You are right, Amsterdam is so much more than just the red light district and coffee shops. But that is what most people think about when mentioning Amsterdam (or The Netherlands for that matter) and therefor think anything goes. It doesn’t.
It is absolutely a place worth visiting. Just respect the people living and working there. It’s not a theme park. This could be said for all the places mentioned here, of course.

I've seen and commented on that Volker's World video. What I find quite insufferable, is that he feels sorry for the tourists ... that ARE the problem, but what about the RESIDENTS who have to cope with those thousands of uninvited guests? And in another of his videos, he mentioned the "less friendly" countries! Why should we be "friendly" towards perfect strangers?
Though, obviously, all who work in the services: hotels, taxis, restaurants, ... should be impeccably courteous and patient, which is what professionalism is about.
But, really, TOO MUCH IS TOO MUCH! I sometimes feel excluded from my own city!

most residents have no problem. its usually just a loud (often just destructive and intolerant) minority bubble which even believes this over-tourism nonsense. And everyone with brain sees also no reason to be unfriendly to tourists. This bullshit is also only from idiots who have general problems with all kind of things and artificially want complain about everything. The reality is that only some very small cities and/or certain spots can get really crowded in summer (like Mark's square in Venice, Louvre and a few spots in Paris, Amsterdam center ... or some spots like in Croatia or Spain - where usually anyway only ppl go who like it crowded. And keep in mind that what some complainers often consider as "crowded' is for ppl who know real crowds (like the old Love parades in Berlin where u sometimes literally could not move that ppl got panic) just laugh about. Lets face it, in most cases only people who like to complain and have tolerance problems complain permanently about such things. In reality there are only a few spots who have real kind of problems. And smart people dont complain about tourists who bring money, jobs, exchange and life but rather about 'crime and antisemitism/antizionism, streetgang creating' migrants (most dont do that but there are some) who even dont bring but just cost money and make everything really unsafe. THATS are real problems. not harmless tourists ...

Good lord, Lynda!!! Paris is hosting the Olympic games this summer and many nautical competitions will take place in "that canal or something" that's the River Seine. As in every major city, the rivers that they were built around get polluted!
The Seine gets particularly soiled by human waste when it rains so much that the sewage system overflows (a bit!) and, in preparation for the OG, major works have been undertaken to fix that problem. After the OG, Parisians will still be able to enjoy swimming in the Seine river, as they did up until the 1920's.
But I can assure you that we Parisians are not required to pee and poo from 9 to 10 am, 1 to 2, 5 to 7 pm and not at all through the night or during the weekend!
Here (on YT), for you to get the full picture: "Testing the water: How Paris is preparing the Seine for Olympics" - TODAY, and "Olympic cleanup: swimming in the Seine • FRANCE 24 English"

Our municipality started a tourist campaign called “STAY AWAY”.
And I agree. Being an Amsterdammer, I avoid going to the centre nowadays. Imagine, the canal area is small and the city has not even one million citizens but we have to deal with 19 million tourists per year. Nineteen million !!!!
Honestly, I am fed up with it. They took my city away from me 😢

It seems like a lot of the overtourism is in the south of Europe, aside from Amsterdam (and arguably, Paris). Eastern Europe (aside from Prague) and northern Europe (again, aside from Amsterdam) tends to get less tourism.

@@markwolstenholme3354 Sure, although I can understand why the locals might get a bit fed up if they have millions of tourists flooding their cities and driving up prices.
I live in Norway and we don't have that issue. Usually, the tourists here tend to go to a few places like Oslo or Bergen, or they see the fjords or go up north (Lofoten etc.), and it's usually not an issue, but some people have suggested that the cruise ships may be polluting the very nature that so many tourists come to see.

@@Onnarashi Yes I get what you are saying but if you open a store you want customers. Countries that thrive on tourism must oblige or close the doors. Like everything in life one can't have it both ways. I'm English/British and the UK is having to adapt to a growing permanent population, a small Island naition is having to adapt. Many people are troubled by the changes, should we close the doors? (Not talking about illegal issues) I remember very clearly in the 1980's I was on holiday in Ibiza and a woman living in a small house in old Ibiza town was surrounded by bars and tourists, she was struggling to cope but also making a living from the tourists, it's hard to draw a balance.
My nephew was conceived in Ireland by my English sister and a French man, was born in England given a Welsh name and now lives in Australia with his Finnish girlfriend 🤣🤣.
Love and best wishes to you and all.

@@markwolstenholme3354 Obviously, tourism is a huge boon for the economies of the countries where people want to go and leave their money. Like I said, tourism is usually not an issue from my perspective, but then I don't live in a country with a struggling economy with foreigners buying up homes and crowding the place. I think a balance needs to be struck in some cases, where people can welcome visitors but also say they want to be able to afford living, buying groceries and renting or owning a home in their own countries/local communities.
I've seen examples of "expats" (when they have money they're expats and not immigrants for some reason) travelling to countries with struggling economies, buying up homes and raising the prices for the locals. I can see how that would be upsetting for the locals. Sure, it brings in money for some people, but a lot of people are just left with a worse deal unfortunately, because there are fewer homes on the market and the ones that are left will likely go up in price.

I belive that Wolter pinpointed som issues about owertourism!
Its this, all/most europeans get five weeks of payd vacation, and they tend to take a part of as a longer vacation in July, Juny and August! All touristy places then get owercrovded by Europeans, Asians and Americans!

Actually, I just recently read in the news, that to visit Venice you need to buy a ticket. (Only 5 Euro's but still.)
Lynda, you are correct theu are pretty much north of Italy, both relatively close to the French border.
The problem with over tourism is usually; Drunk, High, Littering, not culture/language/country minded. That is the main thing. I travel way too much, but as a polyglot I try to blend in as much as is possible for me. Talk with local people, ask about cultural things / differences, go to the places locals go to, to eat, drink, dance whatever. Connecting with local people, keeping the place clean etc is very helpful and makes your trip so much more worthwhile at the same time.

i don t live in paris(i avoided it as much as possible) and dont like it much, but the things to visit there is just massive, outdoors or indoors or subterranean ( catacombs), just massive and still concentrated in a decent radius so u can walk ( well for americans: it s european walking so plan for 20 miles/day ) and or take the subway/ river boats. my kids had scooters and we were walking so they wouldn t die exhausted.

Italy and other Mediterranean coastal beaches are rocks because they're geological new. The more a beach faces more waves or has had coasts for hundreds of thousands of years, the more sandy thr beaches. Also, the more dead the water (via sunlight or molecular pollution) the clearer it is. Beautiful, yes. Living, no.
The red light district in Amsterdam is tiny and well regulated. Amsterdam was popular with English speaking tourists as a destination for stag-do's (bachelor parties) due to it only being an hour by plane but that's now shifted to Prague.

Enjoyed the vlog , Tourism and tourists are becoming an issue in the UK , mostly English people buy second homes in holiday spots or on the coast, national parks etc, driving up house prices, this is pricing local people out of buying a home in their home town , I've holidayed in Wales for 70 years, had a caravan hired a year small cottage with 4 old friends, over the years the resentment of people buying up property has in increased ,now the Welsh government is proposing to introduce a tourist tax to try to make more houses available for local people,I do see there point and I do sympathise with the situation in Wales,it's difficult for them , holiday places in England are starting to have the same problem now .❤❤.

In France too the government try to reduce the number of air BnB ... due to lack of residencies for locals. It is a great problem in France because it is the most visited country in the world ... more than 80 million visitors each year, more than the total of the population.

one has to keep in mind that it is only a small (but loud) bubble who has always problems with tourism - complainers. one has real 'overtourism' just in a few spots - and most people like more lively/crowded spots (which is also why most live in metropole areas and/or the internet variations of that (like youtube/insta/tiktok/facebook etc). people who dont like more crowded regions should just go elsewhere - most regions are not crowded. people who complain but dont use their options for their life are just intolerant complainers ...
