CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Thomas (Evan Adams) secures a ride for Victor (Adam Beach) and himself after he regales a couple of women with his storytelling abilities.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This dramatic feature was written, directed, and co-produced by Native Americans. Native American writer Sherman Alexie scripted this adaptation of his 1993 short story collection The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. Director Chris Eyre's previous short Someone Kept Saying Powwow is incorporated into the 88-minute feature. Developed at the Sundance Lab in 1995, the film was a winner of both the Audience Award and the Filmmakers' Trophy at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. In 1976, an infant survives a fire that kills his parents. In a flash forward to the present day, the infant has grown up to become the skinny, nerdy adult Thomas (Evan Adams). At Idaho's desolate Coeur d'Alene Indian reservation, the overeager youth is mostly ignored by others, including stoic athletic Victor Joseph (Adam Beach), even though it was Victor's father, alcoholic Arnold Joseph (Gary Farmer), who saved the infant Thomas' life in the fire. A drunken Arnold later abandoned his family, and Victor hasn't seen his father in a decade. When Victor learns of Arnold's death in Phoenix, Thomas offers to pay for the trip to Phoenix if he can accompany Victor. They make an odd couple since Victor is embarrassed by Thomas' geekiness. In Phoenix, they find that Arnold lived in a small trailer in the desert, and they meet Arnold's friend Suzy Song (Irene Bedard), who provides disturbing truths about Arnold that impact on Victor.

"Because all the hippies were tryin' to be Indians, anyway" xD
Rachel Desai didn't like that story. Who were hippies try a be? Wish I was there back in the hippie erria
i have to say... in 1973.. the Paiutes came to our commune in Oregon... taught us the traditional Sweatlodge... and the Peyote ceremony in one of our tipi's ... Why.... because we were whites already living in nature... they knew we were connected, ... family... and it is still that way today... only a half century later...
It is so true; just ask my dad :)
Yes 😂
@@karlabellanger8914 The hippies were all about peace and being one with nature. They smoked mamajuana and passed the blunt around like a peace pipe. They believed in sweat lodges and finding your spirit guide. A lot of Indigenous beliefs wrapped up in the hippies beliefs.
Every native has seen this before 😂😂I love Thomas 😂🤙
Thomas has such a pleasant voice l love to hear him speak...... blessings.from England
I have the movie signed by Irene bednard
Not every native 💀
Frybread Power!
I love how every one of thomas's storys has to do with Victors dad and how victor's reaction is like "oh fuck here we go"
Exactly. It's really sad when Victor finally has enough and starts bullying Thomas. Thomas voice and energy throughout this entire movie is just beautiful and amazing to watch.
"...before he proceeded to BEAT THE SHIT out of the National Guard"
LMAO!
Thats My Favorite Part 😂
"Well....I think it's a fine example of the oral tradition" LOL! I never even heard of this movie but it just happened to be on TV last night. Loved this movie.
my husband showed this movie to me. i had loved it ever since. i LOVE gary farmer. he is my favorite native actor. i love the way thomas shows unconditional love to victor. true love man
He's very nice
Gary Farmer is currently in "Reservation Dogs" on Hulu!! He's a gem! That entire series is just fantastic. I am swooning over it.
HEY VICTOR
I heard your Dad moved to Phoenix, AZ
Shut up Thomas!!!
I guess that warrior look doesn’t work everytime
hey victor i heard your dad died
I love how Thomas is pulled out of his stories, when he's done; great acting.
Outstanding movie, loved it. Filled with symbolism. The part with the car that only backed up was right on the money.
all the rez rockets
Transmission was no good.
This movie is so underrated
Canadian Gem
@@franknberry333 pretty sure it was shot in Idaho
@@spectralv709 Yeah you're right. I Just watched it again today and I realized that , but on Wikipedia it's listed as an American / Canadian production ...Adam Beach, Evan Adams, Gary Farmer and Tantoo Cardinal are all very talented Canadian actors

I Love Native American Culture Man
Mexicans are Native . From the tip of Alaska to the bottom of South America , you are all related . You are all Beautiful People. Indigenous People. Be proud !!
Asenoganeen
You were native at one point in your blood line..unless you those rare never mixed throughout centuries spaniards
@@dgarcia8421 nope full blooded mexican brown to the bone
I’m Filipino and yes, our history has many similarities to indigenous people
I just met and talked with the director of this movie. just awesome work.
Gabriel constantin my dad is friends with him, and i watched this movie 2 years ago (when i was in 6th grade), and i got to meet him too! Hes a really nice guy and he said hes happy i liked the movie
I just watched this movie for the 2nd time - the first time was more than 15yr ago when it first came out. I was impressed all over again. Great movie!
Never get tired of this movie. I need to watch it again..... and again.... an maybe again after that. :)
Watching this movie yet again right now. It's at the end. This is such a good movie. Great performances by all of the actors.
I think, it's a fine example..of the oral tradition...
This guy should've won an Oscar.
I love Thomas’s voice
I remember we watched this movie in 10th grade Spanish class. I walked in stoned as fuck
Anthony Palumbo so thats what getto kids do
@@hamood932 yea lol wtf does a native 90s movie have to do with spanish? History maybe, but spanish? Lol
@@tonyweaver2353 because in public schools they throw on random movies in random classes to kill time. I watched Roots in math class the last week of school
He was so stoned he thought he was in Spanish class hahaha
@@williamballard767 that made me laugh!
Sherman Alexie is by far the best poet! He's inspiring!!!! His movies are amazing
I was the only Native kid in my entire middle school and on the first day I transferred there in my reading class they were going into Native American hertiage month. My teacher said we are going to watch a movie on Native Americans and I assume it was a documentary or something.... NO, MY TEACHER FREAKING PUT THIS MOVIE IN AND I HOLLARD! I was like "I seen this movie a million times! I love this movie and so does every indian out there!" I ended up making my entire class frybread and teaching for a month of Native history... Ever since I get asked from the kids in that class to make them a batch of frybread, they even say they will pay me to make them for them! 😂💀💀
That'd be awesome. I can't imagine it happening to me when I lived in Washington because that's my reservation they're filming on so it'd be a trip lol
I cant stop watching it over n over! And watching the scenes again is so very satisfying!
Watching this in 2021 and I still love it😂
I love this movie. We watched it in 9th grade Spanish class. My teacher Mr. Flores used to show us some great movies. We also watched "La Misma Luna".
Evan Adams is by far the best thing about the movie.

The little guy who played young thomas was also just as good
Its the best movie. I could watch this movie over and over!
I can't believe I'm not the only one who watched this in high school English class. I never knew it was such a common experience.
OMG funny thing about that. Me and my friends are native, and they LOVE this movie. and then one day we got a new teacher. his name is thomas xD so now every time we talk about him, we use the accent. xD
The passenger i fell in Love for a Second..she reminded me of a old Snag..she is cute.."NEED A RIDE."
I know it's an old comment. Her name is Michelle St John, she was an amazing when she used to act. You can watch a movie of her's here on UA-cam called "Where The Spirit Lives". Watch it with a box of tissues.
This film is directed by Chris Eyre- one of the greatest living American directors in the history of film. Change my mind.
Chris Eyre was my directing instructor in film school.
Yes, he's a wonderful and passionate man.
@@damontoledo8253 Wait sir... did you and I go to the same college??? College of Santa Fe? We may have both won the same "Elephant In The Room" Award! You're a huge guy! It's a privilege, Mr. Toledo.
@@retrosmodernlife8379
Yes we did!
What a small world.
I think Victor is beautiful, and I absolutely adore Thomas.
I could listen to him all day. :))
I met Adam Beach!!!! He’s so cool!!!

his accent is so amazing 😂
Thomas Builds The Fire is my all-time favorite TV character
Saw this when it first came out. I watched lots of indie films back then. :P Was fabulous back then, and fabulous now! :)
"Thomas your so full of shit"
500th like
I Wish I Could Go Back In Time N Live In The Old Days!! I Would Love That!! :)
Thomas is as cute as he can be. He makes me smile!
This reminds me of that book: life of a part time Indian. The description is super similar except this is like when they got older.
Unless this is the movie.
Well this movie was written by Sherman Alexie who wrote the absolutely true diary of a part time Indian
This is an adaptation of a combination of "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight In Heaven" and "Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian." Both by Sherman Alexie, obv.
Omg I thought I was the only one who read that book. Great book
That book is great really funny too
@@IlaughedIcried I think it’s actually based on “What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona” also by Sherman Alexie. The characters and the story are exactly the same, except for some elements added to the film to make it feature length.
I just talked with the director of the movie today. Awesome movie.
Im native 💖i never seen this movie before now i really want to watch this😫
I purchased this movie all Native cast. Love it! I learned about fry bread.
i watched this movie soo many times, totally love it :D
"Make Love, Not War" ✌❤
Lmao love the fact that Drive went out in their car so they were driving in reverse the entire time xD Never had that happen, but the oral tradition still goes as strong as this movie, some are just not as interesting as this one
The way he tell stories tho 😂
I love this movie keep up the good work
Thomas is so pure
Outstanding film... where are more like this??? ...Frybread anyone?
I these two Native ladies! They’re such a mood/vibe lol
Sad, true
Underrated
I wonder how many times the words “Hey” and “Hector” were said in this movie
*Victor
Thank goodness Columbus wasn't trying find Turkey (the country) or otherwise we would be called turkeys.... :P
I still think it's so cool this was filmed on my rez lol I get to see how it used to look. Some places look the same tho but our rez has grown a major amount since this was filmed
@Grand Zeno this the CoeurDalene reservation at the bottom left of Idaho.
@Grand Zeno we only have like 2.5k on the rez or maybe more now but we are pretty small tribe, but successful tribe.
never seen a man with such a long hair and looking so gracious like they do. even rock stars dont fit like them.
Great movie
In middle school I told my counselor I had detention all day cus they caught me being Indian on a Tuesday but it was cus I ran on indian time and was late to every class lol
Hey Victor I love this movie

ahh! this movie is so funny!! one of my favorite parts tooo!!
Hey Victoooooor!
I have the DVD , I've only watched it 100 times . NATIVES RULE !
I love this movie
In west Virginia, "the oral family tradition" means something completely different.
I think "HEY VICTOR" beats the repetition record previously held by "Jack!" in Titanic.
so funny!! and Adam Beach, I simply adore him, such a good actor, I actually prefer him in these earlier roles. And so terribly attractive, that mouth.... cannot comment on the 'native' or 'indian' stuff though. I' m Italian...love to all.
This scene was so goddamn funny when I first saw it. This is a great movie.
It IS a great story
Awesome.
Hahah he keeps saying your full of shit
Best movie ever filmed at home on CDA rez
Fantastic movie and short story. It sucks about Alexie's behavior, but his writing is so good.
