I’m so excited. I just bought this tree. It’s a three foot seedling. I live in Seattle area too! I can’t wait to see it grow. I didn’t believe from the tag that it was evergreen but am so delighted that it is!

Awesome! I’m excited for you too! It is evergreen. I’m a nearer to Tacoma than Seattle but we pretty much have the same weather I think. Best of luck! ☺️🌿

I just planted four kay Parris trees today. They are gorgeous. Love the color combination of leaves. Looking forward to seeing some flowers soon. I am also in WA, so hopefully they will glow well like yours 😊

This was such a great video! Thank you so much for making this! I have 2 ‘Kay Parris’ Southern Magnolias in my garden here in Southern Utah (zone 8b/9a). I love them so much! They definitely grow very fast for a southern Magnolia! I agree with absolutely everything you said in this video! Cheers!

I love your garden choices! I'm considering trying this magnolia and the dappled willow out.
Has your magnolia continued to grow quickly? We removed a Bradford pear tree last year and didn't realize how much is was blocking road noise out for us and need a replacement hedge soon. I've been concerned that this could be a messy choice?

Hi! Oh how funny that I’m seeing your comment now. Just yesterday I was thinking about doing an update video on my Kay Parris to let viewers know that it’s still growing pretty fast for me still. I just finished the video today and saw your comment just now 😊 So the answer is yes it’s still growing quickly - standing right now at 8-8.5 feet tall and I’m really loving this tree more every day. It does shed some leaves in the fall so yes it can be a bit messy, but not too messy if you ask me. My trees are in my backyard which I don’t always have to tidy. If they were in the front, I’d have to clean or I’d be risking a letter from the HOA lol. Arborvitaes might be a better option if you’re looking for a dense hedge for blocking noise that’s also low maintenance? Although it might not be as graceful as a Magnolia aesthetics wise.
Ooh.. the dappled willow I love. I have 6-7 around my backyard. They are not really low maintenance though, I feel I should give you a heads up. I thought they were easy during the first season or two but then I found out that you have to prune and cut back each spring or they’ll grow and grow. But boy.. they are gorgeous. I love the tri-color effect. Good luck with whatever you choose :)

Thanks! And yes I’m planning on doing a video on my Little Gem magnolias when spring rolls around, especially now that they both survived the 2-week long freeze that we just had in our area. Pretty tough trees. I planted Little Gem a year after I planted Kay Parris so they’re younger but they look just as beautiful 😊

Thank you for this video! Do you find that Kay parris magnolia doesn’t bloom as much as little gem magnolia? I’m trying to decide between them!
Also what are your other favorite evergreen plants that add interest all season long? 😯

    • @Linasgardens
      @Linasgardens  Рік тому +3

I haven’t seen a whole lot of differences in the quantity of the blooms between the two but my Kay Parris is also more established than my Little Gem by about a year so perhaps it’s too soon for me to render an opinion seeing that my Little Gem is still too young. The characteristics their flowers are also very similar to me too, in size, color and fragrance. If you put a Kay Parris bloom next to that of Little Gem’s, I won’t be able to tell which is which. But one thing I do notice is that my Kay Parris is a few degrees more cold hardy. It looks evergreen and fresh all year through the roughest of winters whereas some of my Little Gem’s leaves will wither and brown when it gets too cold. I’m in zone 8b by the way.
Yes, there are other evergreen plants in my yard that I’m growing fonder of each day, first is Ceanothus - it’s more a shrub and a tree. When it blooms in spring, it’s absolutely gorgeous, and this shrub is so low maintenance too. I also must mention Emerald Green Arborvitae. They can be overused and a bit boring here where I live but I find that when strategically placed in the garden, they really add elegant heights and good structure, not to mention the fact that they look so beautiful when snow-covered. Last evergreen shrub I recommend is camellia. If your zone allows it, you won’t regret having at least one or two of these in your garden. Some varieties put out flowers in the coldest months of the year… they definitely lift up my spirit in the winter when there’s not much in the garden to appreciate.
Sorry I wrote too long. I love all your questions! They got me going 😅 Happy gardening! Thanks for stopping by 😊🌸🌿

@Lina’s Gardening Journal I love the long reply thank you I really appreciate it! Sadly I’m just one zone behind you and so it knocks out two of the beauties you mentioned 😢 I sure would love to have camellias, maybe one day there will be a hardy zone 7 one. I also love my green arborvitaes! I have four that are 20 years old in my front. But I’m finally landscaping my backyard where is just a huge acre bare plot! So maybe I should add some, though they take ages to grow sadly. I got so ahead of myself just thinking of my favorite flowers I forgot about adding evergreen. Landscaping can be overwhelming! 😂 That’s interesting that so far there’s not much difference with your magnolias, I was curious because online it says that Kay Morris only flowers once but little gem is a repeater. But then I read that Kay Morris flowers for so long it’s almost like she’s a repeater! If little gem did flower more then that would make me lean towards him but if not 🤷🏻‍♀️ because one big difference is that Kay Morris is listed as a fast grower and little gem is moderate! Wish I had heard about it before I planted my little gem 😅 but we get snow here so I might also plant a Kay Morris 🥰 I honestly could talk about plants for ages. I’m not ready for winter to come this year

I am thinking of getting a Kay Parris. It’s easily available here in UK. But I read it can tolerate partial shade. I wonder if you know anyone who manage to grow KP successfully, with say, 3-4 hrs of sun? I don’t need lots of flowers. I just want a basically healthy tree and my soil is fertile with lots of worms. Is that (partial shade) possible? To grow the KP?

I don’t know for certain. Almost all websites say they thrive in a sunny spot. With sunshine, you will probably get fast and bushy growth and lots of flowers but if those things are not your main focuses, you should give it a go. You might be able to still have a healthy tree in a partial sunny spot! 🌿🪴

Thank you! Hmm.. I must admit this past growing season I was too busy tending to other weaker plants and newer plants that I kind of neglected this magnolia tree a bit, partly because it was just doing so great on its own. But at planting, I remember myself being quite meticulous about giving it well-drained soil by mixing in soil amendments. That for me was the biggest thing. In terms of fertilizing, I have just been using Miracle Gro liquid fertilizer on it and that seems to work for my tree. Each season it shot up 2-3 feet of growth. This tree is so simple and low maintenance I love it so much. How old is yours? I think they need even less care at maturity. But my basic care routine for my garden including my Kay Parris is a layer of compost every spring followed by mulch then fertilize once or twice only also in spring and that’s it! I don’t do much else. Happy planting 😊

Oh I’m sorry. I wonder why although I’m sure there must be a reason. Could magnolias be an invasive species in your area? Just a guess. Sometimes governments put a ban on certain plants if they deem them invasive. Or no one has thought to import them yet maybe?Hopefully you’ll be able to get one but if not, there are other beautiful trees to enjoy I’m sure in Belgium! I have a sister who lives there.
