The Battle of Gaugamela, also called the Battle of Arbela, took place in 331 BC between the forces of the Army of Macedon under Alexander the Great and the Persian Army under King Darius III. First of all, FINALLY!!! THANK YOU!!! This my favorite battle in the 2004 film that depicts his life.
Second of all, I need to make something VERY clear about this battle: In the movie, the Macedonians advanced BEFORE the chariots charged. They also chanted while they were advancing (WATCH A VIDEO OF THE MOVIE'S DEPICTION OF BATTLE OF GAUGAMELA!).
Oh, and third, changing the topic, I want you to do me ONE favor, about King Darius III. You see, his empire invaded not just Greece, but also India (their invasion was BEFORE Alexander invaded India). You see, the story of this invasion is a lot to explain, but I'll make it simple: Around 535 BCE, the Persian king, Cyrus the Great, initiated a protracted campaign to absorb parts of India into his nascent Achaemenid Empire, or aka, the Persian Empire. In this initial incursion, the Persian army annexed a large region to the west of the Indus River, consolidating the early eastern borders of their new realm. After a brief pause from Cyrus' death around 530 BCE, the campaign continued under Darius the Great, who began to re-conquer former provinces and further expand the Achaemenid Empire's political boundaries. Around 518 BCE, the Persian army pushed further into India to initiate a second period of conquest by annexing regions up to the Jhelum River (what is today known as Punjab). At peak, the Persians managed to take control of most of modern-day Pakistan and incorporate it into their territory. That is what I was told in a Wikipedia article that depicts Persia's invasion of India. Can you depict all of that into Total War?

i think darius III was anything except of military commander if he gave the command of the army to like ariobarzanes the results would be better, becuase he was the only person to outsmarted the alexander and stop the greek adavndce for month in battle of persian gate. but still alexander was truley great military strategist.

If only my total war rome 2 battles were this organized.
One thing never mentioned is that Macedonians had long spears at over 5 meters in length that was the biggest advantage on weapons, so a Macedonian could eliminate few Persians before being eliminated they also with their long spears could eliminate cavalry before they could start doing any damage to Macedonians.

I will never understand war, past or present. What do both sides experience in the after life? Are they standing around looking at each other? Or nothing at all?
In Iran we dont say alexander. We call him skandar. Eshkatnar an Iranian prince raised his flag against the empire and the whole teritory went in a chaos. He died in a. city at south east of Iran. The city name is Hendijan. Search in google map. This fictional character Alexander also died in his way to India. After 30 years of chaos Ashanid dynasty took the control and began the Parthian empire. Greeks made this person based on Eshkatnar and then after centries people accepted him as a real commander.
Nice vid but where not most of the infantry not Greeks from the subdued Greek city sites in the west of those fight as hoplites. Therefore less individual melees and more of the pike punch. As for the Persians how do they fight a long pike head on?

So if Darius just kept 500 spear guys around him, Alexander's cavalry would have been stopped and Alexander would have lost the war.
Alexander's companion cavalry were some of his most seasoned and loyal warriors. They're not morons. They could just as easily dismount and butcher them.

@@tagguh1 Even if they slowed Alexander's charge, Daruis's cavalry would have finished off the flank and returned to Darius. The Persians had a 20,000 man+ advantage. If they were able to surround Alexander, he would have been screwed.
@@Poisonedblade Numbers mean nothing in the face of disciplined well trained and elite troops. That is obvious and evident in this exact battle. Darius's troops were nowhere near as battle hardened and equipped as Alexander's were. Nor did they have the same level of discipline and good order, as is evident when their line absolutely crumbled once Alexander got behind them.
The reality is, Alexander was a master strategist as well as an excellent commander. Darius never had a chance to win this battle. Numbers do not mean anything when you can effectively control the battlefield, which Alexander was infamous for doing.
If Alexander is a real person, where is his tomb? Why nobody knows what happened to his body?

I’ll be happy to give you some good historical descriptions of Issusus, Tyre, Halacanarnis, the League of Cornish, Phillips invasion of Greece, Alexander’s exile, the retreat across the desert, etc if you want. Some of us boomers made it our life’s study, and visited many of the places we study. About the only thing the movie got right about Alexander was that battle. Darius Calvary was in the center, that’s why Alexander was slowly riding as though to leave the field. Beside him running along with them were thousands of slingers hidden by the dust. That left a gap in the center of the Persian line right where Darius was. When Alexander suddenly wheeled his Calvary and rode hard toward Darius the slingers who were deadly accurate attacked the Persian Calvary. Darius seeing he was unprotected turned and ran. Alexander knew killing Darius ended it all but Parmenion was in trouble and called for help. As a great commander would he choose to help his men rather than personal glory. I might add it was the first time a En Eshelan attack with the left reversed was ever used in history, and would be used through the American civil war. I might add that in the description of Cannae you were also wrong. It was his weakest troops in the center, not his strongest. That’s why Hannibal himself placed himself there to inspire his men. The center was supposed to slowly fall back allowing the Romans to sense a break through and commit more troops there allowing for what would become the first double envelopment in history to be used. A good rule of thumb in studying ancient military figures and battles is to first read the ancient sources. In Alexander’s case far and between, then the scholarly works by highly esteemed historians. Not all are the same. As an example in trying to grasp Alexander’s personality and character. I read three biographies. One by a Greek author, one by an American author, and one by a Persian or Turkish author. You’ll quickly see the biases, but it’s where they agree thats what I’m most interested in. Sorry if I was sloppy in my writing this but I had to rush. I’m sure you and I have much more in common than not. I’ve visited many of the ancient places where history was changed, and though not remotely the same in most cases. Sometimes you get to what’s accepted but not for certain, but the same feeling overcomes you. You know it so well you can hear the sounds, see it in your minds eye, sometimes it brings you to tears. Isn’t history grand?
