  • In this episode of Cecil's Shade Tree Garage I am working on a vintage Rotax engine. I first start by soldering in a couple new condensers, install a set of breaker points, Then I describe and show you how I change out crankshaft seals on this 1970's Vintage Ski Doo Rotax engine.

    Can't wait to see and hear it run. Never like getting my hands dirty so I always wear gloves. Guess that's why must of my stuff is down. Got to get down and dirty to get it done right. Good video Cecil.

    Don’t know if you’ve ever seen Jeff Bradshaw’s channel- Elderly Iron, but he has a special torque wrench like yours but when he thinks that he’s got the right torque spec, he goes “Click!” Every time! lol!

    Things I have done a thousand times without a glitch, company shows up and not one bolt comes without a fight or try and hold a couple wires together while getting the nut that holds everything back on and it either hits the ground or rolls up your shirt sleeve and you can't find it.... don't know how you do it with somebody watching... good times kids.. with love as I am seventy three so everyone is a kid to me

    I save this video in my favorites for future reference. Thank you for posting because my ignition is off because you said 16 thousandth of an inch which is 0.40 mm and mine is set to 5.5 thousandth of an inch which is .14 mm. No wonder mine doesn’t start

    If you want that thing to really rip hard, set the timing using either the direct or indirect method with a timing light or buzzer. FAR more accurate, produces way more power and more reactive to throttle responses.

    Did you use Oem points and condensers, or Kimpex. I haven't had very good luck with Kimpex.

    Hey Cecil, was running my sled the other day it’s a 90s 377. The engine shut down on the trails, after this it seemed to have more pepper. Was thinking it was the crank seals? Has good compression, by feel I don’t have a tester. Just assume it’s running lean and that’s why. What are your thoughts?

    • @LuukJSnijder

      Update: it was a crank seal and then I blew the PTO cylinder. Just rebuilt the motor but lost the electrical. Might’ve bumped the CDI while rebuilding. Hoping to get it all together this week, before we lose the snow.

    I used the wrong soldering iron, I’m wondering if that’s why I get really food spark to one plug and nothing to the other. Ive checked everything a dozen times ?

    • @cecilsshadetreegarage7408
      @cecilsshadetreegarage7408  4 роки тому

      Yes it maybe you overheated the condenser. Now I have seen folks install a set of breaker points and have the point wire backwards and it grounds out..Or they forget to re install the nylon washer on the breaker points. Let me know if you figure it out. Cheers

    • @elsydro8064
      @elsydro8064 4 роки тому +1

      How does one get the point wire backwards? It just goes to the condensers

    • @cecilsshadetreegarage7408
      @cecilsshadetreegarage7408  4 роки тому

      @@elsydro8064 If you twist the point wire the end of the wire terminal that is crimped to the wire can contact the point body when it's tightened up.

    how do I know if my engine has points? it's out of a formula sl500 and has ducati ignition.....it must be electronic ignition

    Can these seals be installed without splitting the case ?

    • @cecilsshadetreegarage7408
      @cecilsshadetreegarage7408  3 роки тому

      It is not advised. It's the case that pinches the seals to hold them in...I've never had luck any other way, they just seem to eventually pop out :-( Best of luck though.

    Don’t hit the clutch with the hammer

    • @cecilsshadetreegarage7408
      @cecilsshadetreegarage7408  4 роки тому +3

      Hello Arthur, If you are familiar with working on these clutches you will know a few small hits with a hammer won't hurt them, and you will also know that you always resurface the two sides with sandpaper when they are running, this takes out the ridges from years of use... Sometimes a good hammering is needed to get rid of these ridges.
