Desktop Mode that lets you use it as a PC or hack with the underlying OS is nothing but a feature add, similar to X-Box's developer mode. The Gaming Laptop being a work machine makes sense, but seeing the Deck as the same is simply incorrect as the gaming laptop is a gaming device because of the added GPU performance in a design meant for office work, while the Deck is solely designed for playing games. 3:38 The Steam Deck has built in grips and great ergonomics. It is way closer to a Pro controller than holding a Switch, your comparison of the two is a bad one. The Deck does have different ergonomics than a controller, because it is optimised for the wider form factor and extra inputs and this is for the better. Owning a selection of controllers praised for their ergonomics, on my PC I use my Steam Deck as a controller as the hassle of Steam Link is worth it for the Decks amazing feel. 4:04 One difference of Nintendo's online stores and Steam, is that the latter both lasts a lot longer, has committed to keeping their content available if they ever close and has a built-in feature for burning DVDs from the games you own on the platform. These backups, whether made yourself or with the built-in tools, can work without Steam in the case of games without built-in DRM, games that include this are hated by the Steam community for this very reason. 5:44 Where I live, the law disagrees, here if a piece of media is not made available anymore for a fair price to the consumer, it is legal to pirate it. The second hand store argument only holds true for games that are still common enough to be found there. The discs and cartridges do degrade and break over time, when this happens, what will be left without piracy? And many more obscure games have communities around them, with fansites that need people playing the game to keep the lights on, as otherwise these wonderful pieces of gaming history just disappear. As to making local backups, Steam has this feature, there are a number of games that I care about and will make backup DVDs for, because I own them and want to keep them. These are interesting topics to discuss, but please refrain from strawmanning other viewpoints, like you did with piracy. Finally, I am invested in PC games, mainly on Steam, because of the control the platform gives me over the games I download (I choose to avoid games with DRM). Unlike (not hacked) consoles, if the stores, physical or digital, close, it does not lock you out of playing the things you chose to backup. It also allows you to play in your own way, using software like Steam Input to remap how games work, with greater flexibility than what consoles let you do. Personally I don't like most Nintendo games but prefer PC indies. A preference you don't share but which makes the Deck worthwhile for me but the Switch a waste of money.
Another thing that makes Steam Deck interesting, is that with it, Valve is taking Nintendo's torch in pushing unusual hardware forward. Thanks to this it can emulate any of Nintendo's consoles with their unusual input, which if the real hardware fails can be an amazing backup for playing backed up or archived games. It is not for you but devices like this are the ticked for preserving this media, especially when Nintendo Online for the Switch disappears. This also applies to old PC games, which the Deck was designed to play, along with current ones.
@@RoXolid emulation is legal, even in the US. You may think otherwise, which is wrong, but you do you. Nintendo's statements differ from the law because they bring it in the context of piracy alone. Distributing the games is not because of copyright laws, downloading is grey area, veering towards legal where I live in the case of otherwise unobtainable games. But we'd have to move to properly discussing and citing sources for this to become a productive discussion, which UA-cam's comment filters make impossible.
@@WyvernDotRed I wasn't saying that emulation in and of itself was illegal, sorry if it came across that way. What I meant to say was that Downloading games from the internet was not legal. I'm a proponent of backing up your own physical library, I've done that myself with my Wii collection.
Great video even though I love my steam deck and love these devices I can definitely see your side! Glad you are "sticking to your guns" and not trying to pretend to like things for views. I really respect that.
Sounds like you need to give the steam deck a chance to fully understand why it's good. I'm someone that buys every gaming product that comes out, I even try to buy each special edition. I have around 100 Nintendo 3DS's, 20 Nintendo Switches, more Gameboys, Vita, DS's, DSIs, PSPs and so on than I can count. I have every home console ever released along with a bunch of arcade1up stuff I don't really care for. Multiple gaming computers even though I haven't really been playing much PC stuff for years because I don't really have the time or willpower to sit in front of a PC for hours on end anymore. I actually got to the point in life where I was no longer a gamer, I bought stuff just for collecting but never really played anything apart from maybe one time play throughs of major releases like BoTW or Gran Turismo and such. I bought a Steam Deck to sit on a shelf and add to my collection with no intention of even opening it, but one night I had some time and was bored so decided to open it to see what all the hype was about....and opening that box was the best gaming decision I've made in the past 20 years. The thing is amazing and I find myself being able to play more games than ever without it feeling like a waste of time. It's like whenever I'd normally have a 5-10 minutes of downtime I'm able to pick up the steam deck and instantly start enjoying a game without having to wait on loading times and such. It's amazing to go from nothing to playing a great game in 2 seconds since sleep mode instantly starts up wherever you left off. It feels seamless unlike the switch and other consoles. I honestly cannot properly describe what it feels like, you just have to experience it. Also the best part about it is the freedom when it comes to games, It's not a negative like you mentioned in the video, it's a positive because you can play all the games you mentioned that you already own on the steam deck. I have thousands of games on mine.....and only about 5 of them are steam game. You can play your switch games, your xbox gamer pass and just about every other game you want to play on it. I've had xbox gamepass for about 10 years and never ended a game until I started playing them on the steam deck. I've ended about 3 in the last two months, I've also completed play throughs of every 3d Zelda game starting from OOT and ending with BoTW as well as the first 3 Gran Turismo games. And like I said, because it's so convenient to pick up without thinking when I have a few minutes of downtime It doesn't make gaming feel like a chore anymore. Also it's the most comfortable product you'll ever hold so there's no hand fatigue like you get from a switch, 3DS or PSP/Vita. One last thing to mention is older generation games look amazing when upscaled on the steam deck screen. I play playstation 1 games upscaled to 1080p and they almost feel like modern games because they look so nice. Also playing switch and other Nintendo/playstation games is 100% legal as long as you own a copy of the original game, so you can still support the retro gaming community by buying the physical copies to be able to legally play them on the steam deck. Also if you travel it's a game changer, I travel a lot for work and the steam deck with a nice set of wireless noise canceling headphones and you quickly forget you're on a plane. It's a night and day difference from using a 3DS or Switch to game with while on a plane. In conclusion I would say if you're an actual gamer that's drifted away from gaming due to life, but you miss the experience of gaming then the steam deck is a must buy. It will probably replace every other product you own like it did for me. On the other hand if you're in it more for the collecting side of things and don't really care about playing the games then it's not worth it. I thought my gaming days were done so I fell into the collecting side of things for years, but the steam deck has renewed my gaming side without having gaming feel like an investment that uses up much of my already limited free time. I didn't expect as an adult I'd ever write a page in defense of a gaming system, but here we are.
I can't legally play all the games I want on a SteamDeck. Without downloading ROMs from the internet how can I play any Nintendo IP? If I could dump the ROM from the cartridge, like you can with retro games, then maybe, but I don't downlod ROMs. I've also now held a Steam Deck, I don't think it's any more comfortable than a Switch, and I dare say it's heavier. I don't like the stick placements, and the buttons are not great IMO, but to each their own. I love the Playstation controllers, hate the Xbox ones, but there are plenty who are the reverse of me. That's why it's great to have choices. I don't travel like I used to, so for me portability doesn't matter any longer. For example, my wife and I are taking a weekend getaway this spring, the Switch is not coming with us. For a 2 hour flight I can talk with my wife or we can watch something on one of our phones. And even if I did bring a Switch I'd grab 1-3 games to play, plus what's on the system already. I don't need to travel with my whole collection. I'm glad you have found value and enjoyment in the Steam Deck, clearly you're their target user. I'm not. And that's ok
@@RoXolid You can dump your own cartridges and create your own roms for any Nintendo system legally. For the switch you would need one of the early pre-patched systems which is fairly common and is something any real gamer/collector should have since I assume we all bought our first switches on release, but even if you don't have one you can purchase a used unpatched system for less than the price of a new one. I don't think holding the product is enough to get a true sense of what I spoke about, I held the steam deck multiple times before I started using mine and it didn't feel like anything special, I also hated how the stick placements were not staggered. But you have to experience actually using it and then you'll understand how seamlessly it all works together. From the trackpads to the shoulder/menu buttons/stick placements, you have to really use it to understand but It all feels like an extension of your body once you get used to it. The first thing I did when I started using my steam deck was getting BoTW up and running since it's my current favorite game. After playing it on the steam deck it's basically unplayable on my switch even with the pro controller. And the same is true for every other game I've played on the switch. It's a million times better experience than playing them on their original systems. It's kinda like with cars, they're all basically the same. Four wheels and a steering wheel right? but even so driving a Porsche 911 is a way different experience than driving a Honda Accord. The Porsche feels like an extension of your body while the Honda feels like something designed to get you from point A to point B. That's how the steam deck is when compared to basically anything else. If it's not for you that's fine, but it seems pretty silly to come to that conclusion without actually giving it a real try.
1) great hoodie 2) Analogue pocket form factor kills it for me too. Would love to see something similar to a GBA 3) I agree with your take on roms, piracy and local game stores support. I do have a Mister Fpga and play roms, but I only download the ones i already own physically or digitally (i used to dump roms from my catridges but it was very time consuming). Mister fpga looks better than my original consoles and is way more convinient (less cables, size, portable, wireless controllers support, hdmi. Etc etc), that is why i don't use my retro consoles anymore. I do play some roms that i don't own that are homebrews or impossible to get games like some neo geo stuff or arcade games that are out of circulation. 4) sup gary? How are you? How is your family and new cat? 5) still the best youtube channel
Hey Rox totally agree with u I love the mini & vintage consoles and games that r all on the disc I miss my 90s collection except my turbo and pc engine collection which was always $ especially here in OZ
Great video and explanation. I really like the idea of the Steam Deck and kudos to the developers for creating it. However, I'm content with all of my retro consoles and, combined with my Switch, PS4, and XSX, I just don't see the need to invest in another dock-able handheld platform. Also, I definitely agree with you on the need to maintain physical media in our digital world.
The whole "support the developers" argument in the retro gaming scene is so dumb, and I'm glad you loosely touched on it. It seems to plague a lot of the retro gaming channels on UA-cam for years. I cringed every time anyone threw that defense out there. That said, what are your thoughts on repro? Should owning a reproduction cart justify downloading the same rom or even dumbing your own repro? The devs are not getting a dime from it, and it also kept the lights on for resellers.
Wow, you managed to make absolutely zero good or arguable points as to why to not own a steam deck. impressive how long someone can ramble and make absolutely zero point.
Since you didn't keep up, here's the TL:DW version for you A) not invested in any of the libraries B) I don't play in handheld C) I have other ways to play which makes this am unnecessary expenditure Thanks for watching
The only thing I'm confused about is your comment about enjoying to use a pro controller by attaching it to the switch, and that is why you won't like the steam deck. But that confuses me because the steam deck has full fledged sticks and buttons like on an Xbox controller or something. So it makes no sense why attaching a controller to it would make hand held gaming more comfortable than on the steam deck itself. The buttons aren't small like on the switch joycons. Other than that I respect your opinions in most of the video. Regarding finding retro game shops, that's going to vary drastically depending on the area or country. Here in my country there was only one time I random retro booth in some convention, not sure if there are legit stores by private businesses doing it here.
So take a look at the Fixture Gaming S1 and S2, it's a differnet way to play in handheld. You don't hold the system like a Switch Lite or Steam Deck, it's more like those who have phone clips and play with it attached to their controllers. I've held the Steam Deck now, and I do think the buttons are larger than the Switch Joy-Cons but I still think they're to small for my taste. But even using those, I don't play in handheld more than a handfull of times here and there. It's always docked, so for me to play on a Television I have the PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series S, along with all of my other older systems.
I buy current games, no questions asked. But, when the game is 20 to 30 years old, and I have purchased it more than once in the past, I will now download a copy of it to play, if I no longer own it…. especially if the game is no longer made and/or it’s incredibly expensive on the third party market
7:05 "Rationalization is the second strongest human drive". I think we all agree on that. It seems you needed this video to justify to yourself that those excellent consoles that everyone loves are not worth reviewing :)
So here's what's funny, and I am not picking on you here but you're going to get the response. Everyone seems to miss the part where I praise the innovation and concepts of these devices. I say they are damn fine pieces of technology. But for me to spend the money on them would be a waste for me as I know how and what I like to play. If I am going to play Docked to a TV wouldn't a gaming PC with HDMI out be a better, and more versatile choice? I have Game Boys, GBAs, GBA SPs, Game Gears, Nomads, PSPs, DSes, DSis, 3DSes, New 3DSes, Switches, Switch Lites, and I don't really play any of them. I'm not a handheld gamer, but that doesn't mean I am critical of those who are. I'm at a point in life where my vision is getting worse, my hands hurt more, and I just don't enjoy gaming on small screens anymore. I want my 75" 4K TV to game on. That's just how I prefer to play Also, as someone who isn't into that market, I'm not a PC Gamer or PC Master Race follower, I don't feel my voice is needed on those topics when there are other, more authorative voices on the subject. These are all terrific pieces of hardware and tech, I'm just not the target audience for them. I'd argue I'm barely in the target audience for the Switch OLED since I so rarely use it in handheld mode. Well, this channel is based on Nintendo content and Nintendo Related Products. So even though I still don't use most of what the OLED brings to the table over the original I could justify that purchase as a tool to generate future content for the channel. I know when I've branched out to Xbox and PlayStation content, especially new consoles, no-one watches. So conversely, while I know PS5 content doesn't perform well on the channel, I wanted one for myself as there were IPs on it I wanted to play. There just aren't enough IPs through Steam that I want to play, I can play most on other existing platforms, and I don't need to do it portably. Again, not calling you out, but those are a few things I just wanted to address.
@@RoXolid Totally understandable. Everyone can buy whatever they want. I think the problem is UA-cam's algorithm, which is listing your video (in my case) as the first one when searching "steam deck versus analogue pocket", when the video is not about that and I am afraid very few people are interested in each of our personal preferences in gaming. Anyway, thanks for the explanation. I will probably buy a Steam Deck or an Analogue Pocket, but I won't release a video explaining why :)
@@pavlvs_maximvs I am totally not asking this to be an ass, I promise. I haven't looked in to see if you have content on your channel or not. Are you being asked your opinion on the steam deck, the g cloud, and the analog pocket? I was. That's why I made this video, to address those who were asking if and when I was going to review them. Some of the content that I produce for this channel are strictly opinion pieces, and there are people who are interested in my opinions on things such as this. As I stated multiple times in this video, these are exceptional pieces of hardware, no doubts there, but for me I can't rationalize the expense compared to the playtime the devices would get after the video was done, and the videos would not pay for themselves if that makes sense.
The Analogue Pocket and Steam Deck are great items but of course it's not for everyone. No reason to waste money on something you're not going to use. Thats my stance on why I'm not getting the Evercade XP
Overall great video looking forward to seeing more from ya there Gary! I'm surprised you said that about Xbox 😂 but glad to see you're expanding your horizons!
@@RoXolid looking forward to it, but on a serious note I used to be only Nintendo and Sony and since I got my Xbox One couple years ago now on the cheap cheap it's really what I play most and I can honestly say I never thought I would say that ever
good on you for knowing your own tastes. you know you are a console gamer and know that PC gaming isnt your forte. people forget that steam deck isnt a console. its a project PC- steam is testing the waters and while its an amazing device (i know cuz i have one) not everyone is willing to sit and learn how to manipulate linux or have to read guides on how to get their games to work if they dont work already. for what you get though i think its 100% worth it IF you are a PC Gamer who dont want to be tethered to a desk.
I've messed with Linux in the past and it's ok, but I don't want to deal with it. Right now I have to put it on my Laptop because I just got the Sonic Pad from Creality for my 3D Printer. I have to edit some of the code in Linux for my printer because it's not setup in the system yet. It's a pain. But, it's also knowing I don't need to own everything. I have so much just piled up now that I don't need more and will be selling stuff off soon!
@@RoXolid I've seen a lot of people buy the steam deck then when they realize it's not a console and doesn't come with all the niceties of a console (optimized ecosystem, closed market) they slam it and returning it because "they don't want to have to research problems or tinker" and I think - if you actually did the research before buying you probably would have saved yourself 700 bucks. If more people in the gaming sphere had that level of self awareness and self honesty that you talked about in this video and not just buy something because it's new we wouldn't have so many reviews with poor takes. I mean, it's common sense. If your not a PC gamer - why buy an experimental device made for PC games ammiright? Good video by the way, love the den
@@VyllenceGaming I completely agree, thanks for understanding my point of view. Too many have slammed me for my take, accused me of "Not getting it", and being "Stuck in the past". And it's almost EXCLUSIVELY Steam Deck defenders, no one has addressed the G Cloud or Pocket which I find humorous. The Steam Deck is a marvelous piece of tech, it truly is. I'm just not the customer for it. It would be like me looking at the new Corvette, sexy machine, right? But I have a toddler, I move stuff, go to conventions, so while I may appreciate what the Corvette offers, I love my GMC Acadia SUV and will probably buy another one in the future. I'm not hating on the Corvette, I'm not even saying those who buy Corvettes shouldn't. I'm just saying I am not the customer for that product. Thanks again!
@@RoXolid 100%. Its actually not hard to understand, being logical, an apple user shouldn't have to explain why he isn't going to buy the newest Samsung phone. And to get hate over that is just silly.
@@VyllenceGaming Exactly! Like I am intrigued by the iPhone hardware, but hate the software. And I love my S Pen so there's that, LOL. I think, unfortunately, it comes down to a team sport attitude. "This guy doesn't love what I love, even though he said really nice things about it, GET HIM!". I tried really hard not to dog on fans of these devices. And it is literally just the Steam Deck crowd who has gotten upset that I am not buying a Steam Deck. GCloud and Pocket owners... Silent.
I can play whatever I want however I want on my steam deck/pc where as I can't do that with a console. I have played old PC games from the 90's by popping in the CD and installing it. We're as I can't play Wii u games on my switch and the Wii U is from 2012. Some times you do have to fuss about befor the PC game works and it's not just plug and play. The Steam Deck is wors in that regard. The most funniest example to me is how I saw a video of someone playing a video game on their computer and they were using an Xbox 360 controller to play that game. If you were playing that game on Xbox you wouldn't be able to use the 360 controller because the Xbox one doesn't support the 360 controller.
Yeah steam deck is cool, just never got into it. And i prefer physical copies on every system. Especially genesis, SNES, NES and N64... Its just nostalgic to me... However the only time i start emulated is if the games are too stupid expensive. It was rare for the eshop to have most of those expensive games. Only ones it had was Earthbound and Dracula X. But another good alternative i do is i buy imports (if they have it) cause i own the analogue systems and will play imports. Or you can just buy repro carts. So you didnt say anything i didnt agree... Theres all kinds of solutions.
Portable gaming doesn't work for me. My neck and eyes always get sore when playing on a small screen regardless of the screen distance or viewing angle. Also. more rambling opinion videos :)
What if your cartridges dont work anymore some day? You should make backups and play with emulators on something like steamdeck...these games also can look better, better framerate...not everyone is pirating who is doing that. also a steamdeck is much better to hold than a gameboy.
People who are downloading roms aren't impacting anyone who is selling retro games from a physical game shop. Game collecting is a passion. Anyone who wants to truly own something is going to seek it out even if the option to pirate it is right in their face. If roms didn't exist, very few people are going to pay hundreds of dollars for a physical copy of a retro game. In fact, the existence of roms is probably the only thing keeping physical sellers from going even more nuts with the already high prices of these retro games
Subscribed. But I think there's a few points you missed or don't realize. For example, I play my entire Dead Space series pirated. Why? Because, even though I bought the game through steam, and origin allowed it to be sold on steam, they still require that I have the origin launcher installed in order to play the game. Even though both corps got their money already. So, I have to launch steam, launch the Dead Space game, wait for the origin launcher to open, and then launch the game through the origin launcher while I'm barraged with a bunch of ads from origin. Not to mention origin requiring you to be online to play games. Complete BS. Now YOU might not condone piracy in any way, but I think there are certain circumstances where it's just. You may like physical media, I may like physical media, but it's not available to everyone everywhere. Even in a first world country like ours. I live in Oahu. Good luck finding a vintage gaming media store here. Plus space is limited and pricey here. So having excess space to dedicate to physical media and the beautiful artwork is a real luxury. Yes, once the services go offline, most are screwed. But me personally, after I legit purchase the game, I head to either dodi_repacks or fitgirl_repacks or similar (later on) and download the pirated version for safe keeping and offline play if this ever does happen. I keep all the installer backups on a couple 2tb 2.5" ssd's which sit in my drawer until I buy a new game. Storage is cheap. It's easy to hoard loads of data. In regards to emulation, for most regular pc gamers like me, the only real option for emulation was either a desktop, laptop or your android/iPhone. There was no portable in between options. Well, not affordable anyways. But now there is. I can sit and play altered beast while my son skateboards. And I know there are other emulation devices, but none that are pc, as powerful and as capable. I have 3tb of solid state storage. Dual boot Linux and windows. Having a device that can do it all and be able to be taken anywhere and play (for the price) is nice. You should at least try it. Maybe some patreon supporters can get enough together for you try one out. This device is more than a gaming handheld. It's the milestone modern tech needed. Just look the size of your motherboard on your asus compared to the steam deck. It's mind boggling. I know, have a zephyrus. Seen both side by side. Just some food for thought.
"Now YOU might not condone piracy in any way, but I think there are certain circumstances where it's just.: - Not for me. If someone doesn't want to sell me their content I have no rights to it. It's their conent.
@@RoXolid problem is, they sold me the content, but then proceed to require me to be online to play just so I can see their ads. I KNOW being online is not a requirement for ANY game other than a server based type like wow or multi-player versions of a game (like blackops 2). And I'm pretty sure it's illegal. Just that no one's enforcing it. Same as how cricut disables your machine and software and can't use it unless it's online. I'm like 99% sure it's illegal. It's gotta be. You paid for the hardware and software. So, you think it's OK for a business to do that, but it's not OK for a person who paid for a legit license to play a pirated copy because he doesn't want to be barraged by ads and restricted to being online? Or wants to store an offline backup in case they do close their store and services? I'm curious to your response on this.
@@charlestannehill7537 This is the problem with digital or physical content. With Digital you really don't own it, you're purchasing a limited-use license to the content. Do I like it? Hell no. But that's why I am very restrictive when purchasing anything that's digital-only. It's a terrible business practice, but again, the copyright holder has the right to offer or not offer services for any length of time they wish. If they decide to cease offering content then, unfortunately, that is their right and you are left holding the bag with nothing to show for it. That's where I take the Buyer Beware approach. I pay for Paramount +, the commercial-free version. I STILL get commercials for other Paramount+ content. I hate it, I think it's contradictive to what they advertise for that tier of service, but it is my choice to or not subscribe and accept or reject that practice.
@@RoXolid if you pay for a license, you should have it for life. They should not be able to just pull it. That's why smart people like do what I do. Restricting to physical media limits capabilities, technological advancement, etc. What do you suggest? Everything be as small as a micro sd card? Even if that could be done, you'd still have to carry the physical media with you. Extremely cumbersome. Or you could get people in office to pass laws that makes it illegal operate this business practice. Remove online requirements. If a product is bought from you, you are required to support until bankrupt. I don't think people understand the capital that is generated from literally nothing (video games). These corporations are so rich it baffles you when you see the real numbers. Requiring other stipulations to take even more of your money shouldn't be allowed. Imagine when every service requires monthly payment to use even though you bought it. Next gen gaming will be media-less. Be happy with you got now. You aren't getting anymore. Everything is going to be digital soon. They'll force you to switch (pun).
Licenses need to be renewed frequently. Just look at your driver's license. What do I suggest? You do what you would like and feel is right and I'll do the same. I'm not going to convince you to see things my easy, nor are you going to be able to convince me, and that's ok. I'm not asking others to do as I do, and that's ok as well.
It just seems like the video was made to shout down anyone who has a different view, you preloaded it with poo pooing on anyone who may have a reason for why they do things Especially regarding emulation I disagree with you on principal alone I have a large physical collection that I much prefer but frankly after I bought the same game in 5 different formats I dont need to justify downloading a ROM If I own Chrono trigger on SNES, DS, PlayStation and Steam, I don't think me downloading a ROM for putting on my vita is a big deal You also have an in built bias towards the game stores since they are your friends and you promote gaming products on your channel and their stores Some (not all) retro gaming stores are often profiteering on old memories, often undercutting people and not paying people what their trade ins are worth because then they couldn't make the big bucks they make if they told the truth, when ppl walk in with a classic title are they telling them hey it's worth big bucks, sure maybe 1 in 5 stores does, most don't You completely one sided that entire situation That's my interpretation Edit: I do enjoy your content generally but this one caught me off guard
The focus on this was all about why I have no desire in buying these pieces of hardware. Actually the bias is less towards the local store and more pro small business. My local store doesn't sell online or anything, so I'm not really driving anyone to their doors . But when it's stated that downloading software doesn't hurt anyone completely ignores those people. It's unfortunate when people only look at the big names, Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft and the fact that they don't profit from 2nd hand sales. If you want to download a ROM have at it. That's copyrighted materials, anyway you slice it. There are ways you can backup your content to play on other devices. As a staunch capitalist I firmly believe something is worth what sometime is willing to buy/sell it for. So if someone offers a lowball price when buying something and the seller accepts that offer, what's wrong with that? And if someone is selling something for a high price and someone else is willing to pay that price it is neither over priced or under priced, it is accurately priced as it resulted in a sale.
You're also just focusing on the ROM downloading. All these devices have stores to purchase and download content from. I'm already invested in other eshops, and as someone who doesn't play in handheld typically, the hardware doesn't interest me. And if you want to play ROMs and ISOs there are other, less expensive options out there.
Piracy is the true way of preservation even those physical discs/cartridges will eventually rot away. And I don't care about the small family stores when they try to charge me 100$ for a used copy of Custard's Revenge unlike you I don't have that rich YT money .
@@RoXolid Less than you would probably wish and more than I could ever hope for. Rich is very subjective, to me who's working minimum wage to survive in not the riches country on the planet dude you're loaded. There's no chance in my life of owning a ROG laptop much less 1/10 of the crap you got. For my only OLED tv I had to take a 4 year loan and that was for one of the cheaper LG BLX model.
@@Sevent77 The ROG laptop I got I bought an open-box deal for, so there's that I didn't buy all this at once, I did it little by little. The TV in my game room isn't OLED, it's not even HDR. Again, it was an open-box purchase in 2015. I started out at minimum wage myself, and through hard work and dedication, reinvestment in myself I've gotten where I am at. When I was younger my family relied on the food pantry, we lived on powdered milk, my dad worked multiple jobs just to not lose the house. I get what it's like to struggle, more than you'll ever understand. What I make from UA-cam is less than 5% of my annual income, and I spend more than that to keep producing content. I've made over 260 videos just in the first 10 1/2 months of 2022, so there's a grind there. So do me a favor, don't focus on where you are, make a plan and execute it for where you want to be, and you'll be surprised what you can accomplish. I never even went to college, but through hard work and never giving up I've accomplished what I have. Rich YT money, seriously... Like yeah, whatever man. If I were making that "Rich YT Money" I'd quit my regular job and just be my own boss.
@@RoXolid Then you should've simply said that if not all of it you paid for from your regular job and YT is just a side job/hobby and not be a jerk about it. As for what I don't understand F you buddy I was raised by a single divorced mother alongside my two sisters, I didn't know your life so don't go presuming you know mine.
No, you didn't know my life nor my situation. You made assumptions, YOU dropped the "Rich UA-cam Money" line thinking that this was all I do for an income. And no, I don't know you and you don't know me, but you're the one who came in with an attitude and all I did was correct your incorrect perspective.
Why switch is superior to these other devices, its easy to use, and you dont need the internet to use it. I love downlaoding games on my switch but one of the things that makes the switch better is because you can get actaul physical copies of some of the games for it. Whether be through local store or ordering online.
You need the internet for a Steam Deck as much as you need the internet for a Switch. Whether these other devices is easy to use or not is debatable. Personally, I like the Steam Deck's design more, as it actually fits right into your hands like an actual controller. The Switch is really flat feeling, and most people need a grip to correct its design. As far as physical games goes, there's a give and a take to that. If you don't mind paying out the nose, physical is a nice feel good novelty, but you can get those same games on PC for pennies on the dollar on key selling sites. Personally, I'd rather keep the money in my pocket, so long as I get to experience the game, I really don't care about holding onto it physically. We're all going to our graves anyway. I just want to experience cool things.
@@RoXolid Doesn't have steamdeck so wouldn't know. I just have the switch and switch lite. Kind miss my wii u, i loved using the gamepad a lot on that.
But only for me, like I mentioned you do you. For me I can't rationalize downloading roms. I also can't rationalize buying a system I would rarely if ever use for that much money.
I collect physical games to their bellies and download in them you don’t own the rights to these games when they shut down the PlayStation store you don’t have access to your games anymore
You don't technically own the license to the physical game you own either, and there is a chance that they too will cease to function at some point. That's why video gamer preservation is important.
So many Steam Deck fanboys down thumbing this video. When you reach 40 years old handheld gaming isn't for everyone anymore. I remember how I use to use my PSP back in 2005 for so many hours and now with my Switch lite I rather play my games in tabletop mode which is why I bought an OLED Switch. It sad I just bought recently a 3DS XL, PSVITA and a Switch Lite. I hardly use those handhelds because my fingers get cramped and start hurting after 20 or 30 minutes of gaming. Not like before I could use my PSP for 6 hours straight when I was in my mid 20s.
Thanks for the understanding. Here's what I don't get, I didn't say it was garbage or bad tech. I said it was damn cool, but I was not the target customer. And for that I get burned. Ok I guess. But they're the only one who came after me, Analogue and GCloud fans did not and I'm also not buying those.
So the logitech...basically for people living in the biggest cities in world commuting long distances with exceptional wifi....the steam deck..pretty much same thing with the added benefit on playing actual gsmedownloads but its underpowered in reality and most pc games play with mouse and keyboard. Docking it would be dumb cause u could just use a pc at that point. But pocket.. i mean the only thing bad about it " if u dont use the cores " is the comfort aspect of it. And the flimsy slot design. Otherwise its the best gameboy money csn buy by a large margin. Lol
If you're going to buy an fpga system in a flashcard why not just go with the retropie? It would be cheaper in the long run I'm probably run better and give you more options
No point in the steam deck when you can get a gaming laptop for about the same price that does way more. Plus like you said about arthritis, i cant play handhelds. I cut meat for a living. Not to mention my awful genetics. My shoulders are gone, my hands shake and cramp even when im not doing anything. Cant play portable and these semi portables typically output terrible settings and resolution even docked. In a 4k world, why bother? Just get a laptop.
@@BrochachoTheBro no its not. I said just buy a laptop instead. I did not compare the laptop and steam deck. Idk why thats so hard for you kiddos to grasp.
Yes, digital stores will shut down, but there will always be other options. Do you really want to bother your life down with a bunch of physical possessions surrounding you at all times?
I would rather have the physical media that I can play at any time versus be at the whim of someone else's digital storefront. Again, I can't go and download The Simpsons arcade game from the PlayStation store anymore, nor was that ever available physically
In 2022 the steam deck is obsolete, but handheld PCs are the future of gaming. I'll be getting a 6800u handheld PC asap, largest selection of games, backwards compatibility, free online multiplayer and emulation, it's a no brainer for me. Every tine you buy a new Console you have to buy all new games again, and you have to pay for online multiplayer.
@@discountmichaelchiklis handheld PCs have been releasing every 6 months since gpd win 3... Now they have 6800u handheld PCs that completely destroy the deck in specs and performance.
@@RoXolid what does your preference have to do with the facts of the matter, steam deck is already obsolete and handheld PCs are objectively better than consoles by any measure?
@@davidagiel8130 Because my preferences drive my buying decisions, what I play and how I play it. Regarding the obsolescence of the Steam Deck, that's no different than your new phone being obsolete by the time you buy it. And PCs may be better for you than consoles to play games on, but for me, not so. That's the beauty of options. People can play how they want!
@@RoXolid That's great but you could just choose not to purchase them and not make a video for hits. Majority of youtubers try to manipulate people or seek out comments that agree with them on their decision. I haven't bought anything either but I'm not about to post about it or even tell my friends. You're not wasting your money on them that's great but I'm sure you're wasting your money on something else. For some they look at it as an investment. Like I could say you wasting your money on a new camera for your youtube channel is a big waste of money but for you it's an investment. I use the same phone for the past 5 years where everyone else around me gets an upgrade every 9 months it seems. Phone makes calls and texts all I need it for but someone else needs the latest and greatest maybe for their job or just they have the money. Billions of people exist and a lot of them have the freedom to pick what they enjoy instead of try to take that joy away from others. Maybe someone who isn't as wealthy as you since you already admitted you're far from broke worked overtime and saved hard to purchase the steam deck. Good for them if that makes them happy. Every hobby and any material thing we as people own can be considered waste of money. Everything in a sense is already outdated and something else is better. That's just reality.
Computer games used to be something special and completely different from (console) video games. Now that the PC is just another platform that most games are released on, I have no interest in gaming on the PC.
@@NeptuneSega You may not be old enough to remember, but back in the 90's, "computer games" were a whole different world than "video games". Yes, there were a few ports of console games on PC and some PC ports on consoles, but usually they were completely separate ecosystems. You sit at a desk with a mouse and keyboard usually to play a lot of PC games instead of on a couch in front of a TV with a controller. There were the simple little mouse click games like solitaire and minesweeper, as well as in-depth simulation and strategy games that were not on the consoles of the time. Computer games were often built around the mouse-keyboard control scheme.
Or a father with a family to support and enough ways to not play the already huge backlog of titles in my collection, and someone who doesn't play in handheld mode. Or that.

oh boy gary you've gone and done it.
If someone is willing to pay the price for something then the price is not unreasonable or absurd. But then again I'm a pretty staunch capitalist...
You can't fake sales at a convention or store.
I will play what I please pirated or not. IDGAF about corporations, they don't care about me.

All great points. However, in terms of games that are no longer readily available - emulation is the only way.
I won't do that myself, but if you want to have at it!
Playing any retro console in a Plane for example is something you can't do with any original consoles (unless you heavily mod them and make them portable yeah)
"This video should have been an email" saying he just doesn't like it or doesn't interest him and thats it. Not all this unnecessary talking.
Exactly, one of his points is that he's invested into the switch ecosystem and not steams, the switch doesn't have an ecosystem, once the new system comes out the games don't carry over
I'm a console and not a PC gamer. I don't play handhelds. So in that way you're right.
I never said emulation was bad. Just that it's not for me
@@RoXolid didn't mean it like that, sorry. Just meant I prefer original too, but emulation isn't all bad for me.

Just wanted to add, I enjoy the channel.
@@ZombieTechie Thanks so much
Just curious I play my games on a retron 5 since I’m playing on the carts due you still think that’s okay since it plays roms?
You're playing off the cartridge, even though it is instantly dumping the ROM. I had a Retron 5, it's a neat device.
I love my Steam deck. Didn't think i would. It does what my Switch can't.
I get that
Nice video! What is the console that you use for the games on the big display behind? Thank you.
That's my Switch
I do prefer to dump my games cause aside from your points you made sometimes you don't know what else might be attached to the download on random websites that roms are on too, but I would love to have a full physical media option instead of just getting discs that are pretty much a download unlock feature I think they should give us that option! At the very least!
I didn't mention that but you're right.
@@RoXolid it would be nice 👍🙂 lol
I’ve recently gone all in digital/physical. I love owning games physically for collecting but I want to ensure keeping disc clean and undamaged so I own them digitally to play conveniently without getting up.
Where would be a good place online to buy a rom dumper, specifically for gameboy, gba and ds or 3ds?

I'm honestly not a fan of most indie games. There are very few I really play more than a few minutes on.
So I'm sorry, it's fine if you don't want to buy the system but "not being invested" is a nonsense reason
You also don't have to worry about losing digital games on PC, it's not a closed system like a console.
It's funny, I'm sure you realize actually backing up your console cartridges/disks to make them digital and play them on the original system later on is kinda difficult, so there's the risk of deterioration that you simply don't have with digital PC games
As I said, I'm not trying to convince you that you need a Steam Deck, I'm merely addressing these two points since they didn't make a lot of sense.

I get that, its just not for me but if you want to play on it then totally just have fun!
If people are willing to pay the asking price they're not overpriced by definition.
@@crazyoldschool6342 If someone is willing to pay that price that is what it's worth.
I respect this video.
I bought a steam deck many months ago and sold it last week.
Neat piece of tech for sure, however I just wasn’t playing it after 2 weeks and it was essentially sitting there collecting dust. I love video games. However I found I just didn’t enjoy gaming in bed or sitting away from my gaming pc lol
Anyways, I hope the new owner is getting far better use out of it than I did :)
Thanks for watching. I'm the opposite, I don't care for most indie games but I love Nintendo IPs
@@WyvernDotRed not legally though
Thanks, and I love that you love your Steam Deck! I'm just not their customer is all, but I don't think it's a bad piece of hardware, far from it!
Thanks for your perspective

3) I agree with your take on roms, piracy and local game stores support. I don't really like handhelds, I play the Switch either docked or in table top.
Same here
Great video and explanation.
Thanks and great points
The whole "support the developers" argument in the retro gaming scene is so dumb, and I'm glad you loosely touched on it. It seems to plague a lot of the retro gaming channels on UA-cam for years. I cringed every time anyone threw that defense out there.
That said, what are your thoughts on repro? Should owning a reproduction cart justify downloading the same rom or even dumbing your own repro? The devs are not getting a dime from it, and it also kept the lights on for resellers.
If a repro is licensed, like what Retro-bit does, totally cool. Otherwise, nope
Agreed!! Personally, picking up the game from my shelf, reading the manual and bix if o have I a big part of the gaming experience!!!
And for some people they would rather have a gaming jukebox to just scroll thru a menu and play. As long as you're playing it's all good to me!
Wow, you managed to make absolutely zero good or arguable points as to why to not own a steam deck. impressive how long someone can ramble and make absolutely zero point.
Since you didn't keep up, here's the TL:DW version for you
A) not invested in any of the libraries
B) I don't play in handheld
C) I have other ways to play which makes this am unnecessary expenditure
Thanks for watching
I just ordered my steam deck... looking forward to getting it soon. I have a ton of steam games that I may actually play now lol.
I hope you dig it!
I buy current games, no questions asked. But, when the game is 20 to 30 years old, and I have purchased it more than once in the past, I will now download a copy of it to play, if I no longer own it…. especially if the game is no longer made and/or it’s incredibly expensive on the third party market
And that's your prerogative. I will not myself. But then again I still have the old hardware that I can play the previous versions on as well
7:05 "Rationalization is the second strongest human drive".
That's just how I prefer to play
Also, as someone who isn't into that market, I'm not a PC Gamer or PC Master Race follower, I don't feel my voice is needed on those topics when there are other, more authorative voices on the subject.

Tomorrow of Friday's video is Xbox related

good on you for knowing your own tastes. you know you are a console gamer and know that PC gaming isnt your forte. people forget that steam deck isnt a console. its a project PC- steam is testing the waters and while its an amazing device (i know cuz i have one) not everyone is willing to sit and learn how to manipulate linux or have to read guides on how to get their games to work if they dont work already. for what you get though i think its 100% worth it IF you are a PC Gamer who dont want to be tethered to a desk.
Silent.
Completely agree with 99.9% of what you said.
Thanks so much for watching!!
I was never into PC gaming either much besides like Doom and stuff. I was always a console guys. I like the simplicity of consoles.
We just didn't have a computer when I was growing up. I didn't have my first computer until '95
Physical games always. I’d like to actually own the game
We'll see, I need to determine if I want the headaches if you get my drift.
What if your cartridges dont work anymore some day? You should make backups and play with emulators on something like steamdeck...these games also can look better, better framerate...not everyone is pirating who is doing that. also a steamdeck is much better to hold than a gameboy.
I am thinking about the SteamDeck because it’s a handheld and all the emulation capabilities.
If you're into handhelds and emulation that's the way to go
People who are downloading roms aren't impacting anyone who is selling retro games from a physical game shop.
And that's one way to look at it. I don't share that view but I do understand that view.
Not the best take but to each their own
Less a take and more of an explination to those who had inquired as to if/when I'd be reviewing these items.
Hehe - the only person on the planet not playing roms...classic. Fair play if that's what you want to do.
I'm good with that, not a member of the PC Master Race Crowd
This video seems kinda aggressive
Like WOW I'm kinda blown away
Aggressive? Not my intention at all. How did it seem aggressive?
Literally the most non aggressive video you’ve put out. Like WOW.
It just seems like the video was made to shout down anyone who has a different view, you preloaded it with poo pooing on anyone who may have a reason for why they do things
Especially regarding emulation I disagree with you on principal alone
I have a large physical collection that I much prefer but frankly after I bought the same game in 5 different formats I dont need to justify downloading a ROM
If I own Chrono trigger on SNES, DS, PlayStation and Steam, I don't think me downloading a ROM for putting on my vita is a big deal
You also have an in built bias towards the game stores since they are your friends and you promote gaming products on your channel and their stores
Some (not all) retro gaming stores are often profiteering on old memories, often undercutting people and not paying people what their trade ins are worth because then they couldn't make the big bucks they make if they told the truth, when ppl walk in with a classic title are they telling them hey it's worth big bucks, sure maybe 1 in 5 stores does, most don't
You completely one sided that entire situation
That's my interpretation
Edit: I do enjoy your content generally but this one caught me off guard
Yeah, all that rich UA-cam money. How much of that rich UA-cam money do you suppose I make?
@@RoXolid Less than you would probably wish and more than I could ever hope for.
Rich is very subjective, to me who's working minimum wage to survive in not the riches country on the planet dude you're loaded.
There's no chance in my life of owning a ROG laptop much less 1/10 of the crap you got.
For my only OLED tv I had to take a 4 year loan and that was for one of the cheaper LG BLX model.
@@Sevent77 The ROG laptop I got I bought an open-box deal for, so there's that
I didn't buy all this at once, I did it little by little.

Superior is a relative term. You do not need the internet to use the Analogue Pocket and that uses actual cartridges for example

I use the same phone for the past 5 years where everyone else around me gets an upgrade every 9 months it seems. Phone makes calls and texts all I need it for but someone else needs the latest and greatest maybe for their job or just they have the money.
