  • This morning we said to hell with the neighbors and cranked up the ol '73 Marshall 50w for some slip-slidin' around on an SG. I've had this old girl for a few years now and she loves to sing. It's not the best Marshall I ever heard by a good margin, but Steve Stills said you gotta love the one you're with, so we make do. The amp is bone stock and is biased a little warm to keep things interesting. Cab is a mid-90s closed back 1960ax loaded with Celestion G12M Greenbacks... for now. Stay tuned for a JBL upgrade! Guitar is a stock 2003 SG Standard. Pickups are 57 Classics. Licks are Duane Allman inspired.
    For this vid, the channels were jumped and both volumes were on "9". Settings were what you see in the video thumbnail. Amp was close mic'ed with an SM57. An AT4033 large diaphragm condenser was used for the room mic. Some slight reverb was added for spatial enhancement, but there was no other compression or effects whatsoever. And yes, it is LOUD.
    If you like my playing, please check out the Allman Brothers tribute band I play in called SKYDOG which is based in Richmond, VA (USA) and plays around the mid-Atlantic region.

      todd hess oh yeah man. The JBL D120F. Duane Allman used four of them in an open back Marshall cabinet. Van Halen used two Celestion’s and two JBL‘s in the same cabinet. Look them up. Amazing speaker. Thanks for the comment!

    As always excellent playing and tone. Makes me want to role my marshall half stack out of the closet. But then again I remember how loud it has to be to get this tone so it will remain in the closet for my grandchildren to inherit. Hopefully they will be smarter than me when I was young and use ear protection? Thanks for the video. Great to hear a cranked real marshall at a bearable volume (have a master volume on my stereo. LOL).

    Man, just a guitar plugged into a Marshall is really where it's at! I'm a pedal guy so I need to do a lot of clean Fender stuff. But man I love just plugging my Les Paul or SG into a Marshall!

    Love it man. Proper. Slide sounds never get old. The song that made me want to pick it up was ZZ Top dust my broom off the diguello album.

    I was wondering if you were going to go JBL!? Please do some sort of before and after to clarify whatever differences you find. I still can't believe those are classic 57s (:

    • @VirtualWoodshed
      @VirtualWoodshed  4 роки тому +1

      Actually yes, I will be doing a JBL/Celestion comparison video very soon. Stay tuned! And yeah, the humble little 57 Classic is a great pickup. Very underrated. People think they need to spend $600 on custom pickups to get good tone but you can cover an awful lot of ground with the 57. My $.02

    Great sound man! You know, they do sound great all those two-rock amps. Perhaps Duane or Jimi would use them too now, but it does take a lot more to make a Marshall sound good.

    • @VirtualWoodshed

      Oh I think Duane and Jimi would have gone into meltdown with all the options out there today! Honestly I don't keep up with all the great new brands like I should. I've got tweed and blackface Fenders and of course Marshalls and I feel like I've got all the options I need. Maybe an AC30 someday would be nice! thanks for the comment man.
