Hi and thanks for the honest review. I own a 1200RS too and love it - had three GSs in the past, two oil-heads and a 2015 LC and I must say the RS is the non-bulky non-cumbersome GS alternative with the lovely 1200 boxer engine, which I´m a fan of. The RSs conventional front suspension also provides more feel than the Telelever which equips the GS. Comfort-wise, I´m 6´3" and find the RS almost as roomy as the GS - I have the 820mm seat fitted although I might go up to the 840mm one for a bit of extra legroom. Like yours, mine has bar risers fitted and the ergos are excellent. After watching your vid I´ll probably order a GPS relocation kit - looks like the one you installed is the MOTO MATE. Anyway, totally agree with you, the RS is underrated, probably because of the success of the GS, but in fact for road use, including city, IMHO it is the better sibling. Will be testing the 1250RS soon, just for the laugh, but in all honesty, I like the 1200 so much that I´ll probably be biased against the 1250. Well, that´s my hope anyway. Cheers!
Hi sorry for not responding sooner. Yes you are correct it is the moto mate kit. I feel the same I'd love a 1250 but I can't justify changing it at the moment and this bike does everything I want at the moment.
Nice review, I've been tempted by the RS since 2015 and now I no longer carry a pillion and after 3 GS' I've got a 1250RS SE with the tubular bars on. So far I'm really liking it as it's so much easier to move round and ride at low speed that the GS was and as a new GS is now silly money it made the decision to finally jump off the GS bandwagon even easier.
It's a very nice bike. I test rode it when I was deciding whether to go for it or the Z1000SX when upgrading from my Ninja 650. I went with the Kwak because it was cheaper to buy and run, and I trusted Kawasaki reliability more than BMW's and also I have a dealer very close to where I live (though I didn't buy from them). I'm happy with the decision given my circumstances and am really enjoying the Z1000SX. The only thing I miss is the shaft drive (no chain maintenance hassle). I didn't like the dash when I test rode it, much prefer the dash on the Kawasaki. I still watch your maintenance videos whenever I need to do any work on my Kwak 👍🏼
Just found your channel really helpful and maintenance well explained, just got myself a triumph street twin and found the how to videos saved me a lot of time keep them coming Cheers Clive
Nice review! Regarding the indicator switch not feeling very positive, I've found on a couple of bikes that if you can open up the enclosure, then a quick squirt of WD-40 on the switch's mechanism can bring back that positive feel. It sort of dissolves the grime, allowing the mechanical detents to behave as designed.
Spot on review. I’m new to the 1200RS and have been left wondering “why has this gone under my radar for so long?” I’m addicted to mine. Handles better than any other bmw boxer I’ve owned and much lighter than my old gsa. Why do people keep saying they’re dear to service? They’re not and they are cheap to diy. Do the easy ones and what you save pays for the dearer ones. Big improvements I made included Heli bar risers, mra screen and wunderlich standard height Aktiv comfort seat. With hindsight fitting the optional bmw gs style bars and risers is the better way but you need extensions to the clutch hose for that. I get 55mpg from mine and it pulls line a steam train. I have no interest in the r1250 being quicker. My mate has one and honestly? There’s not much between them. Fit full luggage and you have an inter continental mile crunching tourer that just wants luggage unclipped to release its sports bike dna. Fitted with Roadtech01 se tyres the handling is astonishingly planted. My only gripes are that bmw should have fitted proper shock crud protection and s decent hugger as standard plus when warm, my engine is really rattly, especially loud tappet knocking on the left cylinder.
Just bought a 2015 with 30k on it and it is an amazing ride. Every "Niggle" TSB had with it I could not disagree with but still I love mine more with every ride. Great power, very comfy and looks special too.
Hi thanks for watching and commenting. I think you've hit the nail on the head with everything you've said. Definitely regarding the crud protection, you end up spending a small fortune to make it as it should have been. I now have a 1250 (couldn't resist!) and mine also sounds tappy on the left side same as my 1200 did, but all in all there is no other bike I'd want at the minute and I find myself telling all and sundry how under rated these are. Great review! I just got rid of my loathsome 21 plate KTM 1290 sas for a R1200rs and its superb, All i have changed is bar risers and muck catchers, Great bike!
@@TheSussexBiker . Lol, I wish. I haven't got my full licence yet! Despite getting a fair few miles under my belt on a 600 with my instructor covid has stopped me getting it. Bought a 125cc now and will ride that over the winter and take my test in February / March. I've heard it said that if a lot of GS owners had tried the RS they'd have bought it instead.
Thanks for the good review of the rs. I currently own a 2017gs and I love most everything about it. I like the leg room and the only complaint is it's just a bit tall for my 30inch inseam. I'm checking out the rs for a possible switch. Thanks again and keep on enjoying the ride.
Thanks for watching and commenting. My inside leg measurement is 29 in and I have the lowest seat, they do different seat heights so you should be able to tailor it to your size. Good luck with trying one out 👍
I rode one on demo and dropped it because the clutch was so unbelievably lite i've since bought an F800GT but i'm too big for it so this weekend i'm purchasing a 2018 R1200RS SE and i'm looking forward to it, prior to the 800 i had a CB1300 an awesome bike but like you I'm drawn to the clever systems on the BMW's.
Having had a lifetime of sports bikes but deciding I’m getting old and chose to go touring I decided BMW make touring bikes and searched and searched eventually finding a K1200S in like new condition with hardly any miles … loved it but 170bhp all it ever wanted to do was go fast ( I used to race bikes and I understand ‘fast’ but that bike took fast to a whole new level and in todays modern era ones licence wouldn’t last long 😢) and wanting a more sit up and beg riding position I considered the obvious GS but going the long way round to Tescos wasn’t my vibe but I liked the BMW quality , the heated grips , suspension on the button and most of all the shaft drive hassle free touring . Great honest review ... not really heard anything to negative about the rs 1200. everyone who puts a leg over one struggles to find really negative stuff.
This bike wasn't even on my radar, I think they are very under rated. Yeah for sure there a few little niggles but what bike doesn't. All in all I think it's a very capable bike.
Excellent review of a very excellent bike. Just returned from long trip after 3 days and have to say its great. I've owned a succession of R1200R bikes and now riding a very low mileage fully kitted 2016 RS. Better and better. Loads of usable torque, handles great, all the options are useful and love the electronic suspension and quick shift (after 2nd as you mentioned). I rode a demo 1250cc version and didn't find it much better performance wise. Think of the savings.
Hi thanks for watching and commenting. I agree with you, I rode a 1250 the other day whilst mine was in having a service and whilst the front looks a bit nicer and the dash is way improved and of course it has a 1250 shift cam, I really can't justify changing from the 1200RS at the moment.
What a great honest review. Thanks for doing this as I’ve just come from test riding an RS and a GS back to back. I rode the RS first and just totally loved it. I felt the GS was a bit noisy (wind/front end) immediately after riding the RS and also that it just didn’t seem as smooth. Almost clunky and ‘agricultural’ in the drive. Sure it’s taller and has more leg room and the luggage holds a bit more than the luggage on the RS but in t§eras of ride quality and pleasure it just gave the smile on my face that I think you are talking about. Being a shorter guy 5’9", I also didn’t feel the bike was just a bit tall for me. Have you got luggage for yours? The bar risers are a great idea which I’ll organise once I’ve found the right 1200rs now. Stay safe.
Hi thanks for watching and the kind comments. I have got luggage for mine, when I got it it had Shad SH36 panniers on and I've since added a Shad Top box. Happy searching :)
You truly deserve every view your channel gets. I came across while looking for diy on the kawasaki. Now you have this BMW so you won't make movies about the kawasaki anymore, but nevertheless I hope you have fun with it and I hope to see service vids about this one too. Keep it save and I am looking forward to see new video's of yours.
Thanks for the very kind words, yes I do intend to do some videos on the BMW now it's out of warranty, we've been going through some rearranging at SB towers and the garage has been a bit full, but hopefully I will have the room to start shooting some videos soon :)
Hi there that year flew by I remember when you got it cause I got my z1000 sx on the 18/10/19 the candy blue plasma 16 reg same has the one you got rid off I’ve done few changes on mine handle bar risers riders foot peg lowers shad rack for a top bow I’ll have to do a review of my Z biggest miles I done in a week was 1226 miles I had the seat made to fit me took 2 months backwards and forwards I like the bmw but I cannot get through my house no rear Access so I’m limited to what I can have bike wise thanks for sharing your review BSafe 👍👍👍👍
I rode a r1250r when the dealer did not have any rs in stock, that bike was seriously fast and it felt like it was trying to rip my arms out. Coming from a vfr1200f with 173hp not expecting alot from the 136hp of the boxer engine i was left with a smile from ear to ear. Still I felt that legroom was lacking and also my hands went numb after only 40 mins of cityriding. This summer I will give it another shot and look for an RS, hopefully even Swedes will get onboard with the hype. 😁
@@hoforo I think for me the angle of the wrists Kinda stopped the flow of blood, partly it was a new bike for me and the location was not very relaxing so I guess it also played a role in my tension through the arms.
@@hoforo I have suffered various degrees of numbness on all the bikes I've had (never had an r1200r but did have a street r) but this RS is comfortable for me especially with the risers/backers.
Hi Buddy nice video, I just picked up one of these yesterday and want to move the navigator from the handlebars, do you mind me asking what kit you used? Many thanks I'm enjoying the RS videos
Hi sorry for delay and thanks for watching. The bracket I used was from Hornig - www.motorcycleparts-hornig.com/BMW-R-1250-RS/Navigation-and-Communication/GPS-Mount-44018.html. Hope you're enjoying the bike :)
I was curious about how you would rate this bike compared to the 1000SX I watched you service, but I think I already know that you like this better since you said you have never ridden a bike longer. Personally I tested the 1250RS and the Ninja 1000SX just after lockdown last year, and I went for the Ninja, because of its smoothness and I found it lighter here in the big city where I live. Also those cylinders in front of my shins at stand still really bothered me. Oh yes, then there was that awkward reach for the indicator switch, that didn't help.
I did love my SX's but BMW for me is better , no chain to mess about with, the engine is more suited to road riding and the ESA gives a great ride. I know what you mean about having the cylinders in front of your shins but you get used to it. Good luck and enjoy your Ninja :)
Bought my R1250RS last summer. Love it! Lovely review--thanks! Question--would you mind sharing the riser details? Hornig or someone else? I have the Hornig GPS relocator, the cylinder guards, Denali D2 lights, upgraded horn, and the EZ HexCan "fuse block" thing.
Hi thanks for watching, the risers are made by a company called 'voigt' heres a link to the ones I have www.sportouring.co.uk/shop/comfort-ergonomics/bar-risers/voigt/handlebar-riser-with-offset-30mm-high-and-21mm-closer-for-bmw-r-1200-rs-lc-k54-2015-2019/
@@TheSussexBiker I bought there Hornig risers for my RS which look exactly the same as yours, and they're 30mm up and 21 back. I'm 5'-8" and they are perfect for me.
Thanks very much for this. Really helped confirm a few things and highlight other things I didn't know. Anyway, I bought one of these this morning. Take delivery in three weeks. Can't wait. Two questions, though: first, who makes your bigger screen? And second, what top box/panniers do you recommend with this bike? Thanks again.
Hi thanks for watching and commenting. The screen I have is this one www.powerbronze.co.uk/bmw-r1200rs-15-18-r1250rs-19-20-450-mm-high-40-mm-wider-420-b124.html luggage wise the BMW panniers have a more 'elegant' mounting solution and the bmw topbox is quite small plus you need a luggage rack for it which is also quite expensive. I have shad luggage which I believe is who make the BMW stuff, but the mountings are a bit more 'agricultural' so when the cases off you have framework, but it doesn't bother me too much. Good luck with your new bike - hope you enjoy it 👍
Hi great review 👍👍regarding the seat is it the low seat version or it’s the normal one on a low setting ? Is it comfortable? The reason I ask is I ride the F750 with the low seat and it’s not comfortable at all ! Killing my arse bone 😂
Hi thanks for watching, there are different seat options mine came with the low seat option there are four choices - extra low 760mm height / step length 1720mm - low 790mm height / step length 17800mm - standard 820mm height /step length 1840mm and sport 840mm height and 1875mm step length. You could consider having the seat repadded with memory foam as I had this done on my previous Z1000SX as that used to kill my arse, interestingly I don't suffer as bad on the RS.
Hi thanks for commenting, generally I would get around 190 - 200 miles if ridden 'normally' obviously if ridden hard this would drop a bit even my 1250 is giving around the same mileage but then I'm not riding balls out on the road as I like my licence too much :)
I'm not suffering to be honest with the low seat and risers it's a comfy place to be except I do get a num bum after a couple of hours in the saddle but I've suffered that on most bikes I've had :)
I am seriously considering a used R1200RS as my next bike I have seen mixed comments as to which R1200RS came with "Cornering ABS" I have seen mixed comments online as to when the R1200RS was available with cornering ABS. Some say all Sport & Sport SE had it. Others say it was only if bike had "rider modes pro" Some say it has to have "ABS pro" on spec sheet. Other sources indicate it was not available before manufacture year 2017 subject to spec. Any ideas? Happy to be signposted to elsewhere I like the mods fitted. I recognise the very local Aware R1200RS has symmetrical lights plus the shift-cam but obviously a dearer bike to purchase. Thanks 👍
Hi thanks for watching and commenting. From researching I have come to the conclusion that Cornering ABS was introduced on the 2017 model year as part of ABS pro in conjunction with rider mode pro. I believe the option code is 5AC. Hopefully this helps and good luck if you get one you won't regret it, I'll tell anybody that listens that this is a very under-rated bike😁 I loved my R1200RS and am lucky to have a 1250 rs now.
@@TheSussexBiker OK..Thanks the info useful and adds to what I have learned thus far. Having a bit of a rethink on next bike now due to tight parking access here (R1200RS & VFR1200F were firmly on radar). Take care & Ride Safe 👍🏍
@@AW8UK No problems, I carried on looking after I replied to you and looked at the 2015 and 2017 owners manuals and sure enough no mention of cornering abs in the earlier handbook but it is mentioned in the 2017 owners manual so I believe that confirms it. Good luck with your decision, for me the esa is a gamechanger, but the VFR is also a great bike I had a 800vtec which was brilliant just a little uncomfortable for me :)
@@TheSussexBiker Thanks I also learned pre 2017 bikes with Rider Modes Pro can have retrofit of ABS Pro (prices vary and not all dealers allegedly not as keen &/or knowlegable as others) .basically I believe Rider Modes Pro means suitable IMU but the software for ABS Pro was absent at initial bike launch) All information after much research. VFR800 5th 6th & 8th gen prior considered and not ruled out
Hi , That's a good question, I think it depends on what you like plus also what year/version's you are looking at. I had a 2014 and a 2016 z1000sx and my R1200 has been superseded by the R1250RS. I found my Z1000SX had a great engine but the suspension and steering let it down a bit (On the later bikes they have made changes and I've not ridden a later one). The RS is a great all round package especially with the electronic suspension and the boxer engine has great characteristics but you may prefer an inline 4. They are both great bikes in their own way and think the only way to know is ride both and see which you like best.
Don't buy the ninja, honestly I recommend you the beemers. 👍Smooth running boxer oppose twin, large Cc's means you get gobs of useable power, nothing left to be desired. The only engine configuration that influence the low center of gravity giving you that amazing riding experience. Repairs easy too, spark plugs are out there , no lower fairing to ease oil/filter change, (it's all at the side of the motor!) And, as pointed by Subaru engineers, the boxer lasts longer because it runs cooler by design.👍
I tested both the R1250RS and the Ninja 1000SX and went for the Ninja. You really need to test ride both and get a feel for what is right for you, as their characteristics are quite different. If you like smoothness you'll like the Ninja. Also, if you spec out the Beemer to the standard level of the Kawa and set it up for touring with panniers, you'll have enough money left for a new riding suit, helmet, GPS and more ...
Don't go the path of trying to save money by buying cheaper alternatives motorcycle, and buy aftermarket parts that ruin your bike because it wasn't designed properly. BMW R series boxer bikes are proper bikes, made for all day riding, with functional design, not bikes that were scaled by cost such as the Japanese bikes. 👍
@@TheSussexBiker Thanks for the reply. I'm 6'2 and 17 stone, so I guess I'd play around with seat heights and see what works best. I've had several boxers over the years and most have had adjustable seat height.

Thanks for the very kind words, yes I do intend to do some videos on the BMW now it's out of warranty, we've been going through some rearranging at SB towers and the garage has been a bit full, but hopefully I will have the room to start shooting some videos soon :)
great stuff I'm thinking of buying one to replace my 1050 speed triple
I don't think you'd be disappointed, be interested to know what you think if you test ride/get one :)
Interesting, got me thinking...
I'm going to upgrade my bike this year. I think very seriously about bmw 1200rs
I have an R and liked it so bought an RS too ...the dash on them does not bother me, easy enough the read.
Thanks for the comments and watching. Glad you're enjoying the z ride safe :)
Very good review
Interesting review and thanks. Which screen did you fit?
I rode a r1250r when the dealer did not have any rs in stock, that bike was seriously fast and it felt like it was trying to rip my arms out. Coming from a vfr1200f with 173hp not expecting alot from the 136hp of the boxer engine i was left with a smile from ear to ear. Still I felt that legroom was lacking and also my hands went numb after only 40 mins of cityriding. This summer I will give it another shot and look for an RS, hopefully even Swedes will get onboard with the hype. 😁
The pull of the engine is addictive for sure, good luck and let me know how you get on with a test ride in the summer.
I was looking at the R as well as the RS to buy. Could you please tell me why your hands went numb on the R? vibration or cold something else?
@@hoforo I think for me the angle of the wrists Kinda stopped the flow of blood, partly it was a new bike for me and the location was not very relaxing so I guess it also played a role in my tension through the arms.
@@hoforo I have suffered various degrees of numbness on all the bikes I've had (never had an r1200r but did have a street r) but this RS is comfortable for me especially with the risers/backers.
I have a 1250rs and had the same vibration. Put on a set of Grip Puppies and havent had an issue since!
had test ride on 1250rs really liked it but can't make my mind up between RT RS 1250 .
I know what you mean, one of friends recently had RT1250 and I had a go and was quite tempted but for now I think I will stick with my RS :)
I am from Portugal. I am thinking buy one from 2016 with 8000 miles.
I have 2016 R1200RS and love the bike. I am wondering where you bought the GPS relocation kit?
Hi sorry missed this comment. Search for 'moto mate' and you should find it :)
BMW boxer series= runs like a car 👍 nothing comes close to it.
Hi thanks for watching, you're right I'm definitely converted for me it's a perfect engine for road riding.
The screen I have is this one www.powerbronze.co.uk/bmw-r1200rs-15-18-r1250rs-19-20-450-mm-high-40-mm-wider-420-b124.html
luggage wise the BMW panniers have a more 'elegant' mounting solution and the bmw topbox is quite small plus you need a luggage rack for it which is also quite expensive. I have shad luggage which I believe is who make the BMW stuff, but the mountings are a bit more 'agricultural' so when the cases off you have framework, but it doesn't bother me too much. Good luck with your new bike - hope you enjoy it 👍
Lockdown what a joke that was! Nice bike!
Definitely, I've had a tour planned for the last two years - hopefully this year it will go ahead :)
Do you really get 320 km on an 18 litre tank? That's very good.
Hi thanks for commenting, generally I would get around 190 - 200 miles if ridden 'normally' obviously if ridden hard this would drop a bit even my 1250 is giving around the same mileage but then I'm not riding balls out on the road as I like my licence too much :)
How is your lower back?I have a 2016 Rt1200,can’t stand the back pain much longer!
I'm not suffering to be honest with the low seat and risers it's a comfy place to be except I do get a num bum after a couple of hours in the saddle but I've suffered that on most bikes I've had :)
I am seriously considering a used R1200RS as my next bike
I have seen mixed comments as to which R1200RS came with "Cornering ABS"
I have seen mixed comments online as to when the R1200RS was available with cornering ABS.
Some say all Sport & Sport SE had it. Others say it was only if bike had "rider modes pro" Some say it has to have "ABS pro" on spec sheet. Other sources indicate it was not available before manufacture year 2017 subject to spec.
Any ideas?
Happy to be signposted to elsewhere
I like the mods fitted.
I recognise the very local
Aware R1200RS has symmetrical lights plus the shift-cam but obviously a dearer bike to purchase.
@@TheSussexBiker Thanks I also learned pre 2017 bikes with Rider Modes Pro can have retrofit of ABS Pro (prices vary and not all dealers allegedly not as keen &/or knowlegable as others) .basically I believe Rider Modes Pro means suitable IMU but the software for ABS Pro was absent at initial bike launch)
All information after much research.
VFR800 5th 6th & 8th gen prior considered and not ruled out
How do you find the windscreen, which I believe is an aftermarket piece?
Yes it is indeed an aftermarket one here is a link www.powerbronze.co.uk/bmw-r1200rs-15-18-r1250rs-19-20-450-mm-high-40-mm-wider-420-b124.html
Hi, I am coming up on the time to buy a new bike, and I am narrowing it down to a ninja 1000 and the rs. How do the two compare? Pros, cons?
@@Antimortem You are just talking nonsense. You like BMW, fine there's nothing wrong with that.
Have you turned the traction control off/down and pulled wheelies?
No I have too much mechanical sympathy to wheelie a bike and also I'm not a wheelie guy :)
With the lowest seat height, are your legs cramped at all? What weight/height are you?
Hi thanks for watching, my legs aren't cramped at all, I'm 5ft 8in I think the last time I weighed myself I was around 13 stone.
@@TheSussexBiker Thanks for the reply. I'm 6'2 and 17 stone, so I guess I'd play around with seat heights and see what works best. I've had several boxers over the years and most have had adjustable seat height.
What is the windscreen, do you like it?
Hi it's made by a company called powerbronze see here www.powerbronze.co.uk/bmw-r1200rs-15-18-r1250rs-19-20-450-mm-high-40-mm-wider-420-b124.html. Yes I like it, although it's not the best looking, the wind protection is very good.
@@TheSussexBiker thank you
What kit did you use to relocate the GPS unit?
Hi I used a Motomate one on this bike but on my R1250RS I am using a Hornig one HTH, thanks for watching :)

Howdy SussexBiker. Great vid. Been a fan of the R1200RS for a few years now and just love the way it can 'get a shift on' when required, but is also very happy pootling along at village speeds when the mood takes. Out of interest, what bar risers are they - and did you have to mess about with the cables/hose length? Cheers.
Hi thanks for watching and commenting :). Do you mean the screen as in windshield, I'm sure I mentioned mine came with a non standard one and I've put a bigger one on, or do you mean the dash? This is mentioned and talked about around 8.53.
@@TheSussexBiker I meant as in, what model windshield is it? It looks great!
