    People seem to hate on how kh3 sora was a lot more friendly towards the org members but i thinks thats because in DDD he learns that the organizations nobodies have hearts and that they can become people again. While in kh2 he was told they werent supposed to exist as if they were like heartless. And it doesnt help that they kept taunting him about the fate of riku and the kidnapping if kairi.

      @@kyl0ooart Not necessarily! He killed almost all of the original Organization members with his own two hands. He chose to destroy Larxene, for example, because she was a sadistic manipulator that tried to kill him and hurt Namine. And showed no reaction or remorse when she died (same with Marluxia).
      He also _attempted_ to kill Roxas during their duel for no other reason than because he was attacked. Sora has always been characterized as ruthless toward his enemies (especially in the earlier games). He isn't so forgiving that he'd sympathize with everyone just because they're people. As was said in KH2:
      _"Why is it that you loathe us who teeter on the edge of nothing? Those who were turned away from both light, and dark. Never given a choice."_
      _"That's simple. It's because you mess up our worlds."_

    I'll add that not just in KH2, but pretty consistently throughout his playable appearances we see that Sora has a habit of wearing a smile to mask his frustration, sadness or weariness. He often tries to hide those feelings from Donald and Goofy, with limited success, and I think it's a nuance that a lot of KH fans either tend to overlook or just assign to their favorite version of the character.

I'd argue this happens in every numbered KH title, when Sora loses the Keyblade in KH1, when Sora learns that using the Keyblade would help the Organization in KH2, and then right after Kairi gets caught by the Demon Tide toward the end of KH3. Sora doesn't explicitly say that his positivity failed the situation but he just straight gives up and someone else has to step in to get Sora back on his feet and moving again.

    I’ve had a journey with Sora as a character.
    I actually started the series with Days. And between that, and just my own preferences, Roxas ended up being my favorite protagonist of the series. To the point where I was kinda angry alongside him when the series said “No. Sora is the real protagonist.” It really drove home the tragedy of Roxas’ story for me, but also made me approach the other games with a little bitterness at first.
    Don’t get me wrong, I never disliked them, or even Sora. But there was a part of me that was always wishing it was Roxas instead.
    But over time I grew to appreciate Sora as a character, especially after finally playing Re:CoM. (Skipped it at first with just a tl;dr) The way he interacted with the characters of that game, especially Namine, showed me something that gave me a new appreciation for Sora.
    He’s not stupid, even if he occasionally has his moments. And he’s not naive, either. He’s stubborn.
    When he trusts others, it’s not because he doesn’t think things through at all. And it’s not because he’s too naive to consider that they might betray him. Instead, it’s because in spite of it all, he stubbornly chooses kindness. Chooses to believe in people.
    And it’s that hard-headedness that inspires other characters to live up to the trust he places in them. That stubbornness that makes them want to believe as well.
    And it’s that quality of his, not his strength, not his cleverness or lack thereof, but the ability to inspire others to be better that makes him the protagonist the series needs.
    I’ll always be a little sad that it’s not Roxas’ story. But I at least know now that it’s in good hands.

      Would you like a fanfic focused on Roxas as the protagonist ? There's an excellent "KH" fanfic named "The Twilight Will" in which he refused to merge back with Sora, resulting in him escaping to worlds beyond Kingdom Hearts domain, meaning these worlds are made jointly of darkness, light and nothingness, resulting in some of them being darker.
      The name is "KH: The Twilight Will". The worlds include:
      -Bioshock: Infinite;
      -Jak and Dexter;
      -God of War (original saga);
      -There are more, but you might not know these.
      In case you need further convincing, there's a world that is a video game version of the original version of "Alice in Wonderland".
      We also get the Nobodies explored in greater and clearer detail, not to mention he and Riku have a rematch.
      The nature of the hearts is also expanded, since these worlds did not belong to the original world from the age of Fairy Tales, therefore being subject to VERY different rules of how a heart operates. For example, one of the hearts Roxas connects to looks like some sort of giant neon sign. And Sora's condition as a heartless of light also receives more importance.

  • @lilchaos9212
    @lilchaos9212 Рік тому +28

    An angle I tend to look at Sora with is the idea that he has no idea who he actually is and so he just adapts and behaves the way others want. Remember, he has been connected to Ven (who has many of Sora's characteristics and quirks that may have been Ven's originally because he came first and had an actual personality before Sora was able to really be a person) since he was born and then at only four years old (when most children really start to develop a personality) he took Ven completely into his heart. That had to have had an effect on him.
    We see as early as KH1 that Sora adapts to people around him with the infamous "no frowning, no sad face. this ship runs on happy faces!" scene where Donald and goofy basically tell him to not show his actual feelings because their mission needs him to be happy, at least outwardly. Sora throughout the games struggles to keep on a happy facade, to the point where you can tell he is ignoring and brushing his feelings aside, never taking his own feelings and how others treat him too seriously. But we know they affect him.
    Sora, at the end of the day, is a child that cares so much for other people that he ignores his own problems (both because he sees them as not as important, and also perhaps because at this point he doesn't know how to deal with them) and focuses on helping others even at risk to himself. He is constantly criticised and held to impossible standards, with his incredible achievements downplayed while the others around him who have done way less get far more praise. Sora deserves way more love because if I were him, at fifteen/sixteen, I would've probably had a breakdown far earlier than the bad ending.

      But I love Riku’s downfall and redemption, and subsequent struggles and triumphs. Way more compelling.
      Roxas (pre KH3) was a protagonist who was doomed to tragedy from the moment of his “birth.” All that he learned, overcame and the bonds he forged were never meant to be. No matter how hard he fought, how angry he was at his situation… he had to die, in order for our good boi Sora to live. Incredibly compelling.

Roxas just has a healthier way of interacting with his negative emotions: dealing with them as they come up and his natural inclination to lean on others when he needs the help. His downfall happened not because of anything he could have fixed mentally, but due to outside circumstances far beyond his control.

    From Dream Drop Distance, in my view he took it lightly because he tought everything was part of the test.
    And while the novels aren't fully canon, i liked how much more clear things were the KH3D novel, even with just some phrases more, basically, he did tought everything was a test, even Xemnas and all, but very later on when he meets YX again he got suspicious of what he says, and then he decided to keep going deeper on his dreams because this could help him find out what was going on, now unsure if it was still a test, simple, but imo way more clear

    The only thing that bothers me about Sora is that sometimes I feel like the series plays up his ignorance as genuine stupidity. Here's two examples to show what I mean.
    *KH1:* Sora tries to stop Donald from leaving Deep Jungle before they can check for Riku and Kairi, accidentally crashing the ship in the process. He didn't mean to crash the ship, but he's worried about his friends and made a reckless move, something that is consistent with later points in the series where he does things like try to go into the Realm of Darkness without protection or even the whole bit with the Organization using Namine to gaslight him in Chain of Memories.
    *KH2:* Sora tries to check Ansem's computer for information on Riku and Kairi. When he can't find the information, he immediately tries to break it. This is after improperly tampering with the computer caused the MCP to begin aggressive actions against the resident of Hollow Bastion and after Leon stressed the importance of Ansem's computer and the information inside. While Sora might be frustrated, I can't see him allowing his anger to inconvenience other people he considers his friends.
    As a small aside, I do like a subtle detail related to the KH1 incident: as the series goes on, Sora goes on to become the main pilot of the Gummi Ship, meaning he does eventually learn from his mistake.

      Personally, at the times, they make him blatantly dumb is most likely just writing faults. I don't personally like how he's written in DDD but that could be because from what I hear was that DDD was supposed to be a Riku only game before either Square or Disney asked that Sora be put in since it had been a while since the audience played as him at that point. With that said from the get-go, he was always seen as a somewhat hot-headed teenager him doing those things because he's frustrated shows more about his character than people realize.

      In sofa’s defense, it wasn’t him who set off the MCP. Also, he just doesn’t know how computers work so it does make some sense that he would be getting annoyed by something he couldn’t figure out.
      While sora cares about his friends, it’s not ignorant for him to get frustrated or be reckless and occasionally somewhat obsessed. It’s just his flaws. And since he’s young, kids don’t know how to regulate their emotions. He’s not acting logically ignorant, rather emotionally ignorant.

    Sora isn't naturally happy-go-lucky, though. Right from the jump in KH 1, our first experiences with him are that he thinks deeply about the world around him and gives more gravity to dreams and possibilities than Riku, often getting teased for it. Yes, he isn't necessarily a more grounded person for it, but his key personality traits weren't optimism, they where a willingness to take things like faith and friendship more seriously than the "mature" Riku. It's this contemplative (notably not necessarily competent) Sora that gets lost as the series progresses. The Sora in III tends to play the clown too much. • @DLxxx
      @DLxxx Рік тому +1

      @@Redxan600 That’s simply not true. Sora is plenty capable of seeing bad people for what they are. At the time KH2 was written and released, only KH1 and Chain of Memories existed, and THOSE had Sora act with much more nuance and varied reactions to people in general. He was the angrier he's EVER been in Chain of Memories, and in KH1 he wasn't afraid to fight Riku or call him stupid for thinking he could control the heartless.
      It's not until.. what, DDD? That Sora started feeling REALLY happy go lucky. In fact, if you were active in the fandom back then, most people who liked the character hated his portrayal in DDD because he seemed more naive and less mature overall compared to previous appearances.

    • @Redxan600
      @Redxan600 Рік тому +1

      @@DLxxx But with KH1, he is still forgiving. Sure, he called out on Riku for his stupidity, but he's still forgave him for what he did.
      Chain of Memories I could barely count since Sora doesn't remember what happened in Castle Oblivion. So all of that anger was more or less for nothing. He was agressive because he was obsessed with saving Namine and is confused as to why he and Riku are fighting over her since they can both save her.
      I've been in this Fandom since the beginning. And I would've agreed with you on DDD Sora, but after hearing more about his character, I understand why he is the way he is.
      He was overconfident about his skills. He wasn't dumb or anything like that. If anything, he was going back to his KH1 self where everything was simple for him, before he left his island on an adventure. After what happened to him, he slowly starts to mature in KH3.
      That's why I didn't like how aggressive he was in kh2. I like how in the Manga, he questions if Nobodies really have a heart instead of acting so aggressive to his enemies. Again, you could say it was Roxas who had an influence on him, but if that was the case, then it was told pretty poorly.

    I think the problem is that the average fan isn't going to play the - what I lovingly call "spinoffs" of the franchise to get these nuances. I don't think they should have released the story in this way and in this order. I feel, having grown up loving 1 and 2, I and a lot of others had to miss out on context because they split the forums in which the story was told. If you just play 1, 2, and 3, his character is rather flip-floppy, annoying, and questionable QUITE a bit. Granted, I don't delve into the fandom nor have I experienced all the story because I didn't have access to the other games. I've heard chain of memories in specific is pretty important, so I'm going to go through the games again with those on the list.
    My main issue is how freakin' long it took to release 3 lol I had long since given up on the story by that point and made me a little bitter of Sora and the story as a whole.

A lot of people I've seen are "Sora is dead because he went the Final World before Quadratum" type of thinking. I think its more a situation where whatever holds people in one reality, some kind of invisible thread, is severed whenever you break a taboo of the current reality. Then you fade away, like MOM did.
      Its a me thing when it comes to theory crafting as well. I like to explore negative spaces/ill defined rules of the universe and the story itself. Like I see it being multiple realities instead reality/unreality and MOM is traveling to different realities to possibly create a Kingdom Hearts for each of these realities. If forced into a dichotomy of a only two sides of reality, I think one side is blessed with the Light of Kingdom Hearts and thus its magical while the other side is not blessed and so they developed with a more "realistic" form of technology without magic. Good takes, I'll agree that it's not exactly fair to compare each "version" of Sora throughout the games as each are all a part of building his character. I can say I like KH3 Sora the most because he's matured so much, but that was the entire point of his journey in previous games, he has his strong and weak moments to build up his arc. And yes even though DDD Sora has a lot of weird writing/dialogue (in my opinion it's due to the writers compensating for not having Donald and Goofy there enough for the trio to bounce off each other, so it's like they wrote lines that would work better for D&G but had Sora say them), I agree that he still has some great highlights in DDD, such as his talk with Roxas and how he believes Roxas deserves to be his own person as well as his reaction to Riku passing the Mark of Mastery rather than himself, to contrast with Terra and Aqua's test and demonstrate the core of Sora's personality. All in all, I may have characters in the series I like more than Sora, but he's still hard to dislike, he's like the kind of friend we all wish we had.

    I think you should read "KH: Sea-Change of Fate", in case you're unsatisfied with some things in canon. In it, Kairi breaks from her script at the end of "KH 1", joining Sora, Donald and Goofy in their adventures. BTW, "Breaking the script" isn't an exaggeration. The Fates, from "Hercules", comment on how she broke multiple prophecies when she decided not to stay at Traverse Town, gaining her Keyblade (Naminé gains one too, btw). Oh ! And the Disney characters FINALLY become useful and actually likable.
    Now, a few warnings:
    -The author uses some elements from the manga, so don't be surprised at some heavier takes on the story;
    -Marluxia is a pedophile;
    -There's some polygamy (and the author is open to multiple forms of sexuality), but it actually contributes for multiple characters' development;
    -Axel and Xion are officially recognized as trans in the series (on a personal note, I could actually see that as canon, kinda wished it was, I may ask the author if I could use the trans perspective);
    -You'll find Aqua's ship in this fic to be...unique. But personally, I could see it too. I ship Cortana and MasterChief. Can't really judge after that;
    -Not sure if there's something else I should tell you, because I can only think of good things, and those are a surprise I want you to find and experience for yourself.

    However, that’s when it falls off the rails for me. I don’t understand how DDD Sora reverts to a more childlike personality. I guess it has something to do with how he and Riku take on younger forms in the game but I don’t agree with that plot direction. It’s convoluted for no reason. KH3 Sora is fine except that the search for the power of waking really felt like arbitrary nonsense just to keep Sora on the sidelines while everything else was getting ready. It felt like nothing Sora did mattered until the endgame.
