Cool, didn't know about he clutch plates , oil drain down, of course I never let the bike set for a long time . Ride all year long in Florida. Great tips, thanks man.
My bike is on the charger ALL THE TIME when not in use. I replace my battery every 5 years, no exceptions. Current ride is a 2012 XL1200C. Made some changes to suit my riding style and now have a pretty decent long-distance bike. Have been riding for over 51 years and have owned many bikes, Harleys and otherwise. Enjoy your videos very much...ride safe.
02’ FatBoy and I try to do most of the maintenance on her myself. Always learning new stuff even 17 years later. Thanks for the videos you make. Wish I knew more guys like yourself in my area. I’d be up for riding or picking your brain about the bikes. Thanks again for tidbits 😉
Just had my first Harley, a Forty Eight 2013 since Nov 2017. Already had 2000 kms done!!! Moreover, on a small island called Mauritius. Love the bike and love your channel. Keep up the good videos... cheers
It's always bloody raining here in Wales, thinking of moving somewhere warmer seeing as I am retired. Bought the bike ad a 60th birthday present to myself --- much to my partners disgust lol 🖒😎
I ride a 2009 Victory hammer and I had to jumpstart it because The battery died after it’s been sitting for about 2 months this video was very helpful, Thank you brother!!
Thanks John! Did exactly what you did on my Dyna Street Bob now and fired up immediately.. It's winter in South Africa and due to Covid-19 we can't go out so the bikes just sit.. Much appreciated
Ft. Smith, Ar. here, have an 07' Heritage. When weather doesn't allow for riding during the winter, I use a battery tender and start her up every so often to get her juices flowing.
check out my winterization video. It's not good to start your bike and let it run for just a few minutes. It allows water (from condensation) to circulate through your engine. It's very important to allow your bike to reach operating oil temps!!!
Hello John, awesome advise, it's being cold in Houston TX. And didn't ride my bike or at least star it up in the garage for so long, after watching your video to the end, I start rocking my bike back and forth on gear and after doing that with the battery full try to start the bike but nothing, I go straight to jump start with my car and brum bruuuuuum, just like that, my bike it's up and running again, thank you so much 😜👍🏼
1996 Ultra Classic and a 1998 Heritage Springer... evos forever. As a side note, my springer sat all winter and didn’t wet sump. If check ball and oil pump are in good shape, not an issue. Great videos, I like every one I’ve seen.
I have a 96 xl1200c sporty and a 99 dyna wide glide with the 88ci. I just ran across your vids. I live in GA too about an hour and fifteen mins from your shop. Subscribed!!
Great tips as always thank you John! My ride is a 2004 Sportster I bought it new from Boston Harley Davidson. Few years down the road I installed a 1212 kit and screamin eagle cams in my driveway. I should start a “Girls Can Wrench Too” channel.
Very helpful, I ride a 2021 Sportster 48 I bought in 2021. My previous was a 2020 ' 883. There is not a lot of difference in the actual bike. However, the extra power in very nice. (You understand....
For years I've though HD would be bringing a springer front end back. With the new softail frame, it is clearly never coming back. It makes me sad, but more grateful to own one!
The older bikes are nice and accessible for the most part...but had an adventure when i unloaded my breakout after trailering both my rides up north for a get away...i forgot about the FIN system alarm and trailer mode...many choice words as my jumper cable clamps were too big to get a bite on the battery with how recessed it is on the breakout so it ended up a great excuse to get my 95 out on the road hitting up places and dealers for a quality jump/tender box...
LOVE that springer front end! I have two bikes at the moment. A 2001 Softail Custom Chrome kit bike 88 ci Rev Tech & Rev Tech 5 spd. It sadly spends most of it's time on my stand in my garage getting minor repairs now instead of ridden. I also have a 2013 Sportster 72 I ride to work everyday. I hope to get something like a newer Road Glide in the future for longer trips & keep the Softail as a project bike & the Sportster for commuting to work
You’re supposed to connect the negative cable to the chassis of the bike not the battery terminal. This is a common and very dangerous mistake that could result in serious injuries.
Rode when I was a teenager - then after a 30 year break, started riding again. Bikes I've had: when i was a kid: '83 Yamaha "Special II" --- then 30 year break next: 2012 Yamaha V-Star 950 - rode that for 6 months or so current bike: 2013 Harley Switchback (FLD)
Thanks John. I left my accessory switch on and drained the battery. I appreciate the information. I’ve watched a few of your videos and I’ve learned a great deal. Just subscribed. I ride a 98 FXDWG that the wife gave my for our 35th wedding anniversary. Got to love a woman that supports your habit. Looking forward to watching more of your by. Thanks again
Just picked up my 2019 Ultra Limited! Can't wait to get off work and go for a ride. Waiting for all my Kahuna accessories to come in. :-) traded in my 2006 Electra glide classic touring for it...
Hello. Thanks for the Awesome videos John., Keep them coming. I just traded in my 2016 Dyna Low Rider it had a 103 stage one with 2 into one Vance and Hynes. Solo seat, black with the brugendy Harley Davidson. Had 1230 miles when I bought it. And 2500 when I traded it in for a 2018 Road King witch had 132 miles on it black and chrome. Got that Oct 9th now has 280 miles.
Thanks for mentioning the clutch plates. My 82 fxr plates were stuck. Took em apart, cleaned them, seems better but I am having trouble with cold starts. New battery, had it load tested advance says it’s putting out 313 cca. I wonder if it’s the plates binding up just enough to give me trouble on cold starts. Love your vids. Thanks.
I own a 97' FLSTC all done up nice with Chrome and upgardes ( E27 Cam, Mikuni Carb, Thunderheaders, Arlen Ness big sucker air filter ect.) I'm from Cali but now live in WA State where I'm finding few mechs who can work on my FL. HD will only work on itduring Dec & Jan due to unavailable parts and some shops won't even touch it. I don't want a new bike, just would like to maintain my 97' till my last days...
I bought an '07 Lowrider in July '06 in Kansas. Rode around the US for a couple of years but I was working overseas 2 months on/1 month off so even if I rode every day when home it was only 3 months/yr. (1 month snow). In '08 I left for Europe and shipped the bike in late '09. Since Feb 2010 been riding around southern Europe (125K miles on the clock). Moved from Portugal to Serbia in Oct '17 and been riding around the Balkans, Croatia, Slovenia and Italy since. Got up at a hotel in Torino, Italy in '16 and the battery was dead. Hotel manager borrowed a car battery and cables from a nearby gas station and helped me get it started. When I got back to Portugal I bought a new battery and a portable battery jump starter that now rides in saddle bag. Haven't needed to use it on the bike but have started a couple of cars for people on the road.
1983 Honda CX650 Custom was my first, 1985 Honda VF1000R was my next. Been out of the game for 18 years. Getting back in with a 2007/6 FXSTC when I find the color/miles/price I want. Thats how I found your channel as well.
2012 Heritage 50k. My first Harley. I live in Florida and the longest trip was two up, to Maggy Vally and all the wonderful roads up there of cores tail of the dragon.
New to harley here, hasn't stopped me fitting a 1275 hammer kit to my sporty though....... 90 UltraClassicTourGlide, 97 SportserS. Occasionally ride my dads 57 Shovel. Was having this convo with him about the oil in the crankcase so I googled it. I know this vid is old but its awesome. Like your style bro😎

Cant do this with a street 500... Thanks for the video. Where are the easiest points to jump start or trickle charge a street 500? Thanks for your work.
Hey John nice to meet you this is Matt I have a 2006 1200 Street Bob I started it about 2 weeks ago and I've been trying to keep a regular schedule with starting it at least once every two weeks or once a week and letting it sit for half hour to keep it all kosher and running good at the moment I've had to pop my clutch so far twice in the last month I believe it's been so cold that my battery has been dying question is I'm not doing any damage by popping the clutch correct if so please let me know and I will stop I watched how you jump with a car which I am about to go outside and do if it needs to I have not tried starting it yet I just put it in the sun right now so that way the sun can warm up the tank and Battery thanks again John I appreciate your help and your videos
Either a 91 Sporty1200 or a newer wide glide, The WG it seems has a puter that will run battery down if bike is not used in a few weeks. The battery started to go like 25 months after I bought the bike as the red electrical systems lamp started coming on quite often even though everything was working right, once the new battery went in, that light hasn't come on again.
Cool, didn't know about he clutch plates , oil drain down, of course I never let the bike set for a long time . Ride all year long in Florida. Great tips, thanks man.

A trickle charger is fine but there are various reasons why some can’t use one.
Went for a ride, left the key in the on position. 3 Hours later I came out looking for my keys. Worst feeling ever.
Best explanation I have heard. When I got my bike, they told me what to do but not the why. Makes perfect sense.
2017 Harley sportster 48 and this video just saved my ass from the Christmas break my bike had thank you
02’ FatBoy and I try to do most of the maintenance on her myself. Always learning new stuff even 17 years later. Thanks for the videos you make. Wish I knew more guys like yourself in my area. I’d be up for riding or picking your brain about the bikes. Thanks again for tidbits 😉

Buuuut, wanted to say thanks for explaining the oil levels, i was mystified how to drain the oil and refill to the correct level, now i'll only drain my oil at operating temp so it all drains from the tank. Likewise, i'll only check my oil (after adding the prescribed amount when refilling) when at operating temp! so thanks!!!
