    Agreed, Brian. Definitely a great first EDF! Habu STS 70mm was my first RC plane. Not first EDF, but first RC plane. Period. I learned from that one that if you don’t have a hard runway, remove the wheels and hand launch it. This 50mm Habu looks like so much more fun, and I guarantee it’s much easier to hand launch than the 70mm Habu STS. Great video. Lots of good info.

    I really like mine, and have left the gear on even though I fly on grass. You can thrust reverse before landing, and it remains stable. I probably have 50 packs through mine now, because its just so convenient to use 3S. It definitely flies better and faster without gear. I'm leaving it on because I need to practice take-offs and landings.

    Hi Brian, habu looks great buy. Just a quicky, but you mentioned that...cough, dynam could not do a scale powered plane. By pure chance I got a second hand unboxed dynam albatros last week. Cost me 120 dollars and a three hundred mile round trip drive to get it....and it was as hard to build as the dynam pt17, but it looks great, flies great ....and is 4s power. As I remember you reviewed the dynam pt17, and gave it a big thumbs up. Just saying .... Andy in uk.

      I agree - there are a few that fly well! I had the PT-17, great plane, but it was still "turdish" - in that it was very heavy, and very weakly held together. Tail wheel was lost after 0 flights - LOL - and many other issues...but a good flying plane - indeed it was!

    How do the slow flight capabilities on this compare to the original habu super sport, im asking for landing on the beach (you might remember) because I do want a bigger and faster jet but also one that I can land slow on the beach

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  Рік тому +1

      It slows down well for landings, and with thrust reverse, you can "do no wrong" as the rollout can really be cut down a ton.
      Landing on the beach shouldn't be a huge issue, if you would happen to catch a bump here or there, you might get flipped once in a while, but shouldn't be a huge issue, since this foam is pretty forgiving.

  • @burlingtonfilms
    @burlingtonfilms Рік тому +2

    Brian is it possible to cut the foam back more to fit the 2200 further back? How nose heavy is it with the 2200?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  Рік тому +1

      Sure can, if you wish. Just don't get it too thin, or you might break the plane...if you remove a lot, you might need to replace the missing foam with some Carbon Fiber or similar.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 місяці тому +1

      Okay, great question! If you're ready for 6S Habu, my honest suggestion would be to get into the 70mm F-16 or similar... possibly Viper 70mm, or even the 80mm FMS Futura or 80mm FMS BAE Hawk or Yac 70mm - any of which will be life changing, but you're RIGHT - you'll be in it maybe $500-1000 just for the first plane, battery, and charger, but then you're SET for a LOAD of new planes, that are, to be fair - WAAAAY better.
      If you have the 50mm Habu, you HAVE the 70mm STS or SS Habu - EXACTLY the same flight characteristics, and that's why it's a GREAT EDF trainer.

      Rx of your choice - bprc.me/Rx - I'd get at least AR637T but might want AR8360T for a couple choices - we'll show it in our "Unbox, Build, Radio Setup" but gotta decide if the Reflex is what you want, or if you're going to go with AS3X/SAFE.
      SMART BATTERIES
      bprc.me/SmartCharger - I'd highly suggest the S2200 - it's a LOT of cash, but it'll do everything you need for many, many planes down the road, and TWO channel means it's ready to do 2X batteries at 200Watts simultaneously - that's a lotta charger in a small, reliable package...only complaint I've had in the years of use is the stupid screen popped down, and I need to pull it apart again to fix it.
      bprc.me/SmartBattery - If you get SMART packs, they are great, but don't get 47 at a time...just get what you need for a plane...then if you want to add once you're happy with them. Keep in mind, some of these jets SUCK the life out of packs, so just use caution...if you push them too hard, you'll spend a lot of cash QUICK replacing even expensive batteries.

    Hello love your videos! I just had my first 2 flights on my Habu 50mm. I ran a Spektrum 3s 2200 100c. Didn't seem like to far into the flight, around 5 min. The motor started surging. I brought it down and throttled up and it didn't don't while I was holding it. I swapped out the battery for a brand new 3s 2200 50c and within a few minutes it was surging again so I brought it down and throttled up in my hand and it surged and then the esc started beeping? I can't find any specs or a manual for that esc...Does the lipo cutoff surge and beep at you? The dang manual the plane comes with doesn't even say. Just seems like if it is the lvc that I should've got more flight time. I did read cold weather can cause surging and it was about 40 degrees but feels colder with the wind. Again I don't know what the beeping is...What lvc is at on the esc and if it's adjuor not? Like I said there is no manual for the Avian Lite SPMXAE30A esc.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  Рік тому +1

      This is Low Voltage Cutoff. Are you a new pilot? If so, and speaking from lots of experience here, you're in the throttle too long. Gotta relax after some bursts of throttle, or you'll have a pack sag. Also, are you using SMART (I see Spektrum, but don't want to assume wrongly) If you are, you can wait a few seconds and see if the pack rebalances, which G2 are SLIGHTLY better at then G1....fyi...but both are very good. If you're only getting a 5 minute flight, you CAN probably extend your times by gliding more, but to all their own! You can stay in the throttle for most of the flight and the SMART ESC paired with SMART LIPO and it'll HELP protect from catching the thing on fire, but it won't save juice ;(
      Good luck, keep flying it like you stole it. I hope you can strike the perfect balance ;) (Pun intended - of course)

    • @sethw1230

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks for the quick response! No I've been flying since 1997. Mainly powered gliders and a Stryker. Just used to longer flight times I guess lol. I was in it most of the time. A couple slow passes and then throttle up and climb, let off and then come back down for a full throttle dive and bank. So what's the beeping on the esc? Is that also part of lvc?
      Also what do you use for expo? I have mine setup for low rate and high and expo according to the manual...Wondering if you have a better setup. Plus I have no SAFE and the AS3x doesn't work. If I hold the plane in my hand and move it around nothing moves. I guess I'm fine with it because none of my other planes had that technology and probably makes you a better pilot lol. Oh and yes the 2200mah 3s is a 100c smart.

    U want Scale, cheap & hi performance Then DIY.
    Choose platform with potential, like 50mm F18E or Mig29 kit, bcz they got proprtionally big inlets & inlets & exhaust are closeby,. Thereby less internal flow losses. Get it into expanded nozzle configuration allowing more airflow. F16, F14, F15 & even SU37 r bad choices.
    Modify kit to fit a step above rated electronics, (like BP style bigger battery,) except servos. Build simple 9g servo piano wire retracts & add flaps.

      I've had a few people ask, but I haven't tried it yet. Horizon Hobby will generally lock down the performance of these planes, so I suspect the SMART ESC will prevent use of the "wrong" size pack, BUT might be worth trying ;)

      Brian, I changed out the stock esc with the 45amp esc from the E-Flite RV-7, and now fly solely on the Spektrum G2 4S 1800mah all the way forward (throttle rate had to be reduced to 90% to prevent cut offs). Still has the unbelievable slow flight capabilities and now totally blistering high speed performance. I fly off a grass field so only hand launch/belly land. Definitely a fun and easy hop up if you have a bigger esc laying around.

    I know one company that makes relatively scale and economical. But I don't like how those planes either have no rudder or fly using only three servos 😕 Surpringly their F16 (3 servos) flies quite well, though the landing gear is basic.

      I wish we could get small planes to have ALL the features - like the UMX, now that we have power, I want to have flaps and lights on every plane...I suspect people would tolerate a higher price tag for better flying, hobby grade.

      We looked for property for 7 years. Spent several fortunes, and will be paying for it for at least 28 more years ;)
      No luck, whatsoever. This was a calculated series of many, many challenging and expensive decisions. Can't wait to share our 3-4 year plan. It's gonna be EPIC....
      Pond for float planes, boats, etc...
      60'X80'X20' Hangar and Building
      Full scale runway for planes and PPG
      Heli Pad for helis and for turning around combination trucks
      4 cross wind strips, and road through the property - This will be nice for racing cars too!
      AND MORE ;) Can't wait to share our vision!!!

    how much thrust does the 50mm provide?

      Sorry, I have no idea, but it's enough to make the plane fly. Generally, I love a 1:1 or more power to weight ratio, where the plane can have great ups, and good speed.

    Can you explain pilot fatigue please?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  Рік тому +2

      It's a feature (name) we came up with to make Throttle REVERSE 100% "right now" in stead of flipping a switch and then moving the throttle sick all the way FORWARD, which is something very irregular for landings, and might lead to crashes without thrust reverse.
      We talk about it more on the EFlite F-16 Falcon 80mm (the gray one).
      Pilot Fatigue is where a pilot had too many things going at the exact same time, and makes even a simple task very difficult. I didn't make up this definition, it comes from the fighter jet pilots who are doing about 30-40 things simultaneously in combat. We just use the terminology to help articulate this in a concise way.
      It is used to slow down the plane after touchdown. It's a game changer if you haven't tried it.

    It is really too bad they chose another Habu as the basis for this. There are a myriad of sport jet designs that are not as dated looking as the Habu that they could have tweeked and used. I could never be happy with this thing regardless of how it performed simply because it is another Habu. There are plenty of straight wing scale jets they could have used for this that may have been just as beginner friendly too. It is an unfortunate choice.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  Рік тому

      I loved the original Habu's look, but to be honest, I get where you're coming from. It's hard to argue with how good it flies though.
      I remember when I was first starting out, and loathing the "cartoony" look of some of these planes, then I very quickly realized, it's to keep weight down and make for a more enjoyable flight experience - BUTTTTT - now-a-days we have POWER like we never had before, and we can have BOTH (Draco - just one example) but then the cost component (Draco - LOL).
      I would love to see a few LIGHT weight balsa planes, like the carbon cub, in a large size, super easy to take apart, BNF, led nav and landing lights, and GOOD gear - then we can build on this. I think we need to do some plastic moldings to get the SUPER scale look, or even go with a wrapped foamy. I think there's a lot of directions we could see the hobby companies go in the future, but I think the biggest driving force, as it always has been, can they do it AND MAKE MONEY - sad but true ;( Unless some independent billionaire decides to throw away their wealth on a pet project like this, until it reaches market maturity, we will be stuck making these beauties ourselves - still a good option!
      I love the way this plane flies, and think it's a good value, but wish they could do this in another air frame too.
