    This was the answer to my prayers. I’ve been trying to decide what curriculum to choose for my son (4th grade) but I’m flabbergasted by the cost almost $1500…and it’s mostly books that I can check out from the library. 😂 anywho, I kept thinking there has to be a better way to do this and then your video popped up. I’d like to avoid the annoying nagging feeling of not being able to use ALL of the curriculum 😂Thank you.

      Avoid those "proprietary" curriculum. They tend to be all hype and little substance, or at least no better than the cheaper or free things. They think because they made the curriculum visually beautiful, they can charge 10x as much. ;) $1500 is about what I've spent for grades 1-9 for Ambleside Online (including beautiful art and craft supplies) and other than notebooks and pencils, it can all be reused for all of my kids.

    How often would you encourage note booking in the elementary years? I don’t want to make it seem like “schoolwork”. 😂

    How do you do note booking with children who hate writing? Eg, if I have my child the periodic table book, they’d immediately finish reading it in a day but certainly not be willing to even summarise anything, and if anything at all it would end up as one fragment and half a sentence only… any tips would be greatly appreciated!

    • @elisabeth...
      @elisabeth... 3 місяці тому +5

      Haven't dealt with this issue personally, but I've known people who have their reluctant writers do a digital notebook(they type a sentence or two, or type out vocabulary words, etc) and then they find pictures online or quotes, etc and paste that to their notebook document page.
      I've also known people who will just have their children orally summarize what they read and the parent writes it in the notebook.
      A newer option I've seen is letting the child record(either video or just audio) their thoughts/summary/etc. One mom even created a private youtube channel for her son(videos were only visible to him) and he would create videos for every book/topic/etc

    Do you combine notebooking with oral narration?
    Also you you prepare a plan for the year(s) ahead or syllabus?
    I just wonder how to flow in a relaxed state while also having some sort of map to guide me along.

    Hi Sherry :) I'm using your McGuffey lesson books, but I'm wondering if it's too much to have my kids do a notebooking page each day after some self-reading. I guess I'm asking if kids find it to be too much writing in one day 😅

    • @MomDelights
      @MomDelights  2 місяці тому +2

      That's a good question. I believe it depends on the child and his age. When they are younger, say, before the age of 12, I tend to think that doing a McG's lesson plus a notebooking page daily would be a bit of an overload. One or two scheduled notebooking pages, with room for an impromptu one here-or-there would be plenty.

    • @nbobrick17
      @nbobrick17 2 місяці тому +1

      Okay, yes, thank you for confirming my thoughts. My oldest is almost 9, and i was having a hard time thinking of where i could fit notebooking in without burdening her. Ill do your suggestion and just do notebooking occasionally. Thank you for your wisdom ❤@MomDelights

  • @cassandrapowell1671
    @cassandrapowell1671 2 місяці тому +1

    Once the child does the notebook page do you check it for errors? Do they have to go back and correct errors?
    I've been homeschooling for a few years and haven't been very successful I feel. I'm not very creative nor the smartest I suppose. I love the idea of note booking but can't get my head wrapped around it for some reason. If you haven't got a curriculum, can you just begin reading books and doing note booking pages and that be it?

    • @MomDelights
      @MomDelights  2 місяці тому

      As to the first question, I generally do not correct their notebooking pages. I might point out something egregious, but mostly I simply enjoy all of their efforts. For the second question, I actually have some videos on what education really is that may help you. Basically education consists of four main parts, one of them being the skills such as reading, writing, and arithmetic, and another being content. We spend time focusing in on the basic skills, then we add in content, and that content is a huge category, since it encompasses the entire cosmos and its history. Besides basic skills (as well as character and application) we simply pick things we are interested in and delve in. One thing that always helps me: No education program has ever been able to cover EVERYTHING--and I'm not going to be able to, either. My main job is to give my children the tools for learning and help them to become life-long learners. I hope this helps you as you sort things out :)

    Thanks for this! Looking forward to seeing your next video on this topic, as I am a visual learner, anxious to see examples! So far loving this idea. I have a first grader and we went heavy on bookwork this fall, but now are reaching a bit of a burnout point. It is finally nice weather here (Canada), so we've been enjoying more outdoor time the past few weeks!

    One of my regrets about our early homeschool years is not having more notebooking time and less “imitating school” time.

    I started using Notebooking pages about 4 weeks ago. It is still hit and miss with my son.
    I am not sure what I should expect of each child for their age. Did you have certain expectations for each child?
    My 11 year old son is very skilled at doing the bare minimum.
    We have done an illustration with a few sentences, he wrote 5 short sentences. Used a wordsearch generator for vocabulary words , he typed in only 7 words. His mind map only had 3 branches.
    Is this a boy thing?

      @Sevenarrowsacademy 3 місяці тому +2

      Lol lol😂 I love what you said about him being "skilled"! I have 7 children and all 4 of my son's had this skill! I learned to collect all the bare minimums that they would do and put them all together for a completed project.
