@@emmyuwu5403 No problem, glad it's working now! For the onion skin there's a couple of things you need to do. 1. when you open up a file you need to make a new layer and animate on that. the default layer krita opens with will be 'filled in' so the onion skin won't work with that. 2. when you start animating on the new layer you need to make a new blank keyframe every time you want to draw something new (right click on the timeline - select 'create blank frame') otherwise it'll just edit the drawing you have. 3. have the lightbulb activated 4. in the animation panel there'll be a icon that looks like an onion, click it, and then select the '1' either side of the '0' to show the next and previous frames. you can select more and adjust the opacity levels of each. Hope this helps!

Rough Animator is a really good animation app, it's £5 and (in my opinion) much better than flipaclip for hand drawn stuff. If you are looking for an editing software DaVinci Resolve has a free version which is meant to be really good, not sure if it's just desktop though. Good luck with your animations!
Hey! Sorry for asking but, the audio in Krita keeps lagging! I have a Macbook and I've tried Mp3 and WAV! I can't get the audio to match up! It was working previously!!! Can anyone help me?
No problem, also, I just thought - do you have the drop frame on? Sometimes Krita lags for me if I do (most of the time it's fine but sometimes it plays up so I have to test it off and on :') )
@@kdsketch Sorry for asking again but, for some reason, after downloading the ffmpeg and rendering the animation, the animation still won't come out as a video or even in my files! I also checked that the 3 little buttons said baseline. Could you help me?
That's ok - for baseline did you click on the menu and click baseline (even if it's selected) Krita is WEIRD and I had the same problem. If you did and that still doesn't work I'd suggest trying to convert the exported file with Handbrake (it's free too - usually I just use Handbrake to reduce my file size for large animations but it should convert the file to an mp4 format). Hope this helps!
Thank you so much! I used other apps for animation like FireAlpaca and FlipaClip but I NEVER got used to them! Thank you so much for this tutorial. You might be the cause of great future animators.

Hi, thanks a lot. Got started with Krita after this video. Just a tip, something I got stuck with is you have to make a new transparent layer and turn on the light bulb next to the layer to activate onion skin. And make sure there is no white. Also you can add what animation software you normally use in the description or as a subtitle in your videos so you're not spending a lot of time answering the same question. Otherwise keep it up! Loving the videos.
🤦♀️ I KNEW there was something i missed, I’m so sorry!!! Thanks for pointing it out, I’ll try and get an updated one out soon or put in an annotation 😅 I’ll definitely put my usual software in the description too! Thanks! 🙏
You are such an angel!❤️ I'm sick and bored, and I wanted to draw, but I got art block. So I thought, I want to try animating! On my tablet I have krita, so I searched for " how to animate on krita " and watched your video. I understood almost everything at the first listen, but I played it few times for sureness . It took me half of hour just to set up animation docks and another to understand the frames. Then I struggled next 3 hours with drawing ( it turned out to be 10 second video) and another hour to save it and send it to someone. I can't imagine how hard would it be whiteout this perfect simple to understand video of yours, so thank you very very very much ❤️❤️❤️❤️
oh my gosh you've just made my day!! I'm so glad the tutorial was helpful and easy to understand, it honestly means so much to hear that my videos were useful :) When I first started in Krita it took me forever to do anything because most of the tutorials were for the old versions and they'd updated quite a bit of the animation features since then! 10 seconds is AMAZING to do in a new programme, you'll get quicker and quicker with practice :D I hope you feel better soon and keep making more animations! Thank you for this lovely comment!!!
It’s good that you’re still trying!! Most people give up after the first try! My best advice would be to start with something simple and build on that ✨🙏 ALSO!!! This tutorial has been updated here ua-cam.com/video/yRfypDLO5jE/v-deo.html ✨hope it helps!
probably the best tutorial i've ever followed. Easy to follow, straight to the point, and explaining any questions we may have. earned a sub from me! =]
Although it’s an old video, I really liked he simplicity and straight forward answers. I watched a video that was 20 minutes long for animation on krita and I was still confused lol but I’m good now, thanks for the video!
Ah nice! I exported mine with audio to see how it'd react and it came out fine, just couldn't play it through while I was animating in Krita, which isn't the best if I was trying to do lipsync. I'm pretty sure they'll fix it soon though, it's a pretty important feature for animation :)
I know how you feel, my first tablet was a real struggle, but it did get better. Other than just keep practicing I'd suggest taking breaks to draw traditionally (helps remind you that you're actually good at drawing so you can get back to drawing on the tablet refreshed!). Doing studies and using references is a good way too - quick timed drawings help get your wrist used to using the tablet too and build up muscle memory :) Even if it's just 10/15 minutes a day doing sketches and warm ups before you get to the actual stuff you want to draw helps get the bad drawings out (I need to do this more haha). Hope this helps!!
i had this problem too at the beginning. but the more i focused on drawing simple shapes the better the strokes started to come out. if you get well acquainted with the software it helps to tweak the settings best for you :)
OMG moving through key frames with a keyboard shortcut helps MASSIVELY. Like, it’s one of those problems where it’s not a big deal to tolerate but when you find an efficient solution suddenly a weight is lifted off your shoulder. This video was great.❤️
I use keyboard shortcuts when I animate all the time. Makes everything so much quicker that when you have to go back to the old way of doing things, even just for a minute, you realise just how convenient it is! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Oh my gosh, thank so much for making this. It was really helpful and it wasn't half an hour long like all the other videos I found on animating in krita.
I've animated in it before but I'm still here coz kdsketch Edit: It looks different! I love the new layout and how the layers are arranged. That's kind of what put me off about it in the first place
I'm just a teacher who can draw and is looking for novel ways to produce stories for my kids so not looking to go 'pro' ever. Really enjoying all your tutorials. The current explosion of free, lightweight, yet powerful software is making a lot possible these days. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for making these tutorials. I am a young animator who wants to make her own cartoon someday and you’ve really helped with some of the short animations I’ve done already! Most of the tutorials I see say: “watch what I do”😅 but you go in depth are so much more helpful. -meh
Thank you so much, I'm so glad I could help with these - currently planning out a much more detailed series on how I plan/animate projects from start to finish!
Question before I get started, I'm going to make a short 3-5 second animation that'll have a decent 6FPS. -I'm learning so what is the reccommended file size for animation.- My animation is just going to feature 2 characters moving with a white background. What should I save the frames as?? PNG?? Krita Document?? Thank you =)
if you want to save the file and come back to it later save it as a Krita document (I think the file extension is .kra ?) PNG is good for if you have a transparent background and want to import it into an editing program to add in camera moves and things later. If you want to export as an animation you'll need FFmpeg and either a .mp4 or .mov is fine - I made a separate tutorial on how to export to make it clearer here - ua-cam.com/video/97hglBmJS_s/v-deo.html
I need help! So, when Im animating, then press play on my animation it skips so much and its too quick and it looks like pages flipping threw because a white thing comes up making it on each layer so it looks like pages flipping, so I slow my time down but now it looks like a slide show instead of an animation with the same page looking problem.
Sometimes I try turning the drop frame off which helps if it's lagging and the playhead is going past the frames before they play and my frame rate is usually set to 25fps. Hope this helps :)
@@kdsketch I JUST DID IT IT WORKS TYTYTYSMAMSMSM Im sending a happy birthday animation to my grandpa he is turning 60..? Idk xd but I just got a drawing tablet and I am so happy tysm :)
I am so lost in Krita. I cannot find any tutorials for people like me. Everyone has tutorials, but they don't come from a point of view of a traditional animator. My problem is, I am trying to use an imported drawing so I can trace over it and make animated frames from there. I am an absolute beginner, and it seems like people skip over steps because they don't remember what it's like to be program stupid starting out. LOL
I used a cheap/small wacom bamboo one/fun for my first tablet, I think they've stopped making it now but it helped me practice and get used to drawing digitally - you don't need the biggest/most expensive tablet right away :)
I've only tried a few so far like Sketchbook and Krita, but I'm planning to take a look at Opentoonz to see which I like more - I'll make another video on it eventually 😂 between sketchbook and krita I'd say Krita is the better option, simply because you can have more layers, but if you want a stable programme with less bugs and is easier to use then check out Sketchbook - since both are free there's no reason why you couldn't use both to see which one you prefer :)
right so, this tutorial explains how to open preferences in macos, windows doesn't provide the option to just click on "Krita" in the taskbar, thus i have absolutely no clue how to open that menu. please help
No problem! You'll need to create a new blank keyframe every time you want to draw something different otherwise it will just adjust the last one you made. To make a new keyframe you need to right click on the timeline and hit 'create blank frame'. or there's a button in the animation toolbar - it's the first icon beneath the playback buttons on the left. Hovering over them will tell you what each of them does :) Hope this helps!
Do you know how to reset the settings of krita. Cuz I’m having a mess with my timeline size and dockers... Why does your timeline look more bigger than mine? How do I extend it? And the color selector doesn’t appear at the top left corner
If you go to 'windows -- workspace -- default.' it will reset everything back to the original. I'd then add in the dockers again. You can move the dockers around the screen by clicking and dragging them. :)
Thanks! My teacher just made us sit at an computer and gave us Krita, he didn’t tell us anything about it (for three days) and I had stumbled on the animation section, and had no idea how to use it. (Luckily I had experience with procreate and knew some of the basics.)
I'm a sophomore in college just starting out with digital art, and hoping to learn animation (⁄ ⁄•⁄u⁄•⁄ ⁄) This tutorial is really helpful, thank you so much ♡
I'd try changing the set up by going to WINDOWS -- WORKSPACE and clicking one of the options there, then going to WINDOWS - DOCKERS and clicking the 'timeline' option and seeing if that helps. If you have a 2 monitor set up, the timeline panel might be there? If it still doesn't work I'd try uninstalling the programme and then reinstalling it to see if that works. Hope you can get it sorted!
Create a blank frame and have it hold until you want the animation to appear. Or creat a layer above and fill it with your background then create a blank key frame when you want it to appear?
So straightforward and helpful! It was so cool of you to include some fixes for known problems like exporting without the baseline setting. I'm moving from CSP cause the animation workflow is so much different than Adobe Animate which is what I was taught in, but this seems much closer and simpler. I'm so satisfied with Krita. OSS forever!!!
Glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful! There’s a more recent tutorial linked in the description but I’m planning on another updated tutorial for this again since they’ve included some new features in the update

Hey, I don't know if I am too late but I have a question, every time I go to the next frame it's the same thing and if I try to draw on it it goes to every single frame. Please tell me how to fix this, PLEASE.
Looks like your auto frame isn’t working SO you need to right click on the timeline and select create blank frame every time you want to draw something new
When ever I import a photo it goes to every other frame I made, and when I try take it out on the frames I it takes I out on the frames I want it to be, tell me how to fix PLEASE
I'd make a new layer and import it into that. Then clear/copy/paste it onto the frames that you want it. you can copy and paste a frame by right clicking on the frame and selecting 'copy to clipboard' or 'paste from clipboard'. hope this helps!

This tutorial has actually been updated here - ua-cam.com/video/yRfypDLO5jE/v-deo.html it's got all the timestamps in the description with everything I cover so it's easier to skip ahead or find the bits you need if you have to come back to it later :) Hope it helps!
Free? 😨 My mom just bought me Krita on a disc and usb drive and got it in the mail for Christmas. It actually had the software and no bugs but hearing it was free worried me.
If she paid for it then it's likely to be the version that automatically updates (like the one from the windows store), if it's the free one the difference is that to update it when they upload a new fix/version you need to re-download and install the software again so it's all good :) I think the paid for version is around £10.
Glad you enjoyed the video! I’ve done a few more krita tutorials like importing and exporting or onion skin as well 👌I’d say a graphics tablet is a good idea, they take a little time getting used to but they’re worth it - a lot easier to draw with than a mouse 😊
You need to make a new frame every time you want to draw something new (if you don't have autoframe on), just right click on the timeline where you want your frame to be and select 'create blank frame'. Hope this helps :)
ffmpeg is actually pretty cool in its own right; it's a standard encoder, decoder, and effects library for video editors, which can be used from the terminal! There are a lot of cool hacks. Many video GUI programs, and a lot of different export systems, rely on it for encoding.
Glad I could help! I've actually updated my entire krita tutorial video here ua-cam.com/video/yRfypDLO5jE/v-deo.html including updated export instructions! Good luck with your animations :D

⚡UPDATED KRITA TUTORIAL IS HERE - ua-cam.com/video/yRfypDLO5jE/v-deo.html
⚡HOW I MADE THIS ANIMATION (PLAYLIST)⚡ bit.ly/36K829V
Want to know HOW I animate something? I'll be posting new videos about EVERY STEP of my process and sharing all my tips and tricks to how you can make something too! I'll be updating the playlist as I make the videos!
How can I animate with my finger on computer????
For some reason krita won't load for me?? When I open it up it'll load and show up in the taskbar but I can't do anything with it. I've tried restarting my computer and reinstalling it but I still have this problem. If anyone could help I would really appreciate it :D
Hmm that's really strange? I don't have a solution but I'll pin your comment to make sure that if someone does know they can find the comment easier :) Hope you can get it sorted!
@@kdsketch Thanks for replying so quickly! I managed to figure it out, all I had to do was delete the kritarc file. I have another problem though, onion skin isn't working for me. I've turned on the lightbulb but I still can't see any of my previous or next frames
3. have the lightbulb activated
4. in the animation panel there'll be a icon that looks like an onion, click it, and then select the '1' either side of the '0' to show the next and previous frames. you can select more and adjust the opacity levels of each.
Hope this helps!
Maybe the software is too big for your laptop try using the 32 one
is your PC x32 or x64? because if you downloaded x64 Krita, it won't work on x32 PC.
Let’s see what I have
Determination. Yes!
Imagination! Check.
A decent amount of skill. I like to believe so.
A computer. Ye- wait um. No. Uh. I DO NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO FLIPACLIP!
-guess I just have to export each frame and shove it into some editing program (sigh)-
This is basically the opposite of another comment :p
Rough Animator is a really good animation app, it's £5 and (in my opinion) much better than flipaclip for hand drawn stuff. If you are looking for an editing software DaVinci Resolve has a free version which is meant to be really good, not sure if it's just desktop though. Good luck with your animations!

Hey! Sorry for asking but, the audio in Krita keeps lagging! I have a Macbook and I've tried Mp3 and WAV! I can't get the audio to match up! It was working previously!!! Can anyone help me?
The audio on my version has never worked for me but I'll pin the comment so anyone who might know should be able to see it better :)
@@kdsketch Thank You so much!!!!

Thanks! 🙏

You are such an angel!❤️
I'm sick and bored, and I wanted to draw, but I got art block.
I come back here every 3 days to get motivated to try again
Why am I like this
It’s good that you’re still trying!! Most people give up after the first try! My best advice would be to start with something simple and build on that ✨🙏 ALSO!!! This tutorial has been updated here ua-cam.com/video/yRfypDLO5jE/v-deo.html ✨hope it helps!

even though it says the build doesn't support audio it worked fine for me. even when rendered. I used WAV audio btw if that makes any difference
Ah nice! I exported mine with audio to see how it'd react and it came out fine, just couldn't play it through while I was animating in Krita, which isn't the best if I was trying to do lipsync. I'm pretty sure they'll fix it soon though, it's a pretty important feature for animation :)

I'm struggling with drwing tablets. I know practice makes perfect but do you have any tips
@@kdsketch thanks! Ill keep at it
i had this problem too at the beginning. but the more i focused on drawing simple shapes the better the strokes started to come out. if you get well acquainted with the software it helps to tweak the settings best for you :)
the past year i've been animating in autodesk sketchbook, so seeing this was heavenly! finally i can practice lipsyncing again! 😭
Wh- I'm so confused
Oh my gosh, thank so much for making this. It was really helpful and it wasn't half an hour long like all the other videos I found on animating in krita.
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful! :D
Very helpful! This video answered at lot of questioned I had! Thanks!
Glad it helped!
I've animated in it before but I'm still here coz kdsketch
Edit: It looks different! I love the new layout and how the layers are arranged. That's kind of what put me off about it in the first place
😅 ah Thank you! I tried it a year ago and it looked really different, I’m hoping they fix the sound soon 🙏
I'm just a teacher who can draw and is looking for novel ways to produce stories for my kids so not looking to go 'pro' ever. Really enjoying all your tutorials. The current explosion of free, lightweight, yet powerful software is making a lot possible these days. Thanks for sharing.
That's really cool and no problem, I'm glad you liked the video :) I'm planning on doing more tutorials and basic animation tests/tasks pretty soon!

YESSSS THANK YOU IVE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THIS APPLICATION AND NO IDEA HOW XD
Very helpful and informative tutorial, thanks. I have creating animated gifs in GIMP lately, want to try animating in Krita too.
Glad it was helpful!
Help? The scaling of my Krita app is zoomed, and I can't see other options. Is my pc too small to show the whole application or wut?
It shouldn't matter what size your PC is but you might be able to resize the panels by clicking and dragging the edges?
Thank you for making these tutorials. I am a young animator who wants to make her own cartoon someday and you’ve really helped with some of the short animations I’ve done already! Most of the tutorials I see say: “watch what I do”😅 but you go in depth are so much more helpful. -meh
Thank you so much, I'm so glad I could help with these - currently planning out a much more detailed series on how I plan/animate projects from start to finish!
kdsketch I’ll definitely be staying tuned! :)
@@kdsketch okay thanks!

can i ask you what your main animation software is?
It's TVPaint 11 Pro -- it's expensive but I bought it on student discount when I was at uni which made it a bit more manageable :)
LOL
Once all your drawings are scanned and named/numbered in order try this ua-cam.com/video/o5XeD5NeGiU/v-deo.html :)
I wanna get better at drawing and start animating so i need a tablet but i do have krita and 2 other animation software.
I used a cheap/small wacom bamboo one/fun for my first tablet, I think they've stopped making it now but it helped me practice and get used to drawing digitally - you don't need the biggest/most expensive tablet right away :)
@@kdsketch i know i was planning to start small also out off all the free animation software which do you think is the best.
@@kdsketch good point i wanna get into animation and illustration since i do graphics in Photoshop.

right so, this tutorial explains how to open preferences in macos, windows doesn't provide the option to just click on "Krita" in the taskbar, thus i have absolutely no clue how to open that menu. please help
I didn't have access to a Windows computer at the time, but as I do now, I'll be updating this tutorial for windows :)
Another question when i draw a ball moving and switch to the a new frame the old ball shows
Thank you thank you thank you💓💓
It’s called onion skin. It helps with advanced animation, and it helps make it better. But oh well.

This is like my 2nd animation but I’m determined to try Krita!!!
bigger* not more bigger smh
Thanks! My teacher just made us sit at an computer and gave us Krita, he didn’t tell us anything about it (for three days) and I had stumbled on the animation section, and had no idea how to use it. (Luckily I had experience with procreate and knew some of the basics.)

what if I want a layer to not be shown in a specific frame, but in another. like. it being invisible in frame 1 - 10 but visible from 11 - 24
Create a blank frame and have it hold until you want the animation to appear. Or creat a layer above and fill it with your background then create a blank key frame when you want it to appear?
So straightforward and helpful! It was so cool of you to include some fixes for known problems like exporting without the baseline setting.
