UPDATE, UPDATE, UPDATE!!! I got my boards back from the cabnetry shop, and OH BOY! They did a great job for me! They put the boards through their CNC machine and milled that Dutch lap profile and added tonge/grooves, such that I now have boards that have tonge and grooves and the final product looks like two boards the exact size. Now all I have to do is cut the top of the extra boards with the touge, to make the thrid piece and slide it under the groove thats on the bottom of the first board. They charged me $140, which I think was a steal considering having to purchase a router bit for $90-100 and do all of the work. Hey Bill, your technique inspired this update. Thank you again for posting your video.
I like your video. Thanks for posting. At 5:11 you suggest running a bead of caulk where there is that 1/8 inch overlap. There are a whole lot of people who would say not to do that. Their theory is that any water that gets behind the siding needs a place to get out. Some siding underlayment (my incorrect word) even has vertical grooves to help channel any unwanted water down to the ground and away from the back side of the siding.
I don’t have those big shop tools so I’m going take my material to a local cabinetry shop and pay them to shape this board like shown here. Thanks Bill for the video. Been chasing a solution for this problem for weeks now. My patience paid off.
The OSB siding I'm using to replace my Masonite fascia and soffit is 3/8 of an inch thick. Home Depot - Model # 498558 Store SKU # 498558 - LP SmartSide - 4 ft x 8 ft x 0.375 in 38 Series Cedar Texture Soffit Engineered Treated Wood Siding I believe Bill Gibson used the following: Home Depot - Model # 28869 Store SKU # 694876 - LP SmartSide - 7.84 in x 144 in x 0.315 in Lap Engineered Treated Composite Siding - $10.92 One of these might the same as what he used or could be the one you need. Rockler #21522 is 2-1/2" D x 1/2" H x 1/2" Shank Cove Horizontal Raised Panel Bit - $89.99 Each Rockler #39456 is 3-1/2" D x 5/8" H x 1/2" Shank Cove Horizontal Raised Panel Bit - $114.99 Each
I’m only replacing the lower most board that will require 3 pieces as the original material has 3x4” shapes. It has water damage. Everything above is alright. Going to use tinted (to match) exterior primer on all edges/surfaces especially on the bottom row.
TY Bill! I was cursed to have the exact masonite siding on your existing product-pattern, color and width. Your finished product looks to be an identical match, great job. My question is EXACTLY what material and manufacturer product did you replace it with? Excellent job, great video! Thx again!!
Hi Bill, I'm having the same problem as others with making sure that I'm getting the correct router bit from Rockler. They have discontinued the Part # 733175215220 and their support is telling me to order Item #21522, however it states 2-1/2" D x 1/2" H x 1/2" Shank Rockler Cove Horizontal Raised Panel Bit. Can I use this bit? Thank you!!!
I had aboit 200 sqaure feet of rotted masonite out of 3000 square feet of siding. Just replaced it with vinyl siding instead of fixing it. Once it starts getting water damage its game over.

Thanks bill, this really helps as a DIYer. Will look into the tools. Bought the home recently and started noticing some chips already 😔
Awesome! I think this is exactly what I am needing!
Hey bill do you have the info in the siding i’m dealing with this same issue and trying to get it fixed.

Lap Engineered Treated Composite Siding - $10.92

Would love your thoughts on making your fix work where the 1st "starter" board at the bottom is rotted and needs to be replaced.

@@billgibson--tacticalyakn--outd we’re you able to get the info on the bit?
Rockler part # 39456, just got mine today, but can’t find 1/2” siding, everything is 3/8
@@tedmiller1497Did you see if it matched the contour of the old paneling?

This is the worse siding ever invented...
