Nice work, skip the powder coating, it doesn't last, that is why Volvo used paint in the first place, doing it yourself would be my course of action, there is no better feeling when your finished, I have owned 240's over 40 yrs and over 2 million kilometres and this is number 5 ,here in Canada we have some of the harshest conditions in winter snow ,salt, -30 temps consistently and i see vehicles10/15 years old in much rougher condition than my 89 240 and since you took out the rear axle and said bushings, my car needs them to in the rear which will happen in the spring, great video 👍
The problem I find with powder coating parts under cars is they tend to get chipped easily .... I recently had the front end off my S3 and painted the subframe and suspension parts using high zinc primer and top coated in 955 Tough Liner.... gives a nice subtle finish that should be tough as nails
Glad I’m not the only one who finds small jobs growing into mammoth tasks! The bonus of getting someone to powdercoat the bits not only will it be a great finish, but gives you time to work on customers cars/projects I guess
Any plans to fit polyurethane bushes? My recommendation would be to fit SuperFlex bushes as they're the best and are worth every penny. They're not too hard so you get the best of both worlds.
Ah yes, the 240 rear bushings are a blast. If you've got the time, do it all yourself. Obviously, document all of it. This day and age I wouldn't know of any local professional shops to trust.
That is exactly what is happening with every job on these cars, feels so familiar. You start one thing and it's endless pit of "while I'm here I should change..." In my case it's multilink rear axle, so it adds even more fun
Another vote for powder coat. It will look so much better in the end. Ive gone mad on my build and powder coated everything fromt he chassis to the wiper arms!
My budget would stretch to painting myself. The colour of that car along with the wheels look awesome. Best combination in my opinion. Great content. Thanks
Great video. My personal view would be do it yourself. Powdering coating for me at least and for a few mates has never lasted as long as some good old fashioned man power and good quality materials. I am excited to see either way you pick 👍
Agreed. I also don't know how well that spray on sound treatment would work on Powder coat. That's where the money should be spent if any. The powder coat is just going to be covered up anyways. I also see a great opportunity to weld in supports for a watts linkage instead of a Panhard bar for better rear suspension geometry and control. So that new powder coat would make welding a bit more troublesome when re-work is needed. The extra bit of road control when doing lane changes and fast maneuvers would be a real bonus for the misses. And all the other parts on the rear suspension are already available from E bay as adjustable parts that come pre- finished in whatever color you like with bushings and is going to be cheaper then fixing bushings into the old stuff with the cost of refurbishment. Universal parts tend to be cheaper with economies of scale for them. Brake calipers do tend to benefit from powder coating. They are small enough so that's its a cost effective. Honestly, the stock sway bars are not that great anyways. With the live solid rear axle, large sway bars like those from IPD coupled with a stock rubber bushings in most areas tend to give you a nice ride with great handling and low road noise. Another problem with power-coating comes from where the bushing are installed. Overtime the rust will just go under the powder coating anyways where the problem points are going to be the bushing areas themselves. This is where it will develop chips overtime. Its easy to clean up with paint on the parts. No so much with Powder coating from what I understand. I just don't see much benefit on doing custom paint work and powder coating on things like the trailing arms as they tend to bend a lot in their stock form unless you put gussets in them and reinforce them. So powder coating would just simply flake off over time. Thank you for reading my blog post😉
Thanks for the views inside the axle architecture of your Volvo - oh, sorry - Monica. I’d prefer powder coating. While the parts were treated, there is time for family. I’m curious about the next steps… Greetings from Germany - Martin
Time to break open the piggy bank and powder coat essentials! times are tight though, and being a family man with little babe......time plays a big part of this resto! we well know your more than capable, just book it all in ....it will be back in days rather than you toiling on for maybe weeks! anyways enjoying this one! cheers!
Lovely job on the car so far, im sure it'll be a lovely driver when your done , im currently dropping the rear sunframe on my e36, every bushing died years ago lol
Brilliant stuff when you were taking the diff out I was surprised that you were not restoring the underside and then to my joy you stripped it all out and told us that you are 👍 I would definitely get the bits blasted and powder coated as it's alot more durable for the underneath. Top work as always 👌
Nobody likes having a dirty undercarriage 🤣🤣 But seriously, it's better to put the hours in stripping, rust converting, prepping, priming & painting the parts with a durable chassis paint. I despise powdercoating with a passion. Any deep seated rust just pushes it off & let's water & dirt in further corroding the part. Every single thing I have had powdercoated (by many reputable companies) has come to grief. Both new & old metals, I might add. Damage always seems to occur on a hidden area that you simply can't see. Damaged paint is far easier to catch & repair. Maybe it's due to the fact the North East of Scotland is very salty! Cheers. Leigh.
hi, nice work so far! i'm loving it. i would send it off for powder paint, nice mat black finsh!! did so with my front suspension last winter and will be sending rear axel and all for powder soon.. i hope you will be doing a detailed assembly of the locker and shiming it, going to do that also, and need some pointers.. cheers and keep up the good work
Brilliant video as always. Good to see a nice “small job” turning into a marathon 😂. I have no doubts in your abilities but as you have invested so much time effort and money in Monica I’d powder coat 👍 Keep up the great work.
Always enjoy your videos, paint it, seen powder coat get chipped and the steel rusts underneath it too many times, look perfect until it breaks. Would just say you need to warn people about bashing spanners with the palm of your hand, it can cause serious damage.
Brilliant. Things automotive never go to plan. The bushes you showed were totally shot. Makes good sense to do what you've done and I recon powder coat.
Banger racers always welded the diff so if they lost a tyre they could still drive.Quaiff diffs you may need to do some minor surgeory on the housing to get the fitting tolerances.I am pretty boring these days so would have fitted the stock dif.you have.Good video though.
Hi , so pleased to see that you are doing the underneath as you have done an exceptional job on the top and interior of the car, keep your amazing standards up, and the great content of your other builds. And I hope the wife and baby are doing well.👍👍👍
If I'm not entirely wrong, an axle spreader tool is used for these axles. It spreads the axle by the two indendts or notches on either side of the diff to make it much easier to reinstall the diff. Just a heads up if you didnt already know :) Its turning out fantastic!
I would clean and paint it myself. I learnt the hard way spent a fortune getting everything powder coated. It just rusted through just the same in my opinion not worth the extra money much rather spend the time getting it done myself. At least you know it is prepared properly and there are lots of specialist paints available these days
As all works on own vehicles it snowballs back in the day my old mk1 1300E escort I got a tune engine and fitted a lsd . Now my mk2golf GTI started as a bit of rust which as lead to a full rebuild some power coated most l'm painting . you know the paints on the market can give a good finish.
Defo powder coat, but by the time I’ve seen this you’ll of probably done it anyway lol 👍, I done all my Audi 80 suspension and subframes n it looks mint 👌
If I had the time, space and in no rush. I would clean and prep over winter. Paint and refit in warm weather and longer day light. Bet most powder coating places are busy run up to Xmas So it depends on how long it will take them and think it is cheaper if you have a load of stuff done in one go. Then in small batches. Bet it was the wife's idea to do the full strip down. As it's going to be her daily.
The whole underneath is going to get done over the next few weeks. The gritters are already out here now so it won't be going on the road till next season. Plenty of time to get things all done as they should 🙂
Just a little bit of project creep then? Mind you, with all the bushes replaced it should ride and steer very nicely. As my ol' dad would say "if a jobs worth doing, it's worth doing well". What he really meant was if he started something that turned a bit HubNut, then I would get pestered into sorting it out.
Powdercoating parts under anything but a show car that never drives anywhere is (IMO) a terrible idea and waste of money. It will get chipped then a crack will form, then moisture will get under it and be trapped under it. Good prep and a coat of hammerite.
Same opinion. Powder coat looks good first, and won't last. A pita to repair if cracked and with rust under the powder. The only advantage : cheaper than paint. Parts in the engine bay, inside of the car and at my workshop I still do powder coat. Rims too. Clear coat of powder. On axle parts it is a nogo on my cars
At that point, I would have it powder coated. After all, you want the car to last for as long as possible, don't you. Skimping now will cost much more later.

Peter Gabriel said it well. Do It Yourself. Love the project Volvo and all the other cars
you've shared with us. Thanks so much!

Great job Lewis. After all that effort, powder coat for me. Can’t wait to see which option you choose.
My budget would stretch to painting myself. The colour of that car along with the wheels look awesome. Best combination in my opinion. Great content. Thanks
Thank you very much for watching, glad you're enjoying the build!
Loving the content
I’ve had stuff powder coated but not too impressed
At least painting you can do it yourself and touch it up if needs be
you'll have to tune in next week to
see what road we go down!

Brilliant mate, really interesting to see how it all comes out and goes back together, it's a job I haven't yet worked up the courage to take on 😀
Well.....we know how it comes out 😂 let's see what happens next lol
The "locker mod" doesn't permanently lock the diff. It just allows it to lock up at speeds over 25mph. Still drives fine in car parks etc.
Time to break open the piggy bank and powder coat essentials! times are tight though, and being a family man with little babe......time plays a big part of this resto! we well know your more than capable, just book it all in ....it will be back in days rather than you toiling on for maybe weeks! anyways enjoying this one! cheers!

Always worth doing it
properly, it's also a lot easier when everything is out of the way

Thank you Peter! It always turns into a marathon doesn't it! Stay tuned...we definitely do Monica justice!

The well-known "domino effect", it starts with a small repair and ends with a complete car restoration.
Brilliant. Things automotive never go to plan. The bushes you showed were totally shot. Makes good sense to do what you've done and I recon powder coat.
They never do! We're glad were doing it all now, it would have never passed an mot with those bushes and we want Monica to have a clean pass!

Everyone is great thankyou! we want Monica to be the best she can be so we're doing the works!
I say if you have have plenty of paid work lined up then send it off... Good luck and well done guys

Yeah we don't have one but thank you for the heads up! We're going to source one or make one for putting the diff back in. Thanks for watching!
I've had the diff in and out many times and never needed one.
I like the do not look at the Mercedes...and it’s in every shot!
What Mercedes? 😂
@@WhitelandRestorations 🤣🤣🤣🤣

It's never just the one job is it! 😅
Another one of those...'where do you stop?' dilemmas. Should be great when you've finished but so much work!
Defo powder coat, but by the time I’ve seen this you’ll of probably done it anyway lol 👍, I done all my Audi 80 suspension and subframes n it looks mint 👌
*background rain 😂
I know it's been constant lately! We've invested in new mics to try and fix that rain issue lol
My 240 diff sounds like the Jetsons 😂 the bearings are that worn .
Just a little bit of project creep then? Mind you, with all the bushes replaced it should ride and steer very nicely. As my ol' dad would say "if a jobs worth doing, it's worth doing well". The good ol' "while i'm in there" syndrome.
Quite a bit of rain there.
Was there a Merc there? I didn't notice one.
So much rain! Another reason why we've gone and upgraded the microphones. The roof is like a drum 😂 Nope... No merc to be seen lol
Is that rim 18ins, if it is what size tires?
After so much time and effort you have put into the car it would be a shame not to powder coat it.
A lot of love sweat and tears gone into this project! We're not going to let standards slip underneath.... Stay tuned for the refurb!
Powder coat all the ay mate!
The shoes are always a twat 😂 it’s a technical mechanics term I’m guessing ! brilliant made me chuckle anyway.👍
I would strip it down and get it powder coated
The old law of "whileyoureinthere"...replacing a leaky tap washer turns into a new bathroom...
At that point, I would have it powder coated. After all, you want the car to last for as long as possible, don't you. Skimping now will cost much more later.
I would get it blasted and then paint with por 15
Stay tuned to see what we end up doing! 😁👍
Powder coat it 🙂, but only if you can afford it
You'll see what direction we take next week.... We think you'll like it 😁
If you truly loved your wife you would carry out the work during evenings and weekends… 😂
it's every hour of the day!
