What's it really like at the North Pole?

  • The North Pole is where the Earth's axis of rotation meets its surface in the Northern Hemisphere. It's basically the tip-top point of the planet, directly opposite the South Pole.
Now, there are these two satellites, NOAA-20 and Suomi NPP, that are part of the Joint Polar Satellite System constellation, and they're flying around the Earth from pole to pole 14 times a day while the Earth does its spin thing. And get this, they're separated by 50 minutes so that scientists can watch ice moving in the Arctic with looped imagery. It's like having your own personal ice skating show online.
But let's talk about the North Pole itself. Unlike the South Pole, there's no solid land up there, just a whole lot of ice floating on top of the Arctic Ocean. Over the past 40 years or so, scientists have noticed a major decrease in the amount and thickness of that ice during both summer and winter months. It's a bit concerning, really.

wow -this brings back my most amazing memories after completing last degree ski north pole in 2014 over 2 weeks. dont be fooled by its stunning beauty. it is harsh and always remember thinking to myself i wouldnt put my worst enemy in this place. the reason after 10 day day trek with hardly eating anything except some nuts. probably burning 5000 calories a day and eating less than a 1000.at the end of the day you have to set up the tent using screws that go into the ice. but when your hands are already frozen it becomes an impossible job. BUT after all this said i wouldnt change anything i did expect maybe maybe be fitter before i went. its the most amazing thing i have ever done and i think about my time there almost every day.i hope to go buy some day more prepared and if anybody is thinking about doing this trip DONT just think about it DO it. i gurantee it will the best thing you will ever do in your life time.

To be honest the Artic ocean is where they stage the fake North pole! The actual 90 degree North pole is free of ice and is a island. No public touring can go to the real North pole because it's off limits under Artic treaty, reason why is because earth's magnetic field.

The lines of magnetism are nearly verticle at the magnetic poles. Your compass needle will want to point at the ground at the magnetic north pole, which is not at geographic north, and straight up at the magnetic south pole. Magnetic north is currently at 81.3 -110.8 - a place offshore between geo north and Borden Island Canada. So your compass needle at geo north will point toward offshore of Borden Island, north of the North Pole.

@@mariusgherman3971 At the South Pole, all directions face north. For this reason, directions at the Pole are given relative to "grid north", which points northward along the prime meridian.

How?? Since it’s literally no land there, all that is just ice… cold, thick, miles deep ice. They’re on a literal frozen ocean. Id hate to go there, only for it to thaw out… 😂 I’d feel better in Antarctica, where at least there’s a continent for the ice to be on
