I like the way the Alcoa caps reflect the rims holes...just me.
Pro trick : you can watch series on Flixzone. Been using them for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.
@Marco Lucas yea, I've been watching on flixzone for years myself :)
@Marco Lucas Yup, been using Flixzone for since november myself =)
Alcoa helped you out. Should use Alcoa caps. Stay safe
100% agree
Cheap 😂
@@i70show what
@@shebb. Cheaper to keep the old ones then the new Alcoa ones cheap
They send you the rims and you don’t use their center caps?
I have factory Alcoa 22.5"s on my Class A RV mid 90's and they still look as good as they did 25 years ago... no checking and pitting with over 200,000 miles on them.
From a female perspective, I like the Alcoa. They are completely closed up giving a more finished look. It also looks like the Alcoa make the rims seem shinier.
no such thing as a "female" perspective
@@isaacfeinberg4623 what about from a females perspective?
I like the Ford caps better too. The Alcoa one's are to Motorhomely. The MAC tool he showed you is for removing wheel seals. MAC does have a nice rubber coated tool for removing those caps.
Since we both have the same truck and same colour I would ditch the Ford caps, and go with the Alcoa which look awesome, and I am so jealous about your new wheels, my Ford garbage is corroding. And tell those dudes in the shop, to clean up all the shop rags laying around in every nook, and pick up the garbage blowing around....OMG....keep the shop clean...
It was 40mph winds. Crazy day
The Alcoa's are forged and the imported ford wheels are cast. Forged wheels are stronger and lighter.
The Ford caps take the Ford lug nuts, the Alcoa caps need the Alcoa lug nuts. I put them on my 450
last year with 10 ounce's of Counteract balancing beads. The wheels are hubcentric and being thinner
the outer dual will still catch the hub to center it. i run mine without any caps.
Thanks John Bauer
Now you can rotate the tires properly too! Very nice.
Those Alcoa wheels are awesome looking JD. That is pretty awesome of Alcoa stepping up when Ford wouldn't handle an issue with their OEM wheels that they have to know is and has been an issue. Whether the factory warranty is up or not. But then again Ram, GMC & Chevy would most likely handle it the same way and kiss it off if the truck is out of warranty. Those Alcoa's are sweet. And I would stay with the Ford center caps.
Go with the Alcoa caps!
Definitely keep the Ford Center Caps. Looks cleaner and you have that direct access to the locking hubs up front.
We know JD, you already said in the video ;)
Stay with Ford centers. Love those centers on my 2015 F450 KR.
Alcoa baby. Love it JD
Alcoa Caps, they "earned" your adver-support
I think I would run the Alcoa caps for a while, I think they will grow on you very fast.
Those are some sexy wheels ! Now you need some matching wheels for the 5th wheel.
Boar wheels for the trailer!
Wow, those are gorgeous. And they'll stay that way. Good point on the front hub access ease. I like the Alcoa rear
I want the Alcoa Black wheels for my lithium grey F450!! I love these new shoes you got, Congrats!
Picture?
@Chad Fugleberg those are called the Alcoa Durablack wheels
If you get a chance to tour the Alcoa plant and see how these rims are made, jump on it. I hauled aluminum ingots to ALCOA a few times and it’s a fascinating process to see happen. Watched the old tube type TVs being glass welded up too, no more of that going on though.
I like the Ford hub caps.
That's a hard choice but the factory look is what I would run.
Congrats! Enjoy your new wheels!
I like the Ford King Ranch centers. On my F350 I ordered the 2WD center hub for the front wheel and installed on my 4WD truck so it would have the King Ranch logo in the front also instead of the access hole.
I have 450 Limited coming. Center cap will not have King Ranch Logo. I like the rear Alcoa but the front is toss up.
Very nice. I had a local tire shop damage my factory wheels trying to get the rear hub caps off my 21 F450. They ordered new set of Alcoa's to replace them. They ordered me the Alcoa's with the "mirror finish" (not the Durabright) but they are absolutely beautiful. They are mirror polished to a finish almost as shiny as the hubcaps, almost looking like they are chromed. I loved them so much I had to get the matching set for the front. I was a bit concerned with the work to maintain the mirror finish but have discovered since they are a forged wheel the aluminum is much more dense and very easy to care for and keep the mirror finish. That hubcap removal tool is nice. I use a small slide hammer and a custom hook to pop my hubcaps off.
Do you still like your mirror finish over Durabright?
@@wj2791 yes I do. They do take a bit more work especially in the winter but they are pretty easy to clean up. I picked up some good polish and a Mothers mirror ball and have them looking brand new in under an hour. I’ve only polished them twice since I installed them. The one thing I really like is that if the wheels do get a small scratch or blemish I can polish it out vs. a coated wheel which would be permanently damaged unless you stripped and re-coated the wheel.
Stay with the King Ranch center caps. That is one sweet truck my friend.
I would definitely go with the Alcoa caps
You should call Real Wheels in Gurnee, IL. They have stainless lug nut nut covers and center caps/high hats so your truck will really look like a big rig. I found not only are the Ford center caps hard to remove but they scratch the wheels. You get to see more of what you paid for with just lug nut acorns.
JD
So I have a 2018 F350 Dually platinum with the same wheel leaking problems and it’s driving my mad. So watching this video I contact them at Alcoa to try and buy at set here in Canada only to be told they don’t do then for the F350.
Just wanted to let you know.
Would have purchased had they done so.
Mentioned that I contacted them because of the video.
Nice rims jd I agree i drive a class 8 with 22.5 Alcoa's over 867,000 miles and they still look shiny
I like the Alcoa caps only issue/complaints I have with them is the removable center cap for the 4x4 lockouts they are stubborn to get snapped on correctly and easy to loose. I use 4wd on my f550 quite often and I started removing the entire lug cap to access the hubs and havent lost a center since.
Nice colab. Need to do one Chem-X on the touch less wash for the truck and RV
Definetly use the ford center caps
Definitely bright makes that ruby red pop even more looms absolutely gorgeous JD enjoy them. Good job Alcoa and the shop ofcourse 👍👏👌🙌😀💪
JD. My front Continental hybrid tires really wore badly, cupped and then individual pads started falling off. They were terrible. I spoke with several tire shops that service fleets and they said the Continentals perform very poorly on the steering axles. I went with Generals and it's like a new truck again.
My Ford dealer can't even service the 19.5s. They sent me to a comercial truck shop. Happy again.
Crazy that Continental owns General
Alcoa all the way! Sweet ride.
I saw you mention that the tech is your friend. I'm just throwing this out there so he doesn't get hurt, not to knock anyone. Likely 90%+ of the tires he deals with are standard P or LT tires and not an "All-Steel" casing tire like is used on an F450 and bigger truck (Also your new Brookstone) and he really, really, REALLY should be putting those tires in a cage when inflating them. Especially a used tire. Even if it looked fine when it came off the truck, the re-inflation of them can make them explode with little to no warning, and they will often come apart if they had been run low on pressure and then re-inflated. It's not too much of a problem with regular P or LT tires but 17.5, 19.5 and so forth should be treated the same way a 22.5-24.5 heavy truck tire is treated in regards to mounting and inflating. The only time you would not use a cage is if you have the wheel bolted on the truck and you have an air chuck with a clip on hose at least 6 feet long so you are far enough away that it doesn't take you out if it were to let go.
Good way to think. I remember watching a video of a truck tire, inside the cage, coming apart when air was being installed in the tire. The mechanic was injured but the cage was destroyed.
Use the Alcoa caps , also a word to the wise put some anti-seize on the mounting surface of the wheels or they will seize up on the steel hubs !
Given that these new Alcoa rims are much lighter, you should have a slightly better acceleration and have your brake pads last a little longer due to less momentum.
I was just about to comment this! I wonder if there will be a noticeable difference in MPG or not? The acceleration difference should be pretty noticeable there’s a reason people who race vehicles want light weight wheels! ✅✅✅
Im sure JD will let us know!
It is a f450 what do you expect the milage to change to? I do not or would not expect my f450 to have any noticeable difference in mileage.
@@ronaldpigeon4713 probably 14 to 14.5 🤧😂😂😂 Everything helps
Are there any corrosion issues associated with the new wheels? Salt? I have had on vehicles different aluminium wheels and they all corrode eventually.
Alcoa's looking good and the weight will make a great difference on wear and tear. I like the ford center caps but the alcoa's look the best, esp the rears!
If you get your truck washed at blue beacon make sure they cover those wheels. The brightener (acid) will eat through the durabright coating if they don't wash it off right away which is called flashing the wheels
I got Alcoa’s on my 97 Ford F-350 srw and love them there the factory wheels and they look awesome even for being over 20 years old Alcoa is the best definitely getting these if I get a f450’amf want to keep a own look and on mine I s use a couple thing to clean them recently I switched to chemical guys wheel cleaner and a detail brush works amazing gets the wheels looking nice a bright
I understand if you kept your Ford caps, they have the King Ranch logo on them. ;-)
I'm impressed you found a tire shop that knows what a torque wrench is!
Torquing wheels down with a torque wrench is a waste of time only time and reason you would do that is if the customer is standing on your shoulder telling you how to work makes them feel better about themselves.
@@Back_door_bandit_98 Negative ghostrider. Especially on a dually. If you just hammer them down with an impact you risk stretching the studs, which then will lead to stud failure and the wheels coming off. Proper procedure is to put the wheels on using a torque stick on your gun set to a setting specified by the torque stick manufacturer then following up with a regular torque wrench to the Ford factory spec of 165 ft-lb on a dually. They should then be checked again after 25 then 150 miles to verify that they are maintaining at least 90% of the original torque.
That’s one classy rig
I like the Ford's but your right the Alcoa caps are nice. This definitely won't help but the wheels looks beautiful!
Questions. How many miles on the truck? I also noticed they road force balanced even with centramatics. Where did they put the wheel weights? Lastly, where do you go to buy those wheels and what do they cost?
Thanks. Looks great! I did the centramatics like you suggested. Made a huge difference.
I like the Ford covers more
Put up a poll on your page for the center caps! I personally like the Alcoa caps
Thanks JD for turning us on with that S120 MAC seal removal tool as a hub cap removal tool, works great! By the way Ford/King Ranch hub caps look Way Better!
Nice new shoes !! Alcoa Durabrites should outlast the warranty, given your yearly mileage. Just avoid acid wash, steel wool or powder chemicals -they're unnecessary and will void your warranty.
I cannot wait to see what the 2022 F450 will be.
JD, it's called un-sprung weight. The lighter the mass the suspension has to control, the more responsive the suspension will be. The suspension doesn't support, generally, mass at the ends of the hubs/driveshafts. The inertia the truck has to overcome is much lighter, it's almost an exponential improvement. I use several high end wheels on various trucks/cars, the primary improvement is reducing mass. The mass goes down the cost goes up, there's no free lunch. Please tell me Alcoa will offer something in a 17/18in size for an F350 DRW.
The new wheels look beautiful JD . I like the FORD center caps . Enjoy the new wheels . Now you need matching wheels forthe 5TH wheel .
I liked the Ford covers up front Alcoa on the back.
That weight savings will be nice! Especially if it’s as significant as you were saying! You increased your payload, and although it will be minuscule, improved ride and better fuel economy!
I didn’t think I’d care for the Alcoa caps until I saw the rear one mocked up. That said, the KR caps are my preference.
I like the optional wheels and will probably look into a set for my 2019 Ram Dually!
FORD; we have a problem, we know about the problem, Oh we're sorry it is out of warranty. Nice work Ford
That's why you buy a warranty, it's like $20 and will pay itself off in no time. I had one for my 02 Ford SVT Focus, and parts for that car wasn't cheap. The engine alone was $8k..
@@philipwilliams3427 I have the ford premium extended warranty.....wheels aren't covered.
@@philipwilliams3427 Where are you getting a warranty for $20?
Ford knows this is a problem, they should solve it PERIOD.
We have a tire warranty for things like this. It cost about the same as replacing one tire (not the rim).
I’d go with the Alcoa. Mixing caps and wheels will give admirers the wrong idea that the wheels are Ford.
I know the King Ranch is emboldened on the caps but I’d stick with all Alcoa.
The Ford caps are nice, but Alcoa all the way. You should also see better fuel mileage and quicker acceleration with the lighter wheels. Incredible upgrade. 👌🏻
I like the Alcoa caps. They go with the rims better. Those rims are beautiful!
I looked up the Mac S120P and it is an automatic transmission seal remover, but it is defiantly the tool that your guys were using.
Just a seed to plant, when you go to put new rubber on the 450, check out the Michelin Defender. There are several customers that tow with their Super Duty’s and love them. Yes, I work at a Ford dealership, and I’ve told a few customers to check out your channel dealing with your wheel issue.
New caps on the rear and factory on front. I like both really.
Do not know how I missed this video, but just catching it and enjoyed it! Only thing is, is that you're going to have stop doing these upgrades.....You're putting me in more debt!! LOL!!
I prefer the look of the Ford Hub Caps...Nice wheels from Alcoa....(personally drive 2019 F450 STX 4x4- Love this truck!!)
The slow-mo of him putting the lug nuts on was pretty satisfying. I’d go with the ford front and Alcoa rear caps. Also, this is kind of funny because I just watched the Changing Lanes video where he was talking about getting new wheels because of the same problem. His looks way worse, though.
Leave the Alcoa stickers on the wheels...and go with the OE Ford caps, those are King Ranch ones...special as is the truck.
Alcoa caps look the best. Gives the rims a cleaner look.
Good choice on the caps
King Ranch Center caps!
Ford caps on front. On the rear, Alcoa cap makes the wheel appear larger and brighter but the King Ranch emblem is hard to give up.
ALCOA! The backs absolutely looks better. As for the front, having the selectable hub covered from road grime makes it nicer to turn them, when you need to. Keeps them clean.
A lot of the benefit of the Alcoa is it is a different grade of aluminum, which is closer to aircraft aluminum than stock aluminum wheels. And of course you pay for that.
I put the mirror finish Alcoa wheels on my 2017 F-450 Platinum. They are far prettier than the coated ones, but a lot more work. The Alcoa wheels are made in the U.S.A. The Ford wheels are made in China.
What is the weight difference between this setup and your old stock wheels/tires? Just be nice to know.
Alcoa hands down and I am a f350 owner and commercial driver of 50 yrs.
My F450 Wheels are covered with corrosion after a year. Definitely low quality. How much $$$$ I need these! Less unsprung weight has many advantages.
I like the Alcoa caps in the back but the stock ones in the front.
Wheels look great! Would love to see one side with Ford caps and the other side with the alcoa caps. I am leaning toward the Ford caps though.
Hey so If you like the look of the Alcoa back hub cover get a king ranch sign like on your factory one and take the Alcoa off and put the king ranch on the Alcoa back hub cover.
Factory King Ranch...hands down.
It would interesting to know the weight savings form original wheels to Alcoa wheels
FORD center caps. Hands down!
I don’t have a need for these. I just love watching the videos. I do think the ability to put any wheel anywhere would come in handy when rotating the tires. I like the look of the 10 hole better than the 8 hole. Finish durability is important too.
Yes, being able to rotate is big for the end user. I do have F350 and F450 Dually on order. Finish Durability should be better than stock Ford.
Hey J.D., I definitely think you should stick with the Ford center caps. I agree they look better than the Alcoa.
You're balancing them even though you are using centramatics?
I guess I don't rate a reply.
+1 on Alcoa wheels. I just can't believe you pay so much for a 450 & don't even get Alcoa wheels
When production costs are counted down to $0.001 or LESS that’s why you don’t get Alcoa wheels.
Generally; I am not a fan of aftermarket wheels. However in this case it is the way to go
My class 8 truck has those wheels and my wheels are original and has 523k and still look awesome when clean. I like the Ford center caps
I would go with Ford center caps they seem to match the finish of the wheel better. If you did not have the Dura-Bright coating and polish the wheels out then I would do the Alcoa
I prefer the Alcoa center caps.... Can always swap back to the King ranch if you want to.
With The lighter unsprung weight. You should feel a good difference in the handling too!
I would go with the Alcoa center caps, especially were Ford is doing nothing to remedy the issue
I'm really struggling with my 17" F350 DRW wheels doing the same thing. I really wish Alcoa would make a 17" wheel. Or an aftermarket wheel that is OEM Size that I can run my TPMS.
Try Rickson Wheels. They make 19.5” wheels for 8-lug 3/4 & 1-ton trucks.
Man I have no need for a f450 but your making a case to buy one JD beautiful!
Alcoa center caps for the win 🇺🇸
I say you about to add 37 bfgoodrich kdw off road tires😎 to give it a more aggressive look with your height.
I have a few of the wheels on my 18 350 doing the same thing, I want an upgrade but don’t want to sink that kind of cash right now so I’ll just keep on putting air in them
Alcoa caps!
I would be interested in exactly how much weight you saved by switching these wheels out.
I would do the Alcoa caps just to be different, even if the Ford caps look a little better.
I'd use the Ford King Ranch caps
Keep the Ford caps. They look beefier, and match the truck better. You got rid of the bad ford parts, keep the good ones they made right.
