100 Year old Ramses Coffee Grinder Restoration

  • I found this old coffee grinder - probably made around the year 1910. So it's at least 100 years old and looked as if it has never been cleaned.
    The type of this grinder was very common: four pillars and thin sheet brass. I think this type was invented by Zassenhaus, but often copied by many producers. In this case the grinder shows a 'Ramses' label, which was used by a Hungarian factory.
    The restoration was not too complicated. Just cleaning, polishing, soldering and making a new bushing on my lathe. I could not remove all rust scars since the brass was extremely thin. But I like the result and now it is a new highlicght in the kitchen. And it is working fine!
    Enjoy the video, and if you liked it, like, subscribe and feel free to leave a comment.

    Brass always looks spectacular when polished, it's a beautiful alloy to work with. Thanks to your brilliant restoration, the grinder is good for another 110 years of service. My grinder is an old Zassenhaus 169dg La Paz. The reason for the overhang on the top and bottom of the mill box, is so that you can hold it beween your knees, whilst grinding.

    Merci pour cette belle restauration. Seul regret : en amoureux du bois, je trouve toujours que la présence de contreplaqué dans un bel objet, qui plus est de plus de 100 ans, est comme un cheveu sur la soupe ... ou dans le café 😄

      Merci beaucoup pour votre commentaire. Je me suis demandé quel bois choisir. Les avis divergent ici. Certains pensent qu'une restauration doit ressembler le plus possible à l'original. D'autres pensent qu'il faut rendre visibles les différences entre la substance originale et les nouvelles pièces, afin que les générations futures puissent distinguer les pièces originales de celles qui ont été remplacées. Ici, j'ai choisi de laisser le bois neuf visible. C'est pourquoi je n'ai pas non plus harmonisé la couleur.

      Thanks and welcome for subscribing! The next restoration Projects aren on their way. But having a fulltime job I can't spent more than two or three hours a week in my workshop. So I can't produce more than one video every two or even three months - depending on the time needed for restoration, video production and so on ...

    Does brass that old contain lead?

    • @simonl4523
      @simonl4523 2 роки тому +2

      It did contain lead, yes. Looking at how malleable the brass is when he works it around the 4-minute mark, I think this is some type of machinable brass with about 3% lead like C36000, or maybe a bit less. But I think the risk is negligible because the coffee does not come into contact with the brass, just steel and wood?

      Just instant coffee contain more acrylamide and taste bad in general.
