I came here to see if excessive K&N oil if put on the filter after cleaning it causes any issue. I got my answer. The airfilter sensor in my truck sensed oil in the air filter compartment and reduced the efficiency of the engine. It took 2 days for the service guys nail the issue. Andy you confirmed the same in your talk. I will clean it and and put less oil this time . Thanks for the help.
I hadn't seen that one by delboy man is that guy for real the more I see his recommendations the more I smile I'm really surprised that all manufacturers don't ask him to advise them on how NOT to do anything, guy is a complete numpty, a prize keep up good work andy cheers.

I have used K&N filters on a 1979 900 ss Ducati,( rather than open bell mouths) a Triton that I built in the late nineties and now my Street Triple 675R...exchanged and fitted yesterday. I've watch your take on these filters with interest, plus my own experience since the late seventies. There is much conflicting advice/information regarding original dry paper and oiled filtration on UA-cam, Regarding the new filter on the Triumph...early result is my active fuel consumption/indication ie; L/100 kilometres looks a little better. As for the increased HP, who knows... increased acceleration ? I'm inclined to agree with you ..Follow the directions.....Sometimes, believing you know best turns out to be a bad call..I know cause I've done it!! So far I've had none of the problems ie; display and/or air sensor malfunctions .Bike is running perfectly.
Great explanation Andy, cant believe some people think that foam filters etc, dont need oiling, I didnt see the original video, and due to the excellent pixelation I couldnt see the muppets face :)
My head exploded when you showed Duckboy's segment. I use K&N's Outerwears in sandy conditions. When I install the filter type you have in the Ducati I fill the little mating groove with white lithium grease. Might be overkill. Kind of a carryover from foam filters. It makes me feel better anyway.
azdesertdog I use the K&N grease that comes with some of the panel filters. K&N CNC the molds for a precision fit, as opposed to paper elements which rely on compressing the foam seal into conformity. Yes, what can I say about Delboy. He is the gift that keeps on giving lol

Great info as usual Andy, During the early to mid eighties my brother and I raced motocross sidecars. We had an XS650 Yammy, a 750 Honda K2? and a Suzuki T500. Late eighties to early nineties we went to speedway sidecar running a Suzuki GS1000. All these were different with 2 stroke and 4 stroke, 2 cylinders and 4 but we ran pod filters on each. Maintenance was top priority as we were on a tight budget and making sure the air filters were cleaned then oiled was paramount. Why anyone would suggest not to is beyond me.
Well covered Andy's Motorcycle Obsessions. Never bought a KnN but they have been on a lot of the bikes have ended up with. Just with all oiled filters it's how you wash em and treat em. Coming from trail/dirt bikes foam filters are the standard and if you don't take the time you will pay the price or the poor bastard that bought their new toy will. Oh yeah lovin the Delboy. He is the special kind of special.

Ignoring manufacturers advice - help improve your engine's breathing, why not remove the filter completely and save money! (for a while). Just like unfiltered cigarettes - what harm did they do? Lovely concise vid thank you once again.
Thanks for doing a "right" application video...there are too many videos out there where they aren't doing It right and people's MAF Sensor are going to get messed up. Cutting corners is going to cost someone in the long run. If they aren't going to do it right don't buy K&N Filters just get disposable ones.

I am in total agreement about the proper cleaning and oiling of K&N filters. I was lucky enough to be racing AMA flat track when K&Ls first came out. Back then we were for the most part using Filtron filters, an oiled foam product. good but not in the same league as K&N. Racers make the best salesmen any company can find. I had more than a few tell me, "the more dirt & dust they get on them, the better they work". While not exactly the truth, the darn things could go a complete race meet in the dustiest conditions and not clog up. Oil foam filters (Filtron)needed cleaning at least once per meet sometimes as many as after each ride.
I like and appreciate Delboy and his videos, this is one he was dead wrong about. But if memory swerves, I think this about the time he was flogging "newer and better" product. That may be why he made such a claim.
AMA Flat Track...cool. David Vizard tested K&N on a BAJA engine extensively and found that they still out flowed paper even when loaded with 1/16" of dirt. As for Delboy the fact is that he simply has no idea and I wish he would just stop. All we can hope is that a couple of the impressionable people who follow his advise get an opportunity to see the truth about him and question said advise. If people enjoy watching him, cool. All I wish is that they take what he says and does with a grain of salt. Thanks for watching, Andy

Yeah Andy and Matt have helped a huge amount of people. I didn't even know about Delboy and thought Matt at The Workshop was a hard nut so checked this Delboy out and fuck me. Could not believe some of the stuff. If your at the beginning of learning he will do you no favors. Pity he doesn't have good access to better information.

Thanks Andy. I've heard air pods aren't good in wet weather, have you found this to be true? Does oiling them stop this problem?
Thanks Andy. I recharged the pods on my -80 Honda CB750 and I overdid it applying too much oil on them. They have been dripping (slowly) for a couple of days and I was worried I messed them up or even worse damage something in the engine/carbs.
I knew I had seen a video a while back of someone talking about cleaning/recharging filters and the consequences of putting too much oil on them.
Should I clean them again and re-oil them properly this time? Or is it ok to run them now?

If it were me I would just remove them and try to mop the excess oil up with paper towels.

Hi Andy, I like to service my own bike, and would like to think I'm competent. Now my bikes out of warranty I can crack on with my own service again.
At 12000 miles I'll need to check the valve shims, out of interest what percentage of bike do you think need any adjustment?
G'day mate, I'm not entirely clear on what you are asking me. If you want to know what percentage of valves to measure, the answer is 100%. If your asking what percentage require adjustment the answer is 100% of the ones out of spec. If you're asking me what percentage usually require adjustment, that has so many possible variables that I can't answer.
Andy's Motorcycle Obsessions , thanks for the reply. What I was getting at, is in your experience would almost all bikes have worn shims, or is it very low 2 out of 10 need adjustment?
Just wondering after all the strip down, do you find most bike need nothing.(no shims replacement)
It is common to find valve clearances out of spec. People often ignore them because of the way they wear. In most cases the clearances become tight as the valve seat wears and the gap closes. This means that there is no tappet noise to indicate a problem but it leads to the valves riding and a reduction in performance and ultimately burned out valves or seats. If the bike has been serviced by a reputable workshop they would have been checking clearances and monitoring them so you would assume they would be okay, but never rely on assumptions. It is possible to have a large clearance and it can be caused by carbon buildup on the neck of the valve causing it not to seat properly or wear on the cam lobe as a result of poor oil circulation or a lack of regular oil changes, shims are as hard as a cats head and don’t normally wear thin. If the bike is running well measure the clearances at the recommended intervals and only invest in tools and shims if you need to make an adjustment. Hope this helps, Andy

Any idea what the shelf life of the K&N oil is? I've used it twice on my K&N and have some left which has been in it's container for about 2 years. Is it still good?

years ago my father used paraffin oil to degrease the filters then rinsed and recharged them with engine oil. Do you know if this is safe or advisable

Last spring when I took my breather box cover off I found that a chipmunk had decided that those filter pleats were a great place to store maple seeds, so my question is, How long to you have to let that solvent sit on the filter to dissolve a maple seed? J/K, great tutorial.
The recommend 80k between cleaning? That seems pretty long, you recommend every 10k, that's about once a season here. Nice spring maintenance routine.
Perhaps the installation of a cat between the squirrel and the airbox is the best strategy?
I put a bunch of mothballs around the door to my MC garage to try and discourage the buggers coming in. Cheaper than feeding a cat.

Buy the K&N Filter Cleaning Kit -- follow the Manufacturer's instructions EXACTLY, and enjoy maximum performance from your engine.

Be CAREFUL that you don't put too much oil on the pleats.

Just used dawn dish soap it cleans the dirt and oil way better than the k&n products it self..
