I'm a retired man and thought I would try this as a hobby. I watched this video and today I made a baby quilt out of flannel. It turned out really nice. This was a good way to start for a beginner. Thanks! Dennis
Rena Bartlett sorry I just seen this. I just posted a video on my page. I gave the baby quilt to my neighbor as a baby shower gift. That was four years ago. She’s had another baby since then and still uses it! I’ve made several now and really enjoy making them!
I made one of these with all flanellette...just wanted to say that the bigger you make the seams, the raggier it will be once you wash it a few times. If you only cut 1/4 inch, it won't fluff up so much. Of course, with bigger seams, you loose more fabric if you are making a big one. Also, I found that the smaller squares (6"), make it look more full. I used 8" and its fine, but it looks a little naked ! Love the Missouri Quilt tutorials !!!
O.K. Im 65 been sewing for over thirty years (only made a few comforters) didn't quilt. Too much hand work. Had children, no time. You have inspired me. this baby blanket, so easy! All the tutorials I have watched I have learned from. Especially liked the self binding baby receiving blanket. You go girl. Thank-you keep em coming!
I just love the way you have shown me that quilting isn't just the patchwork quilts my mother-in-law did. I can do these and have fun. Thank you so much.
Jenny I learn so much from you. It's nice to see someone who is left handed. I have struggled so much being a left handed person myself. I also like your relaxed attitude about not being perfect. I also like your magazines. Thanks again.
I recently made this Minkee rag quilt in the blue/white/green layer cake size with a blue sparkle flannel back - it came out great! I know that my little grandson will love it. This is my first "quilt" attempt and a good warm up for my next project. Thank you, Jenny, for your fun, inspiring, and easy to understand tutorials. :-)
excellent video and tutor!! I have had the pieces cut out for years ... put it all together and will gift it to my youngest Grand daughter for christmas! Thanks!!!
I LOVE rag quilts!! I have been saving my families old jeans for a few years now with the intention of making a rag quilt. =) I would like to include the back pockets in my quilt as well. Instead of the X in the middle I will just make a loop around the pocket to hold these particular squares together. Thank you so much for all of your tutorials!!
i am a beginner to the Rag quilt style ,i appreciate your demonstrating each step and explaining the technique as you go i have confidence now i can do this .Thank you
I really want to say THANK YOU for this wonderful, clear and interesting video. Following your instructions, I made an ADORABLE quilt for my baby granddaughter who is due in March. My daughter's theme is Beatrix Potter, Peter Rabbit so I ordered the squares for a Peter Rabbit cloth book and used them combined with the MINKY fabric you demonstrated. The back is all vanilla colored Minky and the top is the story, in order with a book square, a minky, a book square, a minky across first row. Second row, all book squares and the next row is the alternating book square, minky squares. I washed the fabric ahead of time and I DID USE cotton batting for the middle. It is ULTRA soft, absolutely gorgeous and unique and the quilt tells a story! I never would have done it were it not for you video and the introduction to MINKY fabric. You provide a great service, thanks again!
Love the rag blankets you teach!.. This is a wonder way to introduce my teen to making blankets. Saved her outgrown jeans and this is a terrific way to get her "started" on sewing! Also, the "quilting as you go" instructions are absolutely wonderful. Binding teachings, wonderful! Thank you once again! You make it so easy since you go through every single step!
I had totally forgotten this tutorial, my many jeans squares and work shirt squares are about to become useful again. Jenny your tutorials make my day. Thanks for all you and your families hard work and enthusiasm. Julie in Australia
Awesome tutorial, but invest in some spring loaded sizzors if you make several of these. I love rag quilts and tried to cut too many and got serious elbow pain! Love Jennys tutorials! I have learned so much and she makes it so much fun. Hope to visit soon.....
How did I miss this tutorial! I just got a huge piece of minky fabric and my daughter wants a quilt from it as it is her favourite colour! I was afraid to sew with it, but not now! As always thank you Jenny! Due to the pandemic and being a essential service worker! (Grocery Store) I must keep busy! I have almost completed The buildings blocks quilt! You made it easy! Stay safe and huge hugs from 🇨🇦
Loved the idea. It's fast and easy. The denim idea is wonderful. I think I would wash my denim quilt in a laundry mat. I don't want my machine being full of lint the first time it is washed. I loved your video. Will check out the stores in Sydney Australia to see what I can find to make the rag quilt.
Thank you for the visuals on this quilt. I have been collecting my kids jeans and intend to make a rag quilt out of them and I was still mapping it out in my head. I love what you did with your boys jeans which gives me the push to get started cutting.
I love making rag quilts. They are great durable quilts for kids to drag around. Also great picnic quilts. Jenny, I have a whole tote of denim cut into squares! Recycled denim is fabulous...and free :)
Jenny loved the baby quilt idea, I've seen this done in books, but it brings it to life when I watch you show how it's put together thank you once again.
Now I know what I can do with my husband's old jeans & flannel shirts. I'm so bad about keeping things to find another use for them. And now I have. Thank you & my closet thanks you lol . I love your videos. You have a talent that I'm working on trying to get. Again thank you.
Hi Jenny ~ you are an amazing teacher. Love rag quilts. I am starting a jean quilt and I think I will try the rag quilt on the back of my jean quilt before I try the Minkee. I know the Minkee is so, so soft and adorable. Thank you for sharing!
Great tutorial, as always. Love the homespun quilt. The earthy muted colours and the patterns of stripes and checks speak of a wonderful tradition and history.
Hi Jackie, thanks for the reply and good news as I have some lovely fabrics and wanted to use them, but absolutely love the rag quilt and want to give it a go, I've been dithering about which sort to make and this one just looks warm and inviting, thanks for the great video's you put on, they're a great source of inspiration for beginners like me many thanks Sandie x
I LOVE your tutorial video! As a "beginning-beginner", I really appreciate you going slowly and simply. My quilt will be all flannel, but I love the "minky" fabrics. After watching your great video, I will be (finally!) starting a baby rag quilt for my niece today.
Thank you so much! I'm planning my first rag quilt for my sister-in-law who's expecting, and the idea came to use Minky. I did a search to see if Minky would work and this came up. I had also been wondering about using Minky on one side and flannel on the other, since Minky is pretty expensive here in the UK. You answered both my questions!
Try both the Minkee by Benartex and the Cuddle by Shannon Fabrics, they have different properties which different people prefer. It actually isn't bad to work with in my experience, different, for sure, but not harder really. Try a 1/4 yard from either company and see how it goes together with cottons and such, we really like it!
i love all your videos, you make quilting so simple. thank you for taking the time. i think that people should get back to doing home crafts and sewing. thank you again. please continue making videos.
Thanks a lot for another super tutorial! I am amazed at all the varieties of quilts we can make! I’m discovering the rag quilt this morning and simply love it! 😎🌸
I'm going to give this a try - soon. I loved how you use our kids’ jeans for the backing with the idea of adding a patch or several.along the way. I love your ideas. Thank you again - always.🤗🦩
How did I miss this tutorial years ago ... I love it .. I have been trying to get inspired to make a quilt for my Friend who is retiring soon .. he loves to hunt ... so I wanted to make him a quilt for on the road ... this is perfect ... now I just have to find a lot of jeans ... Jenny did you put any batting in the middle of this one ?
You guys are my go-to for quilting advice and tutorials. I've been quilting about 8 years but recently really got back into it hot and heavy and you guys are great!! I'm learning lots of new stuff! Thank you and keep up the good work :)
Jenny, wonderful tutorial! You make everything so clear and easy to understand. I'm all revved up to make these for two nieces expecting their first babies. My questions: What weight and composition of thread do you recommend for the Minkee/flannel pairing of fabrics? Any special needle? I've never sewn with Minkee before and am looking forward to it now that you've explained what to do. Regarding the denim/homespun rag quilts: What weight thread is needed here? Some of my reclaimed denim is stretchy; can that be used in the quilt? If a person used reclaimed plaid flannel from shirts would that work with denim as well, or maybe twill? Thank you so much for all your cheerful and very welcome advice and instruction.
Jenny, I just recently found Missouri Star Quilt Company and am so excited! Your instructions are perfect for first-timers which is what I am. YOU are the cat's pajamas!! Thank you for your great videos!!
I absolutely love this tutorial. I'd love to try it. I do hope I'll be able to get some printed pieces like those you showed. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
You make quilting alot easier than I thought it would be. All of your videos are great and I have fun giving some of them a try. Thank you and keep them coming!
I really want to do a quilt like this for my great-grandson. I never had time to sew and now I'm retired and going to do it or else. I love the look of them and he will too. I want one for my bed but not sure I'd live long enough to finish it, it looks like it's very involved.
My stepdad recently passed away I am going to make one using his old shirts for my mom, thanks so much for the rag quilt idea, I had wanted to make my mom a quilt but wasn't sure how I wanted to do it. :)

Also, fold all your seams on the underside back so that it is pulled correctly by the feed dogs. If not you have to stop and check every seam to make sure it didn't curl up.
Love this! So fast, cute, cuddly...My "baby girl" got married 2 years ago; they've just purchased their first home and are moving out of the condo in one week... No excuses now, diapers, blankies, I'm gonna have so much fun :-D
Thanks for the tutorial!!!! I'm at the clipping stage of my very first ever quilt. This one is destined for a baby shower gift I can't wait to see how it turns out ^_^

I love your videos they are very helpful , I love rag quilts but I do not like the way flannel looks after a couple washes .it makes the blanket look old , any suggestions ?
I love this tutorial!! I'm working on this quilt as I type, using minky- pretty pastels in both the straight and the dimple- which arrived from MSQ the other day.. thanks Jenny!!! ♡ From Canada♡
We used a pack for the front and one for the back. A good option would be some Minky yardage for the backing, and I think we have zebra print of that in stock!
Hey maybe you or someone in the community would have some thoughts. I wanted to do a ragged quilt hoping it'd be a bit faster than blocking things out then stitching in the ditch. Here's the kicker I want to do some of the blocks embroidered in my embroidery machine. Do you think I should embroider through all layers or just the top layer? Should I still Sew an X over the embroidered sections? Looking for comments and ideas as I have 3 first cousins expecting later this year.
I'm curious to know how many blocks the Homespun/Jean quilt is? I love that reuse, recycle, reclaim thought process!! I have no less than 100 pair of jeans waiting for something to be used for!!
Jenny - if anyone can answer my question it's you! Please help. You are delightful - I love all of your tutorials! I wonder if you can answer a question. I often use "Quilters Flannel" for back of my quilts because it comes larger withes and it's a much tighter weave, brushed on both sides not like Flannelette. Since the quilters flannel is so tight, will it fray as much as the inexpensive flannelette? I was going to use two layers of flannel instead of batting.
I have a question about the larger quilt at the end with the Zebra print. Do you have the flannel on your site that you used for the backing?I found the packs on your site that you used for the front,I was wanting to get 2 of those packs so I am not sure how much of the backing I will need. I am just new to quilting and I LOVE your videos!! You have taught me SO much!!!
Oh wow! I was about to sign up to take a class on this quilt and decided to see if I could learn online. It looks so fast and easy! I cant wait to get some material and get started! Do you think it would work with old shirts as well? I also like this quilt because I have been wanting to make a blanket but dont really have the funds to invest in all of the fancy tools right now. This will work out great!
Hi Jenny, I have just ordered the Baby Talk Charm Packs and Minkee Charm Pack from MSQC. I will be making a baby quilt for friends that just adopted a precious baby. My plan was to, here & there, place the Minkee squares randomly with the Baby Talk squares and back with flannel. But, I have a question that I hope you will be able to answer for me. Since the Minkee would be mixed with the Baby Talk fabric, do you think the 2 fabrics would work together as a 'rag quilt'? Hoping you can help. Hugs!
I'm a retired man and thought I would try this as a hobby. I watched this video and today I made a baby quilt out of flannel. It turned out really nice. This was a good way to start for a beginner. Thanks! Dennis

@Darwin Idris I would suggest flixzone. You can find it by googling :)

Wow, that jean backed throw is so cool looking, maybe I will make one if I can get my hand on enough shirts
The most simplest directions I have come across. Thank you!
WOWSA! Jenny 11 years ago! So cool. I watched this in June of 2021 when Cuddle fabric was newer I think.
Jenny loved the baby quilt idea, I've seen this done in books, but it brings it to life when I watch you show how it's put together thank you once again.

Love it, love it, love it!! Thanks for all of your tutorials, they're great. I only wish I could breeze through them like you do, your so good at this.
have just finished making this quilt, and it`s adorable
@afkeyes I've been using my zigzag foot when I sew together my squares because it floats. IDK if that is the same thing or not, but it made this project a ton easier. Also, fold all your seams on the underside back so that it is pulled correctly by the feed dogs. If not you have to stop and check every seam to make sure it didn't curl up.
I was spelling it wrong. When I changed to the double "e" I found it and ordered some. Thanks for a great tutorial!! Love MSQC.
Love this! So fast, cute, cuddly...My "baby girl" got married 2 years ago; they've just purchased their first home and are moving out of the condo in one week... No excuses now, diapers, blankies, I'm gonna have so much fun :-D
Good point! Always remember that natural fabrics do shrink, while manmade fabrics do not shrink.
I love you, Jenny, you are my heroe!
From Barcelona, with love!
Thanks for the tutorial!!!! I'm at the clipping stage of my very first ever quilt. This one is destined for a baby shower gift I can't wait to see how it turns out ^_^
Jenny, thank you so much for this tutorial! I'm going to make my first ever quilt and wanted to start with some flannel and denim. Mine will not be for a baby, but for our Chihuahua's. They love covers!
Do I need to add batting to my denim quilt sandwich, or would that make it too heavy? Thank you for your wonderful tutorials, I have learned so much!
thank you for making this video! I wondered how those things were made. Now I know...and can make my own!
Good hobby!
We can't wait to see it Cristina Bilich!!!
Absolutely love your tutorials!! You make this look so easy! I think I'll add this to my list of quilts to do lol..
I love the idea of using old jeans to make a quilt. What size squares were they? Was if difficult to cut them up?
I checked my quilt shops here in St. Paul and Minneapolis and we don't have minkee charm packs yet....But I love your tutorials. Thanks.
We used a pack for the front and one for the back. A good option would be some Minky yardage for the backing, and I think we have zebra print of that in stock!
I used your tutorial to make a table topper. I LOVE IT and I LOVE your tutorials!! I'd post a pic but I don't know how. LOL
Thankyou so much for this I am a beginner and you've explained it very well . Gail from Australia
I really like the rag quilt. stuffing the middle of each square is what I did to the king size ones I made
Thanks
You forgot to show the finished rag quilt. :( Would it work if I used Minky back and cotton front for a rag quilt? I can't decide. Love your videos!

Since the quilters flannel is so tight, will it fray as much as the inexpensive flannelette? I was going to use two layers of flannel instead of batting.
Yeahoooooo
I want to see you make the denim one! Oh its perfect!!!!!
Could you use just plain cotton fabric?? You guys are great and very helpful! :)
I love the rag quilt, you are right out is a quick quilt. What does the back of your quilt look like? I'd love to see the back of one up close.
I love the way you teach! thanks
You are amazing at teaching!! I am SO going to try all of these quilts!! Wonderful ideas and EASY too!! =) Thank you!
Wow those are amazing.
Hugs!
