Note for newcomers: The opus number is quite misleading. This sextet was written in 1796, and not published until much later. Beethoven must have been around age 26 when he wrote this.

After IMSLP : Composed 1796, op.71 and published first time by Breitkopf & Härtel (Leipzig), 1810.

It was typical for Beethoven to deliver older unpublished works for print when he needed money but had not enough new works to sell. This explains some high opus numbers. Beethoven himself put it like this: "Noten müssen aus Nöten helfen" = Notes must help [me] out of misery.

The Czech tradition is unique and underrepresented...I think it's interesting how it resembles certain other central European clarinet playing traditions, such as in klezmer.

If this had been written by Franz Krommer it would be called a partita

Not a "must hear" work - very rare in Beethoven's output.

maybe not on a scale for the entirety of musical history but for someone interested in Beethoven himself this piece speaks volumes lol he's so goofy

I always like to hear those who respond to "goofiness"! I sit through so many classical concerts surrounded by people with straight faces and still feet when the music is demanding a physical response or at least smiles. Your comment has inspired me to re-listen from a more "goofy" perspective and this is showing me that it is, of course, a "must hear" - like everything from this multi-faceted composer.

+Melvyn Elphee lol hell yah Beethoven has such a unique goofy style especially in these early years lmao can't help but smile and facepalm when I hear it haha much respect for the legend.
