60's Kart Revival! Can We Turn An Indy Kart into a Dirt Track Racer?

In this video we show the overhaul on the 60’s kart in preparation for the Cars and Camera’s Dustbowl 500 Race. The frame had lots of flex, so we added some reinforcement bars. The extra rigidity and straightening of the frame greatly improved the steering of the kart. We also added some dimple die panels with our Eastwood Punch and Flare set to give the kart some style since we did not race it with the fiberglass body on.
Thanks for watching, stay safe and stay tuned for the next video!

If you can bend the right front spindle up 3-5 degrees will help a lot. Also running 4 psi in the left sides and 5 in the right. I've noticed that the Streaker chassis like 1/2 to 1 inch of stagger in the rear and 1 inch in the front. As well as off setting the rear axle to the right 1/2 inch. A big thing with these stuff straight rail karts is moving your upper body weight around on the kart. So having a seat to help sit up up straighter so you can transfer your weight helps a lot more then one thinks. Finding the right gearing setup so you can stay in the gas more is also helpful.

I've played around with all kinds of things with my kart since I run it on a short 170foot bull ring high banked track I've built. Those tips is what I've found to work best. Gearing is another big thing also I'm sure I done mentioned that. If you can flat foot it or stay in the throttle as much as possible it will help the kart turn you'll feel it set down on the right rear and the whole kart will turn. It's more something you'll have to mess with and figure out to get it down pat.

I bet a very flat torque cure would be best for a centrifugal clutch like this.

For such a short track a low gearing is a good idea as well. Something like 12/68-72 messing with gearing and tire size would be the best route.

Not sure when we'll have another update on it but it'll probably be in a couple months. We've been having issue with the new motor controller and are waiting for AllTrax to get back to us with some solutions. Good luck with your project!

You young Gentlemen enlighten my day! I wish you could help clean out my Vespa scooter engine, renew brakes tune engine. 79 Vespa old style BUT UNDER 800 miles! 2cycle 200cc. SEPERATE gas and oil tank but they mix when running.

Yeah, if you look up “Vespa P200e 1979” she is a beauty. She has chrome in front / rear to strap on your belongings. Paint is good except front fender. Yrs ago a kid rode it in loose gravel and fell with it. The fender had a few light scrapes and (rounded dents that can be easily straightened out).
I would strip off all paint and have it painted professionally the original white color. I would send off seat to a Custom Motorcycle seat maker and have it reshuffled and special riding foam and tan leather finished seat. It had a nice size windshield I would replace as that plastic ages badly unless you put something on it to keep it fresh in storage.
I would put Police grade “P1” lights in place of regular bulbs. Add P1 low mounted clear fog lights that have flash mode, and a P1 6mini LED bulb set in a clear mini dome smaller than a quarter on rear fender (connected to brakes) to flash super bright when I brake.
P1’s you can see easily 2miles in dark. In day, they put a blind spot in car driver behind me. Cars have almost hit me hundreds of times in rear of my other motorcycle. When I had same mini brake light installed… traffic would hit brakes hard staying a safe distance from my rear.
No rust on scooter except front fender a little! It has spare tire under rear fender well. All tires the same size!
I don’t have money to restore it being disabled. I wish I did! Or someOne sponsor a go-fund-me. I talked to a Vespa antique expert. To do it right, end to end…. It would be right at $7,000.00 total. Rechroming all chrome parts, strip and repaint professionally. I would re-wire have engine stripped, rebuilt, new seals, gaskets, hoses, spark plug. Tuning that 2+cycle motor is tricky as oil gas mixer has to be perfect balance, then carburetor. Top speed is 55mph.
A collector would die to have it as they can pay to have it refurbished correctly. I wrote Vespa. They have all parts available as original if I went new parts route on some items.
Maybe one day……I can fix my little girl up to original new look and run. I would give her a beautiful Italian name. Lol
Yep, I love bikes all sizes, mostly antiques.

Slicks were originally required to try and keep the dust down on the track, but most people ended up using turf tires

That's right, when we bought it the seller told us it was used in the 60's at Six Flags over Texas. We later found out it's actually a mid-eighties Bird Mfg. Indy Kart but we called it the "60's kart" so long that the name stuck and we haven't corrected ourselves haha

Why are you using ether on a lawn mower engine? You should barely have to pull the pull cord and have it fire up... it's one of the easiest engines in the world.
