How-to Convert a Garage Heater to Propane ― Pt. 2 Fire-Up and Test

  • In this video I wire the garage heater to a temporary circuit, hook-up the thermostat wire to a thermostat (temporarily mounted on a stud on the partition wall). The gas was hooked-up in a previous video in order to get the gas lines tested for leaks and have the propane turned on by the propane company. The flue was also hooked-up in a previous video, so the unit was ready for the final test ― the manifold pressure test. In this video I get the heater up-and-running, then shut it back down again to hook up the manometer (pressure test rig). The heater was turned back on, and the pressure was reading just a smidge over 10” water column. The specifications for this heater is 10” WC, so I adjusted it to exactly 10”, and ended the test. Once completed, I plugged the test port back up, closed the cap on the adjustment screw, and she’s done! We now have heat in the woodshop!
    There are still a few details with the condensate drain, the wall thimble, as well as a few details on the brackets, but for all intents and purposes the furnace installation is complete 😊 From here, I can move ahead with the metal ceiling installation and give the heat I can now produce a place to stay. Right now, any heat I produce just goes up and out through the ridge vent 😐

    It feels soooo good to have this garage heater up-and-running! I have some structural wrap-up left to do - plumb the unit, finish up the bracketing with diagonal braces (which I will need to make), close-up the side of the unit and other piddly little things, but for all intents and purposes, the garage heater (furnace really) is done! Below is a list of some of the things used in this project:

    I'll bet you are very happy to have that behind you! Between the propane lines, the wiring, the bracketing, the conversion, and all of the testing, it must feel real good to have it work and be able to move on 😊

      It sure does feel good! I agree, there were so many things to get done before the heat, and they had to be done mostly in the cold, I thought it would never end! I have heat now though 😊

    Makes me want to install a garage heater! 😊

      Go for it! If you have any questions, just ask! It would likely be easier in most garages/post frames.

      Thanks Larry. One more video to go on the install, then it's back to the ceiling 😊

    Congratulations! I will be real interested to see how warm you can get the place with the ceiling incomplete. I know its not rated for that, but it will be interesting to find out!

      Actually, these heaters can be installed in an uninsulated shop for enough heat to 'take off the edge', and if the heat is pointing at you it's pretty warm. As things are, I believe that it will raise the temperature at least 30℉ in an hour or two, probably a lot more if run all day. Problem is that it would go through a lot of propane. Ill be running it in the next few days so we'll find out! 😊🔥🔥

    Great video Mojo! I'll bet it will be super warm once the insulating is done! With enough insulation, it takes very little to heat/cool. Your shop should be toasty warm (if you want it that way) 😊

    Thermostats in my house got batteries 🔋 in them too. Pain seems like you gotta replace them every year. Great to see it working 💪

      Thanks Patty! I figured the wort that could happen would be a big poof of flame from the unit - but all was well 😌 I figured out why they wanted me to use alkaline batteries as well, and I should have known better. Rechargeable batteries don't work well (or at all) in cold weather. 🥶

    Would it be a good idea to put a ceiling fan in so the warm air at the ceiling will get blown down?

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  Рік тому +4

      Absolutely! I plan to get fans installed at some point, but everything will be installed from the face of the ceiling so I need to figure out the lights and the fans together. Dust collectors will also go up there, so its going to be a very busy place 😮

    It requires batteries but you can hardwire it with a 24volt transformer and additional 2 wires in the thermostat wire for constant voltage
