The lock miter struggle is real!
I agree I have had one for 30 years and I have used only a hand full of times due to the setup issues not worth the time. see this jig in action for that purpose would be great.
When using on table saw, the kerf on blade throws of center if you are looking to cut a piece into 2 equal parts
That is true. We do have a video showing how to set up to resaw a part into two equal parts (each less than 1/2 the beginning thickness) and to cut one part that is 1/2 the original thickness (the leftover is minus the kerf)

This thing just arrived and today was my first chance to give it a try on the table saw. My half lap test, after very carefully setting the saw blade to the bottom of the half height part, still made the cut slightly short of half. The problem seems to have been in finding the high point of the blade, even though I put considerable effort into that. Any tips for keeping the slop out of that measurement? It seems that it might take some good luck to get it set just right.
With the saw unplugged, set the FitFinder parallel to the rip fence so that the blade is under the bottom of P3, not just the pointer.
Then raise the blade, turning it backward by hand until the teeth just barely scrape the bottom of P3.
@@Microjig Thanks, Morgan. That method helps sneak up on the setting. I was already doing that system, and I think my original problem had to do with the small amount of play in the fit of the three parts of the jig. If I set the Fitfinder to a small board with parallel sides, make a mark at the indicated center point, then turn it around and measure from the other edge, the marks come out about 3/64" apart. I don't know whether a fit that close poses a difficulty in hobbyist woodworking, maybe not. For me, the distancce between the two marks is about the thickness of my bandsaw blade, so I just saw exactly between them.
@@TedStJohn-vz9jr are you marking with a pencil to get this result, or with a marking knife? Marking with a pencil will always have some offset, and that is doubled when you reverse it.

@@Microjig Thank you for the reply. The 0.5mm lead in my mechanical pencil is wider than a marking knife cut, but the two marks from opposite edges were separated by a gap wider than that, and the pencil mark is easier to see. I think the play in the parts is the problem. The amount of error is not of great importance in most wood applications, and I doubt that a plastic jig with moving parts could be made much tighter. I just have to be aware of it when it would lead to a loose-fitting joint, which is the context for this remark. Thanks for your help.
Can this device be used to quickly set distance between fence and table saw blade to 1/2 thickness of workpiece??
Absolutely, lay it on it's side against the fence.
Bandsaw fence too!
Can this device be used to set depth of cut for lap joints on a radial arm saw?
It certainly can, but the reference point on the FitFinder is the underside of the pointer, so you would need to visually set the blade tooth to the sharp end of the pointer.
@@Microjig Another method to measure off the bottom of the pointer would be to clamp a small piece of wood to the bottom of the pointer 90 degrees to the pointer.
The top of the small piece of wood would now be your reference point to set the miter saw blade height to.
If I need to cut a piece in half on a bandsaw, how do I use this gauge when I have to take the cutting blade thickness into account?
Kenny, set the fitfinder on it's side against the bandsaw fence, and align the pointer to the center of the BACK of the blade. That is easier and more accurate than trying to deal with the set of the teeth.

This is an incredible tool. I would like to see a non-plastic version however. It would be great to offer a budget version as well as a premium version. Just saying!
A cast metal version would be no more accurate than this one. A machined metal version could be made more accurate, but would you be willing to spend over $100.00 for it?
@@Microjig I’D probably spend $100 on it, yes. $200, probably not.
Also, I would love to see an added feature that would allow me to gauge the distance from my shaper fence to the Apex of the cutter. I think you can use this tool for that, although the extended point might not be long enough to clear the cutter
@@Simonfrios Yes, that would depend on the cutter. But that does not need the 1/2 Gauge feature, so any height gauge with a long enough pointer could do it.
@@Simonfrios We get that. Our goal is to make good tools for reasonable prices. That dictates the manufacturing options.
Sure you can say "Lock Miter" - but can you demo it? 😁 Great product!
The center point of any lock miter bit is halfway along the angled edge between the tongue and groove.
The 1/2 Gauge can get you very close to setting this, but it will still be "by eye".
The advantage over setup blocks is that the blocks only work for stock that is EXACTLY the same thickness as the block. Which is rare.

It was unclear to me how to find the center of a dowel. The video was too quick to show the detail that was necessary. It looks like a nice tool, but I’d like to really understand how it works before I buy. Thx.

I found this tool has more hype than ability, it doesn't move smoothly and doesn't sit flat on the reference stock without a bit of pressure. I purchased this along with their specially ground lock miter bit this combination really wasn't that accurate, the ground shelf on the bit was not flat or the gauge wasn't so all this expense only got me close in the setup, not a one stepe solution as shown. A lot of money spent to produce a marginal increase of setting up a lock miter bit and will probably bring just as poor results on half lap joints. Very disappointed with Microjig they should have used precisely ground aluminium not sloppy plastic.

Mr. Hop - may I humbly ask you to bear in mind, you have a lot of people of 1. somewhat older age and 2. other countries, who thorougly enjoy your products and - generally - your videos. This one was - to me - somewhat of a disappointment. You speak so quickly as if it were a question of compressing a TV ad, and not an informative marketing video. Apart from that, I most certainly like the idea of the product, but, quite critically, what are the tolerances of this tool? That would be the deal-breaker for me. (Otherwise I have no problems working with micrometers, even if they may take more time, but time is a thing that I'm not allotted, but that I take :-).)
Sten, Morgan has moved on to do his own thing, so he is no longer doing our videos.
The good news for you is that I am now doing most of the new video stuff, and I am older like you and enjoy a bit of a slower pace.
