He sold his soul to the devil for songwriting talent and the eternal face of a young twenty-something year old. But he traded it for the capability to write anything that was just happy without being bittersweet.
I don't really get this whole response to 8/10's. Are you guys saying that he should just give out 9s or 7s instead just for the sake of variety? It's a good score, doesn't need to be a 9 or 10 to be good fam.
***** Well its hard to define something that's 'good as one another' when it comes to art though, man. If you look at some grindcore album that got an 8 and compare it to a synthpop album that also got an 8 (two totally random examples) it's comparing apples to oranges. Some people might feel they're 'as good as one another' and others wont. But it's just a scale of how much Anthony personally liked the stuff, no one is saying this system needs to be flawless and 100% based on logical analysis. You're supposed to take it with a grain of salt. Like there's a reason he puts "y'all know this is my just my opinion, right?" in every video's description.
one of the best albums I've heard in a very long time.. i honestly can't stop playing it. its simplicity and honesty is something i can't shake. its oberst in his element. this is where he belongs. just like early bright eyes or early recordings. when he's faced with a challenge, in life particularly, he prevails. this will no doubt go down as one of my favorite albums of all time.
So what album will be Antonys AOTY, guys? Blackstar (it will be his 1st place imo, you know, because Bowie died), Swans(doubt it will be AOTY again, although it really good), Death Grips (doubt it will AOTY again, although it really good, 2/3rd place imo), Xiu Xiu (it's reaaly good but no aoty), Danny Brown (very high chances to be AOTY, or at least 2/3rd place in his list)
Interesting take on Cassadaga, I feel a little different. I feel like the production and arrangements are really impressive and I tend to think of it as their best sounding record. But I feel like it was his songwriting that was a little less impactful than normal for whatever reason.
I love this album. Lyrically, parts of it remind me of Lifted, which is my favorite Bright Eyes album and I love how stripped back and personal it is. I'm glad Conor can make great music still, since I had also been pretty disappointed by most of his recent work. Really deserves an 8.
I just moved to Omaha and found out Conner is playing here next week. It's sold out, of course. Not surprised, as it's his hometown, but I'm still sad about it.
This is an old comment but if you never decided to look more into Bright Eyes then I recommend you should listen to Lifted as well as Fevers and Mirrors
Thanks for this rec, Anthony. If you're on a lookout for new singer-songwriters, you should check out the debut album of the New Zealand artist Nadia Reid, "Listen to Formation, Look for the Signs" (she had some airplay on NPR) - her voice stuck with me, her lyrics spin tales of love, heartbreak, growing up, and life in a small town, with a Joni Mitchell vibe.

This really is a good year for me musically. Some of my favorite musicians released good or even great albums this year. P.J. Harvey, Swans, Nick Cave and now Conor Oberst. :)
I think I would classify as one of those bohemian type people that hung on Connors career dearly. I hitch hiked around Canada and played covers of a lot of his tunes and tunes from Monsters of Folk. I've loved him for awhile but got to a point where I really couldn't emotionally handle engaging in him as I wasn't going through the same motions. Ive been listening to this album a lot this week, probably about 3-4 listens front to back and am feeling very amazed by the record, if feel it shows how although he probably platued years ago that he's very capable of integrating his talent and years of making music and producing something as significant as his other works. In saying that I really enjoyed Casadaga and People's Key. I feel people lose sight of musicians when they have such an established formula for writing, maybe feel the best is behind them but Salutations/Ruminations for me displayed a Connor argueably at his best as a functioning human.
fuku! Lifted is great, I love bright eyes, minus the grainy fills. 'You will you will you will you will you will you will you will you will, you will...you will.' Greatest lyric
"...even if the song doesn't display the usual finesse that Conor brings to the guitar..." I am an unashamed Conor fanboy, and no, he doesn't usually ever have finesse. That's something so indicative of his style. That's the eternal struggle he is always grappling with. From Road to Joy on Wide Awake, It's Morning: "Well I could have been a famous singer. If I had someone else's voice." He is self-conscious and aware of his lack of skill in music, but the point is catharsis and wallowing. Also, what about the THREE Conor Oberst albums between People's Key and Upside Down Mountain? lol
For you're next interview I am highly recommending "Bucket List Project" by Saba. It literally came out just a few hours ago as of this comment and I'm listening to it currently as I'm writing this and I must say it's a damned good album, Saba has another mixtape\Ep "comfort zone" and it is also very good in my opinion but I feel like bucket list project will appeal to a much wider audience and I think you'll very much enjoy it. :)
Any word on what happened to Desaparecidos? I liked the new album and I know they were on tour but then Conor got really sick or hurt himself and they cut it short.

You should consider doing a classic review for Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
I think he's going to do a classic on Angelic 2 The Core first.
MatchBox Music lifted is so much better

Agreed, I have had a few tear stricken walks listening to bright eyes
I still find it surprising that Connor has been in music for over 20 years and yet he is like in his late 30s
and still looks like an emo twentysomething just with graying hair now
Sawbones Quad He knows how to keep the teen angst way past adolescence unlike American Football.
It is crazy. Especially after hearing his music he put out when he was like 13
