  • This review provides practical information about features that impressed me the most about this bass. The sound files are direct samples of the bass so that you can really hear how it actually sounds.

    Yes, I forgot to put my shoes on. We got caught up with camera shots and lighting and we realized halfway through the taping - oh well.

    Thank you for posting a comment. This is a great bass to grow into also. The "bones" are good, So it's perfect for hot rodding when the time comes to get a new bridge, pickups, etc.

    +eimidioskouroi, thanks for a methodical walk through the options of the Toby Deluxe V bass! I like that you consistently used a simple scale for each variable rather than a complex pattern because it makes it easier to hear the differences.

    For those who comment on noise. A single coil pickup is allways a tad noticeable. When you select both pickups it will start to humbuck and it will be less noisy. On all (bass) guitars with single coils duch hum can occurr. But once you start playing it won't be noticeable. When you look at professionall players who have a preference for the front or rear pickup only they will kill the volume on the bass as soon as they stop playing. Do is that your preference, learn that trick.

    Good question. I'm not sure. This was a demo that I had and I no longer have it. However, if you give me a few days, I'll try and find out for you, okay?

  • @eimidioskouroi
    @eimidioskouroi  11 років тому

    peppemetal85, yes, unfortunately, the neck pick up is as you describe and the back pick up is fine. However, these basses are typically entry level so a beginner might not really notice that. These basses are also for people that have some experience and starting to work on their tone. That sound like your situation. These basses are great for "hot-rodding" - adding great pick up, bridges, etc. Thanks for your comment!

  • @kevinjc
    @kevinjc 11 років тому

    It's got some nice sounds in it. Thank you for the demo. :) Just wondering, do you how wide the string spacing at the bridge is? I can't seem to find any information on the internet about it.

  • @eimidioskouroi
    @eimidioskouroi  11 років тому

    Hi Vernay. There is an actual or perceived volume drop when you pan to the bridge pick up. However, I've found that with all the basses I've ever owned with the jazz pick up. It's a tighter sound and as a result not as "bassy" or thick sounding.
    The strings are not the original strings. I put GHS Boomers on it.
    Thanks!

  • @eimidioskouroi
    @eimidioskouroi  11 років тому

    So did you pick one up? That's why I tried to have "direct signal" for this video so you can at least hear the basses potential. Thanks for the comment Everson!

    I bought one of these to fly with in a soft case (so I don't have to lug around my flight cases). Do you find that the apparent volume drops significantly the further you dial the pan pot towards the bridge pickup? Are those the original strings?

  • @peppe.dr.sound85
    @peppe.dr.sound85 11 років тому

    i have 4 and 5 strings version and other bass,i play rock,heavy metal,funky,alternative and more. i used picking stile with fingers , slap, and normal style with normal/soft fingering, this basses are limited for italy..and i my opinion this basses are great for price,sound and playbility,i use both basses for bright and aggressive music :D

  • @eimidioskouroi
    @eimidioskouroi  11 років тому

    Hi there Peppe. You've probably been playing for a while and are able to identify those aspects. These basses are definitely "beginner" basses. Most young bassist will not notice this. These basses are very practical for getting started and having fun with. As you grow as a musician, you can start to replace things like pickups, bridges, etc.

  • @eimidioskouroi

    Kevin, the spacing at the bridge is 16mm between each string. That info is directly from Epiphone, okay?. I hope that helps.

    This is a bigger drop than that (I have a bunch of J basses). It's almost as if its missed wired or there is a impedance problem. I wonder if all of them are like that, or if mine has a problem. I purchased it used.

    A bass that works better in a rock band context than alone. I have the IV deluxe and I want to try a 5 string one, I love neck and body shape of these (the only thing I don't like is the neck end finish when it joints the neck, near the truss rod access cover), and sound ... well, new strings just made a great leap into improving it, wondering if it's necessary a PU change for my needs or not, and electronics ... I tried it in passive mode (changing some cable connections) and I ended missing its characteristic high end on the sound. Great demo, great idea to play a simple scale to get idea of the sound of each string and the changes you do on the controls. A clean DI'ed sound should be a must on every bass demo to get a real comparison of basses, using an amp and a mic'ed cabinet is pointless and useless IMO. Thanks for the video, although 4 years later ;-)

      Wow, thanks for taking the time to leave your comments! Pick ups are always a great upgrade. I usually like to use the bass for a while before I start to "hot rod" it.

    I have this bass, I'm having an issue with the A - string. With the active tone expresser dial (the one you did not cover) turned up the volume is even between strings. With it turn off, the A-string is about 20% quieter, if that makes sense. Did you notice this?

    • @eimidioskouroi
      @eimidioskouroi  8 років тому

      +Jeff Krebs Thanks for the the comment. I did have an issue at one point that sounds similar to this. I took it back to them and fixed it. I'm not sure exactly what the problem was. I hope you can get it sorted if your bass is still under warranty.
      Regarding the tone expresser dial, I thought I covered all the pots on the bass. I don't think I referred to it as the "tone expresser". Bummer if I completely missed a knob for the review. Thanks for pointing it out.
      Cheers!

      @eimidioskouroi  10 років тому

      Hi Jon,
      I didn't notice any noise with this bass, so I can't say. Sorry I can't help any more on that.
      Cheers!

    • @snarf1851
      @snarf1851 9 років тому

      Usually that has to to do with either a faulty bass or something happens during shipping. I just bought one used for 129 and it has very easy to remove parts the neck comes right off after you unscrew all 4 from the back. The noise people complain about probably has to do with a slightly loose or off set neck which with this guitar is easily fixed.

    • @eimidioskouroi
      @eimidioskouroi  9 років тому

      Art yom Nice! I don't remember it having any noise. For the price of these basses, it's easily worth it to replace them with even slightly better pickups. Remember, these are entry level basses. However, built well enough to do some simple upgrades.
      Cheers!

    yes :D but in my opinion this bass have a great sound for this price. the pickup are noisly but the sound are brillant with good quality.
    change pickup = perfect bass
    original pickup = good bass
    the action for my style : 1,5 mm ; treble side and 2:0mm bass side.

    How good would this bass sound for metal? I know he said jazz pickups... If it isn't good for metal, any cheap suggestions?

    • @eimidioskouroi
      @eimidioskouroi  10 років тому

      Hi Even,
      I don't think this would be your best bet for metal. I have another video on my channel that looks just like this but I'm reviewing their Epiphone Thunderbird 5 (the have a 4 string version too). That bass is an incredible starter bass that would be better suited for metal. It is build incredibly well. At some point, all you'd want to do is hot rod it with better pickups. I was very impressed with it.
      BTW, the pickups on the bass in my Epiphone Thunderbird review are hot rodded pickups - not the originals.
      Cheers and thank you!

    • @eimidioskouroi
      @eimidioskouroi  9 років тому

      Hi!
      Congratulations. I love this bass. I would do a little research on the Gibson Thunderbird 5 string basses and get one of those. I forget which one they installed in mine, but they did have to route the existing cavity a little more to fit the pick up in so please be aware of that. After that, you are set.
      Thanks for getting in touch!
      Cheers,

    • @eimidioskouroi
      @eimidioskouroi  8 років тому

      +Pantera Walk you could possibly play metal with it. I would start with the back pick up the from definition and grit and then slowly build in the neck pick up to taste. From that point, you could add eq until you feel you have the right tone.
      Cheers!
