I just bought a 2010 Accord ex-l 2.4. During the test drive there was no check engine lights, of course Now there is, the owner stated it had the same gas in the tank for perhaps 6 months, could old/bad gas cause p0420? Thanks much.
I have found on many vehicles I worked on that this issue could be a valve cover gasket that’s allowing oil to drip into the cat. Depends on the design. But if the performance isn’t significantly bad would’ve been worth a try to clean the cat too.
I don't want to downplay your experience, but oil dripping onto the exterior of a converter will not cause converter codes. Code is for efficiency, meaning the rear o2 sensor readings are not what the computer expects, or compared to the front. The rear oscillating that I showed in essence means the cat is doing nothing. The substrate that performs the chemical reaction in the honeycomb is covered by soot or oil deposits or just burnt out, so is not performing the chemical reaction needed to "clean up" the exhaust emissions.
To clarify you mean the downstream cat or O2 sensor is bad?
