You are right, but if a joke is not funny then what's the point of the joke? I've heard amazing jokes about bad things, I find they land even better when they are relatable, so I would find something funnier if it's making fun of something I've been through.
I wouldn't say the joke was offensive, I wouldn't even say the joke was tone-deaf. The joke just wasn't funny and TBH that's even worse if you are a comedian.
He could have apologized for the shitty joke, he could have even ignored the complaints. He decided to defend a stupid, poorly written, poorly delivered, not funny "joke" that's not even his, that "joke" is older than he is. That only speaks against him and his talent.

Also, EGO? THIS is where the word ego is being used with him? THIS moment??? He JUST blew up after TEN YEEEAAARRRS of busting his ass and never giving up and he JUST now blew up RIGHT before laying off of comedy for a while. He tells constant jokes like this and they’re ALL jokes and he CLEARLY feels horrible for people that experience legitimate hardship. I deal with ALL of my trauma and hardships with comedy and laughing at it and on and on. Without laughter, I’d have killed myself. I’ve ACTUALLY been molested by preachers as a little kid and best to shit in every way by stepdads and was ACTUALLY homeless for YEARS(not just couch surfing) and on and on and on and those were the minor incidents… never once have I felt or thought MATT RIFE out of ALL the comedians, was the apathetic ahole…..

Criticism is when you use your speech to combat someone else's speech. Basically you go "eh I'm not gonna watch this guy anymore." Freedom to do so and respect for those that choose to do it. Or, you could publicly criticize and call him out. Bring him to task. This is also fine to be called criticism.
Cancel culture on the other hand is this vicious attack on his livelihood - to contact agents, vendors, or venues to prevent him from practicing his craft. This is authoritarian and not criticism. If everyone decided they were done with Matt rife, on one hand, then fine: the free market spoke. But if it's an executive call from a small group to just get rid of him, this is a controlled market and goes beyond the purview of criticism. That's what cancel culture refers to.
