Good morning My Garden Answer Groupies. Greetings from Windermere, Florida zone 9b 🇺🇸 Hurricane Elsa dropped a couple inches of rain 🌧 and minimal wind. Whew! We were lucky 👩🌾👍
I love hydrangea season here in Japan. They are everywhere. My neighbor gave me a rooted cutting from one of her pink hydrangeas and I gave it one application of used coffee grounds way back last year and this year the blooms were a gorgeous deep blue!
Did you add just the grounds or did you add the liquid also? I was given a hydrangea and I may be too late to save but an still trying. Help! Thanks from Pennsylvania USA.
I bought three hydrangeas from the supermarket. Two were purple and turned gray brown (weird color). Although the blooms weren’t dead, I cut them all off then the leaves turned brown 😳. I trimmed one all the way back and left the leaves on one then, repotted both. I moved them on the side on my gazebo that gets only afternoon sun and they’ve put on so much new growth. I’m waiting for them to get established before transplanting into the ground...fingers crossed for next year. The third I purchased was blue and didn’t look like it was gonna survive but, I cut that one back (I didn’t have anything to lose) and repotted it...wow, it’s doing so well. None have new blooms but, I’m guessing next season will be a beautiful one. You’ve given me so much inspiration. I’ve never had outdoor plants but, watching your videos has given me courage and incentive. I’m no longer afraid...if they live, they live..if not, you learn. Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden and knowledge. 💞
You always bring a smile to this old woman's face. This was a very beautiful video and I always learn a lot. You are a very wonderful good hearted person and I thank God for you and pray for you and yours daily. May God always keep you and yours safe.
I couldn’t take my eyes off them.. lol. I kept thinking how hot it is there and they are just chillin under the the willow without a care in the world of what mom is doing today… it’s too hot. lol
This is down my alley. I love container planting. I currently have 3 Hydrangeas in pots. One of them is 20 years old. I have had to graduate it up to larger pots as the years progress. I wheel it into the garage every fall and water it off and on then bring it out in the spring. It's my baby since it was bought when my children were babies. It will be a sad day when it decides to leave. I also do the same thing with Hostas' in pots.
Laura says "let me teach you about Hydrangeas" and I've rewound so many times because I keep missing what is said because I keep watching Cheddar and Russel!
Cheddar & Russell morning show!! Totally have to watch video twice since it was so cute watching the cats first thing this morning! Let me go freshen my coffee for viewing #2! 😁☕️😍 🐈
Hydrangeas are my absolute favorite! Ice storm in Texas did some damage to the one by my front door this year but it's come back and that was a bonus! It even gave me two new plants where the lower branches rooted on their own. I've had that one about 5 years.
I moved from a mountaintop in VA to San Antonio a few years back. Soil here is horrible so I kept many of my mophead cuttings in very large containers as well as all my oakleafs. They survived that awful freeze last winter here and bloomed beautifully. I plan to plant out the oakleafs this Fall under a young red oak by a part of deck. They grew at least a foot this year in containers in that location. Gatsby Moon, Gatsby Pink, and a Ruby Slippers. Wish me luck please!
Same sort of issue with alkaline/clay conditions here in 8b central Texas. Mine are also planted in containers. I've had several people here tell me not to bother growing them, but I can't not! 😍 have killed three hydrangeas so far, but I think I've got the hang of them now. Two Endless Summer that are thriving!
Well I always learn something new from Laura. Hydrangeas don’t need fertilizer after July. 🤔that’s good to know as I usually spray mine with weekly soluble.
Aaron and Laura, I’ve always been an “animal person, “ our family having raised everything from Labs to ostriches, and I loved all of it! With age and the ups and downs of cancer, I can no longer keep domesticated animals, but God graciously put us in a 6 acre forest full of critters on a live creek in north Texas. I started dabbling in gardening, making virtually every mistake you address in your videos, but once I found your channel, the gardening took off! My wonderfully supportive family helped with bringing in new soil, installing drip irrigation, planting, and encouraging me toward interest in my “green babies.” I bought so many four packs, six packs, nine packs 😩. When I discovered your channel mid-May, we started buying Proven Winners and other quality plants. Oh my! It (YOU!) made me believe that maybe I could really do this! 🪴 💪💚 On days when I physically can’t (chemo), your videos entertain, encourage, inspire, and yes, Laura, teach. 😉 Love, love, love! ❤️❤️❤️ My challenge is shade. Trees are a treasure in Texas, and we don’t take any out without serious consideration. I have two pots on either side of my north-facing front door, under a total tree canopy, each with the most pathetic hosta you have ever seen. Is there any succession of plants that I could keep in these pots for interest year around? Zero sun, zone 8. God bless y’all for doing your part to keep alive the America I knew growing up. 🙏❤️🦋 🪴 🇺🇸
My sentiments exactly. Because of circumstances and illness, in particular, cancer, I had given up my gardening dream. With Laura’s inspiration I too have begun gardening and enjoying the experience.
I'm praying that you have a speedy recovery. From a beautiful sunny Cape Town South Africa... That's what makes life more pleasurable. The strife we go through and then God reminds us how beautiful it is, with gifts, family, critters a forest, and most of all. Love.
Good for you, Cathy. Your property sounds just lovely. I'm up in Montana, zone 5a or 4b depending on the source. My 2/3 acre is on the top of cliffs near the Rockies. I have lupus and have been disabled since 2003. For the first ten years I was housebound and for the first three I couldn't even drive. Thank God for my husband, Jim, who took such good care of me and who sadly died in 2015. How blessed you are to have your family. My son lives near me and is a big help. Anyway, I garden and have gardened all along this illness. When I have long periods of being too ill to do anything, the garden suffers. Then I have a period of remission and the garden comes back to life. All you can do is what you can do. Watching gardening videos is a nice way to add beauty and positive energy to my day.
I am so glad that I am not the only one who has the issue of watching and listening to Laura and the beautiful hydrangeas or the two goofballs in the background. 4:26 so adorable.
Planted a tiny Wee Bit Giddy this spring, gorgeous pink. Little darlin’ started blooming right away, even though the leaves were a little tattered from shipping. Since we’re moving to a condo within the month, I’ll be planting at least one in a pot to call my own.
Good morning🍁 regarding the Japanese maple I would just cut the upper half with the sparse regrowth. I think the bottom half looks quite good on it’s own, the branches have a nice downward drift…would be a shame to toss that big of a maple 🙏🏻 here in Germany 🍁 are quite expensive this size…and I’ve seen worse 🤣
The hydrangeas we planted last year are blooming profusely this year. So rewarding. I have learned so much watching your video's. My garden is only two years old and I look up your videos on everything. But, I almost broke my ankle trying to do the "Laura Hop" on a shovel. The way you jump on the shovel with both feet. guess I am still a novice!
I inherited two hydrangeas from my mother-in-law. Have no idea the variety. I’ve had them going on 4-5 years...never bloomed, not even once. 😕😞 I’ve moved one from semi-shade to sun...it bit the dust.😩 So I’m gonna try your method! 😃 I had no idea that you could plant them in pots! Thank you for giving me another alternative to just throwing it out (that is my husband’s suggestion 😱)
Good Morning Laura & Gardening Friends! Hydrangeas are some of my Favorite flowering plants. I kept my focus in what Laura was sharing, 🐈 because I have 2 larger hydrangeas that are showing off but are distinctly different and are stunners in their own right.
Laura, thank you for show casing the Proven Winners hydrangeas. Having blooms on new and old wood is pure perfection and I will be checking my local Lowe's for these plants. Have a great day!
Hello Laura! My urban cottage garden is filled with this type of hydrangea. The hydrangeas are beautiful. I love the mophead type, but they are very particular. I am glad that you are trying again. If this type works well for you, then I will try them. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day!
I was so taken with the beautiful hydrangeas that I didn’t even see Russell and Cheddar. I had to go back and watch the episode again after reading the comments about the cats. Fun!
Addicted to your videos, Laura! I live in a pretty town 10 miles south of Bath in England, with a tiny outside space. You give me such inspiration! Love Benjamin's Butterfly Garden.
G' morning! 🌞 finally inside to watch at my regular time. Been working hard in the garden super early before work so I've had to watch later... glad to be back on track!
The joy you bring Laura is like a breath of fresh air! And boy don’t your co-stars try to steal the show! 😂 Carry on boys show her who is really in charge!!
I have always been a little fearful of trying Hydrangeas in my garden. I too live in high desert climate (zone 6a) and just didn't think it was possible for them to grow and thrive here. After watching you explain in more detail the needs and wants of this beautiful plant, I think I'm going to give it a try. Thanks Laura for the great detail about about these lovely plants and helping me realize that it is possible!
Concrete is very Alkaline as well so you might want to try growing them in different containers if you are trying for blue blooms. We have acidic soil where I live but the hydrangeas planted near by concrete foundation are always pink no matter how much acidifier I add.
I think I'm gaining confidence!!! Laura, you are convincing me to plant hydrangeas in containers. I love them I've just been intimidated by them because we get such harsh afternoon sun. But there is a nook in the garden where I might be able to give them a little bit of a reprieve from that super scorching late sun.
I love hydrangeas, but I fail on those always I think there just beautiful if you got the green thumb on those I'll keep an eye on yours see how you do before I get one...your advice helps alot thanks Laura.
I’m so happy to see your willow flowing in the background. Yesterday we had a 20 minute storm that took out our town playground’s 50 year old willow. It was heart breaking to see the tree that stood at the center of our park since my childhood and before lying on the ground.
I learned, the hard way, that macrophylla do not reliably bloom in zone 5 Canada as the buds die off in winter. I stick with panicle hydrangeas. I can't find chelated iron, but need it for my hydrangea and maple tree.
Bliss… summer day in the shade, willow tree fronds gently swaying in a balmy breeze, deep green lawn, butterflies, beautiful pinks of the hydrangeas and Cheddar and Russell playing in the background - Heaven on Earth
Good Morning! I love Japanese Maples and would trim the bottom branches to better reflect or fit in with the new top growth. You did great work saving it and encouraging new top growth so it would be a shame to get rid of it. Great channel!
Not sure if it was Cheddar ,but it was so funny when he started playing with his own tail.. 🤣😅😂 as Laura was trying to explain each of the plants... I was so distracted and smiling at the cat I had to rewind and try to focus on what she was saying. 🤦♀️🤣
I had to start the video over because I was enjoying the playful kitties in the background. This is information I really need so I will take the time to start over.
How is the pixie miniature peach doing?? I love seeing all the ornamental and accent trees you have on your property. I would love to see all of the smaller trees you have and if you included some other ornamental/ accent specimens in your tree order for next year!! Thanks and love your channel!!
Your pots are gorgeous I want them all they make the flowers just that much more beautiful! And the weeping Willow fabulous with their billowing leaves
Oh those boys!!! Russell and Cheddar kicked my ADD into gear and I love hydrangeas! And then there was the butterfly! But they ended up beautifully. ❤️
I love hydrangas but have had an issue with mine for the last eight years, they wouldn't bloom, I think they are a variety that blooms on old wood, I watched a video that mentioned buds being zapped by late frosts in the spring, so this year we covered them when the forecast indicated light frosts and whaa laaa, this year they are prolifically blooming and are absolutely gorgeous! I was ready to dig them up and replace them, so happy to finally know what the issue might have been! love you videos each morning! They are the start to my day!
Oh! Thank you for sharing! We had a surprise frost this year. Maybe mine got zapped because we have no blooms this year! The leaves did not even flinch at it though, so I thought it was ok. I will be ready next year!
I just planted 3 Proven Winner Little Limelights this year and they are blooming now. I watered them everyday. I alternated watering the root ball direct or around outside of plant. Used soil mix and flower tone in hole when I planted in early sprimg. I am happy.
Russell and Cheddar are hilarious in the background.
LOL!
Always 😂😂
They steal the show.
Yes, I kept realizing I'd spaced out on all the useful information from Laura because I was busy watching the kitty antics. ❤
I found that weeping willow branch SO distracting, totally in the way of my view of Russell and Cheddar, ha ha...
Morning! Totally distracted by the cats playing in the background this morning 😂
me too......I had to go back a few times to hear what Laura was saying lol
I had to go back and rewatch because I was totally distracted! 🤣
😆
Me tooo🥰
As soon as I spotted them playing, I could only focus on Russell and Cheddar! So cute! I went back and watched Laura after their playtime. LOL
I think I spent more time watching the miniature lions rolling around in the background.
Miniature lions:) I love that.
I was about to say the same thing!!😂😂 what was she saying...🤔🤔🤔😂😂
Cheddar & Russell playing under the Weeping Willow tree in the background! So cute 🥺🥰🐈

How is the pixie miniature peach doing?? I love seeing all the ornamental and accent trees you have on your property. I would love to see all of the smaller trees you have and if you included some other ornamental/ accent specimens in your tree order for next year!! Thanks and love your channel!!
So satisfying to watch an open bag of espoma go into a concrete planter and taking beautiful plants out of their cans into that beautiful new soil.
Thank you so very much.
Your pots are gorgeous I want them all they make the flowers just that much more beautiful! And the weeping Willow fabulous with their billowing leaves
I was wondering how are you planning to overwinter them ? I love growing hydrangeas in pots but it is not always easy to do so in zone 5
Oh those boys!!! Russell and Cheddar kicked my ADD into gear and I love hydrangeas! And then there was the butterfly! But they ended up beautifully. ❤️
Proven Winners commercial. Beautifully done Laura! “Wee Bit Grumpy!” 😂! I’m in zone 9 B too. Hugs. ✨💖✨
I love where you put them, I hope they do well for you!
Thank you yet again for another great instructional video. I adore hydrangeas but have limited success. Your knowledge is so helpful!!!
Hydrangeas do love pots! I’ve had a couple that struggled, potted them up and they flourished. Those look beautiful in their pots. Stay cool today. 😁
I just planted 3 Proven Winner Little Limelights this year and they are blooming now. I watered them everyday. I alternated watering the root ball direct or around outside of plant. Used soil mix and flower tone in hole when I planted in early sprimg. I am happy.
Good morning everyone! Coffee ready☕️☕️! Because of you, I bought 2 this year & they are beautiful!❤️❤️
Very beautiful container with charming full bloom flower😍😍😍
