    • @subliminalvibes

Laserdisc is 4:3 full screen (either open-matte or pan and scan), and 4:3 letterboxed. There were only a handful of true (anamorphic) widescreen transfers, and they were only made as promotional items to give away at retail stores when a customer bought a new widescreen TV.
To play a letterboxed LD on a widescreen TV requires you to zoom the image, bringing the 4:3 image out to meet the sides of your screen, and hiding the letterbox bars which sit above and below the 'widescreen' frame - as it appears in the video above. 👍😎

The highest Video resolution that Laserdisc can handle is up to 480i. If you have a higher quality 4k tv like a Sony bravia, and it has composite out, then you should have access to a incredible 3D comb filter!

Hey there, the Panasonic still has RCA connections (composite video can be plugged in to the green component input), so it’s composite direct in the the TV.
I’ve owned quite a few of the cheaper HDMI adapters and I find they usually make the image worse or cause aspect ratio problems.

It not as impressive with films that are older like Logan’s Run for example. Also, with LD the better the player the better the quality. It is true that OLED does a great job at making them look better. It’s all about the blacks and contrast which OLED spits out in spades.

There’s no way that is laserdisc. Letterboxed movies are still presented in 1.33:1 aspect ratio will have black bars on top & bottom. There would be some serious cropping, de-interlacing and upscaling to make laserdiscs look even halfway decent, especially when they only have 425 interlaced lines of resolution (VHS had 240, NTSC TV had 480. Star Wars original trilogy that appeared on DVD were from laserdisc masters and were nothing to write home about.

It kinda depends on the source. A dvd remastered from a new transfer and in 16x9 widescreen will clearly beat a 4x3 letterbox laserdisc.
But those made from the same video master, things originally shot on standard definition video, a movie or tv show that was originally in 4x3 or open matte. LD in those cases actually looks about as good as dvd.
