Okay so over the last week or so I went on a rewatch of Cowboy Bebop after a few years, and its still the hardest hitting piece of media I've ever seen that never loses its stopping power. In fact, it usually gains stopping power the older you get purely because of the theme of carrying the weight of your past and still managing to move forward. And as is tradition I like to watch video essays of people to get their perspective on the show and what they take from it. Its all subjective but to see how its effected so many people in similar ways gives me comfort in a way and stumbled upon this one.
And I have to say this is one of the best videos I've seen on the show, not only that but from a man that i'd expect to have 100x the subscribers based on the quality of his upload. Not only that but on my multiple watched of the show, it's only now that I understand the idea behind his eyes. I always thought it was a purely metaphorical statement and theme but the way you explain it here makes so much sense to me. Even if its wrong and not intentional it's still my headcannon from now on. It would make sense that a mechanical eye made specifically to see whats in front of you and only that could maybe not be able to project memories and live within them. It may be stupid but I like the idea.
This was a fantastic video and I'm a big fan of your humour and the way you edit alongside your perspective on this show. I hope you seriously blow up because you definitely deserve it :)
p.s sorry for the essay i get carried away when talking about stuff i enjoy and cowboy bebop got me in that mood again to reflect and express yknow

Hey bro thank you so much for this loved reading it and totally vibe with your personality at least what I got from it through reading this you just seem like a guy I’d get along with really well I also get lost into talking about things I’m really into so I appreciate that thank you for that ! And that’s awesome that you got something new from the video that’s always great to hear from a video I made and yeah I definitely think that’s the point of the eyes the fact that it’s the cybernetic one being the present eye works to well the fact that it can like you said see only what’s in front and that it’s an eye that can’t in a way hold the sight of the past but also it just makes so much sense that a eye made of technology would be represented as the present thank you for the comment man ! Sorry about the terrible way i type online I don’t really worry about periods or commas most of the time lol so my comments can be confusing

@@InternetPitstop I'm glad you enjoyed reading my ramble, because I definitely appreciate the reply too :) And dont worry about the way you write because I relate to that way too much. It takes me 2 minutes to write a passionate, semi coherent paragraph and takes me a further 10 minutes to edit in the punctuation in an attempt to make it readable and digestable aha :D Not only did you connect to the show in a way similar to me and many others you offered me a new perspective on a part of the show I wasnt a huge fan of to make more sense at least in my head and I appreciate it a lot. Keep doing what youre doing man and hope to see more of you in the future, preferably with the subscriber count you deserve :)

Hello everyone ! I actually have reuploaded my cowboy bebop analysis video with some added changes because it came to my attention that I got some things completely wrong with my analysis of Spike. The idea that I could be possibly spreading misinformation on this show and its characters and someone could watch the vid and then possibly continue to spread that misinformation really bothered me. So I thought the best decision was to reupload it with the correct information. I'm sorry I messed up first analysis and all that yanno lol and its important to me that the video should be accurate even if that means changing and reuploading it all together. I understand a lot of you probably already saw it and this might just be a slightly altered version but I would really appreciate it if you all could check out the new upload of it to get the right info and also watching all the way through would help it not lose the same traction and views that the original had also really makes me sad to lose a bunch of your amazing comments that I loved on the original so if you can drop a comment and if not I totally understand thank you so much. This is something I saw another commentator say and I feel compelled to mention it here. In the episode "sympathy for the devil" before the kid dies he says something along the lines "Do you know the relief that you feel when you die?" Spike grabs his harmonica, throws it up in the air and pretends to shoot it "bang" and said "as if". In the end he says "bang" again meaning he now truly feels the relief of death after a never ending life.

p.s. I know this video is months old at this point, but I just found your channel and I wanna say I love it. "Leaving with Julia means escaping the past trauma for him"
So wonderfully put - so many of us probably stuck in this hazy present with minds in the past - if only that 1 thing could be put right it would mean no more pain

  • @RadarFinsR
    @RadarFinsR 2 роки тому +15

When Spike tells Faye "Forget the past it doesn't matter" because he knows what pain not being able to live in the present causes. When spike talks of his eyes one seeing the present and one seeing the past it's always been interesting to me and reminds me a lot of a Gurren Lagann quote from Kamina that is english dub only in the heavily edited Bathhouse episode "There are some things I've just got to see/All of You Bastards Put Us in Hot Water" (so it's non-canon but it fits the show so well, don't make me fight you irl) in the recap talking about how the village leader of Adai had enough fighting spirit to pilot a gunmen and defeat a beastman was proof he should have had hope instead of condemning their village to live underground with a population below 50.
"Tell me Simon, you know why people have eyes in front? it's because you have to move forward to see the landscape in the distance..." "yeah if you had eyes in back all you could see is your home town getting farther away, you can't move forward like that, if your eyes are in front, what you see in the distance keeps getting closer, that's what lets people move forward"
I think this quote really plays off the idea of being stuck in the past like the bebop crew and how those who can't forget their past are damned to longing of their homes lost to time. This is why Faye shoots the roof in an attempt to bluff to keep Spike from leaving, because the bebop crew is her future, it's truly something they all should have been doing, looking to the future to make a life for themselves instead of looking to the past as their homes dissipated into nothingness. First Jet with his ex-wife and the pocket watch frozen in time there was no place for him to return to. Just like Faye we when we look to the past we have nowhere to return to, the past is the past because it's gone, that's why it's so tragic when spike says "I'm going to find out if I'm really alive" because we all know why Spike is leaving, he's attempting to go out in a blaze of glory because now that Julia is dead, he too has no place to return to.
There's also the Dream metaphor too but I'm sure this comment is already unread-ably long so I'll just start speed running some cool notes.
There's a book/teachings called Hagakure which the author's(Yamamoto Tsunetomo) critique on Bushido, just to quickly quote the wikipedia on the topic since I'm not a great writer, describing Hagakure the wiki says:
"Written during a time when there was no officially sanctioned samurai fighting, the book grapples with the dilemma of maintaining a warrior class in the absence of war and reflects the author's nostalgia for a world that had disappeared before he was born."
    Another quick quote:
"The book records Yamamoto's views on bushido, the warrior code of the samurai. Hagakure is sometimes said to assert that bushido is really the "Way of Dying" or living as though one was already dead" in comments he also mentions Samurai having to view themselves as already dead, living in a dream.
Bushido is a concept that for the most part applies to spike, he seems to want a more honorable life than the one he had in the syndacate and he seems to have an undying loyalty to Julia he goes to die for his Lady.
In this way both spike and Vicious' lives embody to Hagakure style Bushido, as well as the show making a lot of commentary on what it means to live that way.
Source: It was revealed to me in a dream after my like 15th rewatch.

As someone with CPTSD, Spike has hit me harder than any other anime character. Maybe any character period. I've been told my entire life that I'm laid back, aloof, adaptable, even intimidating in some cases. It comes from being so used to chaos and trauma that it barely phases me in the moment. I fight disassociation on a regular basis. My laid back personality was forged by having to learn how to control my emotions to an unrealistic degree from an early age, and going through personal emergency after personal emergency as an adult. Internally, danger alarms are ringing and my mind is reminding me of past experiences. It's not a fun existence, but I do my best to get by.

Vicious didn't own Julia. He just acted like he did. Nobomoto and Watanabe said that Julia is Spike's woman and you see that in her actions. She disobeyed Vicious and went on the run to protect Spike. Julia loved Spike and Spike loved Julia more than he loved anyone on the Bebop.

Like you did with Berserk, you should absolutely breakdown the soundtrack of Cowboy Bebop at least the songs that highlight the soul of the show. There are ones on the main album that are obvious treats of the highest caliber (Tank, Rush, Cosmos, absolutely Space Lion, Memory, etc.) but there are some on lesser known albums that are so special. “On the Run” the theme of pierrot le fou is a song that incapsulates pure horror in music like Murder does in Berserk. It made that episode feel like I was a kid watching something late at night on adult swim that I was certainly not supposed to be watching. And “Goodnight Juila”. I have not and it’s my opinion unless I hear something godly elsewhere that there is no song in anime that is more emotionally beautiful and sad at the same time. The cosmic feelings of loneliness, sadness, hate, pain, reminiscence of memories fading like tears in rain, this song compiles them all and it’s not even that long. To do that in such a short time is a testament to Yoko Kanno’s skills. Definitely think about it and listen to those songs if you haven’t before. Your videos are the best and you should have much more than a million subs

Such a beautiful analysis of Spike Spiegel.....he is a tragic and iconic character trapped between the hard walls of the past and future, stuck in the present as you said. Really makes the entire perspective and approach to his character so interesting and relatable, his love for Julia and feud with Vicious really bring his character to the climax. Have never seen any content better relating to the cool man himself, great work! The perspective that Spike operates in a dream like sequence so often is quite interesting too.

6:17 Not naive at all. Just listen to the story of The Chinese Farmer. You cannot know what's "Good" or "Bad", all you can know is "Maybe". There is also the quote "Que Sera Sera". You make a great argument and I don't think you're wrong, but what I am saying is that that kind of outlook isn't a bad one...maybe.
If anything, it seems that Spike's outlook is quite healthy.
In the end, he does resolve his past :D
    Happy ending.

Cowboy Bebop, or, the tragedy of Spike Spiegle:
Julia is in way over her head with her gangster boyfriend she no longer cares for and is completely unable to live the life she wants to because of vicious. enter spike. after an initial crush, julia helps heal him after almost dying, and spike becomes obsessed, and julia develops Florence nightengale syndrome. at some point they consummate this relationship. you see Julia, lying in bed with spike, staring into oblivion. knowing that two titans are about to rip her world apart. not happy with the life either offers, fully dependent on whichever she chooses to survive. when Vicious confronts Julia, she chooses the easy path.
spike at this point has betrayed his brother, the only man he can trust with his life, and in doing so betrayed his father by leaving the family.
Vicious doesn't tell Mao, his *Father, he tried to kill Spike, Mao's *son, his own brother. the anger of being betrayed leads to the guilt of attacking his own brother in revenge. staying with the cheating woman and while Mao looks for spike slowly drives vicious mad. he feels Mao is betraying him as a son and the family as a boss for traitor that stole his woman. this leads him to killing his own father. he hates his life, he hates Mao, and he hates spike above all else for making it this way.
this is where our story really starts. Spike never went after Vicious because of SHAME. how could he try to kill his brother after HE betrayed him. but then vicious Kills their father, the father spike never got the chance to ask forgiveness. Vicious does this to force spike to come to him.
here Julia learns that spike is still alive. but she doesn't go to him, she doesn't contact him. as vicious builds his power as the head of a family and recovers from the fight, she runs away from everything.
Julia is on the run, and every day, she gets closer and closer to being captured by the syndicate. this is where she runs into Faye, and learns spike has never stopped loving Julia. out of desperation, she tries to run away with spike. not out of love, but out of survival.
this is the tragedy of spike. the man gave up everything he ever cared about, twice, for a woman that never loved him in return, and died in his arms at the hands of his own brother.

Great analysis ! I don’t think I said spike was going after vicious for Shame ? Did I ? If so my bad but I don’t think I did tho but pretty much everything else yeah spike fell hard in love with Julia to the point where he saw his present as dying with her at the very end I think the take you have that Julia never loved spike is interesting I’ve never actually heard that take but I never thought much about Julias feelings towards spike which is why I didn’t mention it in this analysis to avoid being incorrect i simply left it at to spike Julia was his other half a piece of him he needed but to me the saddest part of spike was that he decided his present was dying with Julia when the dude has great friends and loved ones with the bebop crew that he could’ve continued living besides but obviously that wasn’t what spike wanted at the end

It's been years, and after watching only the dub multiple times, I'm looking into finally watching the sub. This is easily the best Bebop video I've seen, and it was very nostalgic. Kudos for making me see many things I missed when I was younger. In terms of character analysis, there are many characters in Ashita no Joe and Legend of the Galactic Heroes that would make for very interesting and new character analysis content that hasn't been done before. I've tried myself, and those can get wilder.

This is my favorite fucking anime, bro of all time and I've watched so many shoenen animes. Like jesus, it's so impactful, so depressing. They don't draw out 200 episodes for the backstories of the characters, they get them facing their pasts and nothing is friendship based, no plot armor, just plain old depressing. I love it, especially Faye's past. She didn't have anything to come back to and that's what I loved about her. Same with Spike, Spike is fucking awesome and a tragic character, they are all tragic. This anime is fucking awesome and I recommend anyone to watch it if they want to at least be sad and tear a little. Also I love Fairy Tail, that small clip of the friendship part got me LMAO. I DIDN'T NOTICE THE PART OF THE REAL EYE THAT GOT SHOT EITHER WTF.

You've opened my eyes to the link between Spike and Vincent in the cowboy bebop movie, both of them are men who have faced near death experiences who don't truly know if they've survived their circumstances, they both refer to their circumstances as their dreams, have similar character designs, at the same time they are two different sides of the coin, spike being empathetic, often trying to minimize casualty despite at times claiming otherwise, is stuck in his past, his mind scarred by the people and the life he has lost, Vincent on the other hand has lost his past, having no prior memories, he has no regard for the lives of others, instead of living how he choses he pushes the limits of his dream by attempting to kill as many people as possible with one of the sole links to his past. They form a great dichotomy
As well as a greatly appreciated new understanding of the philosophy of the show, thanks for that too

I watched Cowboy bebop for the first time a little over a year ago. It was my first ever anime and was my #1 forever. After a little over a year of watching 68 other animes, I started questioning whether Cowboy Bebop still genuinely deserved the #1 spot. I started making a Favorite Anime Moments list and went back to Cowboy Bebop to find my favorites in that one. Immediately it reinforced my love and confidence that it was the best anime ever. The Space Lion scene, the entire finale, The Call Me Call Me scene, Faye watching her old video tapes, the church scene, this entire series is pure fucking art.
