Thank you for this. I just moved into a new house and water kept piling up in the "tray", eventually tripping the blockage detector. The images of all possible condensate drain lines gave me that "light bulb" idea and I found it under a bathroom sink, rather than draining outside. I finally unclogged my system with a shopvac. Great video Kenny!

Lots of valuable info here! I suspected a problem when our AC condensation outlet emitted increasingly rusty water; of course it turned out that this was the secondary outlet, from a rusting pan. I examined the AC unit in the attic and concluded that the primary line must be clogged, but couldn't find its exit. Then I happened to watch more of this video at around 32:50, where you discuss the effects of negative pressure on a primary pipe that has been erroneously left open.
I had already noticed such an open pipe on my system, and your explanation not only saved me from cutting the piping apart but also explained the "hot attic" smell that would frequently come from the registers in the house when the system was on. I just put an $0.82 cap on this pipe. Having already poured water down it and confirmed no clog, I'm pretty confident this has fixed the problem. I doubt I would ever have discovered the pressure-differential issue, so thanks!

Thanks this was an informative video. We had an attic unit overflow pan with a float switch but it still overflowed causing walls and floors to bow and buckle!

At 12:10, I believe the horizontal section after the p-trap should be coming into a sanitary tee. Not a tee. 🙃This video is awesome! Learned a ton. Didn't realize there was so much to consider when installing a drain.

Is the installer (who is licensed and insured) responsible
for water damage caused by the failure of the missing (Never
Installed!) secondary condensation drain from the air handler to handle water
when the Primary Condensation Drain fails?
The manufacturer's installation instructions for
an air handler located in an uninsulated attic over living
space in a hot, humid, tropical environment says BOTH a
"Primary Condensation Drain and a Secondary Condensation
Drain should be installed."
Home inspectors are not responsible for events that happen after the inspection.

fantastic video. My ceiling has been leaking since they put the new ac in 5 years ago. They never capped the condensation line like you said to do in this video. I just went out and bought a cap! We'll see if it helps. I've had 4+ techs come to look at this hvac and NOT one of them mentioned that this pipe should be plugged. I'm in phoenix az. It's 105 out right now and I have NEVER seen any water come out of the condensation line. And I wonder do ALL roof top hvacs have condensation pans? I can't find mine! thanks for this great video!

How can it be anything other than just water out of the air? I can see initially maybe there’s some material coming off of the evaporator coils but after years isn’t it just pure water? Why would it need to be treated? Great video thank you.

So after watching this Very informative video. By the way thank you. Move into this house couple years ago. For a while never had any problems with the AC. I added a upgraded fan motor to draw the hot air out it’s quiet as well. And then AC stopped blowing cold air out. I checked the water drain and saw all these plumbers putty. So the upgrade their data for watching this video was put A temporary white bottle cap on there til I go to Home Depot tomorrow. Also check the slopeI don’t see any. Any suggestions would help. Also I’m going to check the Freon in the lake and the hot air out of it and make sure it’s nice in airtight. I was hearing a hissing sound. Until I unclog some of the rust that was in the line. For the water heater and AC runs into a above ground drain in the washroom. Any info would help thank you. Am I losing any Freon? I feel cold air coming out of the drain pipe is that normal?

thank you for the video. Our apartment suddenly smelled like sewage from time to time since a year ago, when hvac is off. It does not smell when cool/heat or fan is on. We have a fujitsu concealed duct 2 zone system. Is it possibly related to condensate drain line issue in this case?

Are the installation contractors responsible for
damage if the manufacturer's installation instructions were
not followed? The secondary condensate drain that should
have been installed to carry water out of the air handler
and into the emergency pan was never installed.
I would open a condensate conversation with the contractor.
Maybe I missed it, should air generally be blowing out of the cleanout when everything is running?

I have a 3.5 ton Goodman package heat pump, it is a draw through design, it only has one drain fitting. I have a trap on the unit, the outlet of the trap is about 3-4 inches below the bottom of the unit. I cannot, no matter what I do, get it to drain while the unit is running, it will only drain when the blower shuts off, then water pours from the trap for about 45 seconds or so. The unit is not pulling the water out of the trap, I've stuck my finger in the trap while it's running and the trap is full, it's not sucking air in the drain either as I've held a piece of tissue paper up to the outlet of the trap while the unit it running an there is no movement to the paper at all. Clearly either the blower is sucking water from the pan and/or the pan is overflowing as the last PM I did about 2 weeks ago I found that the blower was covered in moisture and the bottom of the air handler side of the unit had about 1/4 inch of standing water in it and the insulation on the bottom of the box was saturated. Any ideas what might be causing this? Could I have excessive negative pressure? Would the fact that the unit isn't perfectly dead on level cause this? It's slightly slopped towards the front where the drain opening on the unit is.

How do I go about finding this

Hey Ben. Was over at my sisters WNY Condo. There was a condensate line on the floor that ran into the basement sump pump. I was asked over to move some outlets around and I inadvertently stepped on it a few time. I believe this was simply 1 in or 1 1/2 in flexible PVC hose. The floor is like 2 layers of lenoleum over concrete. There was some water puddling around the hose near the lid of sump. I chaulked it up to some water squeezing out when stepped on, or maybe a crack in the hose. Next day got a a report of some water still puddling near sump cover. Being an hour away, I have to go back and put minds at ease. I was thinking maybe there's a crack, and I could just swap out line, as I found it, and try to ensure a slope to it. Is there an issue with flexible hose? I haven't found anything on using this material.
I'd use that hose. Sure. Something bigger, and better.
At around 36:00, does the secondary drain condensate trap have to have water in it, too?
