Is the motor that noisy in all of them? It's very disconcerting and unrealistic to have a motor grinding every time it moves its head,
Yes, the motors are like that on them. That’s why I made sure to get footage of what it sounds like, so people would know what the noise is really like. Would be an unpleasant surprise to buy one expecting the motors to be silent.
I have the Meta dog on order. Hopefully they make more soon. I already have the new 2.0 Meta Cat.

Do they have a heart beat when on mute?
No, they don’t have a heartbeat when on mute. They just move their tails and heads and respond to commands with no sound. Let me know if you have any other questions, I’ll try to help.

This is gonna sound a little crazy, but I live alone and talk to myself. I think it’d be pretty awesome to get a meow or bark back! Does one do this better than the other?
Yes, I’d like the heartbeat to stay on too. Maybe it will in the future. I know they do updated versions now and then. To answer your question, one factor might have some bearing on that: metaCat turns off after about 3 minutes if you don’t touch her or give her voice commands. metaDog stays on about 15 minutes without touch or commands. But, other than that they both meow or bark regularly when on and respond equally to voice commands. Hope that helps!
