  • Skyroam, a virtual SIM data provider that offers mobile hotspots and data plans originally geared towards international travel, has added a new global and domestic USA based data option.
Skyroam's new never-expiring data option is $5-8/GB for domestic or $9-11/GB for Global - with some discounting for set data buckets of 5GB and more.
Skyroam data plans are tied to a proprietary hotspot device and cannot be used with other devices. Skyroam has never been forthcoming about the carriers they utilize in the U.S.

Thanks for this video. I checked Skyroam out this morning before seeing your video. Might be ok for some situations but in general not for me. Thanks again for your informative videos. Very much appreciated.

Thanks for this overview, very helpful. Sure seems like a lot of hassle to call them every time I'm in a different area to get assigned a carrier. Even at $5/GB that's not much of a deal. It's clearly not competitive when I can get 30GB for $30 from Verizon without throttling. I guess this would work as a backup if Verizon didn't have coverage (that's rare) and T Mobile or ATT did, providing me with more flexibility to bounce between carriers when I need to. However, with their lack of transparency about carriers I don't trust them. I'd never consider this product as an option, but that's me.

You don't have to call them.. you purchase data in the app, and the device handles the rest.

Oh, MIRC didn't mention anything about external antennas, network connections, WiFi 2.4GHZ / 5GHz, speeds, etc. Please be more about "news" in the future. Have you tried their app? How did that go? Please give us the "news".

Don't get Skyroam if you need AT&T connection. I got the hockey puck to use as a backup for WFH. I only have strong AT&T coverage in my area and am just on the edge of T Mobile. It will connect but will only stay connected for a minute or two and then disconnect. Even after talking to customer service numerous times and them making "adjustments" and telling them I need an AT&T connection I still have the same disconnection problem and they won't just come out and admit they can't use AT&T.

Thanks for the data point. We've only ever seen ours use T-Mobile.

We didn't recommend them in this video. This is a news video to inform viewers about the details of a new option, it's not a recommendation or review. We mentioned the lack of external antenna connections in the video as well as other pros and cons.

The data plans are ridiculously expensive

I wonder if the data plans are lower priority from the carriers and thus lower speeds.

I saw the new 5G Skyroam device and got real excited. And then I saw it was $399. And then I looked at my use case and asked myself if getting some additional download speed (on occasion) was worth an extra $260 plus whatever extra they will charge for 5G data (5G data plans pricing has not been disclosed yet). They updated the Skyroam 4G unit in 2022 and it's still ~$140. With a decent 4G signal you can check email, texts, surf the web, and even stream video. But if you're in a location with poor cell tower reception, having a 5G device may not help the situation.
