This is my favorite album of all time. Welcome to the fandom.
Thank you! It's the most beautiful album I've heard in a long time 😭
One word to describe this album.... Perfection.
Also copyright claimed 4 songs so there might be some sections that are muted for a few seconds but you still see my heart falling in love with this band. Love y'all! Enjoy your Saturday! xoxo
really love this album
yea this is as a great album! deliverance is a great one as well. damnation is an all acoustic album (for the most part). check it out in your spare time or what not.
So jealous that you hear the band for the first time, reminds me great times. Good news is that you rediscover their song at each listening. :)) If you wanna get emotionnal, i suggest you "Faith in others".
Its not my absolute favourite album (I would rank it number 3)... but it is, in my opinion, and actual perfect album.
It warms my heart seeing you enjoying Opeth. I discovered them quite late after my favorite Band Tool and they got the spot right next to them.
They changed and put out very good albums. Also they changed everytime some more in their style. Started as a pure death metal band and then good more and more prog, also they have no growls in the latest albums. It will suprise you how the newer songs sound, but I think also in a good way.
I hear Opeth allways for different moods. The lyrics are very emotional and if i want to cry and work my mind out to be happy again i hear : Windowpane, Hope Leaves, To Bid you farewell, Burden, in my time of need
for energetic and agressiv mood i hear: Ghost of Perdition, Bleak, Blackwater Park, Heir Apparent, Demon of the Fall
For in between i can say: Sorceress, Face of Melinda, Harlequin Forest
Hope you will discover some new stuff that you like :)
You've only scratched the surface. There is nothing like Opeth, nothing. Keep going
Opeth is pretty much unparalleled. Please keep reacting to them!
Also consider reacting to an Animals as Leaders album (I suggest their most recent, Parrhesia)!
The soft singing voice in the chorus of the song "Bleak" is from Steven Wilson, the producer of the album and singer/guitarrist/songwritter from the amazing band "Porcupine Tree". Check them out if you can... Also worth it!
👍👍👍
This is the best blackwater Park reaction I've seen. Probably the best opeth reaction. Mostly because you picked up on so many of the little touches that has kept me coming back to them for the past 20 years.
I feel the exact same way about how the guttural vocals are more powerful the way he uses them sparingly, even though I love morbid angel, death, and the more typical, brutal death metal.
Please check out Still Life next. It has more of the medieval sounds and lots of acoustic guitar, and atmospheric vibes that led up to Blackwater Park.
Keep it up, enjoy opeth! They have so many albums, and each has its own amazing journey. About half of then I didn't gravitate toward in the first couple listens, but now I find myself coming back to albums I thought I didn't care for, finding new respect and inspiration.
Yeah, awesome reaction Also check out Music, cats and coffee if you haven't. Love her Opeth reactions as well.
If it wasn't edited the way it was, I'd agree..but the editing is way too jagged to be enjoyable.
cit.
"I feel the exact same way about how the guttural vocals are more powerful the way he uses them sparingly, even though I love morbid angel, death, and the more typical, brutal death metal"
U are right. This is Opeth, Aekerfeld style 🤘
NEXT UP: Opeth's "My Arms, Your Hearse" isn't just an album of songs.
It's a movie with no picture.
PREVIEW:
It's a single story that spans the entire first year of an afterlife.
It explores the steps of the grieving process from the perspective of the dead.
The story begins at a funeral in the spring, with the main character, the ghost of the deceased, realizing he has died.
In denial, he tries to return home, believing he can return to life through sheer will.
The album describes his attempts to contact the living,
especially the love he left behind, and the results he ultimately has.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ENJOYING:
Listen in its entirety, in a single sitting, from Prologue to Epilogue.
Read along with the original album lyrics,
including the poetic lyrics for the songs with no vocals recorded.
It's so refreshing to see a metal newcomer react so genuinely and passionately to a fantastic album. I'm certain their album Damnation will get you emotional too, its all acoustic/clean vocals.
Definitely check out more Opeth, they have so much to offer, Still Life, Ghost Reveries, Watershed, those albums are some of the best albums I have heard. Damnation very likely will make you cry, you will find out if you ever check that album out by Opeth
Suspiciously left out some albums after Watershed, wonder why.
@@allenvrabac4827 cuz that’s the end of Opeth’s prime lol
@@wesleyb1458 Not to me 😊
32:22 - The Drapery Falls is the first ever song I heard from Opeth as an edited 5 minute cut on a free demo CD from a European Metal magazine back in 2001. It literally faded out before the growling vocals started. (I had not heard any death metal of real growling vocals like that before then - closest was Pantera or Deicide.) So anyway, my baby brother (7 years younger than I am), we both loved this song so we downloaded the full version on that notorious app called "Napster" back before Metallica sued them, and we listened to it together for the first time in full past that fade-out bit - we both looked at each other and laughed!!!! We became hooked from then onwards!!! We literally bumped into the entire band on a sidewalk before us seeing them at their latest Perth Australia concert in 2019. Myself, my ex guitarist and my brother! We did not ask for autographs or anything, we went, "hey", nodded at them to acknowledge we recognized them and gave respect plus not hounding them. This song has a VERY special place in my heart!!!
Honestly dude if that happened to me, I might have to go somewhere and collapse from the shock and awe. I've seen them live, but...
A fantastic and gorgeous album that would really make you cry is In Absentia by Porcupine Tree. The lead singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer for Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson, actually produced Blackwater Park and sang the chorus for Bleak. Their music greatly influenced Opeth, and then Opeth inspired them to get heavier. Porcupine Tree isn’t as heavy as Opeth but their beautiful atmosphere and fantastic songwriting combined with the heavier metal stuff is unmatched.
I love both of these bands, top 2 favorites.
They have been around for 30 years so they have loads of amazing music. Keep exploring them. You won't be disappointed. If you ever have the chance, see them live. They are actually better live, believe it or not.
Kaiya, your mention of southern guitar tone made me instantly think of Mastodon, you gotta check them out. They've also just toured with Opeth recently.
You are definitely not the only one that has cried listenting to this album straight through! Incredible direction and emotion
Still Life is next! Wondering if I want to twitch stream it once we hit 10k subbies or if I just want to do a video of it. Thanks for watching!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@imaKaiya oh my gosh twitch stream would be the best place for it! I didn’t know you were on twitch please do that! And still life is an incredible journey.
@@imaKaiya what is your twitch channel called?
"Bleak" always gets me, but this album is overrated for some reason. Still Life and Ghost Reveries are Opeth's crowning achievements. Pale Communion is a personal favorite though.
I'm 10 mins in this is literally one of the best reactions I've ever watched. Everything from Opeth is amazing, you should do Ghost Reveries, or Still Life, or My Arms Your Hearse.
Btw the chorus voice in Bleak is done by both Mikael from Opeth and Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree, who produced the album. I think you also can hear Wilson on The Drapery Falls doing some harmonies.
A woman who cries listening to metal and is a D&D player....❤ I think I'm in love 😂
❤❤❤
Bravo.....Bravo....this is an amazing format that more reaction channels should follow. Opeth changes lives.
Glad you liked it! Opeth is absolutely great, they found a way to do “metal” that doesn’t confine itself to a little box and covers a full spectrum of musical textures and styles in ways you just don’t get from most bands.
The intro of The Drapery Falls is the most ethereal thing ever. Phenomenal chord progression on the acoustic all the way, on top of the electric guitars and the most magical bass line. It always hits me so hard - so beautiful!
Opeth is the truth, in my top 5 bands of all time. You can make different music, but not better. Would love to see you react to Gojira - From Mars to Sirius, and Tool - Lateralus. Those are also absolute masterpieces
BUT if you want some crazy good metal with choirs, definitely check out Tristania - Beyond the Veil. There are a lot of elements I think you'll really dig.
18:10 that instant appreciation of the deep Growl .... yes, you're a metalhead for sure ;) welcome!
The movements you do with your arms while listening to the music 😂
I remember the first time I listened to Opeth's The Leper Affinity, and I remember being as amazed as you were when I heard the clean vocal part after so much (clean) gutural singing (and he can sing with gutural voices, something that is astonishing), that was back when the album was released and it was my first Opeth album, I so can see myself reflected on your surprised expressions. Their best era starts in Still Life and kinda fades in Watershed.
You are awesome, Imakaiya! Nice reaction to one of the greatest albums of one of the greatest bands ever!!!! Subscribed!
Your one of the first reactors i see that I actually enjoy hearing their insights, you know what your saying and you listen with your emotions. thanks.
Been my favorite for a long time. Loved the review!
We need more women in the world like you.
Opeth in their prime. Personally I feel like there was a four to six album “sweet spot” for this band, and this album falls in that window. Their ability to juxtapose beauty and brutality during this period is matched by none. The one exception to that trend is Damnation, which is an album of pure beauty. I consider it one of their best.
Fewer cuts please :>
You should really do a full album listenthrough for their concept albums as well. I cannot recommend Still Life enough!
I'll be doing Still Life as a part 2! I can try and do fewer cuts in my next videos, but copyright really got me in this video. I have about 2 minutes of footage that had to be muted or trimmed even with the cuts. It's hard! But I appreciate you watching and I appreciate your comment!
still life sucks, do ghost reveries instead, the true masterpiece, their best album ever
@@zemirukaiba
"still life sucks"
Lol. Well, I suppose there's no IQ test for using the Internet.
I have a really hard time watching this because of the cuts and the up/down in volume. It's music you cant just throw it around like that. Other than that good thoughts and reaction!
@@zemirukaiba Imagine hearing Serenity Painted Death and thinking that it sucks
lol as expected great reaction and analysis. don't hold back the tears let them flow we love to see it 🥲
This was amazing. It would be so cool to see more and more prog on this channel 🤘
"Still Life" is also a masterpiece
I'm thinking I'll do a part 2 and do a full album reaction on Still Life! Thanks for watching!! 🙏
You listen to my favourite band and I love that you love them!
And one by one you mention all the stuff I'm into... Lord of the Rings, Skyrim, Game of Thrones, Assassins Creed... Found some soulmate-material in here!
Can't wait for your first listen to Ghost Reveries and Deliverance, my two personal favorite albums by Opeth.
Best wishes from Germany and a Happy New Year!
Enjoy listening to it over and over again, and in 15 years, you still will enjoy it
Fun fact, this album got 2nd place in Loudwire’s “Top 100 albums of the 21st century”
This video here just got you a subscriber. I've only been an Opeth fan for just about 10 yrs now but they changed my life. There is no other band like Opeth. None.
There is only the mighty Opeth, and that's that. Loved this reaction so much, thank you!
Just dive through their whole discography, can't go wrong with them. Still life, deliverance, damnation, ghost reveries... Must listen start to finish.
Also Tool, another band with a killer discography, Lateralus, 10,000 days.. but really just their entire discography...
Also, Black sabbath (early years with ozzy!!), Check out Black sabbath(self titled) and Paranoid...
For a round the world recommendations: Australia - Karnivool, Israel - Orphaned land (specifically the album Mabool!!), Ukraine - Jinjer...
Back to USA, check out Kyuss.. and Melvins.. if you haven't..
Love the deep dive style, totally fell to the memory of my younger self first listen to this album some 15 years ago..
France - Gojira, Czech republic - Obscure Sphinx, Switzerland - Zeal & Ardor, Norway - Leprous, Kazakhstan - Dimash, Italy - Fleshgod Apocalypse, Mongolia - The HU
This is kinda fun actually, but there are countries with too many choices
@@hroj yep, that's why i stopped, so many suggestions... So many great bands and great songs..
🔥🔥❤Opeth❤🔥🔥
I'm so happy to find a new reaction to my favorite band.
I can't wait to hear what you have to say after I watch.
Seeing as you're now an Opeth fan, I'll leave you with a couple of directions to go to further your Opeth journey. It's a matter of question: How do you want to cry?
Best Story Album: Still Life
Right up your alley musically: Ghost Reveries
Cheers!
"Mmmmm, jazz guitar and he fingers that shit....like butter" XD
I love your pure and honest reactions. It's cool that you picked up on all those subtle nuances throughout the album too. Great reaction!
Also, check out "Patterns in the Ivy pt.2", it is a full song with beautiful vocals that was a bonus track for this album. Then the song "Still Day Beneath the Sun" is another that was the second bonus on Blackwater Park.
Opeth is an incredibly talented band... glad you like it. :) It's great to see how receptive you are to the music. Good job.
“You’re watching me falling in love with this band”. I felt that. I remember hearing this album for the first time. As a young teenager. Changed everything.
Watching you vibing and reacting so emotionally to Opeth reminded me why I love them so much. Thanks for making me reconnect to Opeth. Blackwater Park is among their best albums, "Still Life" and "Ghost Reveries" would be right up your alley, among their best as well. If you want something different from them, and take a dive into their melodical, mellow side, "Damnation" is another choice.
As a big fan of Opeth. I enjoyed watching you find the love of the wizardry that is this band. If you wish, try Ghost Reveries next. The expert mix of metal and grooves, the growls and harmonies. I would ask that you include a B-Side at the end. It was part of a special edition. The song is a cover of Deep Purple's "Soilder of Fortune." It's such a hidden gem.
Though, if you want just melodic prog. No metal guitars, no growls. Damnation is a truly beautiful album. Every song, you can watch live. As they did the album live on Lamentations.
23:40 Just to answer to your question there: Ne Obliviscaris.
You must react to them or just listen to them. Are from Australia, another pin in the map you mentioned {love the idea} but they sound like out of this world. Listening to them is like listening to the son-band of Opeth and still in time to reach a whole other level. You won't be disappointed!
PS: You just got a new subscriber. Thanks for doing full albums reactions... specially for Opeth who, just like TOOL for example, make most of the songs literally take you to the next one in freaking natural organic way. Opeth are definitely a true force of nature!
Ive only listen to the plague flowers song. Any recomendations for them?
Listen Isolation years by them
For full blown depression
This is one of my all time favorite albums. So glad you reacted to it!
One album I HIGHLY recommend checking out is Where Owls Know My Name by Rivers of Nihil. That album combines progressive rock, jazz, and death metal in the most perfect way possible. I didn't know how much I needed saxophone in metal music until I heard this album.
Oooo definitely will do a video on this band you mentioned. I am a sucker for good saxophone too. There's something about horns, choir and stringed instruments that give me chills. I am so happy that Opeth is finally on the channel. This band blew my mind and changed my life forever lol. Sounds dramatic but I seriously feel like Blackwater opened a portal to my soul and allowed me to release all these feelings I kept pent up 😂 I think I'll do a part 2 of Still Life next! Thanks for watching 🙏
@@imaKaiya yes, "Where Owls know my Name" is one of the best Death Metal records of the past Decade
@@imaKaiya and yes, more Opeth is always good! I recommend "Watershed (2008) " "Ghost Reveries (2005)", "Still Life (1999)", "My arms your hearse(1998)" or, if you want to go for a completely clean & beautiful Opeth record, "Damnation(2003)". Its part of a double album with "Deliverance" (2003) which is great aswell. Opeth has a long discography of beautiful records. Everything they did between 1998-2008 is gold, and the first two records are worth a listen aswell after you are done with the others =)
Blackwater Park was 2001 fyi
I'm digging the world map idea! And have 2 suggestions that are very Opeth-y from places that are a bit further away :p
Orphaned Land (Israel) : lots of traditional instruments along with the good old death/acoustic thing
Ne Obliviscaris (Australia): blackened prog death with an amazing violin player, lots of nuances, abstract lyrics and ambient passages but also lots of crazy heavy fast stuff
best album ever made! period!
Personally, this album is tied with My Arms Your Hearse, Damnation & Ghost Reveries as one of their greatest albums! Watershed & Morningrise come a close second. Check out 'Burden', 'To Bid You Farewell', as well as 'Black Rose Immortal'. The middle part of Black Rose Immortal has the most beautiful acoustical melody i've ever heard in ANY metal song, in my opinion!
This is a really good video! I hardly ever sit through full album playthroughs but this was great - I'm sorry about the copyright stuff and I think fewer/no cuts (as others have suggested) would be beneficial but this was super wholesome and enjoyable to watch play out. Too much to go on about Opeth and how big of a masterpiece Blackwater Park is, I'm sure this won't be the last you hear of them either way and you'll explore and learn as you go, but I will say that if you want an album to sound immaculate 20, 40, 60 years later then Steven Wilson is your guy. The only guy. Incredible.
I believe you would feel emotional with Opeth's Damnation, as you asked us about that... beautiful reaction you had!
The reaction you had to this felt like a time machine to me.
You pulled back up some feels I forgot about.
"I'm about to- Y'all..." is the best description of Opeth I've ever heard
Lmao you're hilarious dude, looking forward to more Opeth reactions.
A modern band (kind of modern, their debut was 2002) that come close to this band in terms of technical ability, variety, epic ness, beauty, emotion etc all packaged in some truly GENIUS albums, check out Mastodon. Their 2009 album Crack the Skye and their 2004 album Leviathan are both truly fuckin incredible. Mastodon will be awesome for you I think.
Another one that is similar to this and somewhat “modern” (best albums were 2010 and 2007 I think) is Agalloch. Their album Ashes Against the Grain is classic. And their album The Mantle will be right up your alley if you love this (Blackwater Park). I always thought of Agalloch as almost an American Opeth or something.
Wait until you hear harvest its ok let the tears flow its meant to make you emotional
Blackwater Perfect??
This is my all time favorite album..period.
It's artistic perfection IMHO.
I found you by accident tonight.
Subbed.
Well done.
BTW, Try Ghost Reveries and Watershed by Opeth.
If you like to cry, Ghost Reveries will do it.
OPETH are their OWN genre.
They do everything from cookiemonster deathmetal, to blues to classical to acoustic folk with 3 part melodic harmonies, sometimes ALL IN THE SAME SONG!!! 👍😍
Thanks for sharing your reaction. I listened to Opeth at the start of my metal journey for 2 minutes and didn't touch it again for 9 years. When eventually giving it a shot again I realised I'll never hear anything as magical as this album ever again. Phenomenal
Opeth is one of those bands that are fantastic in studio recordings. But hearing them live is perfection. You can not hear the difference between studio and live versions of song. You should listen to their song ”Ghost of perdition” live from Red Rock. It will blow your mind.
Red Rocks is shit the only advantage is the quality of the recording
There's nothing quite like Opeth. This is their most popular album for good reason, but they have many masterpieces under their belt. I hope you'll continue down the Opeth rabbit hole, because you'll be hooked for sure.
I wish I could relive my first time listen of this album. Thanks for letting me do that through your reaction 10/10
i found this album / band on a whim... i was 13 years old and at a tower records in seattle washington. i had a metal band tshirt on and was looking at the metal section and a worker complimented my shirt and said you should check out this new CD that just came out by a Swedish death metal band called Opeth and i just bought it because of how much he was gassing it up. Turned out to be my favorite album of all time and i've been listening to them for decades now. Opeth rules!
Blackwater Park
Ghost Reveries
Watershed (Deluxe)
I don't think it's possible to have a favorite Opeth album, but those 3 are....quintessential.
I know I'm super late to the party, but was just feeling like watching someone get wrecked by being introduced to Opeth, and this video delivers. I love to see other people that are so affected by music...everyone expresses it in different ways, but this was just really nice, and I'm so glad you chose to share it with the internet. Sucks that you have to cut so much because of copywrite and such, but still really great to just be on the journey with you. Really felt similar to when I sit people down and introduce them. Great stuff!
This album is a masterpiece. You gotta check out Still Life it's a perfect mix of brutal and beautiful lol
Great reaction and you’ve only done one album, I’ve subscribed for this journey.
As for something modern that’s come close I highly recommend veil of imagination by wilderun, one of the best albums I have ever heard and has Opeth vibes throughout, also the tide the thief & the rivers end by Caligula’s horse is also amazing.
Thanks for the content please keep them coming.
Thank you for your recommendations and for joining the metal journey! I really appreciate it. I will definitely check out your recommendations, I am super curious about this band and what other modern bands are similar in sound. I have never heard something so beautiful and dark. I have lots in store for the channel and I am excited for more metal! I'll most likely do a part 2 and part 3 of full album videos for Still Life and Ghost Reveries. Thanks for watching! :D
I will second the Wilderun suggestion, one of the few bands that has as broad an artistic scope as Opeth. Another suggestion for music along these lines: Back to Times of Splendor by Disillusion.
Looking forward to Still Life and the rest. Really enjoyed this video despite your copyright problems. Hope you've found an easy way to skirt them; good luck!
This is the so-called OPETH style, the only band in the world, recognizable for this "own" musical style. Of course, there were and still are bands that you won't confuse with any other... Led Z., Pink F., and others.
Opeth is my favorite of all time.
btw
these tiny musical melismas of Opeth, these "interpolations" in the key create this extraordinary atmosphere.
There's another part to Patterns in the Ivy, you should find it. It's simply called Patterns in the Ivy II. That one has vocals and is just as achingly gorgeous as the rest of Opeth's more mellow parts. Great reaction btw!
Also, if you haven't heard Isolation Years from them, it's another must-listen.
Edit: also, listen to Still Day Beneath the Sun. Listen to the whole discography for that matter, or I'll keep adding to this list until I've included all of their songs at this rate...
Nice reaction! I would say the big volume changes when you spoke got distracting. Definitely would like to see more of you, it was a cool reaction to watch. Also I recommend Agalloch, probably start with their album Pale Folklore (it's considered the go-to "new to Agalloch" album)
Thanks for watching!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻 The volume changes was part of me trying to get around copyright which I'm still trying to figure out what's the best method... Its so annoying to deal with lol. For now I'm just going to take the L and dispute the claims so the videos arent as choppy and more enjoyable to watch. This band was amazing though and I am definitely going to do more videos of Opeth. This will be one of the only bands where I do full album reactions for their entire discography. I feel like any other way is an injustice lol. Welcome to the channel I'm glad you're here :D
Top 50th greatest Heavy Metal album ever made. 1st heard of Opeth while getting a tattoo and have been hooked ever since. Musically and vocally gifted.
Hey Kaiya, amazing reaction as always, I don't know if there's a point of me recommending anything cause I'm too late to the party, but usually there's a formula where if you like Opeth you like this band called Katatonia. Their album 'The Great Cold Distance' is phenomenal and the band members have collaborated with opeth in other projects. I will say that if you ever do a listen through you might need to bring a box of tissues cause it's definitely gonna make you cry, no gutturals in their music only cleans too. Thanks for the good times!
Someone who cries at the very first Opeth song they hear is an awesome person.
oh damn you're almost doing it on the second song
Credit also goes to Steven Wilson who produced, engineered and mixed this album and their next few. He's a brilliant musician in his own rite. He sings and can play pretty much every instrument. He also contributed backing vocals, guitar and keyboards to those albums.
Check out his main band, Porcupine Tree. They're not metal, but still amazing. More along the lines of progressive rock. The albums "In Absentia" and "Fear of a Blank Planet" are great to start with because that's where they added more heavy elements to their sound.
I think the reason so many good artists come out of Scandinavia is because it’s so damn cold in the winter that you have no choice but to stay inside most of the day if you’re a kid and just perfect your craft on an instrument
Loved the reaction, keep them coming! Excited that you commented that you're doing Still Life next, think you'll dig it.
The sheer amount of cuts are a bit jarring, hope you're not handcuffed by copyright strikes in this regard.
I dont know if you still read these but i feel the album lyrics can be summarised as such - I think it actually is a concept album and it tells a story of sexual abuse, murder and then suicide and the afterlife.
The leper affinity - he is keeping someone against their will in a coffin and sexually abusing them - "Your body is mine to avail", "Come erotic communion in its splendour", "Deafening shrieks pierced the night"
Bleak - He murders them - "Beating, Heart still beating for the cause, Feeding,Soul still feeding on the loss" - Still alive here, but obviously shes hurt. "A liquid seeps from your chest" - blood. "Cold fingers mark this dying wreck", "Slight twist, shivering corpse"
Harvest - Contemplating suicide and the afterlife that awaits him if he does - "Wilted scenes for us who couldn't wait", Tones of a cold misty orchard filled with darkness
The drapery falls - Tormented with guilt and suicidal thoughts - He is seeing visions of her - ghost or hallucination - "My gleaming eye in your necklace reflects, Stare of primal regrets, You turn your back and you walk away"
Dirge for November - He comits suicide - "It sheds upon the floor, dripping into a pool", "Grant me sleep, take me under", "I fade into this tender care"
The Funeral Portrait - He is witnessing his own funeral but still talking about her and his anguish over her - he's clearly disturbed and feels like she made him like this - perhaps he loved her but she didnt and so he took her anyway and yet has resentment that she didnt love him back and that he "had to" do that - "So you wait and you savour the moment" - imagining her being happy he is dead. "Fear me when we meet" - His anger over her, "Perish at my hands". "Ruby eyes in the fog, It is me" - I am evil and im coming for you again in the afterlife
Blackwater Park - He is in a sort of limbo where they are being sorted and she goes to heaven while he goes to hell (or sorted good and bad) - Death is all around "Lepers coiled ‘neath the trees, Dying men in bewildered soliloquys", and death personified - "It is the year of death, Wielding his instruments". He watches as they are judged but his turn is still to come - "This doesn't concern me yet, Still far from the knell". Finally she is sent to heaven where he says "You're plucked to the mass, Parched with thirst for the wicked" - mass being like church mass and her exasperated at the evil she sees around her. He goes to hell when "The sun sets forever over blackwater park"
This is my take on it but it always made sense to me like this.
Oh yeah, I also think this format of listening to an album is really good. Another good album with as much acoustic guitar is Agalloch - The Mantle, kinda Opeth-esque in a way, but as much original. One of my top bands of all time:)
Definitely one of my favorite Opeth albums. And I also LOVE Death's Symbolic album. I think you might really dig Children of Bodem - Follow the Reaper. Thrash metal from Finland. Good hype album.
It feels good to see her heartwarming reaction, I used to listen to this album in my teenage years and got addicted to the band by the time, and the song lepper affinity was my favorite exactly because of the kind of sounds she mentioned, very layered and profound sound... I even learned how to play good parts of it. The musical structure they build is adimirable.
I believe you would love the album Damnation, beautiful acoustic harmonies as well.
Very nice to see you searching for the lyrics, this is the best way to go...
never apologize for "understanding" music. Those tears are just proof that you really get it. And it makes your reaction more genuine and relatable. That is what you want to see when you introduce someone to music you love. Opeth is amazing. I wouldn't hesitate to argue that they are the best band ever. It would be incredibly difficult for someone to debate against that catalog.
favorite band and my favorite album. nice.
I’m an old guy, and have been listening to Opeth since Ghost Reveries. But this is my favorite of theirs and overall probably my favorite album. It has been a joy to watch you discover Opeth and Blackwater Park. I understand the tears. Don’t hold back. Feel what you feel. Take care.
You should hear Mikael's Vocal's when he was in Bloodbath. He was on the following: Breeding Death EP, Resurrection Through Carnage, Unblessing The Purity, The Fathomless Mastery and Two Live Albums: The Wacken Carnage and Bloodbath Over Bloodstock.
Mikael plays mostly PRS Electric Guitars (he has his own signature line with them). He also plays Classic Gibson's from the 70's, Fender Strat's from the 70's, B.C. Rich Mockingbird and a Jackson RR USA. He also plays CF Martin Acoustic Guitars, Takamine 12 string and Seagull Acoustic. For Nylon String Acoustic Guitar's he plays Cedar Top Amalio Burguet 3am and Landola CT/2/w.
P.S. Also, First time I heard this record I had total goosebumps and some tear's as well so yeah that's Opeth! hehe
I'm not crying, you are :,)
Even more respect for you now, knowing you play D&D. There is a connection with Metal music and fantasy, such as lord of the rings. Super excited for a future Arch enemy reaction, let me know if you need me to suggest the songs again. Also just for your personal listening you should listen to (a long day good night), by A band called Fates warning, is a progressive metal band with clean singing, it makes me feel like I'm walking down the ocean shore the the most beautiful summer day, even though some songs are kind of somber.
You are awesome please consider to upload a unedited version where we can hear the music uninterrupted ❤️
hah patterns in the ivy splitting you between overwhelming sadness and joy, that's pretty much Opeth in a nutshell
It's an amazing album, this is the first album I listened to, and loved it, my favorite is My Arms, Your Hearse, but Still Life, is probably their best album, Blackwater Park could be their most popular, but there's something special about Still Life tho.
You should check out some Dir En Grey! Vinushka, Different Sense, Karma. They have many different styles and albums, they’re a great band from Japan!
I was like 16 when I heard this album, and it changed my life, for real!
Florida back in the day had a decent jump on the Opeth craze. Anyone who was in on the Cynic/Death scene knew something good was coming.
42:00 Hahahaha my favourite explanation of how Mikael plays
It's ok to cry! Music moves me the same way
So I stumbled across ur channel and saw how first listen to Opeth equals falling in love with them :-). And it made me sooo happy as I did the same way back. They are truly masters in their prog/melodic/black metal sound.. U cannot really put a label on them as they have been changing their style throughout the years. Blackwater park is really awesome yes as u have experienced. But there is so much more to fall in love with and feel those lovely goosebumps. And having the urge to cry due to just the depth and feelings when musicians play together in this way can give :-). You should really give Watershed a go and also Ghost Reveries.....and yes full album reviews please :-).
I have another artist I think you will really love. Not as long tracks as Opeth, but they have a sound of their own. More Metal/Djent...as some say the lovechild of Meshuggah and Depeche Mode...:-). VOLA is the name. I would love to hear what your take is on them. Keep up the good and honest reviews...I love them.
Love from Denmark.
Oh yeah...as you said....Bonafide chills...haha
Also check out the album Deadwing by Porcupine Tree. Steven Wilson (lead singer/songwriter for Porcupine Tree) helped produce Blackwater Park and a few other albums for Opeth. He also provides backing vocals for Drapery Falls, and sings with Mikael in Bleak. PT and Opeth have been my all time favourites for a long long time now.
Its ok kaiya if you weren't crying there would be something wrong ❤
Blackwater Park through Watershed is gold, with Ghost Reveries being the peak.
