OMG thank you for this. Easy to follow along and understand, not a lot of unnecessary talking, and attached links.

What did you do with the gap between the brick wall and the trim where the plaster and lathe or drywall used to be?

This is awesome! Exactly what I was looking for. We bought our house a year ago and I’m trying to do updates little by little. There was a bonus room added to the side of the house where an existing fireplace was. We would love to expose the brick fireplace in that room to have a unique wall. I don’t think it has drywall (I could be wrong) but it just seems to have some kind of siding on it. I wish I could send you a picture or what I mean because I don’t know the correct terminology! But this was so helpful! Thank you for sharing! Last thing, what exactly is that brick spray by Kilz? I’ve never seen it before and we have so much brick! Would that be applicable for a brick sunroom? To kinda seal it in? Thank you for all your help!

Easiest way to see if the wall is brick is to knock on it with your fist. If it feels like your knocking a solid rock, it's probably brick and just has a thin layer of plaster over it. Typically the exterior of the house would have to be brick in order for any of the walls to be brick inside.
Kilz is the product we used. I have a link in the description, but the product listing has changed and it looks like the price isn't correct. I bought the low lustre sealer for around $30. To answer your question, yes it would work for any interior or exterior applications. For ground surfaces, just make sure to clean it really well, wait til it's dry, and roll it on for faster application.

Thanks for the video! We just started building our house right now, im planning to have an accent exposed brick wall in my living room. should i ask them to just leave one part of the wall uncemented, or it have to be cemented then do it like what you did in the video?

You’re welcome! I suppose it would make for a lot less work to just have them leave it uncemented. Since it is new construction, it probably won’t have the same aged character, but I bet it will still look fantastic! I would consult with the builder to see what he recommends, and SEND US PICTURES WHEN ITS FINISHED! We’d love to see how it turns out! 😊

But I want to know how to start and where to start it from?

      Thanks for commenting!
      1. You'll want to make sure that the wall your exposing is a brick wall
      2. Then you can either take a hammer and chisel (much slower) or pick up a hammer drill and a SDS chisel attachment (links in description)
      3. It's always a good idea to start on 1 side of the room and work your way to the other side, but that's not required. It will work just fine if you start right in the middle, as long as you know exactly where you want the exposed brick wall to start and end.
      4. If you only want to expose a portion of the wall, you could mark or tape a line from top to bottom where you want the exposed brick to end, then you could use wood trim to make a finished look at that transition.
Feel free to reach out with a private message if you'd like to give me more details on your exact project.

What if there is heaters on that wall? I’m afraid to break the wall and find surprises.

You didn't mention if this was a interior or exterior wall. Can you expose a brick wall if it's an exterior wall or would it be too cold/damp/mouldy?? I don't want my house to be cold in the winter.

This was interior, but we also have brick exterior walls exposed. The truth is, the insulation value of plaster and lath is next to nothing. You may find a slight difference in energy costs after removing plaster and lath, but we experienced very little difference. If you have brick walls, you’re home is generally about as poorly insulated as it gets. So it really comes down to your heat source in that case, not so much whether or not the brick has plaster on the inside.

@@TheRenoBros did you research the history of the brick and mortar and whether or not they contained asbestos?

I think I picked this up for $20, which would do likely 1 or 2 walls with 2 coats. Now the price may have risen a bit, but likely less than $30. Go to a Home Depot or Lowes and ask for Low-Lustre brick sealer

This small section of wall, with the right tools, only took us about 4 hours from exposing the brick to sealing it at the end!
