    I just made one last week for my g’son’s girlfriend who just graduated from grade 12 secondary school. Both of them came over and I set up 3 machines in my dining room for the afternoon and they had never ever sewn before. Being 20 and 18, they caught on quite fast and before you know we almost finished that quilt on a Sunday afternoon. I used a walking foot bc of the thickness of it. Works well. Abby his g’friend did not know it was going to be for her so she was pleasantly surprised to be the recipient of it. I told them that it was very forgiving and not to worry about small details. You know the expression “it all comes out in the wash”, well it literally does,lol. Another way to avoid the thick seam intersection is to offset the blocks like brickwork and then you don’t have big bulky seams. You did a great job on your quilt Jean!

    I love it, the colors are perfect😊 It's CRAZY how much the squares shrunk! This is a great reminder to pre wash my flannel fabric before I make my quilt because I'm using cotton and minky along with the flannel

      The flannel shrinks unreal!! But for this rag quilt application, it creates a wonderful raggy effect every quickly:)

    Dear Miss Jean,
    I have not sewn in several years and found your video very helpful! I just finished a baby rag quilt for my first Grandchild Sophia :-) I loved this project and found your style delightful and educational. Thank you for all you do to help others. The video certainly helped me, gave me confidence and made me smile.

    Very pretty rag quilt. I made 4 last year, and they always turn out so nice. I used 10” precuts and one color for the back. They are so forgiving with any wrong stitching. I have found that the microfiber cloths work great for cleaning your mat off. Thanks!

    Today is my parents 51st anniversary and yesterday, as I was looking through the things I had bought for them, I was watching this video. Needless to say, you inspired me to make them a rag quilt. I didn't know it was as easy as it really is until I watched your video. The fact that I started it yesterday around 4pm and put it in the dryer around the same time today shows how easy it is. I probably spent a total of about 7 or 8 hours of work on it and it turned out beautiful.
    Please don't let any of the negative people out there stop you from doing what you love and sharing your knowledge with us. I know when I get a notification that you have posted a new video, it's like "Stop Everything!", I have to watch it RIGHT NOW!.....lol I think I read somewhere that you will be doing a log cabin in the future so I am really looking forward to that one as well as anything you show is.
    Lots of luv from NB, Canada

So far you have given me the best information! Thank you so much Jean. I have never made a rag quilt and I have only made quit tops and nothing else. Well, I guess I'm going to make a twin rag quilt for my bed and then I am going to make rag quilts for our 3 great-grandchildren and 2 for our two grandsons. I will see about making bigger ones for our oldest two grand kids. Thats a lot of work and I'm not sure if I'm up to it yet! Really enjoyed your video!

      Wonderful Claudette! That makes me so happy! This is cutting up fabric and sewing it back together...we are supposed to be enjoying that!! LOL! So what if you make a mistake? I can never figure out folks who STRIVE for ABSOLUTE perfection in ANYTHING!! Our fabric is imperfect, our machines imperfect, WE are imperfect! So we do the BEST we can endeavor to do and should be VERY proud of our accomplishments!! And NEVER compare yourselves to others...of that you can be depressed and despondent. Your work is YOUR BEST!! :)

    Jean, I found a wall hanging I must have bought 100 years ago, I decided I was going to cut my teeth on this. I can say I know why you say practice, practice. So far I have sewed my finger for the first time and I have been sewing off and on since I was fourteen I am now 73! I have broken two needles I had s walking foot but it does not fit my Bernina so I did order one that would fit. I feel like quilting is not for the faint of heart. I did try free motion not easy practice practice ! I will not give up I know I can do this. I love your videos I have applies some of your techniques to sewing. Thanks This just may not be my day LOL

      @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory  6 років тому +1

      Oh no!! You HAVE had a rotten day.....Step. Away.From.The.Machine!!! LOL!! Some days (weeks, months) are like that...we are just no in 'sync'.....I don't press on....just let the 'quilters block' run its course and go on to something else. Remember, above all, this should be fun and relaxing. Free motion quilting is hard, yes, but as you AND I say, practice practice practice and it WILL come to you! Take care of yourself!! :)

      you sound like a sweetie , Jackie , I took sewing/cooking in High School , to this day I can not remember one thing we fixed or learnt to cook, but I can remember every step of sewing seems like ,But we didn't learn Quilting , we learnt how to make clothes the old timey way a pattern by paper and 1/2 seams and we had to lay it over our fabric and trace it out mark it on our fabric then pin then cut , I was very young maybe 15 but loved that class . My Grandmother was a quilter on my Mother's side of the family but I was never around her to see her sew or make things like that. My Mother never sewed and me and my sister love too. Just wanted to say Hey and I enjoy read your comment.

    I made a rag quilt about 20 years ago...for my daughter......I used her outgrown pyjamas for a lot of the squares... Its huge, and very faded nowadays, and like you said, unbelievably heavy, but its probably the snugglliest and warmest quilt ever!! Wish I'd had snippers back then LOL x

    • @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
      @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory  7 років тому +1

      They ARE heavy, aren't they!?!?! But warm and comforting and cozy also! However did we live without the rag snippers!!! YIKES!! Our poor blistered index finger!!! :)

  • @petmomful2260
    @petmomful2260 7 років тому +3

    I made one of these, and instead of putting an X in each square, I did a very simple single line embroidery quilting design. Just did one after the other and ran those puppies thru!! Worked very well. You can also get rag dies for the Accuquilt GO in a couple of sizes. The snipped edges are already snipped for you!! This is a very nice tute, and I love the cute fabric! I saw a video by Laura, of It"s Sew Easy, where she put a thick nail file, behind her presser foot, to lift it and level it, to get over the"hump." I thought that was a great idea.

      Do you KNOW anybody who is perfect? I don't either. We should strive to do OUR BEST and be satisfied that we have done! We are creating our own works of art ~ not to be compared with others whose abilities may exceed ours ~~ if we do, we will surely be discouraged! I'm so glad you are learning a little something from watching! Thank you so much! :)

    H Jean, i’ve just watched your rag quilt video for the first time, and I’d like to say that I really like your snip you go method rather than doing all the snipping at the end because this way , we could snip for a while and sew for a while and snip for a while and sew for a while and then your hand doesn’t get as tired. Plus (of course) having the correct snips would be a lifesaver. One of these days I’m going to make one of these quilts!

    If you want to clean your cutting mat really really easy.....take a sticky roller and drag the roller while you hold the roller firmly not letting it roll around and drag and drag and drag all over the mat turning the roller by hand to a clean area and you'll be surprised how clean it gets. Let me know if you tried this method.

    This is lovely it looks wonderful. I remembered a couple of years ago when I first seen these, I had a go oh my goodness I picked the wrong fabric. I was just trying to be in a rush,🤷‍♀️ I never had any fleece what I had was more like felt, not quite felt but not ure what you call it 🙈. Well I put too many in a sandwiches, it was too thick even on a machine that goes through jeans.🤣🤣 it was just not stitching right. I did get three rows done.🤔🤔 I will try again with the correct fabric this time. 🙆‍♀️ You are correct about them scissors, they are marvellous I've got a pair, they really save your wrist. I am learning so much from you Jean. Your friendly way makes it feel so much more relaxed. Other people I have watched want this so precise to get you on point that I'm actually too scared to have a go. I fully understand it, they want you to do it right. Which is fine if you're entering competitions. When you just starting out doing quilts and you just doing it for yourself and your family you just want to get started without the worry. Practice of making the quilts will make us more perfect. Anyway I am rambling as normal. Just want to say Thank you. 😀

I’m making a quilt to fit a crib but I’ve seen there’s a difference between baby and crib size so just wondering which this is. Love your video thanks for the awesome tutorial!

      This quilt finished about 30" x 40" ~ but a standard crib mattress/quilt is 27" x 52". A youth quilt measures about 32" x 60" and then up in size. I think the smaller size is good.

    Jean,
    Cute rag quilt!!!! Ahhhhhh! Perfect for winter!
    Question: do you have an opinion on what sewing machine you love the most??
    Like, what brand, type??? I sew on a older Bernina, I enjoy vintage...but I also sew on
    A new semi-industreial Singer. It's very fast
    Great for quilting.

      I love my Brother VQ3000 Dream Weaver - it has a large throat that I can get a big quilt thru. But I am looking at the Brother PQ1500S or the Juki 2010Q for straight piecing and smaller quilting. They both are basic workhorse machines - which are relatively inexpensive. I think I would LOVE your industrial Singer!! :)

      Jean,
      If you wanted to look at pics
      Look up on Singer store.,com
      It's the Studio 16 model
      Wonderfull priced...does 1500 stitchs a minute and machine quilts , speed piecing,
      Straight stitch only. Has a nice back tack too. I've enjoyed mine.

Actually I LOVE MY SLEEP - people ask 'are you a morning or a night' person ~ I'm neither...I could sleep in till noon and be in bed by 8 oclock!! LOL!!! But in the in~between hours....I quilt!!! :) After raising 10 kids for over 30 years...it's now ME time!!! :)

I learned to rush rush rush. lol Now I am trying to slow down and enjoy my sewing and quilting and embroidery and guitar playing more. It is so hard to get out of that rushing mode. Some days I have to remind myself to relax and just enjoy the process. I am not in a hurry anymore! What a blessing. I love my sleep time as well.

    Hi ms Jean.. Luv these rag quilts! I have a question regarding the batting.. I was wondering about using felt between the layers. I was given a bunch of it and i don't know what to do with it. I tried looking here on you tube to see if anyone had used it for batting but haven't seen any mention of it. Thank you for your time.

    • @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
      @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you for liking my quilts! About that felt....not really a good choice because you can't wash it..it is more of a 'fused/glued product which doesn't hold up with washing. If you don't have batting however, you can use a lightweight flannel in between for the rag quilt sandwich.

    Hi, I have been trying to get in with all my xmas sewing, what have I been doing today!!! a baby rag quilt!!!! THAnKs! xmas might be cancelled. I am a bit of a cheat though, because of my arthritis I have a rag dye, but even with one piece of fabric I find it very heavy to turn the handle. Exhausted!! it,s all ready to put together. What I did was, I made the sandwich with the same fabric so then I did not have to check the back., What do you think ?

    • @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
      @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory  6 років тому +1

      Brilliant idea! The mixed patchwork on the back is a nice idea, but the all same fabric is much easier! Take it easy and sew when you have the energy and strength...this shouldn't be taxing ~ it should be fun! :) All the best with your rag quilt ~ but remember to check the lint traps!! :)

    • @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
      @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory  6 років тому +1

      I stack as many as my cutter would allow and then cut. Since I used all random patterns, I just pulled from a big pile of cut fabrics and put them together.

    • @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
      @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory  5 років тому

      I suppose so, but the whole idea of these rag quilts is the shrinkage and wrinkly and raggedy effect that washing AFTERWARDS gives them. The entire quilt, top, batting and backing shrink beautifully and achieve that ragged look.

      Does not take too long to dry and I saw care instructions saying it is supposed to be soaked- I ruined 2 before I saw the care instructions lol - now they are lasting longer. NOT supposed to leave in the sun...it might warp. BUT outside in the air is okay. Not direct sun. Oh, also...can use a rubber eraser to help pull fabric up out of the cut marks.

      NEVER apologize for 'dumb' questions....there are NO dumb questions!! I LOVE flannel because it 'rags' and 'frays' beautifully washing after washing and gets softer and softer, HOWEVER, you CAN certainly use regular cotton quilting fabric! You just have to wash it lots and it takes on a 'different' fraying than flannel, but one that is just as lovely:)

    How much fabric do I need for rag quilt I cannot seem to figure that out how much for a 5 different fabric rag quilt

    • @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
      @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory  4 роки тому

      You would need about 3/4 yard of each fabric if you want to start with 8 inch squares like I did (they 'shrink' down to about 6 inches when you are done washing and ragging)

  • @charlottesmith7788
    @charlottesmith7788 4 роки тому

    How do you figure how many yards of material you will need?

    • @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
      @jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory  4 роки тому

      Depending on how MANY different fabrics you choose, the amounts will be different. But say you only use TWO different fabrics...then you have to calculate how large your quilt will be (or small) and figure out how many 8" squares (which are the size you begin with in this rag quilt) you will need. Then figure how many of those squares you can get out of the two different fabrics. If you use MORE than two fabrics, then of course the amount of yardage will be less. Hope this makes sense:) I'm not great at math and figuring!!
